      "Change is good" is the new mantra of organizational culture--but that doesn't mean that change is easy to take, especially if it's your responsibility to initiate and manage it. This snappy 72-page guide to weathering the winds of workplace change equips you with a quick-and-dirty plan for finessing change in three crucial phases: planning change (deciding what to change and what not to change, involving others, making an action plan, anticipating its effects and resistance to it, and testing and checking your plans), implementing change (communicating it, assigning responsibility, developing commitment to it, and limiting resistance), and consolidating change (monitoring progress, maintaining momentum, and building on it for future growth). On every page of this hard-working little handbook, boxed tips, mini case studies, handy to-do checklists, and easy-to-follow and adaptable flow charts demystify the process, and bring it to life. Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you might find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But, if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine.

      It's worth mentioning that the book is part of the "Essential Managers" series by reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley--a series comprising 20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics that range from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the talent of the "For Dummies" book series for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature design style of crisp, classy graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, the books don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking or reflect necessarily any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as if someone had collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics, and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages--studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and, on the last few pages of each volume, a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand. Again, they're not for anyone who's looking for more in-depth or focused help on any of the covered subjects, but they're perfect as a quick general-interest reference; and, let's face it, they're so damn cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that probably you'll want to buy a whole bunch to give as gifts to your entire staff or department. --Timothy Murphy

      Customer Reviews:

      2 out of 5 stars Overview only.......2007-09-04

      Nice book, but you must read other books about decision making to understand what this book is all about.

      4 out of 5 stars What you need to know about managing change.......2005-09-22

      Managing Change is a small book packed with information and ideas about managing change. It is direct and to-the-point. It is about 70 pages long and can fit in a jacket pocket which means that if you are busy implementing change, you can quickly read it (for example while in the metro going to and from work). This is also ideal if you need to implement change management soon or you are already implementing it and you need quick guidance on the way forward. If you are a facilitator or consultant and you need to present a crash course on managing change, you will find this little book very handy.

      The book is divided into four sections namely:

      * Understanding Change
      * Planning Change
      * Implementing Change
      * Consolidating Change

      These areas pretty covers all the main areas one would require when involved in a change process. The book is cheap and I would buy it for everyone involved in the change process, from the top of the organisation hierarchy to the front-line staff.

      The book's main advantage of its compactness is also its main limitation. Not all the information required to become an effective change agent can be accommodated in a 70 or so page book. The book is excellent for a person looking for an entry-level book on the topic of managing change. This book will give you a good base structure from which to work. However, a more advanced student of change management would need to seek other books on the subject. I would recommend this book as a quick read while travelling.

      4 out of 5 stars Practical Techniques.......2005-09-15

      All with practical techniques, Essential Managers series has 'Managing Change' that shows you how to initiate, anticipate and respond positively to change with the change! You can be an efficient and flexible manager to prove your worth with great accessible charts and flow diagrams and gear up for action and provide useful examples. Change is the single most important element of business management today says Rober Heller, the author of this series. With the rising economy level and competitions in the aggressive market, organizations and particularly individuals, have to adopt a positive attitude to bring about a 'Change'. To remain ahead of rivals, set trends and lead change in order to survive. Technical advice is given in this book on how to achieve the best from the staff by using their strengths and involving them at all stages. It has 101 concise tips with vital information and as usually found common in all Essential managers series - a self assessment exercise allows you to evaluate and improve your 'Change Management Skills'.

      The contents are:

      The leaders do need to Change with the Change but now even an individual need to brush up his skills and minimize negatives. All change require changes in behavior which in turn flow from and create changes in attitude. Attitudes effect from job experiences, personnel changes, successes and setbacks and I feel, involvement thoroughly to be realistic and avoid complacency as success carries a hidden risk too. It's the need of the hour to be alert and aware. This book is a gem for any Corporate Office or Managers' office bookshelf. Even individuals who dream big to be leaders should possess and gift their bosses. Great Pick.

