Book Description
The first journalism textbook for reporters who cover finance and economics in developing and transitional countries, Covering Globalization is an essential guide to the pressing topics of our times. Written by economists from the Asian Development Bank and the International Monetary Fund as well as journalists who have worked for Dow Jones, the Financial Times, the New York Times, Fortune, and Reuters -- and with an introduction by Nobel Laureate Joseph E. Stiglitz -- this invaluable resource helps reporters write about subjects such as banking and banking crises, pension reform, privatization, trade agreements, central banks, the World Bank, sovereign debt restructuring, commodity markets, corporate governance, poverty-eradication programs, and the "resource curse."
Each chapter explains the basic economic principles and current thinking on a given topic and provides
tips on what to look for when covering specific subjects;
a way to structure business and economics stories;
a way to use the Internet for reporting with links to more information online;
extensive glossaries and much more.

Excellent overview of the current issues in the financial, global market.......2006-07-25
I truly enjoyed this book. It is a clear and concise introduction to financial policies in which developing and industrial countries engage while globalization continues to affect the world. The book truly helps the reporter and layperson understand the world in which we live.

Book Description
Over just three generations and within the past half century the tiny emirate of Dubai - which unlike many states in the region has not had the benefit of huge oil resources - has raised its profile globally through a range of bold developments and clever ideas. These include its free zones for business that have made it a regional centre for many firms, its biennial air show, the Dubai World Cup horse race, its development as a tourist centre that is home to some of the most stunning hotels in the world, the building of the Palm island and the planned construction of the world's tallest building.
In Sand to Silicon Sampler and Saeb Eigner outline a model for how this large-scale rapid growth has been achieved and they pinpoint the reasons for Dubai's success:
- Leadership that is visionary, inspirational and embraces risks, that is demanding but supportive, and that builds confidence.
- A leanness of organizational structure and bureaucracy, which helps to speed things up.
- Openness to outside influence and competition, and to the views of all stakeholders.
- Good communication channels and access to decisionmakers.
- A business culture founded on trust - but not without regulation where it is necessary to reinforce trust and confidence in the system.
As Sampler and Eigner say in their concluding chapter, these are all things that any organization will benefit from.
Customer Reviews:
Turn it into an article.......2005-02-14
When abbreviated, this book would make a fine article for any management magazine. According to this read, it basically comes down to active, visionary leadership, mutual trust and strategic asset management. I bought this one for I'm very interested in the thrilling development of Dubai, but as a book, it only met my expectations partly because of the narrow scope. It's quite focussed on the economical and management side of the story, while especially the social and cultural side is underexposed. By introducing regional development models which are hardly being used to gain an insight, it feels more like reading a bold final management school thesis. It would have been nice if the authors would emphasis the fact that except for taxation of beer, there are no taxes in the Emirate, which makes it a corporation heaven even if you'd mismanage it, that Indian and Pakistani labour comes very cheap, the fair but undemocratic nature of the Emirates (no red tape!) and that Dubai has many Saudi Arabian investors who know that a less strict religious environment is good for business. One deserves a more in depth analysis based on the price of the book. Dubai does too, for it really is an amazing city.
Some useful information but..........2004-06-22
This book starts out very well, but after finishing the first half you realize one thing. This book could be half the size or less and still give you the same amou of information. The authors hash and re-hash the same point 5 times. While this can be very useful, when nothing is added the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th times it begins to wear on the reader. I was actually able to guess what was coming up in some paragraphs and to me, this is a bad thing. Like I said, read the first half and don't bother with the rest.
Historical overview for the astonished business traveler.......2004-03-07
The authors describe the historical developments of Dubai in a concise and fairly complete form. They clearly describe the success stories, and the pivotal people who shouldered it. However, the subtitle of the book, paired with the authors' background suggest that a true analysis will be given of what the fundamental parameters are in driving the success story. Also, they promise to make a link with Silicon Valley and Singapore. This fundamental layer of knowlege is in my opinion missing from the book, and thus it does not meet its promises. Nevertheless, what is there, makes it easy and interesting to read, and is a welcome addition to the library of the Middle East business traveler.

