I have read and re-read Farid's book, "Competing Globally, Mastering Multicultural Management and Negotiation", several times this year! He has such insight and wisdom to bringing the nations together in communication skills and taking down the walls in the business realm that I have never seen or implemented before! I have actually found myself to be a mix of many of the different cultures discussed in this wonderful work and it has helped me tremendously in dealing with American businesses! This is the "I'm OK, You're OK" of the business world! Thank you very much Farid! Cheers to YOUR Global Success!

Competing is about "winning". In this book, Dr. Farid clearly rises an awareness flag on the important role of "culture" to win global competition. A "Cultural Intelligent."

I attended his class once a few years a go in Indonesia. I was admired by his strategy to make poll during the class. This smart way guarantees a more and more qualified poll result since the respondents are accumulated by time to time. He is studying while teaching. And, I have seen these compelling information colours the essence of the book.

As I previously guess before reading, Dr. Farid will fulfil this book with some significant samples from his direct experiences dealing with people in various cultures in many countries. And, I am not wrong about this.
Inside, I have also found the answers of the winning and loosing situations experienced while working and doing international business in past. These are the real value of this book.

Another beauty of this book is, it again tells us that our own way and value are not the only one in this world. There are a lot more cultural differences from country to country, from one race to another. It is now clear why sometimes "Yes" means "No" in some cultures or the other way around. So, in order to properly react to win, the power and the way of thinking of the competitors need to be known. Dr. Farid tells how to simply deal with it Since the business move towards global. The local goes global, the global comes to local.. This book really provides an enough weapon and maps to win the global competition. Enjoy reading it as I did !

With regional and global opening up of markets due to WTO, AFTA, NAFTA, companies will have to learn to work with other companies in other countries to do business more effectively or at less cost. Generally selection of partners is done via short match-making sessions where due to cultural reasons, simple gestures can be misinterpreted. This can lead to loss of valuable marketing or partnering opportunities.

My personal experience in this aspect was in trying to market my company niche area in E-Government Consultancies to developing countries where these countries generally have a different native language, speaks English in a different accent. In addition, we have to differentiate between just curious inquiries or actual leads. Dr Farid's book provides important guidelines on small items which ironically creates the first major impressions. These are communications through telephone, casual chat over ice-breaking sessions, writing of letters etc.

I would recommend these book to managers who are entrusted to do marketing overseas and have to interact with their foreign counterparts. This is to ensure their actions or communications are not being misinterpreted and creating sense of distrust to their potential partners. In addition, they would also be able to gather if their marketing activities is making results

Book Description

Since its publication in 1998, this indispensable text has been the only systematic examination of corporate renewal, offering a rational approach for dealing with financially distressed companies. It contains the first logical and orderly discussion of a number of modern business issues including outsourcing, turnaround management, layoffs, quality management, and reengineering.
Now in its second edition, Harlan D. Platt has revised, updated, and expanded the text to include a new chapter on bankruptcy law, a profile of the turnaround manager, and an overview of the typical turnaround engagement. As the first edition did, this new Principles of Corporate Renewal cuts to the heart of the patterns, procedures, and pitfalls of bringing a corporation back to life and health.
Harlan D. Platt is Professor of Finance, Northeastern University.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Balance of Theory, Finance and practice.......2000-01-09

Dr. Platt in this book offers a balanced mix of academic and practical examples. This book is an excellant first read on many subjects in the turnaround field.

The book offers a good base of data to understand the statistics of companies trouble. It also offers for the academically oriented a wealth of references to explore individual subjects in more depth.

Some topics are so vast (Accounting, Bankruptcy Law, Financial Analysis) that several individual books are written on each subject. However this books hits the major hiighlights of the most important topics.

Dr Platt is also close to the industry and is a leader in the Association of Certified Turnaround Professionals and has personal relationships with many leaders in the industry. He has drawn on the experince to write a book that is also a very useful reference for the turnaround manager to use as a guide and refresher on engagements.

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable Addition to Turnaround Management Literature.......1999-06-14

Up to now the literature of turnaround management has consisted mainly of case studies and the personal experiences of practitioners. Some of the material is widely accepted as good. "Taking Charge" by John Whitney comes to mind. Some is a matter of personal taste. "Mean Business" by Al Dunlap is a recent example.

