5 out of 5 stars We're A Better Company Because Of This Book.......2000-05-19

I own my own business and was encouraged by one of our bankers to read Barton's book. The work is easy to read, well organized and pretty amazingly accurate. In my nine years of running a fairly large company, I've dealt with irate customers, earthquakes, contractors who filed for bankruptcy (mid project!), two serious cases of workplace violence, and assorted other not-so-mild incidents. This book spells out not only what could happen to your company, but what i REALLY loved was reading how other owners and CEO's got their companies out of trouble...and sometimes, how their mistakes made them considerably worse. Barton uses humor, fact, and practical insight to drive home the case for preparedness. I wish there were more photos in the book- those would have made the reading more enjoyable. Yet the case studies and interviews spice the work up very well, and this may be one of the single best books on management I've ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Crisis In Organizations II: Home Run.......2000-04-16

When I saw the author on The Today Show a decade ago, I rushed to buy his book, and I've referred to it dozens of times each year at my job in Los Angeles, CA. To my delight, Dr. Barton has completely updated this book, and it's a joy to read. He examines why corporations in various industries face serious crises more than others, and then supports his arguments with credible, well written analysis. I learned much from the lessons of Coca-Cola's recall last year in Europe; even great brands can misjudge public opinion- and lose hundreds of millions of dollars as a result. I would say the best features of Barton's book are those that reflect on "best practices" in leading companies worldwide. And his new chapters on workplace violence, natural disasters and how to write a crisis management and communication plan all easy to apply, whether you work in public relations, security, human resources or in any position where you supervise people. Since Barton's first edition, he served as Vice President of Communication for Motorola, and I must say that his experience there boosts the practical value of this edition immensely. It's less theory this time, and more "here's the way it is" in writing: I valued his candor about managing downsizing, environmental spills and other serious incidents in the workplace. Barton's bibliography is thinner this time, as he has placed those resources on his web site. But that's a small point. Overall, this remains the single best book on crisis management I've read in a 30 year career spanning the industry. It's a must-read if you are interested in why companies get into serious trouble with the media, stockholders, employees and the public. His book is simply an outstanding read.

            Book Description

Labor’s War at Home examines a critical period in American political and labour history, beginning with the outbreak of war in Europe in 1939 through the wave of major industrial strikes that followed the war and accompanied the reconversion to a peacetime economy. Professor Lichtenstein is concerned both with the internal organizations and social dynamics of the labor movement (especially the Congress of Industrial Organizations), and with the relationship between the CIO, as well as other bodies of organized labor, and the Roosevelt administration. He argues that tensions within the labor movement and within the ranks of American business profoundly affected government policy during the war and the nature of organized labor’s political arrangements worked out during the war established the foundations of social stability and labor politics that came to characterize the postwar world.

Two classic papers, first published in English in 1955 and required reading for training Jungian analysts. Emma Jung, besides being the wife of C.G. Jung, was also an analyst with a major influence in the school of Jung. There is wisdom in her words, simplicity in her style, and we feel the movement of animus and anima from bare concepts to archetypal figures of force in the soul of everyone.

