Book Description
'Globalization' is a term which dominates much political discussion at the start of the 21st century and is accepted by many as an inevitable process. However, as recent protests in the United States and elsewhere have demonstrated, there is considerable popular opposition to the much vaunted 'New World Order.' This book examines the key debates about globalization and provides a detailed and incisive analysis of the varied and often contradictory opposition to globablization within the United States.

How We Got Here/What We Have Here/Where Shall We Go.......2002-12-27
How do these ideologies merge? Well, they don't, but the book does examine how they arise from American ideologies of yesteryear. And that is really the book's strong point. How are American cultural beliefs exceptionalism, Fordism, Keynesianism, nationalism, racism, and conservatism coping with the "New World Order."
And if your interested the left or right's critiques of globalization, check the 'net. globalexchange and public citizen maintain fine sights, and I bet there are some from the right's perspective as well.

Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge
Linda Argote Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

ASIN: 0387225811 |
Book Description
Why do some organizations learn at faster rates than others? Why do organizations "forget"? Could productivity gains acquired in one part of an organization be transferred to another?
Learning curves have been documented in many organizations, in both the manufacturing and service sectors. The classic learning curve model implies that organizational learning is cumulative and persists through time. However, recent work suggests that firms also demonstrate depreciation of knowledge, or "forgetting". Such understanding becomes more exciting as one looks at the link between learning and productivity.
Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge describes and integrates the results of research on factors explaining organizational learning curves and the persistence and transfer of productivity gains acquired through experience. Chapter One provides an overview of research on organizational learning curves. Chapter Two introduces the concept of organizational "forgetting" or knowledge depreciation. Chapter Three discusses the concept of organizational memory. Chapter Four argues that analyzing small groups provides understanding at a micro level of the social processes through which organizations create and combine knowledge. Chapter Five describes results on knowledge transfer. Chapter Six discusses various tensions and trade-offs in the organizational learning process.

A tremendous achievement.......1999-09-29
I particularly liked her discussion of organizational memory and forgetting. What a great notion -- organizations CAN forget things! -- and Argote shows just how quickly that can happen.
This book belongs on the shelf of every scholar and manager interested in how organizations learn (and forget).
Excellent for both teaching and research.......1999-08-26
I believe this book is appropriate for anyone wanting to understand the basis of our beliefs regarding organizational knowledge and learning. I have just finished using this book as background for a paper on knowledge and virtual teams. I also will be using sections in my MBA course on Organizational Design.

Book Description
This book contains selected contributions from the Sixth Meeting of the International Geographical Union's Commission on Land Degradation and Desertification, held in Perth, Australia, in September 1999. Collectively, these contributions explicitly seek to understand not only the mechanisms responsible for the problem of land degradation but their social and economic implications, the means of overcoming the problems, and the policy instruments whereby remedial measures may be implemented. This breadth of approach is both distinctive and essential if the problems are to be tackled effectively. The authorship comprises of specialists (mostly geographers) from universities, research organizations, and government agencies, who provide a truly international perspective with contributions from Iceland to Australia and from the USA to Japan. Audience: The book presents current research findings which will be of particular benefit to professionals and practitioners, as well as researchers and tertiary-level educationalists who are involved with land degradation.

Asking About Cells
Allan J. Tobin , and Richard E. Morel Manufacturer: Brooks Cole ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0030980186 |
Book Description
The main goal of ASKING ABOUT CELLS is to evoke from students a desire to learn more about cell biology, which stems from gaining an understanding of the processes by which researchers discover the connections between cells and the rest of biology. By breaking down the typically encyclopedic walls of molecular and cellular detail, this text concentrates on presenting material through the energy of inquiry, revealing to students the questioning nature of cell biology. This exciting new cell biology text is designed for a one-semester, introductory course for instructors who wish to emphasize basic concepts and principles. This text portrays and emphasizes how the ongoing process of scientific inquiry has led to our knowledge of how cells operate. In this new text, cell biology is portrayed as a dynamic blend of curiosity and observation that has led to new questions and to a continuing quest to understand fundamental life processes.Customer Reviews:
Book helps engineers looking at an introduction to Biology.......2002-11-28
The main purpose of the book is to remove any phobia one might have towards biology. It neatly explains that Biologists do not know everything about cells (a common misconception of non-biologists). It also shows how they know as much as they know today. Finally, it has passionate interviews from the researchers who say why they continue to do biology daily.
The material is basic enough to be followed, at the same time, informative enough to go to the next level - understanding how genes work. I myself have now become a researcher in biology, thanks to this book. If you have never done biology ever in your life, this book is for you.

Asking About Life.......2005-09-06
What a Great Textbook.......2003-01-29
As those who are familiar with Asking About Life know, this is a textbook with a philosophy. That philosophy is to present biology not as a canonical set of facts about life, but as a dynamic, ongoing dialogue with nature, in which real people who happen to be scientists ask meaningful questions and take understandable steps over time to discover answers to them. The book mixes an engaging narrative style, a strong historical perspective, great examples, and authoritative factual knowledge into an eminently readable, extremely informative, and scientifically impeccable text. As a result, a student or reader can turn to this book not simply to learn about the structure of DNA or how the human immune system functions, but also about Rosalind Franklin's role in discovering the double helix and about why HIV "continues to perplex medical researchers." And, as shown by the book's section headings (How Do Zygotes Cleave? How Does Gastrulation Set Up the Three-Layered Structure?), it embodies the truth that the best scientific questions start not with "what" but with "how."
Asking About Life is also full of beautiful, crystal-clear photos and illustrations, many of which, like the text, do a wonderful job of depicting not just static objects, but dynamic processes.
I can't imagine a better biology textbook.
