Book Description
Entrepreneurs, managers, and policy makers must make decisions about a future that is inherently uncertain. Since the only rational guide for the future is the past, analysis of previous episodes in industrial development can shape informed decisions about what the future will hold. Historical scholarship that seeks to uncover systematically the causal processes transforming industries is thus of vital importance to the executives and managers shaping business policy today. With this in mind, Johann Peter Murmann compares the development of the synthetic dye industry in Great Britain, Germany, and the United States through the lenses of evolutionary theory. The rise of this industry constitutes an important chapter in business, economic, and technological history because synthetic dyes, invented in 1856, were the first scientific discovery quickly to give rise to a new industry. Just as with contemporary high tech industries, the synthetic dye business faced considerable uncertainty that led to many surprises for the agents involved. After the discovery of synthetic dyes, British firms led the industry for the first eight years, but German firms came to dominate the industry for decades; American firms, in contrast, played only a minor role in this important development. Murmann identifies differences in educational institutions and patent laws as the key reasons for German leadership in the industry. Successful firms developed strong ties to the centers of organic chemistry knowledge. As Murmann demonstrates, a complex coevolutionary process linking firms, technology, and national institutions resulted in very different degrees of industrial success among the dye firms in the three countries.

Well worth its Schumpeter prize.......2006-08-13
This book well deserves the $10,000 prize which the Schumpeter Society awarded it. It throws a brilliant new light on the development of one of the key factors shaping the modern business world, intellectual property. As just one example, the first synthetic dyes were invented and innovated in England, yet within 40 years, German firms held 95% of the world market for them. Murmann explains how much this owed to the way the Germans gave their firms a level of patent protection in 1877 which was not matched in Britain until 1905, by which time it was too late.
Fine print.......2006-06-22
I bought this book to use in a class, but I only read four pages before giving up because it was just too much to read. Get a magnifying glass people. This book is written in fine print. You'd think they would publish it in a font that would comfortable to read. For that reason alone I returned it in favor of another.

