Book Description

Cap Gemini Ernst & Young's Tom McGehee reveals the keys to thriving in today's world of business. In this incisive and practical book, Tom McGehee unveils techniques he developed in Cap Gemini Ernst & Young's Accelerated Solutions Environments to help companies achieve radical innovation. Whoosh presents groundbreaking formulas to bring about sweeping adjustments in business, and guides organizations to jettison deadwood ideals in favor of a focus on the cutting edge. It offers a blueprint for a better type of organization--called a Creation Company--that generates ideas by the truckload. Creation Companies do not hesitate to abandon the industrial age artifacts--best practices, mission statements, policy manuals, etc.--that place false barriers between people and achievement. Whoosh will lead companies, and the individuals within them, to strive for and ultimately achieve the state of Whoosh that will transform the workplace right before their eyes.

1 out of 5 stars Smae old Stuff.......2001-09-28

This whole book is based on the work of so many others and doesn't really offer any new ideas. Group think, fast business, keep up with the times, all of these ideas have been floating around for at least a decade if not longer. I suggest reading books on the subject that are ten years old. You'll get the same basic stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Creative and Intensive Collaboration in "The Fast Lane".......2001-08-20

In the Introduction, McGehee suggests the need for ýnew methodsý for leaders and managers in todayýs workplace. ýAs I see it, organizations face two choices. The first option is to remain the same, emphasizing current methods of compliance, by which I mean consistently focusing on what the company has done, not on what it can do. That method calls for constantly measuring past performance, focusing on problem solving to regain what youýve lost, rigidly holding onto past models of success, and creating experts in various specialties.ý McGehee thinks he has a much better idea and I wholeheartedly agree. ýOr, an organization can become a Creation Company. Creation Companies see the changing nature of work as one of the greatest opportunities of our time, and they understand that the opportunity can only be seized by unleashing the individuals within the organization. What this means is allowing individuals the freedom to explore, discover, and take action on the organizationýs behalf, in real time.ý In his thought-provoking book, McGehee explains HOW.

He examines three trends (cultural, technological, and structural) which will eventually determine whether or not a given organization survives. He characterizes the first as the ýDeath of the Corporate Mythý: there are no jobs for life, no careers even, not in the traditional sense. The second is manifest in the rapid rise of portals for real time, instant information sharing, and Internet communities. As for the third trend, organizations (willingly or not) are being changed from stand-alone hierarchies to interconnected webs of alliances, partnerships, and outsourcing relationships. Unlike Compliance Companies, Creation Companies have leaders who emphasize freedom, not control;, an understanding that success means creating the new, not replicating the old; and finally, have a work style that values individual expression and collaborative work, rather than a work style that values group conformity and individual effort which ensures that conformity. Two other recently published books address many of the same issues: Hamelýs Leading the Revolution and The Cluetrain Manifesto co-authored by Locke, Levine, Searls, and Weinburger.

The ýwhooshý to which the title refers what can happen in a Creation Company when, as one executive explained, ýWe were all working hard. We were heading in the right direction and the next thing you know, things were just falling our way and we were running and gunning and boom, we were there. Thatýs what [italics] whoosh feels like.ý In other words, those involved are in active, indeed intensive collaboration. Together, they enter what has been referred to in competitive athletics as ýthe zone.ý The basketball touches only the bottom of the net. For a batter, each baseball thrown by the pitcher seems to be the size of a melon. For collaborators such as those described in Bennisý Organizing Genius, there is a moment when they finally realize how to create the first nuclear weapon (The Manhattan Project) or the first feature-length animated film (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs) or the first personal computer (Xerox PARC). All of the hard work, countless failures, and personal sacrifices have finally made this shared moment possible. There is a collective adrenaline ýrush.ý

Such a moment is obviously rare but virtually (no pun intended) impossible in Compliance Companies which, in terms of their culture and structure, are antithetical to a whoosh. McGehee correctly stresses the importance of rigorous and constant ýconversationsý about what an ortganization really values most. What are its non-negotiable values? Do these values nourish and enrich what are the dominant components of a Creation Company? Specifically, leaders who emphasize freedom, not control, an understanding that success means creating the new, not replicating the old; and finally, have a work style that values individual expression and collaborative work, rather than a work style that values group conformity and individual effort which ensures that conformity.

