Good view of the modern situation.......2005-08-28

I think he really means grand parents, not parents. Or, then again, what he is really referring to is perhaps only a dream of what should have been. At any rate, the old story is going to work for a giant company, working your entire life for that same company, married (forever, no divorcing), 2.4 kids, retiring at 65 and kicked the bucket five years later.

Instead, my parents worked for the same company for 30 years, the company got sold, both companies had too many people and my father was out of a job in his late fifties. His company retirement plan was out the window. You had best plan for a life with some ups and downs like this. And Mr. Astre does an excellent job of presenting you with the options that exist in today's world. He talks about all the different kinds of investing, the implications of the IRS being your partner for life, basically he covers the classical approach to financial planning the will work for some people.

I particularly like his twelve 'Prosperity Points." These are things like protecting yourself from Lawsuits, Audit-Proofing your Tax Return. My only complaint would be that it doesn't go quite far enough. He needs a few more points. I'd suggest:

13. Divorce - If you're male, your savings, retirement, etc. get wiped out. If you're female, you don't get anything. Sound stupid, go talk to ten divoced people.

14. You plan to spend your retirement driving around the country in your motor home. Today oil is $67 a barrel. Suppose it goes to $200 and fuel is $10 a gallon, do you still like that motor home?

15. Retirement is fun. Nursing homes for the last few weeks/months/years are not, and they are very expensive.

16. Can you retire? I can't. I started my own business and work 50-60 hours a week, but then take off 3-4 months a year. I haven't touched savings.

I used this book in North American, North African, and South Asian cultures, and found it very useful. Examples from various cultures, case studies, ethical dilemmas, and easy to understand language helped my students understand the OD process. Also, whenever I read about Gary's expereinces in cross-cultural settings, I end up reflecting on my own experiences, which helps me learn a lot. The text of this book also helps me challenge my students' beliefs, stereotypes, assumptions, and cultural values. THANKS!

IMPRESSIVE IN SCOPE AND DEPTH-A FIRST-RATE TEXT........2006-01-23

This book is developed around an Organization Development Process (ODP) Model and is based on the action research model-the organizing approach for doing OD. The ODP model consists of seven phases:
- entry,
- start-up,
- assessment and feedback,
- action planning,
- implementation (intervention),
- evaluation,
- adoption, and
- separation.

The book devotes six chapters to implementation (intervention). These center on the following levels:
- individual,
- team and inter-team,
- process,
- global,
- organizational, and
- community and national.

The organization of material is rigorous and clear. There is a liberal use of figures and tables. The writing is highly accessible. Emphasis is placed on practical applications.

The book includes a glossary and references. This book is impressive in scope and depth, and reflects the distinguished background of McLean.

From the Introduction With regard to nitrate and nitrite, the perceived hazards are to the ecological balance in rivers and lakes, and to human health. Increased nitrate levels in river water lead to increased growth of algae and consequent decrease in the level of biologically available oxygen (BAO). In extreme forms, the algae form unsightly blooms on the water surface, and the BAO level falls below that necessary to support fish and other animal life. At this extreme, there is little dispute that efforts should be made to restore the ecological balance, and this is best achieved by reversing the increase in nitrate concentration that caused the problem. The health hazards are less clear, but include the risk of methaemoglobinaemia in young infants and the possible risk of gastric cancer, particularly in certain high-risk patient groups. These health risks have led to legislation to control the exposure of humans to nitrate from drinking water and as a food additive . . . What can be done about this and how can the problem be solved (if, indeed, there is a problem)? It is normal practice to add nitrate and nitrite to food as a cosmetic and as a preservative. Is this necessary? If so, how much do we need to add? Are there alternatives? What effect does added nitrate have on total nitrate exposure of humans? . . . In this book, we have attempted to answer, or at least to give the background to, some of the questions. . . .

I used this book extensively for a college report on the bottled water industry and found out there is a lot more to water than I thought. I use to take it for granted but now I really think about water and what makes it so unique. The author did a good job of researching and writes on some really exotic brands. It would be fun to have tasted all the waters.

Dr. Goldstein is a lucid and intelligent woman, who is genuinely interested in conveying her knowledge to her readers, in text, and students, in person. Both the book and its author have been celebrated for the contribution "Demanding Clean Food and Water" has made to the pursuit of human rights. If you are seeking understanding as well as information, I highly recommend you read her work.
