Customer Reviews:
Nice book that demonstrates why environmental conflicts can turn into violence.......2006-07-23
I bought this book long time ago, just a few weeks after it got published. The first reason I bought it because the title was so "sexy" and more importantly it relates very much to my field of interest.
"Violent Environment" in principle rejects the neo-Malthusian way of looking at environmental conflict. Neo-Malthusian scholars such as Homer-Dixon and Kaplan argue that violence emerges due to scarcity of renewable resource such as forests, lands, water, etc. The scarcity induces marginalization and heightens competition. Explicitly Peluso and Watts, the authors of this book, argue that this way of looking at environmental problems and violent is flawed in many ways. They reject simplistic view and the automatic/linear relationship between scarcity and environemnatl conflict. They argue that there is much more than scarcity that can explain environmental conflict. For them conflict is a phenomenon that can be understood by looking at the interplay between local and extra local factors. Conflict is embedded in the historical context and wider processes that take place at higher level. Environment is an arena upon which stakeholders attach value, contest claims, struggle for legitimacy, etc. Thus, environemntal conflict cannot be reduced to scarcity alone, it must be understood within the web of social, historical and political contexts and the interrelations among them. They propose an alternative apporach, so called "Political Ecology" approach in order to comprehensively understand the complexity of issues involved in environmental violent.
The books present many cases from all over the world. There is a case on violent conflict among the Dayak and the Madureese in West Kalimantan. There is a case on conflict over diamont in Africa and a lot more. The cases enhance our understanding that conflict is not only induced by scarcity. Resource abundance and process of environmental rehabilitation can equally result in conflict.
While I enjoy the book very much, I would have loved to see another subject that seems to be overlooked. I do not see the discussion on how conflict escalates. Out of these cases, I could imagine we could draw some conclusions on the patterns of escalation. Why is it so important to know this? I think for effective conflict management we need to have a good understanding on escalation and factors that induce the escalation. If we know the patterns, we may be able to devise anticipative apporoch and proactive effective strategioes for mangaing those conflicts. Unfortunately, the book does not pay attention to this.
Otherwise, I recommend this book to those interested in the study of conflict and conflict management. Good also for students, lecturers and reserchers.

must have for teachers who struggle with violent play.......2005-05-30
This is a comprehensive book about creating a safe and productive classroom in an otherwise unpredictable world. Edited after the 9/11 attacks, the book opens with a discussion about violence in the media and at home and how young children are affected. From there, she addresses difficult issues that arise in the classroom, such as gunplay, and relates these issues to children's exposure to violence and media. Levin introduces guidelines to promote a healthy mini-society within the classroom which she calls the "Peaceable Classroom." These guidelines are not rigid, but ever evolving to meet the needs of children. She highlights the need for open dialogue between the children and teachers, something that can only be achieved if the children feel safe enough to speak. She does not advocate providing the children with adult-sized solutions to issues that arise in the classroom. Instead, she promotes an open forum between the children and teachers to arrive at the best solution to a problem. In addition, she discusses accepting children's thinking about tough issues while challenging their concepts about violence, sexism, and racism during open dialogue and through Piaget-like activities.
I believe that anyone would benefit from reading this book, but I particularly recommend it to anyone who has trouble dealing with violent pretend play or gunplay in the classroom. Levin demonstrates a realistic approach to dealing with such problems without banning them outright. She has clear examples of conversations and activities meant to encourage a safe community that are easy to follow and adaptable to a variety of situations. She does a wonderful job of shedding light on an issue that is more complex than meets the eye. This would also be a good place to start in creating a classroom community from scratch or when working in a school system where the children may have been exposed to violence in the home or surrounding community.

Book Description
In Violent Legacies the acclaimed photographer Richard Misrach has compiled three new "cantos" in his ongoing series of photographs exploring the desert in the American West.
The desert has long been a metaphor in Misrach's art. In Violent Legacies these barren lands, so often romanticized, undergo an eerie transformation at the hands of man and become an unmistakable reflection of militarism, violence, and environmental destruction. Misrach's political commitment and activism-- filtered through an ironic counterposing of form and content, as well as his exquisite use of color and composition-- have never been as powerfully articulated as in these three new cantos.
In "Project W-47 (The Secret)" Misrach reveals classically inspired vistas of the Utah deadlands, tainted forever by their past incarnation as Wendover Air Base-- the secret training and planning site for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. Aspects of what took place at Wendover still remain classified by the U.S. government.
"The Pit" is a Goyaesque series that focuses on the mysterious death of livestock in very close proximity to a former nuclear test site in the Nevada desert. These photographs are a chilling reminder of U.S. and global nuclear contamination.
"The Playboys" are Misrach's studies of Playboy magazines that were used for target practice by persons unknown on the fringes of the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. While cover girls appear to have been the principal targets, many aspects of American culture-- including icons like Andy Warhol, Ray Charles, and Madonna-- were inadvertently blasted.
Susan Sontag uses these cantos as a springboard to an allegorical tale-- "The View from the Ark"-- a subtle, yet probing meditation on violence in contemporary society. A postscript interview with Richard Misrach provides background information about the sites comprising Violent Legacies.
"The West," says Misrach, "is such a loaded concept that any representation deviating from the cowboy myth automatically becomes confrontational. Today, a more fitting myth is that of Dr. Frankenstein. Since World War II, the American landscape has been converted into a n0 laboratory where scientists and the military experiment with the most elemental powers of the universe, inventing weapons of mass destruction, and leaving a legacy of violence in their wake."
Violent Legacies sends a stark and compelling message about the land we inhabit and our embattled relationship to it. Though the sites depicted here are all in the American West, they symbolize conditions to be found across the globe and in our own backyards. Richard Misrach unveils a landscape of terrible beauty and great metaphorical power. He asks us to confront the violence in human nature, the skeletons in our closet, the radiant glow on the horizon.

Book Description
Organizational culture and climate continues to engage academic interest and debate. Culture has increasingly been linked to a diverse range of individuals and organizational behaviours. However, despite the international interest and importance of the concept, the dominant literature in this field has tended to reflect an Anglo-US model and perspective. There are no significant texts which have attempted to combine and integrate the more traditional with the more emergent perspective. This book will be the first volume to offer authoritative, critical and comprehensive discussion and information on the topic. It will review the current state of the art in terms of the theoretical and methodological issues and problems and it will consider future research directions.