Wait for Flash: Vol. 2.......2007-08-02
This book sucks... I'm not going to lie to you. This book was written by the same people who wrote the pilot episode for the Flash TV Series... how well did that one turn out? Demeo and Bilson try to make Bart an adolescent-friendly character "with huge shoes to fill". Yeah, we get it. The villian sucks and the art doesn't match the book at all, it is absolutely horrendous. Instead of shelling out money for this you should wait for Marc Guggenheim's (Of CSI fame) run on the character which should be out soon. His story is coherent, engaging, and you don't feel dumber for reading it, which is a bonus.
Better Than You've Heard.......2007-06-22
Yeah ... so ... um, I swear I've been meaning to write a review of this collection for about a month now, and just when I sat down yesterday to write it, well, we got some news about Bart Allen and The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive Issue #13. I promise you, the recent news did not alter my thoughts on this work whatsoever.
When this new series began, I honestly didn't get it. I didn't understand why they ended one of my all-time favorite runs with Geoff Johns' Wally West as the Flash. What initially put Wally on the path to greatness, after a bit of a rocky start, was Mark Waid's fun and fanciful writing, and Johns just kept that sprint moving.
So, even though I didn't understand why they were relieving Wally of his duties, I also didn't get very upset about it. After all, Wally was once Kid Flash, and he had to step into Barry Allen's boots, and, though it took many years, he eventually became a top-tier character in terms of roundedness and dynamic. I didn't see the point in tossing Wally aside, but I also had faith that Bart would come into his own one day. I love the character of the Flash, no matter who's in the mask, so I was going to stick with it.
Oh, but the fanboys cried havoc! I kept hearing the news series was terrible; Bilson and Demeo, the new writers, didn't have a clue what they were doing. Blah, blah, blah. As is my habit, I waited for the trade.
Guess what folks? It's not bad.
Granted, it's not up to the level of Geoff Johns' or Mark Waid's run, but those guys are seasoned all-stars. I thought it was a nice intro to a new series with some interesting plot points, art ranging from the very good to the serviceable, and while Bart wasn't as fun as he use to be as Impulse, or, to a lesser degree, Kid Flash, he also seemed to bring an interesting perspective to the character that I felt would be interesting to follow.
Did I like Bart as much as Wally? No, but once upon a time I didn't like Wally as much as Barry, and that changed in the early nineties when I was in high school. Bart had been around for a long time, I felt fairly confident he would come into his own and the writers would get into a groove with who they wanted him to be and where they wanted to take him.
Well, if you've heard the news, it's all a moot point. I don't want to give anything away, but the second volume of this series will be the last. I'm looking forward to reading it, and, with the news of Mark Waid returning to a Flash book picking up where the other series left off, I'm fairly stoked to read those, too.
But, don't let the disgruntled readers fool you. Lightning In a Bottle is not bad and, if you're a Flash fan, despite who's wearing the uniform, I think you'll enjoy it.
The Flash One Year Later.......2007-04-09
After the events in last year's epic "Infinite Crisis" all the DC titles were fast forwarded one year. In "Flash - Fastest Man Alive", Jay Garrick has been protecting Keystone City since Wally West, Linda and the twins disappeared last year. Former speedster Bart Allen (a.k.a. Impulse) returned from his battle with Superboy-Prime inside the Speed Force four years older, and apparently without any speed. Now Bart is working at an automotive plant with his friend Griff, a wanna be stud. There is an explosion at work by a jilted employee and Griff acquires superpowers and, to Jay's chagrin, becomes the city's newest hero, but at a severe cost. It seems that Bart has not really lost his power, but the fundamentals of the Speed Force has changed, and it scares him. As he falls in love with a scientist from S.T.A.R. Labs he desperatly wants to leave the hero buisness behind. As you could probably guess events spiral out of control as The Griffin (a.k.a. Griff) becomes completely unstable and stages disasters so he can become a hero again. This is the action packed story of how Bart becomes the new Flash, in spirit as well as in deed. It also explains what happened while Bart, Wally, and the other Speedsters were in the Speed Force. A very good story that, much like the hero, is faced paced, indeed it's over before you know it. Not exactly as existentially deep as I usually hope an origin story would be, it still should satisfies the action junkie and Flash fan with a worthy a cracker-jack story. Great introduction to the newest Speedster, and a new line of comics.
The Flash is back!.......2007-03-23
Bart Allen hasn't been the same since the Infinite Crisis. The former Kid Flash and Teen Titan went toe to toe with Superboy Prime; inadvertantly traveling into the future which resulted in the destruction of the Speed Force, the disappearance of then Flash Wally West, and his own aging into an adult. Fast forward one year later, and Bart is a factory worker in Central City with no powers, and wanting none of the Flash legacy. However, soon enough he and his friend Griffin Gray are caught in an accident that reconnects Bart's link with the Speed Force, and gives Griffin his own powers as well. Naturally, you know what's coming. Yes folks, we have a new scarlet speedster in town, and thanks to writers Danny Bilson and Paul Demeo, this Flash for a new generation already gets his share of a rogues gallery, as well as a love interest. Lightning in a Bottle manages to pack in enough Flash history as well as tie up some loose ends left over from Infinite Crisis (just what happened to Bart in the future?) while artists Ken Lashley, Karl Kerschl, and Ron Adrian, do solid work. The only real downside is that this first volume feels way too short, and the idea of Jay Garrick in mortal danger has been a Flash plot device for so long now that something better can surely be thought of. That aside, Lightning in a Bottle is a great new beginning for the Flash, and I for one am looking forward to seeing what Bart Allen will be racing towards in the future.

""You will never look at 'new ideas' the same way again."
-H. Wayne Huizenga, founder and former chairman and CEO of Blockbuster Inc.
David Minter and Michael Reid know innovation. For more than 25 years, they have contributed to the growth of such companies as Dole, Viacom, Sony and Einstein Bagels. Recently, they helped develop Blockbuster's groundbreaking "No Late Fees" campaign.

