    Book Description

Globalization has reached even the most remote areas of Latin America, pushing traditional peoples and habitats to the brink of extinction and offering a stark choice: adapt or perish. Local communities are scrambling to adjust to new market and social realities while trying to hold on to those cultural values that they regard as non-negotiable.

This book tells the important story of three Latin American communities experiencing globalization at the point of contact between tradition and modernity: Brazil's rubber tappers, Bolivia's Guaraní Indians, and Nicaragua's women cooperativists. Through exclusive, in-depth interviews, Heyck describes globalization and development in the words of people who are experiencing these forces at the grassroots level. The result is a multifaceted understanding of local and global connections and of the human, cultural, and religious dimensions of globalization.

          Book Description

The German economic and social system was once admired for its capacity to foster international competitiveness as well as social integration. In the literature on varieties of capitalisms it was even called the Modell Deutschland. But in the last years, plagued by mass unemployment and lagging behind in terms of economic growth, many commentators portrayed it as institutionally incrusted and hopelessly outmoded. However, the basic institutions underpinning the German model are currently undergoing significant changes. The Red–Green reforms of the labor market and the pension scheme, recent incidents like the take-over of German Mannesmann by Vodafone Airtouch, for example, or the evasion of collective bargaining agreements can be interpreted as significant attacks on the corporatist structure of the model. Thus, does the future imply a (more) liberal, market-style economy also in Germany? And if so, will this transformation solve the problem of mass unemployment?

Surviving Globalization? explores the future of the German economy within the institutional and societal framework of Modell Deutschland. The contributing authors scrutinize important economic trends, institutional changes and governmental reforms, ranging from corporate governance and industrial relations to macroeconomic policies, and from the welfare state to European integration. They assess the theoretical perspectives informing the current reforms and raise questions about the feasibility of institutional transfer.

Thus, Surviving Globalization? provides a comprehensive and empirically profound introduction to the distinctive features of the German economic model in the light of globalization, European integration, and German unification. In contrast to common notions about the German economy, it identifies not institutional rigidities but the macroeconomic exhaustion of Germany’s long standing mercantilism, its constant attempt to achieve current account surpluses, and the specific way of integrating East-Germany as major causes for its job crisis.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A nice introduction to Alaska's berry bounty!.......2006-09-12

The Alaska Wild Berry Guide and Cookbook is an excellent source for someone interested in making use of the many delicious wild berries that dot the Alaskan landscape. With almost 50 kinds of berries growing wild here on the Last Frontier, you're sure to be close to one or more that will work for jam, jelly or some delectable baked goods. The book's color photos are particularly helpful. My only real complaint with this book is that I'd almost prefer to have a smaller "pocket-sized" guide (sans recipes) for times when I'm out in the woods gathering berries. This would be particularly helpful for those hikes when you're bringing along a visitor or someone knew to Alaska. I'm looking for a specific kind of berry, but they often want to know the names of several varieties and it always seems to be the very ones that have long-since gone from my mind! Despite this small complaint, I give this book 5 stars and recommend it to anyone wishing for more information on berries in the Greatland!

                                      Amazon.com

Attending to the cooking is one thing. But before a cook can set hand to ingredient, there's the shopping to account for. All too many Americans have forgotten how to shop for their food, how to select the best possible ingredients. If the apple is big and bright red, then it must be good, right? Well, hardly ever.

Now imagine trying to buy the best possible berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries. Not to mention currants, gooseberries, and cranberries. With Kathleen Desmond Stang holding your hand, you are sure to do well in supermarkets and farmer's markets when berry season comes upon us. Even though this book bears the word "Northwest" in the title, the information is valuable anywhere berries are grown, bought, and sold.

There are two basic sections to Stang's diminutive magnum opus. First, there's all the information you are ever likely to need about the origins of some of our favorite berries, their characteristics, their various names, how best they are grown in the backyard garden, when to expect them in the market, what to look for, and the kind of flavor to prepare for. Then there are Stang's recipes.

