Customer Reviews:
You don't have to read it.......2000-10-30
This book covers 19 controversial issues. First the authors bring an issue, give some comments and give two articles that discuss the issue, but are contraversial to each other.
The reason why this book cannot get more than three stars is that the choise of articles wasn't really successful. Sometimes some of the articles seem not to make sence at all. Some of them don't answer any questions.
For instance, the one about Patenting Life; second article, which keeps ripping on Rifkin (the author of the previous article) instead of discussing some of the issues Rifkin mentioned in his article against Patenting Life. It's obvious that he's for patenting lives, but he doesn't come even close to some of the issues that Rifkin talks about in his article. He just tries to avoid them because he doesn't know how to answer to those claims. The author could pick a different articles in this and many other cases as well.
Also the second article of CEO Compensation Issue doesn't make any sence. Actually, the author of the article was Lisa H. Newton herself. She asserts that CEOs do nothing but writing memos and lay offs, at the same time receiving over 47,000 times (if I remember correctly) more than other people in developing nations like Africa and Asia do, and 209 times more than his employees.Common, this is not called Ethics in Business. She doesn't face the facts brought up by the author of the article who gave pretty reasonable arguements why CEOs should get that much compensations, why they are worth it.
Some of the articles do not provide with any references or sources of citations from outside sources when needed. I can mention one from Rifkin's article on patenting life.
The reason why this book got three stars is that, the issues brought by authors are pretty interesting and some are thought provoking. Even though one doesn't agree with the arguements, you can still learn something by reading them, and try not to repeat some of the blunders made by the authors.
I do recommend you to go for alternatives if you want a book on Business Ethics.

Opposing views on 17 major economic issues!.......2004-04-30
Here is the economics volume of the excellent "Taking Sides" series. Each issue is approached from two opposing viewpoints (these are articles written by various economists and public policy analysts), and contains a crisp introductory summary and conclusion. This is done in a lively, very readable format.
Are profits the only business of business? Does the minimum wage play an important economic role in society? These are just two of the intiguing issues discussed in this most excellent book.

Do NOT order from this company!.......2006-11-18
I ordered this book Aug 9, 2006. Today is Nov 17, 2006 and still no book or information from the company. I contacted the company, still no contact back. Wow, great customer service. Not!
An Excruciating Read!!.......2001-11-17
Although wordy with ALOT of jumping around, this book does manage to make some very good points regarding the modern economy and where its going.
As an "elective book" for my MBA, I found it to be a bit over-the-top for an "introductory" book, however, I admit that my own shortcomings in the area of Econ. may account for this.
Hope that helps - Regards
Comprehensive.......2001-06-13
I have used this book in a Master's level course in Business, Government and Society. It is an extremely useful text. The issues that the editors have selected are comprehensive and current. The particular authors and articles selected are spectacular. I am gratified to have found a book that so easily prompts high-level student discussion. It is fulfilling to hear students say that a book has made them think about the substance of issues rather than just accepting popular slogans. Anyone who looking for one source that explores many of the ethical issues that impact business today should pick up this book.

Customer Reviews:
not for the casual reader.......2007-05-18
What you're looking at here is the 13th edition, the latest as of my writing, which was available for sale starting April 2007 (the copyright page says it is copyright 2008). They come out with a new edition about every five or six years.
As you can probably tell by that, this is a book intended for use in a college setting, not for the general reader. It's basically a collection of essays about current economic issues, two on each topic, one "pro" and one "con." This is near-ideal supplementary reading for a freshman survey course.
The book has three sections, Micro, Macro, and "The World Around Us" (essentially Macro stuff), so it could be used in either course.
The issues are well-worn: rent control, independence of the Fed, pollution permits, etc. I should warn you that the articles reprinted here come from semi-academic sources (such as "The Washington Monthly," "American Prospect," "Dissent," and various testimonies to Sentate subcommittes), not popular, reader-friendly venues such as "The Economist" or "The Wall Street Journal."
So frequently the writing will be found to be dense and difficult, requiring slow and attentive reading. A couple of the essays even include equations, or extended math talk.
I would only suggest using this in a high school setting if you're talking about a crack group.
Here are the issues addressed in this edition:
MICROECONOMIC ISSSUES:
1. Are profits the only business of business?
2. Are CEOs paid what they are worth?
3. Is there discrimination in U.S. labor markets?
4. Is the new Medicare Part D Drug Benefit good health care policy?
5. Are health savings accounts the right medicine for the ills of the health care industry?
6. Is it time to reform medical malpractice litigation?
MACROECONOMIC ISSUES
1. Is Wal-Mart good for the economy?
2. Should Social Security be changed to include personal retirement accounts?
3. Should the double taxation of corporate dividends be eliminated?
4. Are credit card companies exploiting American consumers?
5. Should minimum wage and living wage laws be eliminated?
6. Do unskilled immigrants hurt the American economy?
7. Are protectionist policies bad for America?
8. Should we sweat about sweatshops?
9. Are the costs of global warming too high to ignore?
10. Are spending cuts the right way to balance the federal government's budget?
11. Has NAFTA benefited the economies of Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.?
12. Is the No Child Left Behind Act working?
13. Will the creation of an ownership society make the American economy more efficient and more equitable?