Book Description
Cows and horses, donkeys and mules, sheep and goats, pigs and fowl, even llamas are living on small farms and in backyard barnyards throughout the United States. But how and where are these critters being housed?
Author Carol Ekarius knows. In How to Build Animal Housing, she provides dozens of plans--with illustrated, step-by-step instructions--for species-specific shelters that are well ventilated, safe, appropriate for the animals, appealing, convenient, and a solid value for their owners.
The book is essential reading for anyone interested in animal health and welfare. It includes complete plans and step-by-step, illustrated instructions for sheds, coops, hutches, multipurpose barns, and economical easy-to-build windbreaks and shade structures. Ekarius covers new high-tech, portable structures made of plastics and fabrics, such as hoop houses and hen spas, as well as more traditional alternatives, such as straw-bale structures. Always practical, she enumerates the advantages and disadvantages of ready-to-build kits and modular barnyard buildings and includes designs for watering systems, feeders, chutes, stanchions, and more--the essentials that help owners keep their animals healthy and happy.
Ekarius wisely emphasizes the importance of careful planning, choosing an appropriate housing site, and complying with local zoning regulations; pest control, basic housing maintenance, and insurance costs are also discussed. Real-world advice from farmers and veterinarians on the types of housing and facilities animals like best enliven the text throughout.
How to Build Animal Housing is the most comprehensive and useful guide of its kind. For small-scale farmers, hobby farmers, do-it-yourselfers, and animal lovers, this book is indispensable.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book!.......2007-09-09
This book is absolutely fantastic for those who are just starting out. There are plans and pictures for every style and taste you may be searching for. It's easy to read...with great graphics.
handy.......2007-08-10
As a hobby, I enjoy capturing wild animals and putting them in cages. But I am fairly new to this hobby, so I do not own a lot of cages. This book has helped me learn how to build my own animal cages.
As a child, I enjoyed going to the zoo. But something was always missing in the zoo experience. Now that I am an adult, and capturing my own wild animals, I feel more fulfilled.
When I see an animal in a cage, it makes me feel important and powerful, especially if I'm the one who captured the animal.
Important details left out........2007-08-08
This is a great book for ideas. It falls very short on important details.
This book is about building animal shelters, but none of these plans
have a listing of the parts needed. This is doubly important because
these are complicated plans. I would like to build the rabbit house,
but now I am having to approximate what I need. The author needs to
remember that someone wanting to use this book might live 20 miles away
from the hardware store.
A little bit of everything, not enough details on any specific group of live-stock.......2007-07-24
I was looking for a book on how to build satisfactory chicken and duck housing. This book has a couple of plans for chicken coops, but not enough to buy the book. Why did I give it four stars then? Because the book is designed to give you building plans for various types of live-stock (pigs, hourses, cows, chickens, goats, rabbits, and others). The book does give you 60 plans like it says it does, but there is never more than 2 and at the most three on any specific animal.
This book does have a lot of good information in it beyond the housing plans. It has minimal spacing for your animals, safety and health of your animals, plus it has lots of good pieces of advice throughout the book that has been picked up over 30 plus years. If your like me and are looking to build housing for a specific type of live stock then this is probably not the best book for you (for chickens I would suggest "Poultry House Construction" by Michael Roberts). However, if your looking to build housing for various breeds of live-stock then this book would be a wise purchase. However, a materials list would have been nice (not enough books give them).
A little disappointing.......2007-07-16
I was a bit disappointed to find the plans in this book are USDA plans from the 1970s and were not in my view very creative or innovating or interesting. The rabbit house was just a shed of small cages, aimed at someone raising rabbits for food, I suppose, and not in any way pleasant for the rabbits.

