Book Description

This highly innovative and intriguing book applies principles of microeconomics to unusual settings to inspire students, teachers and scholars alike in the `dismal science'. Leading experts show how economics reaches into the strangest of places and throws light onto the occasionally dark side of human nature. `Sins and Needles' examines the economics of drug addiction, prohibition and liberalization; `Guns and Roses' looks at the contribution economists can make to understanding crime as well as marriage and divorce; `Body and Soul' investigates the economics of pornography, prostitution, suicide and religion; `Conception and Rejection' explores the controversial economics of assisted reproduction and abortion; and `Fun and Games' considers the economics of sport, gambling and music.

Not only does Economics Uncut illustrate how economics can be used to promote our understanding of a broad range of human behavior, but it also draws upon research conducted in other disciplines from the social sciences. As such, this fascinating and highly accessible book will be of great interest to academics, students and researchers in economics, criminology, sociology, and psychology alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Student's Perspective.......2007-09-26

As a student reading this textbook for the course "Economics of Behavior and Misbehavior," I find this an excellent work. Not only is it a smooth read, but it also gives me a feel for the entire picture of its topics. Just when I feel left with the question, "But what about...," there's the answer in the next sentence or paragraph. Anyone interested in the controversial issues tackled by this work can learn much from the economist's or general social scientist's perspective.

Book Description

Organizational Transformation is the first book to analyze how organizations make it through difficult periods. Based on case studies drawn from a variety of industries, such as mental hospitals, schools, manufacturing companies, and the American Wildlife Society, this book offers practical advice on development strategies for managers and organization consultants. The book is divided into four sections, the first of which describes in detail the different approaches that have been developed to transform organizations. The second section describes and compares some of the basic strategies used in transforming organizations. The third provides the reader with a variety of theories and research on the topic, and the final section conceptualizes and integrates these theories.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Paradigms for a futuristic "excellent" organization.......2000-03-31

The book provides an excellence descriptions of many approaches to organizational improvements by other theorists.

The book offers a futuristic view of organizational excellence and the means and strategies to achieve this excellence. The book is well-organized, from theory to strategies to the "how-to". It has a good mix of being academic and being practical.

There are many cases cited in the book and these cases are well placed such that readers are not bored with the theoretical portions.

My favorite line of the book is in Chapter 3, where the authors summarized the state of excellence being one that shouldn't "do more of the same and better", but one that will do things "in a completely different way and from a different perspective". There have been so many cases that organizations merely use the model of doing "more with less" or being more efficient and effective, as a motivation for organizational improvements. The book offers a fresh look at the basis of organizational improvements.

        Description:
On-farm production of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus inoculum can reduce the cost of the inoculum and increase utilization of this symbiosis in plant production. Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) seedlings, colonized by AM fungi, were transplanted into raised bed enclosures. Media within the enclosures was vermiculite mixed with either field soil or yard clippings compost in Experiment I and vermiculite mixed with yard clippings compost or dairy manure/leaf compost in Experiment II. Compost and vermiculite mixtures yielded more propagules of AM fungi than soil-based mixtures in Experiment I. Growth of plants in a 1:4 (v/v) mixture of yard clippings compost and vermiculite produced more inoculum (503propagulescm^-^3) than growth in 1:9 and 1:99 (v/v) mixtures (240 and 42propagulescm^-^3, respectively). Water, inorganic nutrient solution minus P, and fish protein digest were added to inoculum production enclosures in Experiment II. Results indicated that supplemental nutrient addition was unnecessary. This method produces a concentrated inoculum of AM fungi in a form readily used as an amendment to horticultural potting media for the production of vegetable seedlings.

        5 out of 5 stars BIOLOGICAL EYE!!.......2006-05-18

Are you studying and working in the area of developmental biology of animals? If you are, this book is for you! Author J. M. W. Slack, has written an outstanding 2nd edition of a book about basic ideas and facts of modern developmental biology of animals.

