    Book Description

In this book Dr. Michael Stankosky, founder of the first doctoral program in knowledge management, sets out to provide a rationale and solid research basis for establishing Knowledge Management (KM) as an academic discipline. While it is widely known that Knowledge is the driver of our knowledge economy, Knowledge Management does not yet have the legitimacy that only rigorous academic research can provide. This book lays out the argument for KM as a separate academic discipline, with its own body of knowledge (theoretical constructs), guiding principles, and professional society.

In creating an academic discipline, there has to be a widely accepted theoretical construct, arrived at by undergoing scholarly scientific investigation and accompanying rigor. This construct becomes the basis for an academic curriculum, and proven methodologies for practice. Thus, the chapters in this book bridge theory and practice, providing guiding principles to those embarking on or evaluating the merits of a KM program.

As a methodology itself for undertaking the development of a body of knowledge, a KM Research Map was developed to guide scholars, researchers, and practitioners. This book presents this map, and showcases cutting-edge scholarship already performed in this nascent field by including the dissertation results of eleven KM scholar/practitioners.

*First book to provide cutting-edge research from new scholars in Knowledge Management
*Provides a rationale and research base for establishing knowledge management as an academic discipline
*Research from the first doctoral program in knowledge management in North America, at George Washington University

    Book Description

Throughout the United States and indeed the world, organizations have become places of darkness, where emotional savagery and brutality are now commonplace and where psychological forms of violence--intimidation, degradation, dehumanization--are the norm. Stein succeeds in portraying this dramatically in his evocative, lucid new book, and in doing so he counters official pronouncements that simply because unemployment is low and productivity high, "all is well." Through the use of symbolism and metaphor he gives us access to the interior experience of organizational life today. He employs a form of disciplined subjectivity, based on Freud's concept of counter-transference, and other methods to help us comprehend what such dominating notions as "managed social change" really mean. Downsizing, reengineering, managed care, endless organizational restructuring--all are presented as "just business" but in reality, says Stein, they are devastatingly personal in their effects. With numerous vignettes and anecdotes drawn from his formal and informal research, Dr. Stein shows us in often horrifying detail what work has come to be in so many of these dark places--but also what must happen, and can happen, to lift them into the light. Through consultations, observation, and personal experience, Stein documents the "ordinary" assaults on the human spirit, a form of violence in the workplace that usually escapes common classification. By that he means culturally sanctioned violence, such as everyday forms of intimidation, ridicule, goading, and doubling of workloads--all in an asserted effort to make the workplace more productive, more competitive. His examples, metaphors, symbols, images come from the Holocaust and the Vietnam War, and refer back to other horrors in other times, the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition among them. His book demonstrates precisely how brutal so many of our "rational" business practices have become, and how disposable all of us ultimately are, at all levels, in all organizations. Stein draws upon a variety of research techniques, including a form of counter-transference based on Freud's concept, to understand the inner meanings and feelings contained in workplace metaphors and symbols. An incisive foreword by Dr. David B. Friedman, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine, comments on this, puts the book in perspective and offers additional insights into Stein's themes and how brilliantly he develops them.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive and moving.......2007-01-16

The most impressive (business)book I red last year (2006). Not so much for the rather provocative parallel Stein draws between the Holocaust and the way employees are treated during downsizing. But mostly for the way he is able to give words to his own emotional reactions as result of his "provacative" statement. For instance how he became a second Howard Stein after a nurse-educator said she did not recognize him drawing this parallel. Stein writes: "I "saw" and "heard" echoes of my mother in her, and in the current interaction: how could I be her son, and still think or act that way? In this reverie, I recognized foreignness to myself in myself. [..] I simply let it unfold, and continued to listen and to observe. I wanted to give her (and us) more room. As if out of the air, she began to speak."
Reading this vignette had a fysical effect on me and made me aware that reverie is something you can use as a consultant when emotions are high.

