Stale, and uninformed by real interaction with policymaking.......2001-05-04
Why bother writing a book that is just an outside observer's take on the issues. If this book showed any real authority it would be worthwhile, but it completely lacks any sign that the author is actually making policy, rather he is simply observing and harping on what the real policymakers are doing. He should have made it more clear that he had no real influence or involvement in policy. I felt the book was misleading.

Book Description
After a decade of sharp economic decline, Russia switched to an impressive period of economic growth. Yet the economic record is still mixed, and many key problems remain unresolved, both in the economic sphere and the political system. The focus is on economic dynamics in Russia, reasons for its hesitant opening up process as well as the special role of the natural resources sector which is expected to continue to grow. This analysis highlights the existing deficiencies of the Russian economic system and raises doubts about the sustainability of growth. Twin focus is on required reforms and endogenous forces that impair liberalizing trade and investment in an orderly way. Russian discussions on WTO and other international topics are reflected.

Book Description
Endogenous growth is examined from the viewpoint of economic history, institutions, international trade and political economy. The variance in institutional quality can be explained by historical differences in biogeographical potential for early agriculture. The expansion of output can lead to dis-agglomeration. Economies integrate, if the productivity of R&D do not vary too much for them. There are cycles, in which research people switch back and forth between applied and basic R&D. When one of the sectors is capital intensive, the balanced-growth path can exhibit local indeterminacy. The patterns of growth are sensitive to technology parameters of the capital good industry. Among the other aspects examined are the growth effects of tax competition, the political economy of employment protection, the equilibrium in a dynamic multi-sector economy and the dependence of growth on relative wages, employment and the firm size.

Book Description
A real imports of capital and intermediate goods declined sharply for highly indebted countries in the 1980s, these economies were faced with the need to substitute previously imported factors of production with domestic capital and labor. The study empirically analyzes the degree of import dependence of twelve developing countries. Estimates of the short-run elasticity of substitution characterize both imported capital and intermediate goods to behave like complements in the production process in the developing countries. Long-run substitution elasticites differ considerably among the group of economies, especially for imported machinery and equipment. The results indicate that inward-oriented strategies have not achieved the aim of reducing the import dependence of the developing economies. In order to visualize the implications of the differing degree of import dependence, a partial equilibrium econometric model is used to analyze the reaction of the trade account on external shocks and domestic policies in Columbia and Ecuador. Simulations show that the dependence on imported production means can transform an "adjustment with growth" of the external account into an "adjustment or growth" controversy.

Book Description
Since the end of World War II, the economic gap between rich and poor countries has increased steadily.
Trade, Growth and Development examines this disparity and assesses the reasons why some developing countries have been more economically successful than others.
The contributors provide both theoretical and empirical coverage of a wide range of countries, from some of the poorest in the world to the wealthiest. The essays examine recent developments in the theory of trade, growth and economic development, and provide an empirical analysis of policy and performance in Latin America, Asia, and Africa.
As a whole, the essays offer an analysis of traditional economic factors and emphasize the role of politics and institutions in the process of economic development. As famine strikes again in sub-Saharan Africa,
Trade, Growth and Development offers a timely reminder of the importance of sound development policy.
Contributors: Bo Sodersten, Pranab Bardhan, Ronald Findlay, Mats Lundahl, Tarmo Haavisto, Claudio Evald Nalin, Lars Pira, Magnus Blomstrom, Robert E. Lipsey, Thomas Andersson, Staffan Burenstam-Linder, Christer Gunnarsson, Wontack Hong, Alia Ahmad, Benno Ndulu, Arne Bigsten, Steve Kayizzi-Mugerwa, Gote Hansson, and Daniel B. Ndlela.

Customer Reviews:
WOW!!.......2004-04-03
This is an incredible--and credible--fact based view of what's really going on in the economy. Mr. Osenton has clearly done his homework, and presents this fresh material in a very insightful and enjoyable read.
The best business book I have read since Peter's "In Search of Excellence" two deacdes ago.
Bravo!
A Remarkable Piece of Work.......2004-03-09
This book is not only a wonderful read and an impressive history of business during the second half of the 20th century, but it presents the most logical understanding as to why corporations, industries - the entire economy - is having such a difficult time growing. The irony that Osenton points out is that we are victims of our own success - pushing for more and more consumption - and getting it! - only to begin to approach levels of saturation. He points out that there are currently more than 32 million more registered vehicles in the United States than there are licensed drivers! Talk about surplus. For the first time ever, someone has explained WHY - beyond the simple explanation of greed - that corporations are cooking their books in order to make the numbers. It's because their respective top lines are lifeless, and they have squeezed every penny, every productivity gain they could out of the corporation. Death of Demand helped me completely understand why employees are paying for earnings growth with their jobs - jobs that are either being cut altogether or sent overseas. What a spectacular analysis of our current economic condition. Bravo!

Old Reliable Almanac.......2006-02-19
I've purchased the Old Farmer's Almanac for several years and have always enjoyed them. The weather information is amazingly accurate! The gardening information is very helpful and the trivia articles are always interesting. It's imposssible to read one and not learn something. It's a fun read, at the very least.
A Must Have for Gardeners.......2006-01-16
My parents wouldn't think of planting their garden without consulting the Old Farmer's Almanac for the sign of the moon. They have great success following the guidelines for when to plant root crops, etc.
Others find it valuable for the weather predictions (covering 16 regions). Other useful info fills out the book (Best Fishing Days, a list of holidays).
A variety of fillers such as trends in homes and fashions and collectibles plump up the almanac and make good reading for a snowy day. I like that it has the symbolic meanings of herbs, flowers and trees. One article in this issue is "Toys that withstood the test of time." The almanac contains a little something for everyone. It has been published since 1792, so obviously it fills a need.

