Book Description
This important book offers a revolutionary approach to solving a range of social problems--drug use, smoking, unsafe sex, and overpopulation--by applying marketing techniques and concepts to change behavior. For example, it shows that at-risk teenagers are consumers who decide whether or not to "buy" safe sex practices. This successful approach is based on Alan R. Andreasen's more than twenty years of experience in consulting, teaching, and research with social marketing programs around the world.
Andreasen shows that effective social change starts with a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, and perceptions of the target consumer--who has ultimate control over the outcomes. The book offers a detailed explanation of how to design a step-by-step program that will move the customer from ignorance and indifference to action and ultimately maintenance of that action. Marketing Social Change offers a wealth of information for developing an effective social marketing plan.
Customer Reviews:
Very good basic book on social marketing.......2004-10-10
This book provides a very good overview of social marketing. I use this as a text book in a graduate course that I teach and find it useful in giving students a clear idea of how social marketing relates to the broader topic of nonprofit marketing, without requring them to wade through all of the additional information that a more general marketing textbook would offer. Author Alan Andreason is a leading thinker on the topic of social marketing and has organized this relatively short book in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to separate the preparatory work from the actual execution of social marketing plans.
The one complaint I have about this book, and the reason that I have not awarded it five stars, is that the examples used are less than exciting and I find that I need to supplement this book with additional titles so that my students get the bigger picture of how social marketing principles play out in various cultures around the world, not just in the United States. For those who are looking to expand their understand of social marketing in the developing world and in emerging economies, see also Marketing the Public Sector by Seymour Fine. Sadly, this great book is a bit dated, as it was published in 1992, but balanced with this Andreason book (or a comparable book by Philip Kotler) you will be able to give yourself a solid grasp of the topic.
The definitive book.......2002-07-17
This is the best book to give you grounding in social marketing. It also is a handy reference that you'll go back to again and again. It's well written and very accessible.
Book Description
Economists assume that people make choices based on their preferences and their budget constraints. The preferences and values of others play no role in the standard economic model. This feature has been sharply criticized by other social scientists, who believe that the choices people make are also conditioned by social and cultural forces. Economists, meanwhile, are not satisfied with standard sociological and anthropological concepts and explanations because they are not embedded in a testable, analytic framework.
In this book, Gary Becker and Kevin Murphy provide such a framework by including the social environment along with standard goods and services in their utility functions. These extended utility functions provide a way of analyzing how changes in the social environment affect people's choices and behaviors. More important, they also provide a way of analyzing how the social environment itself is determined by the interactions of individuals.
Using this approach, the authors are able to explain many puzzling phenomena, including patterns of drug use, how love affects marriage patterns, neighborhood segregation, the prices of fine art and other collectibles, the social side of trademarks, the rise and fall of fads and fashions, and the distribution of income and status.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a textbook -- Advanced knowledge required.......2004-10-20
This book assumes much prior economic knowledge on the part of the reader. If you are looking for an intuitive, digestable text that highlights the relationships between social and market forces... THIS IS NOT IT.
Becker's ideas, though compelling, are often lost in the academic murk of sophisticated formulas and equation analysis. For example, the first three pages of the opening chapter talk extensively about derivatives of utility functions as they relate to social capital. It felt like I was back in calculus or finance class. This book reads like a textbook. I don't recommend it for anyone with less than an intermediate, working understanding of economic theory.
Read this book!.......2002-12-07
Gary S. Becker and Kevin M. Murphy explore the market behavior in a social environment most magnificiently in this book. The insight that I have gained through reading this book cannot be measured by a mere mortal. Furthermore, it astounds me that the sales rank for this book is 72,711, when on my bookshelf it is number 1! This is a must buy for anyone, even if you have no prior knowledge of economics.

Book Description
Tropman goes beyond the notion of the "learning organization" to propose the "creating organization," an organization which sees that ideas--their initiation, development, and implementation--are the key resources for success in the 21st century. While three key resources are important to any organizations--money, people and ideas--the last has been developed the least. Everyone in the organization knows who handles the money; most people know who handles the people, but few know who handles the organizations' store of ideas. Indeed, as one executive said, "Why should we have such a person; we have no ideas!" As the environment moves ever faster, the long chains of command for getting "art to part," from "concept to customer" are no longer tolerable. People closest to the problem have to solve the problem--and problem solving means having ideas about what is wrong, what can be done, and who should do it. This book introduces the concepts of IdeaManangement and IdeaLeadership as central positions and functions for the 21st century organization. IdeaManagement will be one of the central pieces of the job description of the new manager. This involves not only the creation of the IdeaManager, but tasks that person to turn all of their employees into IdeaLeaders. IdeaLeadership must be a role broadly distributed so that everyone takes a turn at being an IdeaLeader. IdeaLeaders suggest, offer, propose, and point out new ways to do old things, new things than can be done with old ways, and new things that need to be done and need new ways. But no longer are IdeaLeaders going to be pushed to the edge of the organization and then eventually out of the organization. Rather they will become the central forces of the organization, and everyone else will be tasked with helping them implement the new ideas. The organization, then, will be idea-driven more than anything else. The ability to generate ideas and put them quickly into action will be the next competitive edge.