Harlan Platt has written what may be the first academic textbook for this little understood management genre. It is a considered analysis of the development of Corporate Renewal, which encompasses a set of management disciplines ranging from strategic change management, through problem solving techniques needed to turnaround a distressed company, to the triage of crisis management.

In Platt's book you won't find 'slash and burn" turnaround stories like those popularized in the mainstream media. Most turnaround managers will acknowledge that often layoffs and staff reductions are required in a turnaround, but only after very careful analysis of the distressed operation's remaining value proposition. And as Platt notes, insufficient attention is given to the number of jobs saved when a layoff is necessary.

The book opens with an interesting history of turnaround management research with helpful statistics on the main causes of corporate distress. Following is a comprehensive section on bankruptcy and failure prediction, which clearly plays to Platt's strength as a finance professor. I found the chapters on turnaround analysis and employee downsizing very helpful.

Platt also incorporates overviews of re-engineering, activity based accounting, quality and a very useful chapter on tax considerations in turnarounds.

The Principles of Corporate Renewal seems positioned as a text for the Certified Turnaround Professional exams administered by the Turnaround Management Association. And indeed, Platt has been instrumental in the curriculum development of the program. But the book is just as useful for those who are simply interested in learning more about the dynamic of turnaround management.

My only complaint is that I wish there was a bibliography, or better yet a bibliographic essay, on the current literature surrounding turnaround management. Yes, there is a reference section and the chapters are footnoted. However, it seems to me that at least two published turnaround accounts written by practitioners are missing. But perhaps I missed these in the footnotes.

I do international turnarounds for the telecommunications industry. The highest accolade I can give to Platt's book is that it's on my desk, ready to slip into my bag as an indispensable tool for my next turnaround assignment in China, Russia or wherever the opportunity presents itself

                Description:
The chemical composition of mucilage aggregates found during summer 2000, 2001 and 2002 in the North Adriatic Sea depends on the nature of the organic matter during aggregation, on the environmental conditions of the site of formation and on the transformations during ageing. The mucilages were composed of organic matter, together with a significant inorganic fraction. Elemental analysis revealed 12.5-32.2% of organic carbon, 0-7.3% of inorganic carbon and 1.0-3.7% of nitrogen. The C"o"r"g/N ratios of most aggregates were between 7.5 and 12.6, values close to those found in the suspended matter; higher ratios were found in large-size (>5 m) aggregates which are probably older. The content of carbohydrates and proteins determined in the aggregates, respectively, 15.4+/-8.9% and 7.9+/-4.8%, w/w, showed a prevalence of carbohydrates over proteins. Neutral carbohydrate analysis of purified polysaccharides from mucilage samples showed very similar signatures with high relative abundance of galactose and glucose. Humic, fulvic and humin substances extracted from the mucilages constitute an important fraction of the organic matter in the aggregates. The humin (a fraction insoluble in acidic and basic media) was present in all mucilage samples, indicating the refractory nature of a part of the organic matter in the mucilage. The iron and calcium could play a role during the aggregation process to form a complex with polysaccharides and humic fractions. The C"o"r"g/N ratio 10+/-2 found in the humic acids extracted from the Adriatic aggregates disclosed a marine origin. The low phosphorus content and the high C"o"r"g/P ratio found in the aggregates might depend from high bacteria activity or from the aggregation of organic fractions depleted of phosphorus. The principal inorganic species contained aluminium and silicon, part of which was of biogenic origin and was more significant in the offshore mucilage aggregates than in the coastal ones. The Si"b"i"o"g/C"o"r"g ratio showed that diatoms were always present in the aggregates, although it cannot be established whether these are the producers or these develop within the aggregates. es.