With its familiar yellow cover, The Old Farmer's Almanac is recognized not only as a reliable brand but also as a handy source of new, useful, and entertaining reading matter for every day — a fact demonstrated by annual sales of more than 4.2 million copies. The ageless appeal of the Almanac lies in its blend of timeless wit and wisdom and its broad editorial mix. Among the topics in the 2003 edition are the planet Mars; the magnificent part of our brain that is our memory; how to predict hurricanes, tornadoes, and other weather disasters; how to read tea leaves; household cures for life's little maladies; the wily willow tree; and our uncommonly accurate weather forecasts, precise astronomical information, and bounty of gardening tips and advice. As usual, the bookstore edition of the Almanac contains an exclusive 48-page reference section — chock-full of useful charts and data — that includes everything from the animal designations of the Chinese zodiac to how many trees are in a cord of wood.

MISSING; NEVER RECEIVED.......2007-01-04
I ORDERED OFA 2005, 2006, 2007 AND RECEIVED ONLY THE LAST TWO. THEY ARE GREAT, EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED. I CANNOT COMMENT ON 2005 BECAUSE IT NEVER GOT TO ME!

If you like this almanac, you'll love American Almanacs, A Living History, in which the Old Farmers Almanac is discussed in major detail from a conceptual, historical, and practical angle. American Almanacs, A living History is a great video or dvd for anyone who loves their farmers Almanacs.
There's nothing "old" about it.......2003-07-08
At one time, no home in America was complete without an Almanac. While that tradition has faded, the book that started it all--The Old Farmer's Almanac--remains a useful and interesting resource; one that no home should be without. The Old Farmer's Almanac features everything that makes an Almanac an Almanac, including its sunrise and sunset times, tide tables, and weather predictions for the entire year (and most of the time I've found them to be right on!). Amongst these essential facts, there are an abundance of entertaining stories that range from the historical and scientific to home and garden tips and amusing antedotes. This book just offers so much and I know that once you pick up, you'll be hooked. I've always found something of interest in The Old Farmer's Almanac and can't wait because the new edition comes out in September!
So much information I can only touch the surface........2002-12-23
What I like about the Old Farmer's Almanac 2003 Western Edition is that all hours indicated are in Pacific Time Zone. There is so much information in this almanac I can only touch the surface. There is a section of What's IN this year for men and women, and what's OUT. In other words, what's cool this year and no longer cool. Find out the right days of each month to get your hair cut to encourage growth, when to plant your crops and when to start your diet. You'll find a list of holidays, eclipses lunar & solar to look for and fascinating meteor showers. You will have the time of sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset for each day and time correction for your area. There is even a convenient knob hole in the upper left-hand corner of the book for hanging it where you need it the most.

It's great bathroom reading, it's the gardener's best friend, it's the amateur meteorologist's favorite publication.... it's The Old Farmer's Almanac, dishing out timely advice every year since 1792. One early issue described the almanac's mission: "We must strive always to be useful, but with a pleasant degree of humor." The 1998 version of this handy little book fulfills that goal admirably, with everything you always expected to find in an almanac--from long-range weather forecasts to the best time to plant peas--and lots that you didn't, including how to hypnotize a frog. (Hint: make little circling motions with your hand.) There's even a "Millennium Countdown" section, with questions from the Old Farmer's Almanac of 100 years ago as well as instructions on opening champagne bottles safely.
Book Description
A new edition of the annual reference furnishes long-range weather forecasts, tide tables, agricultural tips, predictions on Consumer Tastes and Trends, astronomical data, recipes, history, and lore, how-to advice, and more. Softcover.

American Almanacs: A Living History.......2004-01-20
If you are into the Old Farmers' Almanac, you will really love the new video that explains how Almanacs work -- check it out -- "American Almanacs: A Living History" -- it really is a wonderful companion to this annual magazine.
Something for everyone!.......2003-09-11
I love The Old Farmer's Almanac and this year it's better than ever! It's filled with features about little-known things that are actually pretty interesting. There's all you could want to know about George Washington's denture problems and the origins of ice cream. As always the weather information is detailed and they boast an 80% accuracy record. One great new feature this year is the addition of The Gardener's Companion at the end. Yankee Publishing, who puts out the OFA, also prints the Gardener's Companion twice a year. It's really fun for garden planning and care. The 2004 edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac is the perfect blend of useful information, educated predictions and quirky trivia. There's literally something for everyone!

Book Description
This book looks at the mathematical foundations of the models currently in use. This is crucial for the correct interpretation of the outputs of the models. A bioinformatician should be able not only to use software packages, but also to know the mathematics behind these packages.
From this point of view, mathematics departments throughout the world have a major role to play in bioinformatics education by teaching courses on the mathematical foundations of the subject. Based on the courses taught by the author the book combines several topics in biological sequence analysis with mathematical and statistical material required for such analysis.