        Book Description

        Volcanic eruptions are generally viewed as agents of destruction, yet they provide the parent materials from which some of the most productive soils in the world are formed. The high productivity results from a combination of unique physical, chemical and mineralogical properties. The importance and uniqueness of volcanic ash soils are exemplified by the recent establishment of the Andisol soil order in Soil Taxonomy. This book provides the first comprehensive synthesis of all aspects of volcanic ash soils in a single volume. It contains in-depth coverage of important topics including terminology, morphology, genesis, classification, mineralogy, chemistry, physical properties, productivity and utilization. A wealth of data (37 tables, 81 figures, and Appendix) mainly from the Tohoku University Andisol Data Base is used to illustrate major concepts. Twelve color plates provide a valuable visual-aid and complement the text description of the world-wide distribution for volcanic ash soils.

        This volume will serve as a valuable reference for soil scientists, plant scientists, ecologists and geochemists interested in biogeochemical processes occurring in soils derived form volcanic ejecta.

          Description:
          Column leaching experiments were conducted to test the ability of Chilean volcanic soils in retaining the mineral constituents and metals in sewage sludge and sludge ash that were incorporated into the soils. Small or negligible amounts of the total content of Pb, Fe, Cr, Mn, Cd, and Zn (0 to <2%), and more significant amounts of mineral constituents such as Na (7-9%), Ca (7-13%), PO"4 (4-10%), and SO"4 (39-46%) in the sludge and sludge ash were readily soluble. When they were incorporated on the surface layer of the soils and leached with 12 pore volumes of water over a 3 month period of time, less than 0.1% of the total amount of heavy metals and PO"4 in the sludge and sludge ash were collected in the drainage water. Cation exchange selectivity, specific anion adsorption and solubility are the processes that cause the reduction of leaching. The volcanic soils were capable of retaining the mineral constituents, P, and metals in applied sewage sludge and sludge ash and gradually released them as nutrients for plant growth.

            Description:
            The study was carried out at the experimental station of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences to investigate gas fluxes from a Japanese Andisol under different N fertilizer managements: CD, a deep application (8cm) of the controlled release urea; UD, a deep application (8cm) of the conventional urea; US, a surface application of the conventional urea; and a control, without any N application. NO, N"2O, CH"4 and CO"2 fluxes were measured simultaneously in a winter barley field under the maize/barley rotation. The fluxes of NO and N"2O from the control were very low, and N fertilization increased the emissions of NO and N"2O. NO and N"2O from N fertilization treatments showed different emission patterns: significant NO emissions but low N"2O emissions in the winter season, and low NO emissions but significant N"2O emissions during the short period of barley growth in the spring season. The controlled release of the N fertilizer decreased the total NO emissions, while a deep application increased the total N"2O emissions. Fertilizer-derived NO-N and N"2O-N from the treatments CD, UD and US accounted for 0.20+/-0.07%, 0.71+/-0.15%, 0.62+/-0.04%, and 0.52+/-0.04%, 0.50+/-0.09%, 0.35+/-0.03%, of the applied N, respectively, during the barley season. CH"4 fluxes from the control were negative on most sampling dates, and its net soil uptake was 33+/-7.1mgm^-^2 during the barley season. The application of the N fertilizer decreased the uptake of atmospheric CH"4 and resulted in positive emissions from the soil. CO"2 fluxes were very low in the early period of crop growth while higher emissions were observed in the spring season. The N fertilization generally increased the direct CO"2 emissions from the soil. N"2O, CH"4 and CO"2 fluxes were positively correlated (P <0.01) with each other, whereas NO and CO"2 fluxes were negatively correlated (P <0.05). The N fertilization increased soil-derived global warming potential (GWP) significantly in the barley season. The net GWP was calculated by subtracting the plant-fixed atmospheric CO"2 stored in its aboveground parts from the soil-derived GWP in CO"2 equivalent. The net GWP from the CD, UD, US and the control were all negative at -243+/-30.7, -257+/-28.4, -227+/-6.6 and -143+/-9.7gCm^-^2 in CO"2 equivalent, respectively, in the barley season.

                          Book Description

                          X-ray crystallography has long been a vital method for studying the structure of proteins and other macromolecules. As the importance of proteins continues to grow, in fields from biochemistry and biophysics to pharmaceutical development and biotechnology, many researchers have found that a knowledge of X-ray diffraction is an indispensable tool. In this new edition of his essential work, Dr. Jan Drenth, recognized internationally for his numerous contributions to crystallographic research, has provided an up-to-date and technically rigorous introduction to the subject.