Book Description
An Abrams favorite, now available in a new, fun format!
When Yann Arthus-Bertrand's astonishing book of photographs of domestic livestock and their breeders first appeared in 1999, The New York Times Book Review hailed this remarkable treasure as "a curiously appealing blend of art with kitsch...drama tinged with comedy." Now this wonderfully whimsical book is being rereleased in a fun new format.
Customer Reviews:
Love it.......2007-08-14
I gave this book to my Dad for Father's Day, years ago. Whenever I go to his house, it's there and I have to look through it again. Get a hardcover copy if you can ... it will wear out otherwise. :-)
I never tire of looking at this book.......2006-04-15
I'm not from a rural background, nor do I have any experience of animal husbandry, nor do I even have much interest in photography, but when I first saw this book in a store it simply drew me in.
Inside you will find page after page of superbly composed, full-colour photographs of various livestock breeds pictured with owners, owners' children or handlers from all over Europe, even some from as far away as Argentina. On some pages you will see soft-haired, placid sheep, on others tall and elegant horses, plump pigs whose faces almost seem to show amusement, graceful, homely-looking cows, on some occasions even goats or donkeys. Yet my personal favourites are the pictures of prize bulls. These handsome creatures seem to exude power, yet starkly defy their fearsome reputation as they stand patiently with their handlers, some of whom are just tiny children.
Yann Arthus-Bertrand's photographic juxtapositions of animal and master are often endearing, sometimes humourous, but crucially they are never, however often you happen to glance at them, dull. This book is not just a portfolio. Look through it and it will warm your heart.

Marvelous photographs of magnificent animals!.......1999-12-15
Arthus-Bertrand displays the most amazing photographs of breeding quality livestock that I have ever seen. Anyone who appreciates animal husbandry, agronomy, or farm animals in general will love this book. The photographs of bulls are exceptional!
A compelling book of portraits -- animals and their keepers........1999-09-25
This is the only photography book I've ever purchased, simply because I couldn't put it down in the bookstore. Since buying the book, I've passed it around to several friends -- some who are familiar with livestock -- and some who are not. Makes no difference. It's impossible to look at this book without going through the whole thing, page by beautiful page. The animals look strangely like their owners (or is it the other way around?). Each portrait is stark and simple, drawing your eye to the relationship between animal and handler. Buy this book. You won't regret it. Outstanding gift!
Book Description
Livestock biodiversity is integral to our culture, history, environment, economy and, most importantly, our future. Thousands of livestock breeds, from relatively small genetic pools, have evolved over time to suit particular environments and farming systems. This is both the result of natural processes and of human needs for specialized livestock - as our knowledge of genetics continues to increase we achieve a greater understanding of how this biodiversity evolved. This book offers a detailed and comprehensive overview of livestock biodiversity. It explores the history behind it, shows how livestock biodiversity can be utilized as animal genetic resources through breed development and by crossbreeding, examines the state of world livestock biodiversity today, and emphasizes the importance of conserving and developing the biodiversity of livestock.Special consideration is given to:- How livestock biodiversity arose and is maintained in relation to human society- How it can be used in sustainable agricultural development- How it can be conserved for the benefit of present and future generations- Why conservation biologists, as well as agriculturists, should be involved in its protection

Book Description
The third edition of a bestseller, Handbook of Microbiological Media carries on the tradition of CRC Press handbook excellence. This updated edition lists the formulations, methods of preparation, and uses for more than 4,000 microbiological media. With almost 30 percent more entries than the previous edition, the book includes recent information on international collections of microorganisms and expanded information on anaerobes and archaea. It also contains formulations and uses of media for isolation, culture, identification, and maintenance of microorganisms. The entries are arranged alphabetically by medium name and include synonyms, sources, and more. This reference contains the most comprehensive compilation of microbiological media available in a single volume. The only resource you need for all media types, it makes finding media for culturing diverse microorganisms quick and simple. With uniform presentations of media formulations and preparations, it presents easy-to-follow directions and "cookbook recipes" for preparing media. You won't find a more complete or user-friendly microbiology reference anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Hany in any Microbiology Lab.......2000-06-15
The Handbook is an enormous tome of media formulations. The index is the back is indepensible. One thing that would have improved the volume is more explaination of why certain components are in each media formulation. However, this is for sure a useful book for all who work in microbiology, from clinical labs to industrial to academia.