This debate style reader is designed to introduce students to controversies in marketing. The readings, which represent the arguments of leading business professionals and marketing researchers, reflect a variety of viewpoints and have been selected for their liveliness and substance and because of their value in a debate framework. This new title will be a beneficial tool to encourage critical thinking on important issues in marketing today.
Customer Reviews:
Which side are you on?.......2001-04-15
This book presents opposing (sometimes even clashing) perspectives on many current issues in marketing. As a beginner marketing student I find this book tremendously helpful in gaining an understanding of marketing fundamentals and an awareness of what is appropriately or inappropriately being marketed to us all on a daily basis. YOU decide which side you are on after reading the issues. This is an excellent format and a well written book.
An Excellent Survey of Contemporary Issues in Marketing.......2001-04-10
As a graduate student in business, I feel that this book should be an essential part of any marketing curriculum. Its format is nicely laid out by the authors in a way that encapsulates the most controversial issues in marketing today. Each issue is accompanied by articles which come from the best-known authorities in the marketing game. The best part of the book is that both sides of each issue are presented in equal proportion and there is no apparent bias by the authors. The topics are current, interesting, and thought-provoking. This is the best text I have seen in marketing in some time and I give my resounding recommendation.
Ivory Tower Hot Air.......2001-03-22
This book screamed: "Those that can, do; those that can't teach and write books like this." In a day and age when marketing, thanks to the reach of the Internet, has reached new heights in ingenuity this book is ingenuous and stuck in the 80s. With all the dot.coms there has to be a ton of proven marketing whiz kids who can teach all of us a trick or too. Instead, we have a fuddy-duddy professors who have no experience in today's marketing dynamics and techniques trying to tell us what they think it is all about. Where is the credibility?
Taking Sides: Clashing Views on Controversial Issues in Mark.......2000-09-20
This book is presented in a debate style with pro and con articles written about 20 current Marketing Issues.
I found the issues to be particularly relevent to today's market, several of the issues address the affect of the Internet on Traditional Marketing.
The authors have done a great job of finding articles which address one side and one side only of the issue. I find this much more enjoyable to read.
Some of the issues debated include: Is the traditional method of creating Brand Loyalty dying (because of the internet), should alchohol marketing be further regulated, should advertising in schools be prohibited, etc.
Book Description
This volume explores the changing nature of community in modern corporations. Community within and between firms - the fabric of trust so essential to contemporary business - has long been based on loyalty. This loyalty has been largely destroyed by three decades of economic turbulence, downsizing, and restructuring. Yet community is more important than ever in an increasingly complex, knowledge-intensive economy. The thesis of this volume is that a new form of community is slowly emerging - one that is more flexible and wider in scope than the community of loyalty, and that transcends the limitations of both traditional Gemeinschaft and modern Gesellschaft. We call this form collaborative community. The trend towards collaborative community is difficult to detect amidst the ferocious forces of market and bureaucratic rationalization. But close analysis of some of America's most successful corporations reveals three dimensions of the emerging form: DT a shared ethic of interdependent contribution: distinct from the uneasy mix of loyalty and individualism that prevailed for so long; DT a formalized set of norms of interdependent process management that include iterative co-design, metaphoric search, and systematic mutual understanding: distinct from both rigid authority hierarchies and informal log-rolling; DT An interdependent social identity that supports these organizational features: distinct from both dependent, traditionalistic identities and the independence of the autonomous self that is often associated with Western culture. This volume is a collaborative effort of leading scholars in organization studies to delineate the new form of community and the forces encouraging and constraining its growth. The contributors combine sociology and psychology theory with detailed analysis of business cases at the firm and inter-firm level.