                          Principles of Protein X-ray Crystallography provides the theoretical background necessary to understand how the structure of proteins is determined at atomic resolution. It is intended to serve as an introduction for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and established scientists who want to use protein crystallography in their own endeavors, or need to understand the subject in order to critically evaluate the literature. New additions to the book include a section on twinning, an additional chapter on crystal growth and a discussion of single-wavelength anomalous dispersion (SAD).

                          About the Authors:

                          4 out of 5 stars Depends on who you are and what you want..........2007-09-28

                          Jan Drenth is an old school protein crystallographer who has seen the evolution of the field right from its inception in the 1950s to the present day. He belongs to the era when Protein Crystallography was dominated by people with serious math and physics skills like Maurice Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin, Francis Crick, Max Perutz and John Kendrew. Owing to the lack of good computers in those days, all the calculations had to be done by hand and there was no way you could solve a protein structure if you didn't know what a Fourier Transform was. The situation is very different nowadays where, thanks to computers, even a person who doesn't know how to differentiate a function can solve protein structures.
                          Understandably, owing to the author's experiences and background, this book is an excellent one for people interested in the real math behind protein crystallography. It is much on the lines of the other classic book by Blundell and Johnson, also crystallographers belonging to the same era as Jan Drenth. It is quite full of mathematics and therefore, is not recommended for biologists or chemists with weak math skills. For such people I would recommend other introductory books on the subject written by Gale Rhodes, David Blow and Alex McPherson. A good approach would be to learn the basics from these intoductory books and 'graduate' to Drenth's book later.

                          1 out of 5 stars Not Helpful for a introductory class.......2006-12-07

                          I used this text book for an introductory graduate class in X-ray Crystallograhy. After taking a semester of X-ray Crystallograhy (which is labeled as a Chemistry and Biochemistry course), I can say that the material is mainly based on physics and mathematics. I can't say that this text helped a great deal for my course. The text does not explain relevant points such as Miller indices, symmetry elements, or space groups clearly or in much depth. Instead, it spends too much time explaining concepts mathematically and deriving equations. It also does not contain any relevant practice problems, which are needed to understand Crystallography and practice for exams.

                          X-ray Crystallography is a very dense subject, and is not a course to take on a whim. I would not reccomend taking a course on Crystallography unless you have a really intense interest in pursuing research in that area. If you are interested in this area, do not buy this text even if it is required for your course. Take a look at Crystallography Made Crystal Clear by Gale Rhodes. That book is much clearer, though also lacks sufficient practice problems.

                          3 out of 5 stars Decent text, but better Crystallography books are out there........2002-09-16

                          Drenth is a decent enough book. The figures are ok, nothing great. They mostly just drive home the point made in the text, but are not instructive in and upon themselves. If you are looking to get a basic understanding of X-Ray crystallography and its uses to solve protein structure try the Gale Rhodes book. If you are looking for a more rigorous book try the Michael M. Woolfson book. Drenth tries to be the middle ground between the two. The subject though is too complicated to do it justice like that. Either keep it simple or go in depth.

                          5 out of 5 stars Best introductory text.......2001-04-17

                          Best introductory text for macromolecular xray crystallography. Simple and succinct mathematical explanation of basic concepts. It provides enough background for students to start a research project.

                            Book Description

                            The rational, structure-based approach has become standard in present-day drug design. As a consequence, the availability of high-resolution structures of target proteins is more often than not the basis for an entire drug development program. Protein structures suited for rational drug design are almost exclusively derived from crystallographic studies, and drug developers are relying heavily on the power of this method.

                            Here, researchers from leading pharmaceutical companies present valuable first-hand information, much of it published for the first time. They discuss strategies to derive high-resolution structures for such important target protein classes as kinases or proteases, as well as selected examples of successful protein crystallographic studies. A special section on recent methodological developments, such as for high-throughput crystallography and microcrystallization, is also included.

                            A valuable companion for crystallographers involved in protein structure determination as well as drug developers pursuing the structure-based approach for use in their daily work.
