Book Description
This paperback text emphasizes the financial concepts and tools essential for understanding the financial impacts of business decisions. The author uses current examples of actual business situations to demonstrate how financial tools, concepts, and theories can be used by managers to improve decision-making and enhance business performance. The text has a global emphasis with an equal number of domestic and international examples. The author includes a discussion of international financial statements and the financial impacts of changes in foreign exchange rates. The book's major appeal is its direct, concise, and no-nonsense approach to understanding both the basics of finance and current financial concepts, which allows even non-financial managers to understand financial analysis.

Corporate Finance for Dummies with an MBA.......2000-07-26
This book optimally combines coverage off all of the key fundamental corporate finance concepts with a brevity that makes it a corporate finance book used for something other than jacking up the '68 Beetle out in the garage.
Unlike my pc, the nice part about corporate finance is that most of the material never gets outdated. I used the second edition in business school in 1989 and I still find it very relevant. If you want concise coverage of key fundamental corporate finance concepts in under 200 pages - this is your book.
Book Description
Corporate Financial Analysis provides the necessary tools to improve decision-making with practical, current examples of financial analysis in business situation. It focuses on today's global business environment to allow planning for the future.
Book Description
The quality of an organization's top leaders is a critical influence on its overall effectiveness and continuing adaptability. Yet, little current research examines leadership within the context of organizational structure, such as how leaders influence organizational performance in those key moments when an executive's action is critical to driving the organization forward. This book represents a significant contribution to the literature of leadership, combining a contextual approach to organizational leadership with an in-depth treatment of the cognitive, social, and affective dynamics underlying that leadership. The Nature of Organizational Leadership, using an interdisciplinary approach that draws from the work of scholars in both management and psychology, provides a much-need organizational perspective on the problems to confronted by top executive leaders and the requisite behaviors, attributes, and outcomes necessary to lead organizations effectively.

THOUGHFULLY PROBING THE NATURE AND DYNAMCIS OF LEADERSHIP........2001-07-24
This book on leadership, well grounded in research, distinguishes itself by seeking to move the study of leadership forward through integrating literature from the strategic management area and psychological literature.
The book's key theme is that understanding leadership requires fathoming the contextual dynamics underlying and driving it. These dynamics give rise to critical periods when organizational effectiveness demands leadership-specific leadership moments.
The chapters explore seven leadership performance imperatives: (1) cognitive (information processing and problem-solving); (2) social (interpersonal skills, roles); (3) personal (e.g., career and image management); (4) political (cultivating and using of power); (5) technological (use and impact of technology); (6) financial; and (7) senior staffing (recruiting, assessing, developing people).
Each essay represents insightful thinking. The chapter on behavioral complexity and social intelligence, for example, concludes that there are the four key qualities of executive leadership work: co-option of stakeholders, foresight, systems thinking, and the creation of structure. This is just a snippet, but, hopefully, gives you some sense of the book's richness. This is a first-rate book on leadership! Stern's Management Review Online highly recommends it. We believe that this collection of essays provides a significant contribution to understanding the nature and dynamics of leadership. Its overall quality, organization, and, most importantly, wealth of thoughtful content make this book a top-notch addition to any business library.

Book Description
What will it mean to have a steady stream of animal and microbial genes entering the gene pools of plants in wild ecosystems?
Private companies and the federal government are pouring significant resources into biotechnology, and the major application of genetic engineering to agriculture is transgenic crops. This carefully reasoned science and policy assessment shows that the commercialization and release of transgenic crops on millions of acres of farmland can pose serious -- and costly -- environmental risks. The authors propose a practical, feasible method of conducting precommercialization evaluations that will balance the needs of ecological safety with those of agriculture and business, and that will assist governments seeking to identify and protect against two of the most significant risks.
Rissler and Mellon first define transgenic plants and review research currently under way in the field of crop biotechnology. They then identify and categorize the environmental risks presented by commercial uses of transgenic crops. These include the potential of transgenic crops to become weeds or to produce weeds with transgene properties such as herbicide resistance that may require costly control programs. Plants engineered to contain virus particles may facilitate the creation of new viruses that can affect economically important crops.
Looking at global seed trade, the authors discuss the relationship between commercial approval in the United States and environmental risks abroad. Of particular concern is the flow of novel genes into the centers of crop biodiversity, primarily in the developing world, that could threaten the genetic base of the world's future food supply.
The authors conclude by reviewing the current status of U.S. regulations governing transgenic crops. They discuss the difficulties that this new terrain presents to regulators, and offer recommendations concerning the commercial development, risk assessment, and regulation of these crops.