Book Description
This completely revised and updated review book consolidates the most important clinical issues that medical students need to know to be prepared for questions on USMLE Step 1. The book reviews key cell biology concepts needed to study molecular biology, and reviews the key concepts of molecular biology necessary for clinical medical practice. Flow charts provide a clear overview of molecular biology techniques and how they are applied in medicine. A chapter on understanding the research literature provides a solid background in molecular biology protocol so that students can understand the purpose and thinking behind published research articles.
Customer Reviews:
Did not like this book at all!.......2007-08-12
I only read the first 2 chapters, but it was enough to make me turn to another molecular bio source! This book is EXTREMELY detailed. I mean, really --- do you really need to know difference between all of the different types of spinocerebellar ataxia for the boards? How about 30+ different ion transporters throughout the body? This book might work if you're good at filtering out unnecessary detail --- but doesn't that defeat the purpose of a board review book? For Step 1, I ended up using the previous edition of HY Cell and Molecular Bio, and it was perfect. A quick read, but just enough detail to get me through the molecular questions on Step 1. Good luck!
Good boards review.......2007-05-10
My medical school mol and cell bio courses didn't emphasize the same concepts that I think the boards (Step I) cares about. I'm not sure this book is totally worth $30, but the section about mol and cell bio in First Aid was sparse (especially about diseases). A lot of these diseases come up again in organ system pathology. Nevertheless, I thought it was a nice to approach medical conditions from the angle of molecular biology. For example, it's a good review excercise to look at all the different kinds of cellular receptors and get clinical highlights (ie: associated pharmacology or diseases). I basically used it as a quick read, and I will review the sections that I am weaker at in more detail. "Upperclassmen" have stated that the boards tends to emphasize receptors and signalling pathways, and I found this book to be a good resource for those topics.
As far as learning actual mol/cell bio - this is a typical HighYield book - no frills, outline format. I think it'd be really advantageous to have familiarity with all the basic concepts before using this book. For example, it's not a good place to learn how meiosis works.
By the way, the binding is terrible. My book fell apart after I used it for less than a week (granted it was super-intense all day studying, but still!)

Customer Reviews:
excellent for usmle prep.......2005-07-21
This is not a typical histology book...in the sense that it contains, pharmacology, pathology, physiology and anatomy and very little histology and histopathology. The book is extremely HIGH YIELD for usmle but not for a class in histology. It covers topics ranging molecular biology of signal transduction to the coagulation cascade. First year medical students will not recognize much of the info in this book and think it is "fluff"....it is one of the best kept secrets to scoring high in the USMLE, since many of the questions aren't exactly pathology or physiology stand alone questions, rather they are a mixture and a blend of many subjects. This book does that for you, it integrates many..many concepts. Its a great buy for 2nd years.
not so hot.......2005-03-17
this book is missing alot of information, especially if you are trying to use it for a course review. Some examples: no parotid, no tounge, no esophagus, no pineal, no tonsils. Also the figure captions are hard to read and the quality of the figures is only so so. All in all, not the greatest histology review book.
You could probably do without this book.......2005-03-04
If you use First Aid for the the USMLE Step 1, you probably will not use this book. There is a lot of "low yield" information disperese throughout and it may not save you much time to filter through all of it to make it worth while. If you insist, read through it fast and note the clinically significant items in boldface.
Great reference book, must buy.......2003-06-21
I used this book and the following which is also on amazon: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
The first book is written in an easy style to make histology much easier to absorb for medical histology. I found this book to be righton for the topics I needed to know for my medical histology test. I also like how the material was presented; it was reader friendly and a very thorough review. The second book that I used for my medical histology class called: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi was so on target with the type of questions asked on my histology exams. I highly recommend these two books to any medical histology students. I also wish I used these books when I took histology in undergrad. Anyway, I have brothers and sisters who have used these two books in other medical school histology classes and they got A's . Both books are must buys.
a quick review esp the pics r useful.......2001-06-27
u can read it in a day or two. and revise it easily. it contains imp topics although some chapters r mixture of physiology and patho. helped me to answer histo questions on exam.