If you believe in the values of a Creation Company and are currently involved in a Compliance Company, you have two choices: either do everything possible to help it become a Creation Company or leave it and become involved with one which is. Keep in mind that anyone who is totally committed to those values is viewed as dangerous to those who donýt. For me, one of this brilliant bookýs most important points is that Creation Companies are (by nature) a serious threat to Compliance Companies. They have unleashed, nourished, and sustained a creative spirit which achieves for them a decisive competitive advantage. McGehee urges his reader to challenge and test the examples and models he provides. ýUse them to change yourself and your organization. Use them to develop creative possibility, and to unleash your own [italics] whoosh.ý If you accept the challenge, through this book, McGehee will accompany you each step of the way. The decision is yours.

4 out of 5 stars Some Gems are Here.......2001-08-16

Does the world really need another book on how to re-make and lead high performing companies? If the reaction of many companies to the recent downturn is any indication, then no, not one book, but probably 1,000 more books until the business world "gets it." There are some important concepts in this book that should be fairly easy to take away and implement--once a company generates the corporate will to do so. One is the difference in mindset between running what the author calls a creation company and running the more common type of company, which he calls a compliance company. The second centers on the topic of chapter five--the art of collaboration. While collaboration has received a great deal of lip service in recent years, the author lays out some simple characteristics and a simple process to remind everyone how to do actually do it. Collaboration will become a more important ingredient for survival over the next decade, regardless of which way the economy turns. Brian Gillooly of Information Week thinks it's so important that he's chosen it as the theme of their annual conference this September. The third important concept is the chapter on models. Senge popularized the idea of mental models, but McGehee has some nice insights to add.

The book is not a substitute for an MBA, but an MBA is not a substitute for insight, either. We're all in the process now of watching a whole new generation of businesses and business leaders analyse themselves into the ground and demonstrate a failure to focus on their ability--and the ability of their people--to create something good and powerful out of adversity.

    Book Description

Recent advances in biotechnology, spurred by the Human Genome Project, have resulted in the accumulation of vast amounts of new data. Ontologies -- computer-readable, precise formulations of concepts (and the relationship among them) in a given field -- are a critical framework for coping with the exponential growth of valuable biological data generated by high-output technologies. This book introduces the key concepts and applications of ontologies and ontology languages in bioinformatics and will be an essential guide for bioinformaticists, computer scientists, and life science researchers.

The three parts of Ontologies for Bioinformatics ask, and answer, three pivotal questions: what ontologies are; how ontologies are used; and what ontologies could be (which focuses on how ontologies could be used for reasoning with uncertainty). The authors first introduce the notion of an ontology, from hierarchically organized ontologies to more general network organizations, and survey the best-known ontologies in biology and medicine. They show how to construct and use ontologies, classifying uses into three categories: querying, viewing, and transforming data to serve diverse purposes. Contrasting deductive, or Boolean, logic with inductive reasoning, they describe the goal of a synthesis that supports both styles of reasoning. They discuss Bayesian networks as a way of expressing uncertainty, describe data fusion, and propose that the World Wide Web can be extended to support reasoning with uncertainty. They call this inductive reasoning web the Bayesian web.

5 out of 5 stars Very lucid explanations.......2006-11-14

One of the most clearly written books I have found on the topic. I agree with a previous reviewer that some areas were not covered, but the ones that were are well described.

I would love to see a follow-on that reviews major ontology works in progress and explains when and how to use them and how to effectively map from one domain or specialty to another.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book of how we apply Ontology into real life application........2006-11-10

I have been working on Model Driven Architecture, Meta-data driven software, Modeling tools and Ontology for over 4 years. I have also implemented a suite of software supporting MDA and Ontologies. The material that this books covered just speaks my words out. Now, I can easily articulate my MDA/Ontology problems out with this book. Life is so easy with the help of a book which is in line of my work. Hooray!

