Book Description
This book presents a model of the leadership process that identifies which factors create an effective leader at different points in an organization's lifecycle and which forces act as moderators to that effectiveness. The dimension of how the dynamics of leadership play out over time is what distinguishes this work from previous books on leadership.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent: should be a text bok.......2007-09-16
I found this book so interesting that I incorporated many of the concepts described in a business course I taught. I believe that "Corporate life cycles" should be a must read text book in every business school and a recommended reading to entrepreneurs managing startups and managers of large corporations as well.
A must for the entrepreneur!.......2003-02-05
If you are thinking about setting up your own business, or have actually started up yours, you better read this book. It could really save you many a headache.
I did not quite understood why companies would behave in given ways. Even worse, I had not realized how to cope with common entrepreneurial problems until I came accross Dr. Adizes' work.
"Lifecycles" is written in an enjoyable style. Once you start reading it you will not put it down. Dr. Adizes book deserves all praise.
Repetitous and Convoluted.......2001-09-23
Lots of common sense. A few good insights. But all buried beneath mountains of endless repetition. Simple ideas obscured by turning them into psudo-mathematical formulas. Endless repetition. Dozens of made-up acronyms. Did I mention endless repetition. Of the same ideas. Repeatedly. Author laments no room for specific case studies, which might have actually given some color and life to the book. Of course there was no room for real-life examples. He was too busy turning simple ideas into obscure psudo-math and impossible-to-follow diagrams. Repeatedly.
Why Read This Book?.......2000-05-09
If you are a person who desires to create change in your organization, improve profitability, manage the implementation of Strategic or Succession plans, or build a management development process, This book is for you! Most of my clients cannot put the book down as they read about their organization and how predictable companies grow and die.
I insist my clients read this book in order for me to help them build strategic or succession plans, as well as implement them. I do not have a CEO or Senior Exec, who has read the book and found it usesless or meaningless. This book helps me communicate with executives, as to what they see and experience within the company, in order for me to help them.
This is a "MUST READ" before you begin a "Change or Strategic Implementation Process." This is not a "touchy-feely" book. It is right to the point, and has good examples of each element. My favorite part is the Insultant vs Consultant discussion.
It's All in the Subtitle.......2000-01-06
Adizes really does explain how and why corporations (indeed all organizations) grow and die...and what to do about it. He has identified a series of specific "lifecycles. His analysis of each (within a sequence) is especially valuable because, as he explains each with meticulous care, each lifecycle is best understood within a broad as well as deep frame of reference. A careful reader of Corporate Lifecycles can thus determine (a) where his or her organization is now within the sequence, (b) what will be required to reach or return to Prime or Stable (the two most desirable locations within the sequence), and (c) what to expect in terms of obstacles, perils, etc. en route.
Because the ideal combination, the ideal balance, of four critical "factors" (ie performance, administration, entrepreneurship, and integration) will always be a "moving target" under constant "attack" by internal as well as external forces, each organization must constantly be aware of what that ideal combination is for it at any given time, what that ideal balance should be. Change is the only constant.
There really isn't another book quite like Corporate Lifecycles. My brief comments can only begin to suggest Adizes' knowledge, wisdom, and experience which enable his reader to understand how and why organizations grow and die...and what to do about it.

Even a company that dramatically improves its efficiency and product quality can fail miserably. Peter G. W. Keen names this phenomenon the "process paradox," a modern industrial problem that he deconstructs and defeats in his book The Process Edge. The basis of business acumen is common sense, Keen reminds us, but it must be combined with a rigor that measures pure worth. Processes--not only in customer service and quality assurance, but in larger, abstract notions such as acquisition and cultural initiatives--need to be approached in this basic manner. Using a broad, multidisciplinary approach (Keen was an English literature major in college but has since taught management science at Stanford and MIT), he immerses the theory of business processes in an economic bath, refining previously overlooked processes and debunking "magical" ones. Methods that businesses institute, after proving advantageous, can still build in value, and then must be incorporated into the entire business strategy. Keen substantiates his points with real-life cases and examples, from Dell and IBM to Wal-Mart and Boeing. Managers who wish to examine their businesses holistically and within sound theory will appreciate The Process Edge, but it will prove most valuable to managers who need to enact change now.