Microbiology Mystified.......2007-07-15
What a waste of paper. Nothing useful in here at all. This is more for a third grader than an adult taking a college course. Find a better book or you will be sorrowfully disappointed.
good idea...but a lot of errors..........2006-03-18
The idea of a quick review is good...but the authors have to look for some errors, like the scientific names...and others.
But the content is not bad...
For a first contact in the field i think it is ok...
Why can't they write textbooks like this.......2005-07-26
This book got me through microbiology with a B+. Any easy read. Tech jargon is defined and explained in every day English. Much better than the textbook they required us to buy and for a fraction of its price. Can't go wrong buying this.
Got me through my microbiology course.......2005-07-13
Let's say that I'll never be a microbiologist, but I needed to get through microbiology to stay in nursing school. Microbiology Demystified is getting me through my microbiology course. I take it to class so I can lookup anything I don't understand. This book is right on target so far. I've been pulling a B+. Now if they only had a demystified book for my other nursing courses I would be home free.
Buy this instead of the micro textbooks.......2005-07-13
This was a great find. I was talking a microbiology course this summer as part of my RN program, but the teacher was confusing and the textbook was too technical. I took a chance and got a hold of a copy of this book. They should have used this as the textbook. Everything is written clearly, perfectly at the level I needed. I have a friend who is taking micro in the fall and she is going to use this book instead of buying the text.

Good to Great.......2006-08-02
All of these De-Mystified books are good. They offer lots of easy illustrations and guidelines. But they move REALLY quickly. So use them as a refesher or an extra-aid to a college course.
Anatomy for dummies.......2005-09-21
This book would be a good introduction for high schoolers thinking about studying anatomy, but not appropriate for university level study. The pictures are very low resolution hand drawn pictures mostly, the talking skeleton interface gives the book a very immature feel, but between the patronising 'this is fun and easy' approach it does covers real anatomy topics. Don't buy if you allready have a decent text such as Marieb - Human anatomy and physiology or Gray's anatomy. Is Dr. Layman the authors real name?? Oh the irony
excellent book from a real teacher!.......2004-12-26
as a physician i highly appreciate the way basic priciples are explained.
i am still learning a lot!
the quiz -part i consider a waste of paper.
all in all highly recommended.
some drawings are not clear, certainly not for some body who never studied anatomy, but this could be made up by looking in other pictural anatomy books [second hand]

A study guide for future bioengineers.......2006-10-16
This book is a study guide that presents examination quizzes at the end of each chapter and a large final exam at the end of the volume. The materials concentrate mostly on the DNA mechanics, monoclonal antibodies, and limited insight into issues of proteomics. Some examples of industrial and medical applications of biotechnology are discussed as well.
Probably the best sections of the book are dedicated to the subjects of stem cells. In particular, the current state of embryonic stem cell research is described very well, including methodological and sociological implications.
Contrary to the subject, this book does not demystify biotechnology, but it gives some insight into what scientists are working on to make this rapidly changing field of science less mysterious.

Great Introductory Foundation to Biology.......2007-02-03
Being an Electrical Engineering major, I was not required to take a Biology course in College. So my last real brush with this topic was high school Biology probably 20 years ago. I must say that for me it has been the perfect into/refresher Biology book. The chapters are well organized and the quizes are pretty good.
Don't expect to be a Biology expert when you complete the book but you will definitely have a much better foundation for discussing, understanding, and investigating related topics such as evolution, genetics, environmentalism, etc.
I highly recommend this book!
A Great Book! .......2006-02-16
I am an ESOL teacher and I have to be able to assist students with many different courses, Kindergarten - 12th grade. I used this book and plan to use others in the series to bone up on some subjects that I haven't taken for years. Biology Demystified was very helpful to me and the concept of biological order and disorder helped me understand a lot more about Biology.
Learning biology in a few weeks has never been easier.......2006-02-11
I purchased this book awhile back and I can honestly say that after extensive review I am extremely satisfied with the knowledge I have gained from this book. I am a premedical student and aspiring doctor and I will be working on my BS in biology soon. This book teaches you the basics and solidifies your understand in common everyday language and even illustrates these hard to grasp concepts for easier understanding. Once you have mastered the first few chapters of this book simply by reading them and taking the end of chapter quizzes, you will have a strong understanding of the principles of biology.
As a matter of fact, when I first got this book I knew very little on biology. I read the first 5 chapters of this book (roughly 100 pages or so) and I aced three college level biology exams based only on the knowledge I obtained from Biology Demystified. This is an excellent study guide and it has really helped me to understand the easier concepts so I can relate them to the harder ones. Rule of thumb: Something is only hard if you don't understand it. Biology Demystified will teach you everything you need to know to get started with biology: Case closed!
very well written and easy to follow.......2004-07-13
Excellent book! I found it to be very easy to follow. The author really has a grasp on the subject matter and presents it so clearly. I would definitely recommend this book for any level of student be it high school or college. This book is far superior to any major text that can be very dry and boring. The author makes learning fun.
The idea of biological order versus disorder.......2004-06-27
This author very successfully carries through the idea that some parts of Biology reflect Biological Order (recognizable patterns), while others reflect the exact opposite - - Biological Disorder (breaking or absence of recognizable patterns). He does this for both the individual living thing (using a giraffe with spots on the one hand, a dead giraffe with out its spots on the other), and for the environment (an intact spider web on the one hand, a broken spider web and dead spider on the other). Quite often, Biological Order means a healthy individual and "fit" environment, while Biological Disorder suggests an unhealthy individual and "unfit" environment. This two-way system of classification helps the reader associate certain key facts with particular types of symbols. This is a valuable and proven educational strategy for increasing the retention of facts and promoting long-lasting memory.
