    Book Description

"Speaking Out" grew from an international peace project addressing issues of war, from personal effects of combat to institutional factors shaping armed conflicts. Drawing on the Sierra Leone civil war, this curriculum bridges local and global, placing gripping personal stories in an international landscape and highlighting creative capacities that survive war. Stories, games and role-playing are interwoven with lessons on colonialism, West African agricultural economy, international banking, diamond and arms trades and peace-building projects. The book includes projects for the classroom and beyond. It provides a method for instruction on war and peace, with options for high school or college use, and will be of interest to scholars in global studies, psychology, sociology, women's studies, communications and conflict resolution.

5 out of 5 stars Speaking Out for Others.......2007-08-09

Jan Haaken has committed her life to educating and helping others with a compassion that few offer in the field. Her research and work has opened a world to those who would not have found a voice. And it has opened a world to those who want to learn more about the world and the people in it. There is no easy look into the lives of women who suffer in Sierra Leone, Africa. Yet it brings each of us closer to understanding what is happening so far removed from our lives. Haaken and the others who worked on the book provide a unique look into the lives of women suffering from war and the effects of the global economy.
While the book is designed for collegiate study, it educates everyone who reads it. The personal testimonies give a poignant account of life that must be addressed. The exercises create an opportunity to think about the affects of a global economy that disregards many in lieu of profits.
Speaking Out is what we each must do after reading this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, excellent!.......2005-09-29

The clear, profound and well documented way of describing the complexities of the African economy makes this book one of the best in international economics.

Mr. Mshomba's contributions transcend the analysis of the sub-Saharan region by clearing the path to undertanding the functioning of the world economy and its impact in developing countries. That's why this book is applicable to unveil the matter in other regions of the world.

It is a must for international organizations, universities and policy makers... real policy makers.

5 out of 5 stars The African economic situation explained.......2000-04-13

Richard Mshomba's "Africa in the Global Economy" presents an excellent analysis of both the situation and causation of economic conditions in Sub-Saharan Africa. The economic policies of African countries in combination with the trade policies of developed countries have both contributed to the lack of real economic growth. My summary of the book would be this - African countries have continued to shoot themselves in the foot while developed countries, like the U.S., have held the gun.

For anyone with any interest in international economics, this is truly a great read.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about sub-Saharan Africa. Read it!.......2000-03-28

Mshomba's "Africa in the Global Economy" is by far the best book I have ever read in international economics.

The author writes clearly and objectively in evaluating sub-Saharan trade policies.

I highly recommend it for those interested in learning more and understanding better sub-Saharan Africa from an economics point of view.

            Book Description

Africa's role in the global economy is evolving as a result of new corporate strategies, changing trade regulations, and innovative ways of overseeing the globalized production and distribution of goods both within Africa and internationally. African participants in the global economy, now faced with demands for higher levels of performance and quality, have generated occasional successes but also many failures. Peter Gibbon and Stefano Ponte describe the central processes that are integrating some African firms into the global economy while at the same time marginalizing others. They show the effects of these processes on African countries, and the farms and firms within them. The authors use an innovative combination of global value chain analysis—which links production, trade, and consumption—and convention theory, an approach to understanding the conduct of business. In doing so, Gibbon and Ponte present a timely overview of the economic challenges that lay ahead in Africa, and point to ways to best address them.

              Book Description

Sub-Saharan Africa is a region devastated by HIV/AIDS. The extent of the epidemic is only now becoming clear, as increasing numbers of people with HIV are becoming ill. In the absence of massively expanded prevention, treatment and care efforts, the AIDS death toll on the continent is set to escalate rapidly. Despite progress being achieved in localized settings, the alarming statistics reflect the continuing failure of advanced countries to mount a response that matches the scale and severity of the African HIV/AIDS crisis.

Over and above the colossal personal suffering, the dire social and economic consequences for fragile nation-states are already being felt, not only in health but in education, industry, agriculture, transport, human resources and economies in general. Countries already crippled by drought, poverty, debt, forced migration and civil war must now contend with massive deterioration in child survival rates and life expectancy, the erosion of the economic family base, massive and insupportable demands on health and public services, chronic labour shortages and volatile national security.

Through a critical and detailed exploration of specific case studies, this invaluable volume brings together an unparalleled array of international contributors to redefine the political and economic contours of this calamitous epidemic. It examines the impact of the shortfalls in the 'Global Fund' allocation, the slow pace of administrative processing of aid and the weaknesses of institutional responses to the crisis from African countries and their partners in the global health community. It is essential reading for all concerned with public health, epidemiology, HIV/AIDS research, globalization, development, Africa and indeed our shared future.

Features include: — Unique assessments of HIV/AIDS and its impact on democracy and governance in African states — Wide-ranging regional and country studies by the foremost thinkers in their fields — Multi-disciplinary contributions from areas including: Politics, Sociology, Public Health and Development Studies — Compelling and convincing evidence, thematic in approach — Innovative and culturally specific insights for long-term planning, care and support

This book examines the relationship between global and local politics in Africa. As well as feeling the impact of globalization, Africa has been increasingly subject to external interventions - political, economic and military. Comprising chapters by area specialists, political scientists and anthropologists, the book analyzes the forms of power, authority and governance which have emerged as international influences have grown. It will be of interest to students of comparative politics, sociology and international relations, as well as African studies.

It features contributions from the top executives and management thinkers of today, including Peter Drucker, Michael Hammer, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, John P. Kotter, Noel Tichy, Paul Allaire of Xerox, and Percy Barnevik of ABB. In two essays written especially for this collection, James Champy and Nitin Nohria reflect on the central truths of all business change, discuss the vital leadership traits of authenticity and credibility, and attack the twin enemies of change-orthodoxy and dogma.

                        Book Description

At first glance, studying behavior is easy, but as every budding ethologist quickly realizes, there are a host of complex practical, methodological and analytical problems to solve before designing and conducting the study. How do you choose which species or which behavior to study? What equipment will you need to observe and record behavior successfully? How do you record data in the dark, in the wet, or without missing part of the action? How do you analyze and interpret the data to yield meaningful information? This new expanded edition of the Handbook of Ethological Methods provides a complete step-by-step introduction to ethological methods from topic choice and behavioral description to data collection and statistical analysis. This book is a must for both beginning students and experienced researchers studying animal behavior in the field or laboratory.

                        5 out of 5 stars Elegant Presentation.......2007-01-30

This is the best introduction to ethology I have found: Desmond Morris is a good introduction for someone with no scientific background and "Foundations" by Konrad Lorenz uses words that may confuse the newcomer. If you are intrested in this amazing field this is a must. It has a good theoretical introduction and follows with a well organized guide into conducting a clean research. I am an Electronics graduate and found the book very accessible yet powerfully presented.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent update of a classic.......2000-09-28

This second edition is an excellent update, it is still the best begin for ethological researchers, and a very useful tool in the behavioral ecology and ethology classes in my university.