                  Description:
Humic substances are the main component of dissolved organic matter in all aquatic ecosystems, comprising a variety of molecular structures and functional groups. They bind organic pollutants and metals, thereby decreasing the bioavailability and consequently the toxicity of these substances in most instances. Recent studies also describe direct interactions and effects on organisms. Current studies also show that in some cases mitigation effects are stronger at lower concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM) and that toxicity increases with increased NOM concentrations. We hypothetise that at higher concentrations the mitigating effects are overlayed by direct effects of NOM themselves, thus these aspects were investigated in combination. So, on the one hand, this study demonstrates direct effects on toxicological parameters and activities of transformation enzyme systems of Daphnia magna, provoked by two NOM and one synthetic humic-like substance, HS1500. On the other hand, capacities of NOM and synthetic HS1500 to mitigate effects of the insecticide cypermethrin were investigated. Taken together, mitigation effects were overlayed by direct own effects of the NOM and HS1500. The NOM used were isolates from Suwannee River (XAD, Spring 2000) and from streams of the Svartberget forest (reverse osmosis, Spring 2000). The HS1500 was synthetically produced by radicalic autoxidation of hydroquinones. Suwannee River NOM at concentrations between 50 and 100 mg/l, and HS1500 (10-50 mg/l), but not Svartberget NOM increased immobility and lethality of the daphnids. All elevated the activity of the soluble glutathione S-transferase from 0.5 mg/l (HS1500), 1.0 mg/l (Suwannee River NOM) and 10 mg/l (Svartberget NOM) onwards, the microsomal glutathione S-transferase did not react. The glutathione peroxidase tended to increase. In the single exposure, the insecticide cypermethrin increased all toxicological parameters, elevated soluble and tendentially microsomal glutathione S-transferase activity between 0.001 and 1.0 @mg/l and tendentially increased glutathione peroxidase. In contrast to that, 50 mg/l of the NOM and HS1500 did not mitigate toxicological effects. HS1500 in combination with cypermethrin even increased immobility, compared to cypermethrin alone. Increase of the NOM or HS1500 concentrations in combination with cypermethrin did not increase mitigation as seen in the activity of soluble glutathione S-transferases, activities of microsomal glutathione S-transferase and glutathione peroxidase even decreased, relative to control, which can be a hint of enzyme disfunction or further damages in the cell. An increase of concentration did not increase mitigation. Mitigation was higher at lower NOM or HS1500 concentration, probably as a consequence of the direct effects caused by themselves. Consequently, direct effects are relevant for analysing the mitigation qualities.

                    Description:
Dissolved natural organic matter (NOM) is dead organic matter exceeding, in freshwater systems, the concentration of organic carbon in all living organisms by far. 80-90% (w/w) of the NOM is made up of humic substances (HS). Although NOM possesses several functional groups, a potential effect on aquatic organisms has not been studied. In this study, direct effects of NOM from various origins on physiological and biochemical functions in the aquatic plant Ceratophyllum demersum are presented. Environmentally relevant concentrations of NOM cause inhibitory effects on the photosynthetic oxygen production of C. demersum. Various NOM sources and the synthetic humic substance HS1500 inhibit the photosynthetic oxygen production of the plant as observed with 1-amino-anthraquinone, a known inhibitor of plant photosynthesis. 1-Aminoanthraquinone may serve as an analogue for the quinoid structures in NOM and HS. Most likely, the effects of NOM may be related to quinoid structures and work downstream of photosynthesis at photosystem (PS) II.

                      Description:
The partitioning behavior of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in five sediments was studied using equilibrium sorption experiments and multiple cycles of sorption and desorption experiments. The results of the equilibrium sorption experiments showed that the isotherms of PCP on five sediments were linear and the partitioning coefficients (K"d) were proportional to the organic carbon content of the sediments. The average organic carbon content normalized partitioning coefficient (logK"o"c) of five sediments was 2.83+/-1.48. In multiple cycles of sorption and desorption experiments, the five sediments were found to exhibit statistically significant sorption-desorption hysteresis, and the hysteresis indices (HI) varied over a wide range (0.72-11.82). Correlations between the HI value and the percentage of lipid in the total organic matter in the sediment indicated that lipid was the main fraction to affect the hysteresis phenomenon, i.e., the higher the lipid percentage the greater the HI value. The hysteresis phenomenon was mostly caused by irreversible sorption of PCP on lipids, including entrapment by lipids, which induced the slow desorption rate from the sediment. Because of hysteresis in the sorption and desorption, the PCP ecological toxicity would be lower than expected.