Lightning in a Bottle also explains the top 10 reasons ideas fail, plus the dirty secrets of the research world, such as:
Why focus groups don't work for new products
How market segmentation is often a sham
Why brainstorming in not effective in creating great new products
In the tradition of Execution and Good to Great, Lightning in a Bottle is the new must-have guide for business leaders."
Customer Reviews:
Good Ideas for Creating Ideas.......2007-03-17
Recently I came across an interesting book Lightning in a Bottle, by David Minter and Michael Reid. Mssrs. Minter and Reid are partners in a Denver idea development group. They have worked with companies like Dole, Blockbuster, Sony, Viacom and Einstein Bagels.
I like this book. It is different from other books on product development. Mssrs. Minter and Reid present a concept called Idea Engineering, based on disciplined, financially driven methods of product development.
Lightning in a Bottle is an interesting and entertaining read. Mssrs. Minter and Reid present a number of very interesting case studies to illustrate their points. I liked Chapter 5 - Why Nine out of Ten New Products Fail where they point out the shortcoming of commonly used product development ideas like focus groups, brainstorming, quantitative research and market segmentation.
Chapter 7 presents The Top Ten Reasons Ideas Fail:
1. Trying to sell things people don't want to buy.
2. The ideas don't make financial sense.
3. Giving up too soon on good ideas.
4. Pushing bad ideas too long.
5. No separation of good ideas from bad.
6. Thinking small.
7. Delegating idea development to junior people.
8. No specialized talent for developing ideas.
9. No process, or a poor process for developing ideas.
10. No real, important difference versus the competition.
However, the real meat of the book is in Chapter 11 - Idea Engineering: Seven Steps. Here is a quick overview of what the authors offer.
Idea Engineering
1. Learn. Effectively research, compile and sift relevant information.
2. Develop working theories. Synopsize that you've learned and develop working paradigms.
3. Develop ideas and concepts from the working theories. Bring research and working theories together to develop actionable ideas with maximum potential.
4. Conduct financial due diligence. Determine if ideas will actually make money --before you talk to consumers.
5. Talk to consumers: not in groups, but one person at a time. Test and modify ideas with one-on-one interactions with consumers. Avoid depending on focus groups.
6. Iterate the concepts by listening to consumers. Modify your questions and your concept during one-on-one consumer interaction. Employ, real time concept development with real time consumers.
7. Monetize the best concepts; predict real world revenue. Predict real world revenue by conducting a large-scale quantitative survey with consumers.
In my needs analysis work in my coaching and consulting practices, I have found idea number 6 to be helpful. You learn as you conduct interviews. Use this learning to shape and sharpen your questions and develop paradigms.
As I've said, I like Lightning in a Bottle; if for no other reason than the authors are not afraid to take on some sacred cows about product development. It has some great common sense ideas on how any business owner can develop his or her next product. If you're planning on introducing a new product, it is a must read. I am going to use the seven step idea engineering process to help me develop information products to augment my consulting, speaking and coaching practices.
Successful Approach For All Business Ventures.......2007-01-25
I recently completed reading this most provocative and immensely
fascinating Lightning in a Bottle book by Minter and Reid. Let me tell you that the lightning has escaped from the bottle and is now enlightening my new approach to successful business venture evaluation. Utilizing the basic concepts I learned from the book not only works for idea and product analysis, but is also streamlining my business investment decisions. Bottom line - I have discovered a great new tool that is already putting big bucks in my pocket! I can't recommend a business advisory publication any higher - five gold stars.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2001-04-25
This book arranges some good ideas in a natural manner. The explanations are clear and sufficient. But what makes it different from other articles in "change management" area is the auther's ability to make readers focus on what they could have been wrong, when they have conducted a plan in the past.
This is different. Too often, articles talk about how to make changes happen in an organization make deep studies on how people in organization will response and how the reader should do accordingly - without changing the reader/pioneer's stand. This one brings the topic back to what readers may improve in future actions.
Fun to Read and Full of Practical Wisdom.......2000-06-01
Lightning in a Bottle is the best management book that I have ever read - and that is saying a lot because after an MBA and years as a manager I have read too many management books! David Baum's book is FUN and FAST READING and PRACTICAL. Best of all Dr. Baum dispenses business advice that has the wisdom of experience. I used his advice - the chapter about facilitating change by getting all of the affected employees and managers in the same room. Over 100 people did a workshop together to find creative plans to implement an internal project. The meeting was dynamic and very successful and the general manager was impressed by the new approach. In summary, I highly recommend this book. I read it during a couple of short plane flights (it is only about 200 pages) and these few hours turned out to be the most useful 'training' time that I gave myself in the last few years.
Wonderful, Witty and Wise.......2000-05-27
This is a great book. I am an organizational consultant and I love this book. The author is able to communicate complex lessons very effectively. I will give copies to my clients so they can benefit from his advice and wisdom. Great book.
Terrific.......2000-05-24
A terrific read. Useful, specific, funny and very, very helpful. I particularly valued the chapters on the change cycle and the benefits people get in not changing.
Maybe the best book on the subject I've ever read. Much more accessible than theoretical texts currently available which I find cumbersome and difficult to plow through. This was a joy.
I only wish my friends would buy their own copy.
I LOVED it.......2000-05-24
I LOVED this book. Practical, useful, funny, refreshing. I was delighted with the specific suggestions and useful information provided. I could pick it up anywhere, read from anywhere. It's a delight to have a leadership book so accessible.
In particular, the chapters on the change cycle and the benefits we get in NOT changing were especially useful and thought-provoking.
My only problem was everyone who picked up my copy wanted to take it with them.

