I did not find this book to be a good choice for the novice. I would recommend this to someone in the sales area of public relations but not the education area. Also, I think the checklists were quite long--too long for someone who is looking more for tips. Other books that exist that are more educational and beneficial to the novice.

Unless you are running your own business and have absolutely no PR experience, this book is not for you. I found it very basic and a bit outdated. No reference to online PR at all -- or even email releases! Save your money.

Very Insightful.......2000-05-11
This was a new direction that my job demaned I proceed in and I was very nrevous. However, this book was extremely helpful to me with the implementation and completion of various PR tasks. I find it to be a valuable reference that I cannot function without.

Horrible Lab Book.......2007-09-30
Well, I received the manual and I was expecting that I purchased the 7th edition. Instead, I got the 6th edition. I think they should of specified in the beginning that it was the 6th edition originally so I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. ALSO, a majority of the EXERCISES were MISSING! How can I use a manual that is missing questions! I decided to keep it since it had the same instructions as the 7th, but now I have to always photocopy the exercises from someone else. Basically it was a HORRIBLE experience.

Medical applications within each lab exercise are pertinent and relevant to my career interests. Great detail and excellent diagrams are helpful, although novice laboratory students should perform experiments under supervision of experienced instructors.
Pricey, but good.......1999-09-02
An excellent introduction into microbiology. It covers agar working techniques beautifully.
Some problems with it though. First, it references a text book for further reading. I don't have the text book.
Second, the expirements call for very specific bacteria/fungi/viral cultures that are difficult to obtain and mix if you are not using the book as part of a university class, in which case you'll likely not have any choice as to which text you use. Specifically a large number of the experiments utilize organisms which are potentially human pathogens, so do not expect to be able to aquire the raw materials for many of these experiments.
And last but not least is the price. However I've not found a better book for self teaching basic agar culture. Emphasis is on test tube culture, making the working materials a bit chearper and more available to most folks.

This current laboratory manual is based on the original manuscript written by the late Dr. Michael S Parker (1961-2003). Dr. Parker worked diligently in designing and coordinating the microbiology laboratories at University of Memphis. In this new edition, we substitute most bacteria used in the original manual with bacteria that are classified as Biosafety Level 1 organisms to improve laboratory safety. New chapters on the use of internet- and computer- assisted gene analysis are now added to provide students with hands on experience in this new area of microbiology and bioinformatics.