3 out of 5 stars Title can mislead: Greater focus on methods than content of ontologies.......2006-01-14

I was disappointed in this book in the lack of depth or breadth on a couple of key areas as follows:

Item 1 - It appeared to me that ontologies were not explained in sufficient detail to help "newbies" determine exactly why a specific ontology was created and the specific functions it is designed to support. I'm considering the UMLS to prototype a search engine because it is a compilation of a number of ontologies. However, this provides numerous options for subsetting the UMLS; for those relatively new to these ontologies it is not clear which ontology subsets are the most important (i.e., which play a pivotal or lesser role for my intended use). For example, I can include SNOMED and HL7 subsets, but do they provide redundant concepts for my needs and if so, in which areas? It is not practical for me to learn then all, so I was hoping to obtain this information from this book. Unfortunately I was unable to do so quickly and have to dig more on my own (which was the reason to buy the book.....).

Item 2 - I noticed a couple of areas that may be missing for those more interested in the tools and process of using ontologies. For example, I did not see the Protege and LexGrid tools for visualization, from Stanford and Mayo Clinic respectively, in the index (I had located them in prior web search). In a more general sense, as I've been working with ontologies more and more, I've noticed that platform selection and interoperability seem to be stumbling blocks. This topic was not a major focus in the book.

Due to the breadth and complexity of the platforms and tools needed to effectively use ontologies, and the complexity and size of the ontologies themselves, addressing both of these large subjects in sufficient detail in one book may be very difficult. Perhaps this is the reason that this book did not reach the 5 stars potential. Perhaps it would if it had addressed one or the other, but not both.

Perhaps if the description and title clarified the focus of the book, I would have gotten a better idea of the content before purchasing (and unfortunately, returning).

Keep in mind that I'm relatively new to using ontologies.

          Book Description

Bioinformatics as a discipline has come of age, and there are now numerous databases and tools that are widely used by researchers in the biomedical field. However, successful development of future bioinformatics applications will depend on an appropriately formalised representation of domain knowledge.

This book provides a timely and first-of-its-kind collection of contributed chapters on anatomy ontologies. It is interdisciplinary in its approach, bringing together relevant expertise from computing and biomedical studies, and covering both theoretical and applied aspects, with an emphasis on newer work relevant to the emerging Semantic Web.

          Topics and Features:

          • Provides a comprehensive discussion of the foundations of anatomical ontologies and the state of the art in existing computational tools and applications

          • Considers a number of fundamental modelling principles

          • Includes chapters about research on algorithms to systematically align anatomy ontologies and to mine data in the literature, using anatomy terms

          • Explains recent efforts to develop a common anatomy reference ontology

          • Discusses anatomy in the context of spatio-temporal biomedical atlases

          • Describes systems and tools for linking anatomy ontologies with each other and with other on-line resources, such as the biomedical literature

          • Highlights the challenges of dealing with anatomy-based information on the Semantic Web

Although primarily written for readers who will be involved in developing the next generation of IT applications in the areas of life sciences, biomedical sciences and health care, this unique volume will be of interest to anyone who will further develop anatomy ontologies, who will use them, and who will be involved in the actual development of relevant (semantic) web applications.

            Book Description

Bioinformatics as a discipline arose out of the need to introduce order into the massive data sets produced by the new technologies of molecular biology: large-scale DNA sequencing, measurements of RNA concentrations in multiple gene expression arrays, and new profiling techniques in proteomics. As such, bioinformatics integrates a number of traditional quantitative sciences such as mathematics, statistics, computer science and cybernetics with biological sciences such as genetics, genomics, proteomics and molecular evolution.

In this comprehensive textbook, Polanski and Kimmel present mathematical models in bioinformatics and they describe the biological problems that inspire the computer science tools used to handle the enormous data sets involved. The first part of the book covers the mathematical and computational methods, while the practical applications are presented in the second part. The mathematical presentation is descriptive and avoids unnecessary formalism, and yet remains clear and precise. Emphasis is laid on motivation through biological problems and cross applications. Each of the four chapters in the first part is accompanied by exercises and problems to support an understanding of the techniques presented. Each of the six chapters of the second part is devoted to some specific application domain: sequence alignment, molecular phylogenetics and coalescence theory, genomics, proteomics, RNA, and DNA microarrays. Each chapter concludes with a problems and projects section, to deepen the reader's understanding and to allow for the design of derived methods. Many of the projects involve publicly available software and/or Web-based bioinformatics depositories. Finally, the book closes with a thorough bibliography, reaching from classic research results to very recent findings, providing many pointers for future research.Overall, this volume is ideally suited for a senior undergraduate or graduate course on bioinformatics, with a strong focus on its mathematical and computer science background.