Like many people whose daytime activities do not depend on creativity I gravitate to a hobby that requires creativity. But how do you unleash latent creativity? Most of us don't have a clue, and we suppose that whatever creative talent we have will just naturally come out. Dr. Gamez's little book is the best "How to" book I've seen on this subject. I highly recommend it!

One of the bast wholesome novels for children!.......1998-07-02
I was loaned a copy of this book and it's prequal, the Magician's Bane. They are FANTASTIC!!!! They really show (in their own special way) how important it is to have and maintain a close relationship with God.
Entertaining and uplifting children's fiction.......1997-04-04
Excellant reading for children or for parents to read-aloud. Aimed primarily at the Christian market, the book is similar in style to C.S. Lewis' Narnia series. The storyline tells of the people of Eorthe who gradually fell away from their devotion to the King (God) and the evil that slowly took over. The only way to destroy the evil is for someone to release the Lightning In The Bottle, which was a gift given to the people by the King, but which was ignored, forgotten, and finally stolen. The good magician Waymond recruits the children of Earth (called the Kingsmen) to rescue and release the Lightning. Along the way, and in the end they discover just how important (and painfully difficult) immediate and total obedience to God really is. Wonderfully entertaining for all ages, the older children (and their parents) will be seriously challenged by the implications of the message

Concise primer. Not bad........2003-12-09
If you want a concise primer on bioinformatics, then this book may be of interest. I read this book as a review, but it seems that it may serve well for newcomers alike.
Compared to other primers such as "Developing Bioinformatics Computer Skills", this book contains less unnecessasary figures (e.g., central dogma, etc.), covers wider range of topics, tries to be less verbose.
A drawback is that there is little description at an algorithmic level (e.g., dynamic programming). However, the book does a pretty good job in conveying the main ideas about what such algorithms do and why they are needed. I like this book's concise and accurate presentation style much better than lengthy and confusing style found in many other books (e.g., Bioinformatics - David Mount). Another drawback is that font is small.
Overall, this book is not bad. I think this book's preface tells you what you can expect from this book, so below I excerpted a paragraph.
"We will tell you how to do things, but this is not a software manual for commonly used packages. They have their own manuals that are (mostly) much better than anything we could provide. Many of the methods we describe rely on quite complex mathematical, statistical or computational techniques. Often we choose not to describe these at all, but where we do we have aimed for a simple conceptual understanding."