Customer Reviews:
First and last Aid for USMLE Step 1.......2007-09-27
Very good review book for Step 1 neuroanatomy section - since this is very high yield. Cover all you need to know to tackle this field on exam. Covers more than FA but is not as exhausting as Kaplan notes.
HY neuroanatomy.......2007-05-07
Getting confused with studying anatomy of the brain? This is a book for you! It is far better than dozen of other neuroanatomy books! It gives you a lot of details and it's easy to read, too! I'm studying for the USMLE step 1 exam and I will keep it handy all the time!
Get it for Step I 'cause First Aid doesn't cut it.......2005-09-28
First Aid is money for most subjects, but it's weak on neuro. This book is a very good balance between too little and too much for this overwhelming subject. The High Yield series keeps improving in quality, and in the newest edition is even better at showing clinical scenarios and integrating other subjects like pathology or physiology (I used an older version and it's still pretty good, though).
I would like to say this is great for course work, but at least at my school they tended to test on obscure minituae hard to find anywhere.
This is all you should need for Step, which does feature a decent dose of neuro (about 10, more like 20 questions). It's also very good at developing as essential foundation of knowledge applicable for future use, which sometimes gets lost when scrambling to cram for course exams.
My big qualm is the pricing. It's a thin book, not a main text. Use the library, borrow it from a friend, split the cost, etc. High Yield makes a nice line of books but they need to trim prices for medical students.
All you need for step 1. .......2004-10-06
This is an excellent book and it's really all you need to prepare for your step 1. I used this book and answered every single question on neuro correctly.
Great Book To Use in Course and Board Exams.......2004-09-10
This book is very high yield and helped me ace the class and do really well on the board exam. One thing that this book doesnt have that is on the NBME is headaches, sleep disorders, and cell death. Other than that it has everything u need to ace the class. I highly recommend it!!!

Customer Reviews:
skimable.......2007-05-24
i skimmed through this book for my step 1 because some of its contents not necessary or were found in other books such as high yiel histo or anatomy and first aid.good to skim through for the boards, but if u dont have time first aid is a perfect alternate.Even if you decide to use this book, dont use it alone, use it with first aid, which was what i did. i ended up making a 229/95 in my step 1.
Excellent Review for a low yield subject on the Boards.......2007-03-31
This is much more concise than the new version. This little book helps you put the H.Y. facts of embryo together not just as a subject on its own but in conjunction to pathology. I would specially recommend the first 3 chapters to get a quick idea of embryo genesis and the cardio, respiratory, GI sections for quick kill on the congenital abnormalities that are extensively talked about in Pathology. I particularly recommend to read the latter chapters alongside with Goljan's Rapid Review Pathology.
this is like a mini review book for all subjects........2007-01-26
This book has information from different subjects, such as pathology, genetics, anatomy, physiology etc. I like the fact that it has lots of clinical correlations which link from different areas. some contents are repeated under different subjects in different chapters, I personally think that it enhances memory, some may find it to be redundant.
This book does have a little extra information which may not be required for step 1 exam. However, I think that it may be good for review or for the course study.
This book has a little too much information about genetics from chapter 21 to 24. For example, for spinocerebellar ataxia, it listed six types, SCA 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 17. Each has a separate paragraph with detailed gene abnormality. After all, this is an embryology book, not a genetic book.
its OKK.......2006-07-04
i read this book for usmle prep...it was pretty good...but had way too much information for usmle 1....i would reccomend using FA's embryo section as a guide...and read only sections in high yield that are represented in first aid(FA)...over all decent book...but overkill for usmle 1...
Great summary!.......2005-10-13
This book nicely complemented my Gross Anatomy and Embryology class and reiterated/clarified concepts that were conveyed in lecture. It also portrays great pictures of actual clinical cases. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!
Book Description
High-Yield(TM) Histopathology reviews the relationships of basic histology to the pathology, physiology, and pharmacology of clinical conditions that are tested on the USMLE Step 1 and seen in clinical practice. The book includes case studies that prepare students for the clinical vignette questions on the USMLE Step 1. Numerous light and electron micrographs and pathology photographs help students understand the structure and physiological function of organ systems and the pathology of diseases. Tables of laboratory findings in pathological diagnosis aid students in diagnosing pathological conditions and answering clinical vignette questions.