It wouldn't matter whether or not a single strawberry or tomato raised in the pots pictured in this book ever made it to the table--they are beautiful ornamental plantings, worth growing just for their looks. But author and British permaculture expert Michael Guerra promises fresh-tasting, pesticide-free produce, and the chance to grow a luscious array of fruits and vegetables not available at the supermarket, all in small raised beds, pots, or window boxes. Whether you garden on the balcony of a condominium, the deck of a houseboat, or just choose to pack your garden with ornamentals rather than edibles, this book brings hope that you can easily harvest homegrown food, including herbs and edible flowers.

"Gardening is like learning to cook," writes Guerra. "Start with the basics and with practice your menu will increase." He starts out with clear instructions about the basics of raised bed construction, soil enrichment, and maintenance of edibles. The most useful and unique parts of the book are the chapters entitled "What Shall I Grow?" that suggest the best varieties of salad greens, berries, peas, and peppers, as well as a great many more, for smaller gardens. Enlivened by color photographs and featuring detailed lists to aid in plant choices, this is a fine introduction to urban food gardening on even the smallest property. --Valerie Easton

3 out of 5 stars Everything but the plants.......2007-07-23

"The Edible Container Garden" is a fine book if you have a little mechanical/design savoir faire. It illustrates several ways of constructing raised beds and other garden structures, and contains an especially helpful diagram of the author's own garden in his London rowhouse. The book also contains detailed discussions of composting and lists of plants appropriate for container gardening.

However, it has less detail on specific plants and basic gardening skills like pruning and fertilizing. And the construction sections assume a certain level of knowledge that many readers may lack.

It's a good idea book, but should be supplemented with another that gives more detailed instruction on the business of actually growing plants.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2007-03-25

I was amazed when I got this book and read it. It was just full of so much informationa dn beautiful pictures. I am new to gardening so I found it to be extremly helpful fo me in that area. This is a keeper! I highly recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough practical information.......2004-04-29

As a beginning gardener, I was looking for a book that would spell out, in a simple, organized fashion, exactly what I needed to do to start a vegetable garden on my rooftop patio. So, I went on Amazon and purchased this book, as well as "McGee & Stuckey's Bountiful Container: A Container Garden of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers". Having read both, I would strongly recommend "Bountiful Container" over "Edible Container". "Edible Container" may seem more appealing because it is full of color photographs, but "Bountiful Container" is far more practical and a true reference book. "Edible Container" is largely anecdotal and may inspire you, but is frustrating if you're looking to have basic questions answered such as "what dirt should I use", "how often should I water", "what varieties should I plant and when", "should I use fertilizer", etc. "Bountiful Container" is so well-organized and clearly and concisely written that you can literally read it cover to cover (I did) and then you will find yourself coming back to it time and time again as your garden begins to grow. Swearing by the "Bountiful Container", I now how a flourishing garden full of lettuce, beans, squash, tomatoes, and strawberries.

4 out of 5 stars Great for folks with limited space.......2003-07-16

Wonderful insight, information, and photographs to help a beginning gardener with limited space start to paint her thumb green. Recycling suggestions and the use of the principles of perm culture principles in are included for those environmentally-concerned growers, and who among us isn't? At the end of this book are photos of the author's own urban lot, every inch burgeoning with plants to eat and those just for the sake of beauty.
This book deals more with space and soil, however, rather than the actual plants themselves. But for what it offers, it's great.

4 out of 5 stars Planting in tight places............2003-04-13

Michael Guerra's EDIBLE CONTAINER GARDEN - "Growing Fresh Food in Small Spaces" is filled with unique insights and original photographs. Although I don't own a spread exactly like the gorgeous places shown on several pages in this book, I am moving in that direction, so the composition of the beautiful and practical gardens of others is of interest to me. Each garden depicted in this book can be decomposed into elements that can be transported to almost any location and arranged in almost any way.

