Book Description
A Course in Monetary Economics is an insightful introduction to advanced topics in monetary economics. Accessible to students who have mastered the diagrammatic tools of economics, it discusses real issues with a variety of modeling alternatives, allowing for a direct comparison of the implications of the different models. The exposition is clear and logical, providing a solid foundation in monetary theory and the techniques of economic modeling. The inventive analysis explores an extensive range of topics including the optimum quantity of money, optimal monetary and fiscal policy, and uncertain and sequential trade models. Additionally, the text contains a simple general equilibrium version of Lucas (1972) confusion hypothesis, and presents and synthesizes the results of recent empirical work. The text is rooted in the author's years of teaching and research, and will be highly suitable for monetary economics courses at both the upper-level undergraduate and graduate levels.

Customer Reviews:
My questions mostly answered!.......2003-09-01
I have been looking for a book that simply goes through the basics of money and financial planning without going over my head and I found it in this book. I think its great in that it just lays out what anyone should know about having and saving money and its easy to read. I would have liked a little more explanation at some parts or at least clearer cohesion within chapters, but it was manageable in any case. I think its also good for college students who might need to look ahead and start their planning. For me, this book lays the foundation and I will count on Suze Orman for the rest. :)
Better for Beginners.......2001-02-14
I was dissapointed with this book. It covered a lot of material, but seemed to skim many subjects and didn't provide very helpful suggestions. Ideas were mainly things like "avoid impulse purchases" and "look for discounts and sales." I suppose if you wanted a basic guide about budgeting and an introduction to different types of investments, this book would be good. But if you are looking for something more in-depth, then keep on looking!

Beardstown Ladies Guide to Smart Spending for Big Savings.......2004-02-10
This book has a wealth of information on how to save money.
It is directed to middle age and elderly people. For instance,
the book provides car buying checklists, brand name equivalents,
repair or replace decision-making criteria, insulation R value
statistics and the priority pyramid . The priority pyramid
ranks spending categories by order of importance. There is a
section of mail order drugs and comparative pricing to local
pharmacies. This book is worth the price of admission in every
respect. It will help you in your personal planning and
routine purchasing decisions.
Everyday hints.......2002-10-05
This book has a lot of every day hints that are timeless.
Pathetic.......1999-11-20
OK, Now that it is official that they didn't beat the market, they have reversed gears and try to address the savings part. Nothing to differentiate this from a zillion other such books. I should grant them one thing, they know how to market their name to catch on the gullible.

Customer Reviews:
General overview, but not comprehensive enough.......2005-06-03
I was looking for a second perspective on personal finance books to make a comparison with "Personal Finance for Dummies 4th Edition."
While the writing style is acceptable and the author seems knowledgeable, I don't feel there is enough content compared the the Dummies book.
The big thing I liked about this book is that it spends a chapter section about the present/future value of money and how money compounds in an interest-bearing account. The author shows a basic equation, but also provides some quick lookup tables to save time on calculations. This section does give a sense of how money can grow. Most other personal finance books don't even discuss the math or give examples, and I think everybody should understand the basic math behind this concept, as it applies to anything that gains interest (your investments, bank accounts, etc.) or charges interest (your credit card, mortgage, etc.)
The other thing that was good were the worksheet examples to allow you to tabulate your expenses and do a net worth analysis (list your assets and liabilities).
But for many other topics in the book, it gives too general description of the topics, and it does not offer too many examples or anecdotes to help reinforce the concepts. The Personal Finance for Dummies book does try to use examples or anecdotes to try to press the importance of the topic to the reader a little better.
I would not bother with this book. It is "ok" and cheap, but the content needs more substance.

Book Description
Millions of offices are equipped with two or more computers, but few are taking full advantage of their hardware investments. As Aubrey Pilgrim demonstrates in this new addition to the Popular "Build Your Own... " series, standalone PCs are most valuable when connected together into a local area network. That way, users can share information, work projects, and printing tasks. For businesses with limited computer budgets, small PC networks can be assembled quickly and easily, without the help of expensive consultants. Beginning with an introduction to the fundamentals of computer networking, Pilgrim describes a full range of LAN options and helps readers determine their networking needs. After describing available network hardware and software, he provides step-by-step, illustrated instructions for building and/or installing. Plus, Pilgrim reviews several software products designed for network use: word processors, databases, speadsheets, accounting, communications, desktop publishing, utilities, and more. Finally, he addresses the all-important management issues, including staff training, LAN supervision techniques, LAN management software, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance. There are dozens of networking books on the market, but until now, none were geared to small business managers who need to design a simple, affordable network of only five or six computers. With Pilgrim's solid advice and guidance, readers can avoid the high cost and the headaches of network installation and operation.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for the first-time LAN builder!!!!!.......1998-11-18
I found this book to be of great use when I was learning to build my own first network. The concepts are right on target. The book seemed very detailed and focused on all the aspects of building a LAN from hardware to software.
Great reference for Beginners!!!!!!!!!.......1998-11-10
Although some of the materials in this book are now out of date (which it why it gets 4 stars and not 5), it's concepts are simple and easy to understand. I found this book to be very useful and informative while going to school and taking network classes. I hope the author comes out with an updated version with the current hardware and software (and prices) now out there. Great reference for anyone trying to setup a small network!!!!!!

