Book Description
Align employee goals with organizational objectives! Development planning can be tough. You want to ensure that employees are satisfied, but you also want to confirm that they're contributing to the organization. How can you balance these objectives? For many organizations, development planning is haphazard and has little business rationale. This unique guide is the first to tie employee learning objectives to business goals. The Manager's Guide shows you and your managers how to establish a development plan with your employees.
The Employee Workbook, when used in conjunction with the Manager's Guide, provides your employees with worksheets and helpful hints that they will use throughout the year to track and measure their development.
The Group Facilitation Guide enables you to conduct a development workshop with large groups, or to conduct an orientation session that would precede organization-wide application of these tools.
When you present Strategic Employee Development to your managers and supervisors, they'll discover the answers to their performance review questions and learn how to make this powerful package work for them.
You'll use this systematic approach to stimulate increased organizational productivity and profitability. Employees will thrive on the real-life, logically structured development framework. No more worrying about what to say and what to do--harness the power of performance appraisal!
Use this comprehensive system to:
- Sharpen the focus of employee development
- Provide a basis for employee evaluation
- Contribute to employee satisfaction . . . and much more!
Book Description
Less than one-third of family-owned businesses survive into the second generation. Why? Often they fail because their owners or managers avoid making needed decisions about the company's future. As a result, the firms cannot stay intact through the rapid changes that take place in business. Heads of firms that do survive learn to anticipate the changes, crises, or problems that may arise and effectively plan to deal with these changes. In this new book, John L. Ward provides comprehensive, practical advice on strategies that will help family firms plan for and survive future growth and changes in the business world. He shows how to maintain growing, healthy, and profitable companies; shape future business directions; prepare new leaders; ensure the support of family members for the firm; help the firm continue from one generation to the next; and balance the needs of the business with the needs of the family. Ward describes how to create strategies for the business and the family and combine them to create a comprehensive plan that resolves such issues as how the firm's assets will be shared and who will succeed the founder. He offers tools for doing market and financial analysis of the firm and its competitors- and gives advice on how to use or reinvest funds to build a stronger firm. Ward discusses alternative strategic plans and shows which businesses and families they are best suited for. And he provides examples of family and business strategic plans, sample strategic planning worksheets, a sample financial analysis of a family firm, and a questionnaire on the values of the business.

Book Description
A comprehensive collection of state-of-the-art techniques for generating transgenic plants that are resistant to plant viruses via the cloning and expression of the coat protein gene. Its unfailingly reproducible methods, perfected by hands-on masters, cover the entire process from virus isolation, RNA extraction, and cloning coat protein genes, to the introduction of the coat protein gene into the plant genome and the testing of transgenic plants for resistance. Methods for testing for transformation by PCR and Southern blotting, the detection of RNA transcripts by Northern blotting, and the production of protein by Western analysis are provided, as are methods for challenging the transgenic plants produced and for detecting and measuring the levels of virus.

Book Description
Many international forums have identified the need for comprehensive, scientific methods for the pre-release testing and post-release monitoring of transgenic plants to ensure their environmental safety and sustainable use. In response to this requirement, a GMO Guidelines Project was
established under the aegis of the International Organization for Biological Control, to develop biosafety testing guidleines for transgenic plants. This second folume focuses on transgenic cotton that is resistant to insect pests in Brazil and addresses both environmental and agricultural impacts.
It draws out some general risk assessment guidelines and demonstrates the need for case-by-case analysis.

Book Description
This book explores the risks and benefits of crops that are genetically modified for pest resistance, the urgency of establishing an appropriate regulatory framework for these products, and the importance of public understanding of the issues.
The committee critically reviews federal policies toward transgenic products, the 1986 coordinated framework among the key federal agencies in the field, and rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency for regulation of plant pesticides. This book provides detailed analyses of:
* Mechanisms and results of genetic engineering compared to conventional breeding for pest resistance.
* Review of scientific issues associated with transgenic pest-protected plants, such as allergenicity, impact on nontarget plants, evolution of the pest species, and other concerns.
* Overview of regulatory framework and its use of scientific information with suggestions for improvements.
Customer Reviews:
A seminal, benchmark publication........2001-01-05
The product of the Committee on Genetically Modified Pest-Protected Plants' inquiries into the risks and benefits of crops that are genetically modified for pest resistance, the urgency of establishing an appropriate regulatory framework for these products, and the importance of public understanding of the issues involved with transgenic crops, this critically important report is an invaluable and timely addition to agricultural and genetic science studies collections. Genetically Modified Pest-protected Plants also includes a critical review of the federal polices toward transgenic products, the 1986 coordinated framework among the key federal agencies in the field, and the rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency for regulation of plant pesticides. Case studies explore the commercial production and oversight of transgenic crops including the most widely used "Bt" transgenic pest-protected plants. This is a seminal, benchmark publication that is highly recommended reading for agricultural students and family farmers, agribusiness professionals, governmental policy makers, public health advocates.

Book Description
Hairy roots are plant roots that have been genetically transformed and can be cultured on a large scale. They can replace the whole plant in many research projects, and offer a range of technical advantages over plant cell cultures. Hairy roots are now used in studies of plant secondary metabolism and its genetic manipulation, as hosts for the production of foreign proteins, for plant propagation in agriculture, in environmental research, and for the development of new engineering technology for large-scale production of plant chemicals. Hairy root culture is an interdisciplinary science, with important and expansive applications.
This volume is the first to be dedicated solely to the many facets of hairy root culture. The number of papers dedicated to hairy roots is rising exponentially, and with the increasing amount of research already underway this forms a timely publication. It is written and edited by acknowledged experts in the areas of hairy root culture and product synthesis, plant pro

Book Description
The monitoring and surveillance of genetically modified higher plants (GMHP) is an area that is still lacking an established international monitoring program. This volume presents ideas and suggestions by focusing on procedures in composing such a program and methods for detection of transgene dispersal and of environmental effects when GM plants are cultivated. Objectives and procedures for monitoring and surveying present and new types of GM plants are described, including herbicide tolerance, insect resistance and changed agronomic performance. Other issues covered in this book include: detection of GM plant dispersal and hybridisation; agricultural use and large scale effects; habitat selection and community invasibility; baseline definition and the time perspective; effects on ecosystems, vegetation and organism groups; sampling designs; data analysis and relevant statistical methods. In a final chapter, conclusions and recommendations are presented...

Excellent book for college microbiology.......2003-08-16
I used this book for microbiology class and it is very helpful. Tortora is a great writer. Each chapter is very organized and quite easy to understand. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
The second book had the type of questions that were asked on my microbiology undergraduate exams. My study group and I found both books excellent
