Transforming the Organization: A Social-Technical Approach
Howard W. Oden Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567202268 |
Book Description
The rapidly increasing rate of world change demands not just incremental change that organizations have used in the past, but fast, radical alterations of their strategy, culture, structure, and processes. Nothing less than transformation will do, says Dr. Oden--a complex, continuing effort that may be closer to revolution than evolution. Oden lays it out in his customarily clear, programmatic way. He covers actions that must precede the initiation of a transformation; guidance on how to perform the technical, social, and behavioral tasks, and the actions required to wrap up and integrate everything into a complete, workably transformed organization. His book provides a clear goal for the transformation, an excellent description of transformational leadership, and a simple, powerful model of the process. The result is essential reading for upper management in private and public sector organizations and for their colleagues in the academic community. Part I covers the preparatory actions that organizations should take before initiating a transformation, without which the effort is doomed to failure, says Dr. Oden. In Part II he covers the technical or engineering aspects of the transformation. First he develops a process map of the organization as the basis for process improvement; then he diagnoses the existing and future organization to determine how processes should be improved. In Part III he looks at the various organizational change methods that are available, conducts a broad design of the total organization, and then designs the human resource support processes for the transformed organization. Finally, in Part IV, Dr. Oden shows how to incorporate the redesigned processes into the existing system--the most difficult part of the transformation--and ends by showing how better integration can be achieved to provide better overall transformational results.

Bats in Forests: Conservation and Management
Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0801884993 |
Book Description
Although bats are often thought of as cave dwellers, many species depend on forests for all or part of the year. Of the 45 species of bats in North America, more than half depend on forests, using the bark of trees, tree cavities, or canopy foliage as roosting sites. Over the past two decades it has become increasingly clear that bat conservation and management are strongly linked to the health of forests within their range.
Initially driven by concern for endangered species -- the Indiana bat, for example -- forest ecologists, timber managers, government agencies, and conservation organizations have been altering management plans and silvicultural practices to better accommodate bat species. Bats in Forests presents the work of a variety of experts who address many aspects of the ecology and conservation of bats. The chapter authors describe bat behavior, including the selection of roosts, foraging patterns, and seasonal migration as they relate to forests. They also discuss forest management and its influence on bat habitat. Both public lands and privately owned forests are considered, as well as techniques for monitoring bat populations and activity.
The important role bats play in the ecology of forests -- from control of insects to nutrient recycling -- is revealed by a number of authors. Bat ecologists, bat conservationists, forest ecologists, and forest managers will find in this book an indispensable synthesis of the topics that concern them.

Walker's Bats of the World
Ronald M. Nowak Manufacturer: The Johns Hopkins University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0801849861 |
Book Description
From the African long-tongued fruit bat to the wrinkle-faced bat of Mexico and Central America, Walker's Bats of the World is an astonishingly complete guide to this fascinating, beneficial, and varied order of mammals. It includes scientific and common names, as well as the number and distribution of species, measurements and physical traits, habitat, daily and seasonal activity, population dynamics, home range, social life, reproduction, and longevity. Textual summaries present accurate, well-documented descriptions of the physical characteristics and living habits of bats in every part of the world. Endangered species and those having singular economic importance are given particular attention.
Through five highly praised editions Walker's Mammals of the World has remained the most comprehensive--the preeminent--reference work on mammals. Now for the first time a single large segment of that encyclopedic work--the section on Chiroptera, or bats--is available in paperback as a separate volume. Lavishly illustrated with pictures by noted wildlife photographers, the book includes photographs of many rarely seen bats. As in the complete Walker's Mammals, most photographic illustrations depictlive animals rather than skins or skeletons.
Since publication of the first edition in 1964, Walker's Mammals of the World has become a favorite guide to the natural world for general readers and an invaluable reference for professionals. Now Walker's Bats makes a significant portion of that work accessible to a new audience.
Praise for Walker's Mammals of the World:
"A reference bargain for any library where young readers and old enjoy animals."--Scientific American.
"These well-written, deep-digging summaries are among the best available anywhere."--Natural History

GREAT book on Bats!.......2001-08-06
To give you an idea of some of the content, the chapters include: evolution and diversity, flight (how the wings work, evolution of flight, demands on the bat), echolocation (how they make the sounds, how they avoid being confused by othre bats, using echolocation for navigation, use of echolocation in finding food), hibernation (facinating!!! how they stay warm, the cost of being in torpor state), reproduction & development (great if you've got a bat house and wonder what's going on in there), roosting behavior, feeding, and the importance of bats/conservation.
I just think this is a great book. I had so many questions about bats - the more I thought about them and wondered about them the more complex they became to me and this book really shed light on my questions. Its terrific. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in going below the surface knowledge of what bats are and what they do and where they fit in the web of life. They'e incredible.

The in-depth descriptions examine everything from the inner workings of a vampire bat's intestines to the structure of a bat's bones. Theodore H. Fleming Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0520236068 |
Book Description
The euphoria of discovery is the only motivation many scientists need for studying nature and its secrets. Yet euphoria is rarely expressed in scientific publications. This book, a personal account of more than thirty years of fieldwork by one of the world's leading bat biologists, wonderfully conveys the thrill of scientific discovery. Theodore Fleming's work to document the lives and ecological importance of plant-visiting bats has taken him to the tropical forests of Panama, Costa Rica, and Australia, and to the lush Sonoran Desert of northwest Mexico and Arizona. This book tells the story of his fascinating career and recounts his many adventures in the field.