Slack, begins with an overview of modern biological research and how the mechanisms of development are very simple for animals, including humans. Then, he explains how the structure of organisms changes over time. The author continues by discussing how all of the genes in the genome have functions that are specifically concerned with development. In addition, he also discusses why it was the experimental embryologists who gave most thought to mechanism. The author also considers a further set of techniques that are derived from cell and molecular biology, but that have particular relevance to the study of development. Then, the author focuses on a very small number of animal species which are often described as model organisms. Next, he explores the experimental production of Xenopus. Then, the author focuses on the zebrafish-specific features rather than repeating the description of the common features. Next, he reviews the visible course development of the chick, and how it is superficially very different from the lower vertebrates and is much closer to the mammalian type. The author continues by describing how the developmental biology of the mouse has depended to a much greater extent on genetic manipulation. He also discusses why the first organism whose development was understood in molecular detail was the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. In addition, he also discusses Caenorhabditis elegans, which is a small, free-living soil nematode and has been used for developmental biology research since the 1960s. Next, he deals with the chief tissue types found in the vertebrate body with special attention to their cellular renewal. Then, the author explores the enormous overall complexity of the vertebrate nervous system. Next, he discusses why the invertebrate mesoderm does not show the same regional subdivision as vertebrate mesoderm. The author continues by describing how the endoderm is the innermost of the three germ layers formed during gastrulation. He also discusses the metamorphosis of Drosophila imaginal discs. In addition, he explores the overall growth, aging and the development of cancer in cells. Next, the author discusses the ability to regrow missing body parts. Finally, the author discusses the interface between developmental biology and evolutionary biology.

Special attention has been given to keeping this most excellent book compact and concise. New findings in the evolving fields of stem cells, regeneration, and aging should make this book attractive to a wide range of readership.

        Book Description

How much of our behavior is determined by our genes and how much by our environment? Fiercely debated but not fully resolved, we continue to grapple with this nature-vs.-nurture question. But data from the study of the developing and adult brain are providing us with new ways of thinking about this issue -- ways that, finally, promise answers.

Whether our personality, our intelligence, and our behavior are more likely to be shaped and affected by our environment or our genetic coding is not simply an idle question for today's researchers. There are tremendous consequences to understanding the crucial role that each plays. How we raise and educate our children, how we treat various mental diseases or conditions, how we care for our elderly -- these are just some of the issues that can be informed by a better and more complete understanding of brain development.

John Dowling, eminent neuroscience researcher, looks at these and other important issues. The work that is being done by scientists on the connection between the brain and vision, as well as the ways in which our brains help us learn new languages, are particularly revealing. From this groundbreaking new research we are able to gain startling new insights into how the brain functions and how it can (or cannot) be molded and changed. By studying the brain across the spectrum of our lives, from infancy through adulthood and into old age, we see how the brain develops, transforms, and adjusts through the years. Looking specifically at early development and then at the opportunities for additional learning and development as we grow older, we learn more about the ways in which both nature and nurture play key roles over the course of a human lifetime.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Molding the brain.......2005-09-27

This book reviews the state-of-the-art in brain development and on the factors driving its state. The author's viewpoint is the one of a neurocientist, hence more centered on neuronal molding than on learning. The author shows that what we call brain development is actually about partially limiting the adaptivity of the brain circuitry. Still, there is always potential for adaptation, age does not prevent the molding of the brain. The evolution of the brain is driven both by genetics and learning. So how we use it matters a lot! Saying that one is too old to change is just an excuse.

              Book Description

Certain long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) are thought to be essential components of the nutrition of infants, including those prematurely born, in the sense that they cannot be synthesises by the immature organism and must therefore be supplied in the diet. Breast milk contains these substances, but many manufactured infant formulae do not.
An absence of dietary LCPUFAs has been thought to affect the development of the brain and retina, possibly leading to abnormalties in cognitive and visual function. Considerable multidisciplinary research has been carried out to investigate this proposition. Diets free from LCPUFAs have been compared with supplemented formulae, or with breast milk.
The conclusions from this research were critically examined by a group of leading paediatricians, nutritionists, experts in visual science and developmental behavioural scientists at a 'Dobbing Workshop' held in the United States in late February, 1997. Each of the Chapters was precirculated to the whole group, commented on before the Workshop, and then exhaustively discussed. The Chapters and Commentaries which are published here have therefore undergone a more extensive peer-review process than is usually the case.

                Book Description

Developmental biology is a newly-developing subject that is attracting much interest because of exciting findings being made using a combination of classical embryo manipulation with more modern techniques. This book brings together for the first time, and in comprehensive, easy-to-follow protocols, practical instructions for all of the main techniques, from traditional embryology to cellular and molecular methods. It includes complete reprints of all the stage tables in common use for the main laboratory species. It will become an essential addition to laboratory benches of those using any technique as applied to embryos, cells, or tissues. It will also help teachers to design practical classes suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses.