Superior Insights and useful ideas.......2001-06-24
I bought this book to supplement the standard text and coursepack of the core Organizational Behavior course in the MBA program here at the UM b-school. Frankly, I found this book more useful than the textbook we were assigned. Its insights were expressed more more clearly. This book is also better organized and more concise.
It is definitely worth the price and worth reading more than once. I keep it in a handy place on my bookshelf.
IDEA-DRIVEN REALITY-MOVING BEYOND THE LEARNING ORGANIZATION!.......2000-01-18
This book moves beyond the learning organization to propose the creating organization-one that sees that the initiation, development and implementation of ideas are the key resources for success. The book is about idea development and management; ergo...the idea management function is central to organizational success.
The author introduces the concept of IdeaLeadership, a role dispersed throughout an organization, involving everyone as an IdeaLeader-those who propose new ways of doing things and new things to be done. IdeaManagement, a part of IdeaLeadership, harnesses and directs ideas and is the core of the manager's job as we enter the 21st Century. These concepts are the basis for an idea-driven organization geared to the competitive environment in today's "only the paranoid will survive" marketplace.
The author examines virtually every element of organization through the idea lens, resulting in a highly absorbing and informative book. Tropman is pushing the envelop, advancing our thinking about organization in harmony with today's Knowledge Revolution.
Many of the organizational issues we deal with in our consulting work focus on the challenge of creating innovative enterprises with creative spirit. We find this book offers many ideas and insights from which organization leaders can benefit greatly. Highly recommended. Customer Reviews:
Almost there after only 10 editions!.......2007-09-24
EDIT: After thinking about it for a few days, I should have given this book 3 stars, but now I can't seem to change it.
So this is my book for my medical embryology course that I am taking right now, and I am extremely happy that I had an undergrad developmental biology course! It would be a pretty good book (4-5 stars) if it didn't contradict itself with little typos throughout. For example, in chapter 3, the secondary follicle is (wrongly) called a preantral follicle in a figure caption. In the text, the primary follicle is called a preantral follicle (which is correct). If you didn't know already, this book would just confuse you. In chapter 5, figure 5-4 will confuse you because figure 5-4b and 5-4c are reversed, both in the figure and in the caption. The effect of this error is a major one, leading you to believe that notochord development happens in a caudal to cranial direction when in fact it occurs in a cranial to caudal direction. In the text, it is stated correctly. Once again, if you don't know any better, you are just going to get confused by this book. Also, the editors must have been overly concerned with keeping the book small because the glossary of key terms doesn't even have definitions for primordial, primary, and secondary follicles. That is horrible for an embryology book!
Aside from the obvious lack of effort in editing, this book has several good things about it. Despite being a tiny book, there is a lot of information packed into very dense writing. Some parts do not flow very linearly, which can be confusing. Other areas of embryogenesis are written poorly (e.g. progression of the villi from primary to tertiary, changes in fetal/maternal blood circulation), but you can still manage to get the idea if you spend a little extra time on it. After slowly reading through, and barring any crazy typos, you will have a pretty clear and thorough picture of medical embryology. Also, The emphasis on clinical correlations is very nice and well written. There are many good figures for the clinical correlations (it is the other figures that are iffy, as described above). The CD that comes with the book is very nice too. It is cartoonish, but it animates VERY clearly what is going on during different embryonic periods of development.
All in all, this book is worth getting. Just remember to be cautious of errors, especially in the figures. Maybe by the 11th edition all the kinks will finally get worked out.
Langman's embriology.......2007-07-29
Great detail and clearly explained. Can be a little dense if no previous embryology knowledge. Clearly explained clinical correlations and pathologies. Detailed diagrams and pictures, and the interactive cd that comes with it is great for giving an overall view of the process. An excellent buy
