    Book Description

Critics of globalization claim that economic integration drains political authority from states: devolving authority to newly empowered regions, delegating it to supranational organizations, and transferring it to multinational firms and nongovernmental organizations. Globalization is also attacked for forcing convergence of state institutions and policies and threatening the ability of societies to chart their own democratically determined courses. In Governance in a Global Economy, Miles Kahler and David Lake assemble the contributions of seventeen leading scholars who have systematically investigated how global economic integration produces changes of governance. These authors conclude that globalization has created a new and intricate fabric of governance, but one that fails to match the stark portrait of beleaguered states.

Exploring changes in governance across several policy areas (such as tourism, trade, finance, and fiscal and monetary policy), the authors demonstrate that globalization changes the policy preferences of some actors, increases the bargaining power of others, and opens new institutional options for yet others. By reintroducing agency and choice into our understanding of globalization, this book provides important new insights into the complex and contingent effects of globalization on political authority and governance.

The introduction and the conclusion are by the editors; the contributors are James A. Caporaso, Benjamin J. Cohen, Barry Eichengreen, Zachary Elkins, Geoffrey Garrett, Peter Gourevitch, Virginia Haufler, Michael J. Hiscox, Robert O. Keohane, Lisa L. Martin, Walter Mattli, Kathleen R. McNamara, Joseph S. Nye, Jr., Jonathan Rodden, Ronald Rogowski, Beth A. Simmons, and Peter Van Houten.

    Book Description

Creating, adapting to, and exploiting change is inherently entrepreneurial. To survive and prosper under conditions of change, firms must develop the ldquo;dynamic capabilitiesrdquo; to create, extend, and modify the ways in which they operate. The capacity of an organization to create, extend, or modify its resource base is vital. Since the concept of dynamic capabilities was first introduced, much research has elaborated the initial idea. This important book by Constance Helfat and her team of leading scholars provides a timely focus on in-depth examples of corporate dynamic capabilities. Testing these in the different contexts of alliances, acquisitions, and management, the book gives students and researchers a succinct, up-to-date definition of dynamic capabilities and the strategic management theories around them.

5 out of 5 stars A critical book to read if you want to understand the underpinnings of strategy.......2007-08-31

I may be the only person to write a review for this book, as its price is a little steep for the casual business book reader and this is not a casual business book.

Dynamic Capabilities is an academically based book, a collection of co-coordinated articles about the nature of capabilities in general and the capabilities that change capabilities (aka dynamic capabilities). As an academic book it is very strong with the authors tackling many of the major economic and corporate strategy issues involving why enterprises are designed and work in a particular way. From this perspective it is theory that is well researched, carefully and clearly explained.

Capabilities in general and dynamic capabilities in particular are critical for enterprises in devising and realizing their strategies and performance goals. In this regard, this book is a must read for corporate strategists and corporate development processionals who need to understand how to organize and structure the enterprise for success.

The articles in this book lay down the rational and logic for your leaders should view and organize their resources to achieve their strategies. I will admit that the language and the structure of the chapter/articles are geared more for researchers and students, but taking the time to read, understand and reflect on the implications of these research pieces is well worth the effort.

            Book Description

While theories on `learning organizations' and `knowledge-based companies' have recently emerged, little attention has yet been given either to the underlying structures of these developments, or to the link between these underlying structures and the resources available to manage them. Organizational Learning and Knowledge Technologies in a Dynamic Environment attempts to fill this gap. It thus presents practical and concrete ways for companies to be adaptable and flexible whilst operating effectively and efficiently. Underlying concepts and insights into flexible management and chaotic market behavior are translated into a pragmatic approach to knowledge management within companies, using the latest technology. Corporate knowledge is increasingly proving to be not only an important resource, but possibly unique in its sustainability. Managing knowledge as a resource, as well as managing learning as the process which creates that resource, can only be done using appropriate information technologies. The foundational concepts discussed emerge from such fields as neurobiology, cognitive sciences, physics, and organizational theory. These are applied to management and substantiated with examples. New developments in knowledge management, such as connectionist approaches, are outlined and illustrated with real cases. The author further describes an approach for developing knowledge networks in companies. The annex offers readers with an advanced interest in the matter an epistemological discussion on scientific methods for management research and touches in a broader sense on the measurability of management processes.

                      Book Description

With the conclusion of the Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture in 1994, agriculture has for the first time been integrated into world trade rules and disciplines. WTO Members have made a commitment to continue the reform process initiated during the Uruguay Round by starting new WTO negotiations on agriculture by 2000. This book combines academic analysis with practical expertise to discuss, in an accessible and systematic way, some of the principal aspects of these agricultural negotiations, and aims to make recommendations for viable and successful negotiating positions in the new WTO talks on agricultural trade.

Several expert articles outline the historical and political background of previous negotiations and policy developments in agricultural trade. Others provide an overview of the key issues for the new round of negotiations, including: the Common Agricultural Policy reform in view of the Millennium Round objectives and future enlargement of the European Union; the prospects for negotiations in the areas of market access and export subsidies; and aspects of primary importance for the future of international agricultural trade such as food safety and quality standards, environmental and animal welfare considerations, and issues under dispute in the WTO. The positions of leading actors in the new round of negotiations, including major countries (Japan and the United States), groups of countries (the European Union, the Cairns Group and net food-importing countries) and European farmers are also presented.

This is a timely and topical work which will be of great interest to negotiators, policymakers, advisers, researchers and academics working in international trade, and in particular the area of trade and agriculture.

                        Book Description

This report deals with an area of overlap between two large areas of study: on livelihoods and food security, and on international trade and policy. While it concentrates on one small element of each of these broad areas (and so ignores many questions), it does so for a good reason. This is to avoid the danger that the WTO agricultural negotiations fail to contribute as strongly as they might to the promotion of food security precisely because the two areas of work and study overlap only at the margins.

                        Book Description

A leading sports massage expert publishes his indispensable guide to the human musculo-skeletal system.

Containing only the most relevant information needed to understand how the human body moves and maintains posture, leading sports-massage therapy specialist, Mel Cash, draws on knowledge from several different areas of medical science and presents it in a clear and simple style.

There is no other guide like it on the market — it’s essential for all students of human biology, medicine and physical therapy (orthodox and complementary), and anyone involved at any level in sport, exercise or dance.

The 40 specially commissioned colour illustrations and 25 line drawings provide a full picture of the human musculo-skeletal system, while the text gives clear explanations of the various causes of musculo-skeletal pain and dysfunction.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for use with clients.......2007-05-14

Although this book may lack the detail a serious student of kinesiology might want or need, I believe that level of detail would be difficult to fit into a "pocket" book format by any author. Instead, those students might be best served by a set of Netter's Anatomy flashcards - just pulling the muscle cards from the set would create something similar to a pocket guide with considerable detail.

What this pocket guide IS fantastic for is when you want to show a client which muscle(s) you are targetting. Sure, some clients will be interested and/or knowledgeable enough to want to see more advanced materials, but I have found that for most clients the clarity and simplicity of the muscle pictures and info in this pocket manual are exactly the right amount of info to try to convey.

If you are not just a student but are actually a practitioner working with clients, this pocket atlas can serve as an inexpensive yet effective and handy addition to your client education materials.

As a student of advanced massage therapy, I thought it would be great to have a "pocket" guide to help me remember the names and movements of the muscles. Unfortunately this book is so flimsy and dinky, it might have been moderately helpful to a junior high school science student. The illustrations are pretty good but nowhere near the detail that a serious Kinesiology student would need.