Book Description
Understanding plant dormancy is of great importance to sustainable and efficient plant and crop growth. This book had developed from papers presented at the 2nd International Symposium on Plant Dormancy held in Angers in July 1999. It contains up to date research material on this fascinating but little written about subject and is essential reading for those studying and researching plant and seed science.
Product Description
Strangely, the praying mantids make great pets in addition to being highly used for biological pest control. They are neat, clean, are friendly and react well to handling. This book provides detailed information on mantis biology, mating, care of life stages, food and the mantis garden. Illustrated with b/w photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful for amateur mantis breeder.......2007-05-27
Despite being a mere 40 pages, this book is packed with everything an amateur mantis breeder would need to know about anything. It tells you about how they mate, about the ootheca, making a mantis garden, food, nymph care, and many common species. One of the most useful features is that for each common food, it gives pros, cons, and how to rear/raise/culture them. In the species section, it gives identification help (of the mantis and the ootheca), and specific care requirements. I reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in mantises.
Not so much a book.......2007-03-31
As a pamphlet. While there was lots of useful information, the pages are all in black and white and there are no brilliant color photos as shown on the cover. The book was rather small with information crowded among the pages. It almost looked homemade.

Praying Mantids: Keeping Aliens

For Love of Insects
ASIN: 0801861748 |
Book Description
Praying mantids have fascinated people for thousands of years. In their Book of the Dead, ancient Egyptians honored the mantis as a minor deity, the "Bird-Fly," whose function was to conduct the souls of the dead to the netherworld. The Chinese bred mantids for fighting and celebrated their ferocity and foolhardy courage (they sometimes attack prey larger than themselves) in songs and poems. Today, mantids continue to seize the imaginations of serious researchers and backyard naturalists with their dramatic method of capturing prey, their bizarre "sexual cannibalism," and their appeal as "beneficial" insects.
The Praying Mantids represents the current state of knowledge on these remarkable insects, bringing together all that is currently understood about their ecology, taxonomy, reproduction, sensory systems, motor behavior, and defense strategies. The chapters reflect the strong personal stamp and intellectual commitment of the contributors, who have all done pioneering work in mantid research. Many of the selections present ground-breaking data on topics not previously explored. The text is enhanced by numerous illustrations, including a gallery of color images, and a final section of the book covers information available nowhere else on rearing and breeding techniques. The foreword is written by Professor John Alcock, a leader in the field of animal behavior.
Generously illustrated and admirably comprehensive, The Praying Mantids is an invaluable resource for researchers, students, and teachers in the life sciences, as well as a fascinating book for hobbyists and anyone interested in animal behavior and natural history.

Customer Reviews:
Not for the hobbyists for sure!.......2005-08-20
I bought this book because I wanted a complete book on Praying Mantids. I found this book to be way too excessif on the "mantids behaviors" and when I tried to find what is the right side to hang an ootheca no explanation were to be found any where in this book. For a book who claims to be complete! So unless you are going to be an University teacher who wants to specialise in Praying mantids, or is into dissecting them. I don't recommand this book at all, and the price ouch! Also this book claims to be generous with pictures, well! I don't see how a few pages in a very small chapter should be call generous.
Essential Reference!.......2002-07-23
Dr. Prete has put together a collection of the works of the finest research minds in the field, organized into a concise reference. Scientists and laymen alike will marvel at the quality of the presentation and the full color plates. Serious researchers will appreciate the quality of the data and the organized and well indexed approach. This volume is essential to the collection of any fan of the marvelous mantids.
Jacek Jarczynski.......2002-05-09
A truly fascinating book based on serious research in the field of entomology. The book caters to the readers who are aware and appreciate the beauty of pursuing knowledge by way of science. This is not a book for the beginner or temporary hobbyist wishing to only read about keeping a mantis alive. The concepts addressed in The Praying Mantids are often complicated and require a seriousness of thought and a scientific base to work with. Finally, The Praying Mantids is a long awaited and comprehensive book on mantids written from the perspective of a scientist.
Every thing about praying mantids you want to know!.......2000-09-20
Excellent book,a comprehensive reference for both technical and non-technical readers on the insects that continue to fascinate people after thousands of years. Zoologists, biologists, psychologists, and ecologists cover history, morphology, and taxonomy; ecology and mating behavior; hearing and vision, motor behaviors; defensive behavior; and techniques for rearing, breeding, and researching. A battery of color plates include several that resemble find-the-mantis puzzles. Information is also provided on permits and responsibilities and sources of equipment and supplies for rearing and breeding, and on museums housing major mantic collections. This book has everything you want to know, so get it!

Book Description
The “Gale Encyclopedia of Science” is written at a level somewhere between the introductory sources and the highly technical texts currently available. This six-volume set covers all major areas of science and engineering, as well as mathematics and the medical and health sciences, while providing a comprehensive overview of current scientific knowledge and technology. Alphabetically arranged entries provide a user-friendly format that makes the broad scope of information easy to access and decipher. Entries typically describe scientific concepts, provide overviews of scientific areas and, in some cases, define terms.

Description:
Habitat selection by mobile animals is strongly influenced by habitat characteristics that allow for effective predator avoidance, increased foraging efficiency and reproductive success. Often predator avoidance takes priority; this can be achieved through choosing habitats with high structural complexity. By contrast, the praying mantid Ciulfina inhabits structurally simple tree trunk habitats in woodlands and rainforests of northern Queensland, Australia. Field observations and experiments revealed a strong preference for tree trunks with a smooth bark type and small circumference. Subsequent laboratory experiments supported these field results, and further indicated that the preference for such habitat structures may be associated with a faster running speed across the smooth textured bark and around trunks of a smaller circumference. Ciulfina run to escape predation and actively forage across the open tree trunk habitat. Thus selecting smooth trees with small circumference facilitates increased running speeds and thereby may increase foraging ability and predator avoidance.