A fact of life in an urban area is compacted soil. The typical urban homesteader is unlikely to own a rototiller that can be used to plow the yard and create a friendly habitat for a few fennel plants (although these tools are becoming smaller every day). Guerra's photographs and text describe projects that finesse hard surfaces. I especially like the partitioned timber container filled with many herbs standing above a graveled path. He also shows a raised bed with a most interesting set of joined corners using eyelet screws. The hardest surface of all to "farm" is a rooftop, but several photos show just what can be done with containers on top of a building. The corn and beans growing at the edge of one roof with a street full of cars below make me wonder how any insects could ever find and destroy this produce.

Guerra suggests gardeners can recycle materials and employ permaculture principles in urban settings. One permaculture trick involves stacking and arranging plants in a canopied effect. Guerra includes a number of photos showing various structures one might build to grow plants vertically thereby maximizing the use of space while conserving water. At the back of his book he includes photos of his own urban lot where he uses every square inch above and below to grow food-bearing as well as flowering plants.

Guerra's book is a great place to start if you've been thinking about creating your own little Victory Garden and wondered what might be possible. You will need more information than this book provides, since he does not include much about plants so check out KITCHEN GARDENS IN CONTAINERS by Antony Atha.

                      Book Description

This atlas’s distinctive, full-color, schematic illustrations have earned lasting renown for superb explanation of basic histology concepts. This edition includes 120 newly improved illustrations; an additional nine micrographs; and a new chapter on cell biology. The atlas presents its hallmark magnification of the minutia of organ and tissue structures to show the functions of microscopic structures and how functions work. Part One explains tissues and their relationship to their systems; Part Two addresses organs in a similar way.

A brand-new electronic supplement now allows students to practice identifying structures in micrographs using a "labels on/labels off" toggle, "hotspots" (a mark on an image indicating the presence of a hidden label, ideal for self testing), and a self-test for productive learning. An instructor's version of the image bank is also available, which includes an additional 600 images not found in the book.

The book is an excellent source of information and my friends and I loved using it with our class projects.

4 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons..........2006-07-30

I used this book for medical school histology in combination with the Junqueira textbook. I liked this atlas because it is predominantly drawings and so you get to see the "ideal" appearance of things. There are lots of labels on the drawings pointing out the different features of what is being illustrated...this is very helpful and other atlases and textbooks I saw did not do as good a job with this. There is some text as well which is mildly helpful.

Other people in my medical school class used the wheater book, gartner, or strete and seemed happy. There were a few instances where I would have preferred to see a photograph instead of a drawing, but overall I was very happy with this book and would use it again. This book was particularly helpful in the "lab" portion of histology when identifying cells and tissue structures on slides.

This book helped me a lot to put the whole picture togather. I even refer back to this book when reviewing for pathology.

The book title says it all...Histology pictures with functional correlations. All the body organ system presented with very good slide view pictures, which are all labeled + text explaining the labels and functional aspects of all the labels. This book helped me connect all the body organs.

I highly recommend this book for basic science histology class. Start your medical career right w/ choosing the right books and this is one of them.

                      4 out of 5 stars HELPFUL.......2006-03-22

This text was helpful in learning the histology of each section. I would highly recommend it to anybody who wanted some extra help.

Hello, Im a Med student and became a Histology lover during my course. I own several Histo books and I have to say that I have read them all. So I have used this Atlas to "supplement" my Ross and my Wheater's and my 2-3 others, just for fun.
Regarding to this Atlas, and this is JUST an Atlas, I have to say that in my humble opinion it doesn't worth the buy if you intend to reach a somewhat decent level in this course. I dont want to discourage anyone from buying it, after all I have also bought it, but not everyone is willing to spend money on UNNEEDED books. I have seen a lot of people using it, and may be it did saved some "lives" but there are lots of better Histo books out there guys. The picture quality is moderate, the text is too much simplified (and I am not a native English speaker!)If you want a concise book my pick would be Wheater's, and if you want a thorough one, I would choose the Ross. For an Atlas I would go for the "Color Atlas of Histology" by Gartner. And generally speaking, if you go JUST for Ross, you will not need any other book.
I give this book a generous mark of three stars and add one if I heart someones feelings and hope that it was helpfull.