Book Description
The Process Edge proves that business process improvement is not a fad. It addresses the recent backlash against process movements like reengineering by explaining why businesses can decline even as process reform is creating dramatic new efficiencies and savings. Companies that experience this paradox are investing in the wrong processes. The book presents an economic model for deciding which business processes are worth the investment and provides the tools for applying the model. It shows that process can be the key to competitive edge. Applying the principles of The Process Edge will help managers resolve the process paradox by measuring the genuine cost and economic value of process improvements and investing only in those that will help their companies thrive.
Customer Reviews:
The Process Edge.......2003-02-02
Excellent overview and approach to project selection for business process improvement. Clear and original thinking on the matrix and balance sheet approach to process definition. Little detail however on what to do once the targeted areas are identified. Good companion to Good To Great by Collins (with similar levels of implementation detail).
"Keen" Insight into Process Improvement.......2001-12-11
Most improvement programs struggle with the project selection process. Mr Keen provides an interesting approach in identifying processes where improvement offers the greatest impact to the organization. There is also intriguing discussion contrasting benefits and value. This is a nice thought provoking book for folks tasked with identifying improvement opportunities in any organization.
Thought Provoking!.......2000-07-06
Keen excels at extending the definition of processes and providing a structured Salience/Worth matrix approach of thinking about them. An important read for developing an understanding of processes and their role.
Exceptional value! Replaces your TQM & Reengineering books........1999-10-08
The inability to understand the value of business processes is the pitfall of many reengineering projects especially in IT. Internalizing this book will certainly contribute to your future projects. A must in any business management library.
Poor follow through.......1998-07-01
The book raises some interesting issues (treating processes as capital, using EVA) but ultimately falls short somehow. The author points out that there are more processes than just the traditional workflow ones, but his examples are all of workflow processes. He never talks about succession planning processes or employee retention processes. The first few chapters were interesting but the rest was more or less useless.

Janice VanCleave's Microscopes and Magnifying Lenses: Mind-boggling Chemistry and Biology Experiments You Can Turn Into Science Fair Projects
ASIN: 0486234711 |
Book Description
With a simple microscope and this book you can embark on 59 exciting adventures in the natural world — make discoveries about the structures of numerous microscopic animals; find out what everyday objects and foods really look like at the cellular level; learn how to prepare specimens and slides. 142 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
The manual which should come with all children's microscopes.......1999-02-12
Microscopes in toy stores haven't really changed much with time. There are better-quality models now available, but the box still usually contains the 'scope and a few dozen glass slides of blood, insect parts, and such. Rarely are the directions enough to keep a child's interest in microscopy alive for more than a few weeks, at best. This book offers a guided tour of the microscopic world, in the form of 59 "adventures" which range from the kitchen to backyard pond or shoreline. More than instructions on how to capture a fly and examine its feet, the adventure includes a discussion of how the fly can walk on the ceiling. The microscope, then, becomes one gateway to rich discoveries in nature study. If there is a problem with this book, it is its age. This is a reprinted version of the 1941 edition. Many of the supplies recommended "for your laboratory table" are no longer easily available, while some are now considered hazardous. The fly mentioned earlier is to be killed with chloroform, for example. There are safer alternatives available, but the reader will have to do some further research. Nonetheless, it's a stimulating book, charmingly illustrated with many line drawings. The language is at times too difficult for younger readers, but a parent/child team of adventurers will find it useful.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Introduction to the use of a neglected tool--the magnifier........1999-02-12
It has always annoyed me that toy shops are full of cheap microscopes but few good magnifiers. Children are more interested in that range of things which are a bit too small to see by eye alone, but too big to put on a microscope slide. Mr. Headstrom here provides a set of 50 "adventures" using an ordinary magnifying glass or hand lens to examine many of Nature's small wonders. It is a brief but detailled guide to the study of insects, flowers, and seeds, with occasional visits to the slimy side of nature; snails, leeches, and the like. Some of the adventures are for the shoreline, others merely to the backyard or nearby pond, but all are fruitful, well-described, and illustrated with line drawings. The book is a reprint of the 1962 edition, but is only charmingly dated. The language is a bit stiff for younger readers, but it would be an excellent guide for the parent/child team of explorers.