Kathleen Desmond Stang is somehow able to take the individual berries and imbue them with the heart and soul of the Pacific Northwest. These recipes still have morning dew on them. Try some Cranberry-Orange Nut Bread for breakfast tomorrow, or perhaps a succulent Pork Roast with Raspberry-Pinot Noir Sauce for dinner, followed by Stang's delicious Raspberry Brownies. By using the information in the front of the book, you should become a wise and discerning shopper. Then, by using the best possible berry ingredients in Stang's recipes, you should become an absolute berry wizard in the kitchen. --Schuyler Ingle

                                          Book Description

Veteran berry-book author Bob Krumm has teamed up with his son to share more tips and quips on how to harvest and enjoy the berries in northern California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Idaho and northern Nevada. Here, in one well-organized book, is the information of a field guide (identifies 20 wild berries and fruits) and the fun of a cookbook (100 recipes for jams, jellies, pies, breads, and much more). Non-technical descriptions, habitat hints, and color photos of berry and blossom make identification easy.

Title: The Pacific Northwest Berry Book
                                          Author: Bob Krumm, James Krumm

The Content: This book is part identification guide and part usage guide for common wild berries of the Pacific Northwest. The following berries are covered: Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus discolor), Evergreen Blackberry (Rubus laciniatus), Trailing Blackberry (Rubus ursinus), Blackcap (Rubus leucodermis), Oval-leafed Blueberry (Vaccinium ovalifolium), Black Huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum), Red Huckleberry (Vaccinium parvifolium), Evergreen Huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum), Bog Blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), Dwarf Bilberry (Vaccinium caespitosum), Alaska Blueberry (Vaccinium alaskaense), Choke Cherry (Prunus virginiana), Bitter Cherry (Prunus emarginata), Pacific Crab Apple (Malus fusca), Red-flowered Currant (Ribes sanguineum), Golden Currant (Ribes aureum), Blue Elderberry (Sambucus caerulea), Coastal Gooseberry (Ribes divaricatum), Whitestem Gooseberry (Ribes inerme), Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum edule), Oregon Grape (Mahonia repens, Mahonia nervosa, and Mahonia aquifolium), Raspberry (Rubus idaeus), Rose (Rosa spp.), Salal (Gaultheria shallon), Salmonberry (Rubus spectablilis), Pacific Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca), and Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus).

Each genus is given an introduction, indentification tips, and several recipes for the berries. There are no illustrations. There is a 14 page color plate section that provides a photo for each genus covered in the book.

Short sections at the end of the book cover possible uses for each berry, versatile recipes, a blooming and ripening calendar, and a glossary.

The Writing: The writing is competent. Personal collection notes are intermixed with information about each plant.

Opinions: This book is hard to find and expensive, but it is probably the best available source for uses of Northwest berries. It is not particularly useful as an identification guide, but if you know one berry from another, it provides recipes for jams, jellies, deserts, and other preserves that I have not found anywhere else.

                                                  Book Description

Elements of Mathematical Ecology provides an introduction to classical and modern mathematical models, methods, and issues in population ecology. The first part of the book is devoted to simple, unstructured population models that ignore much of the variability found in natural populations for the sake of tractability. Topics covered include density dependence, bifurcations, demographic stochasticity, time delays, population interactions (predation, competition, and mutualism), and the application of optimal control theory to the management of renewable resources. The second part of this book is devoted to structured population models, covering spatially-structured population models (with a focus on reaction-diffusion models), age-structured models, and two-sex models. Suitable for upper level students and beginning researchers in ecology, mathematical biology, and applied mathematics, the volume includes numerous clear line diagrams that clarify the mathematics, relevant problems throughout the text that aid understanding, and supplementary mathematical and historical material that enrich the main text.

Mark Kot's "Elements of Mathematical Ecology" divides the field into two main categories, unstructured and structured population models. The bulk of the material on unstructured models deals with dynamical systems, though other topics such as the use of optimal control theory in harvesting are also covered. The section on structured models has two main parts, spatial structure and age structure, followed by a small subsection on sex structure. Space is built up mainly around reaction-diffusion equations, whereas multiple modeling approaches are covered for age structure; Leslie matrices, delay equations, and partial differential equation formulations.

Overall, the book is well written and covers a good range of models and topics.

                                                    Book Description

The cycling of elements such as carbon and nitrogen is of central importance in ecology, particularly when humans are causing changes to nutrient cycles on a global scale. This book develops a rigorous mathematical framework to illustrate how nutrient cycles operate and interact in plants and soils, forming the foundations of a new ecosystem theory. Powerful predictions can be generated covering a wide range of ecological phenomena related to nutrient cycling from a few basic equations. These predictions are tested extensively against field and laboratory studies of agricultural and forest ecosystems.