5 out of 5 stars An important work.......2002-03-02

Written by the wife of psychologist C.G. Jung, who first proposed the terms Anima and Animus in the psychological context presented here, this book by Emma Jung provides a fuller and more balanced description of these two functions of the psyche than exists in her husband's collected works. C.G. Jung, who also coined the terms Extravert and Introvert, developed the idea of the Anima and Animus from his analytical practice and from examining his own psychology. Jung recognised that there is an inferior feminine orientation in the male psyche which he named the Anima, from the Latin word for spirit, and an inferior masculine orientation in the female psyche which he called the Animus. From Jung's observations during the analysis of his patients, he recognised the Anima and Animus to be unconscious elements of the psyche which needed to be developed, or made conscious, by the individual in order for the individual to maintain a healthy, balanced outlook in personal relationships and on the world at large. The Anima in a man, Jung maintained, is a mostly personal image of Woman within his psyche which each man carries with him through life. This image, or inner psychic reality, is a composition of a man's experiences of feminity from childhood on, which is combined also with ancestral and archaic collective impressions of feminity. Jung maintained that it was the Anima which was responsible for a man becoming attracted to women, but only certain women, those who are close in character to this inner experience of femininity in the man's psyche. In women, the Animus plays a similar role of defining the masculine side of a woman's personality. Emma Jung's major contribution with her book is her expansion on the concept of the Animus. C.G. Jung wrote much less about the Animus than about the Anima and Emma Jung's further development of the Animus concept in this book provides for a balanced comparison of the two concepts which were simply not available in such depth and detail before. Certainly no mere restating of what C.G. Jung already said, this book further develops the frame of reference established by Jung. It has maintained its status as a landmark work in this difficult yet relevant and very human field of psychological investigation.

....with all the stereotypical interpretations intact. Recommended only as an intro to the Jungian anima/animus ideas, but fully sharing Jung's own equation of femininity with yin, receptive, emotional, irrational and masculinity with yang, active, intellectual, rational.

Written by Marie-Louise von Franz (a colleague of Jung who worked closely with him for nearly thirty years), and capably edited by Daryl Sharp for contemporary readers, Animus And Anima In Fairy Tales is a classic Jungian analysis of the contrasexual complexes (animus and anima) as found in fairy tales, and what these say about the human mindset and human behavior. A profound, philosophical, college-level dissection of deep-seated motivational concepts in a powerful form of literature, Animus And Anima In Fairy Tales is a welcome and recommended addition to Jungian Psychology Studies reading list or reference collection.

4 out of 5 stars Spectrum of views of Jung's anima/animus.......2006-06-12

These 12 essays + 6 book reviews interpret Jung's anima/animus (a/a). Several have valuable multi-generational or courageously self-revealing case studies, & speak to psychodrama, movies, literature, poetry, & group dynamics. The 18 authors present a wide spectrum--classical to post Jungian (Zinkin compares 6 views)--with a distinct dichotomy: from maintaining contra-sexual distinctiveness (men have anima & women have animus) to claiming everyone has both. Some address a/a as archetype; some as complex--very few address both, though Jung implies this. The book as an entity has balance, but few essays are balanced/impartial/scientific vs. value judgments. Some stress a/a genderless aspects (bridge to Self); to others, this is Jung's inconsistency. I think Jung says successful individuation progresses the a/a from gendered to genderless like Kabbalah polarities disappearing in the top sefiroth Keter & the ultimate/Ein Sof, Tibetan male/female deities/yidams in the Dzogchen/Mahamudra Ground of Being/Nature of Mind, & Hindu trinity into genderless Brahman. Tresan relates anima to Kabbalist Shekinah & Buddhist Middle Way/Path. Strangely, Nathan Katz (author of "Dakini & Anima" in Meckel & Moore's "Self & Liberation: The Jung--Buddhist Dialogue" & "Buddhist and Western Psychology") is not represented in this book. Unfortunately, neither is Robert Moore--male archetype expert.

Those espousing a unisex anime vs. a/a support Hillman's book "Anima" with unconvincing nurture vs. nature/politically correct arguments & unscientific assumptions of Jung's gender bias IMHO; Jung had non-random empirical data--mostly mid 20th century Swiss patients--not representative of 21st century U.S. But, the same argument applies today--is contemporary U.S. society representative of humanity in either time or space? This is the same bias as Jung's day. As a scientist, Jung strove for impartiality. Jungian non-scientists' understanding of Jung is skewed, & implies progress is binary/linear--hardly anything is--rather than cyclic/helical/spiral. Some authors do seek impartiality & some argue gender differences are due to nature & nurture--some men have "female" brains & vice versa (biologically shown--but I'd guess it's men with Feeler brains & women with Thinker brains), not to mention powerful hormonal differences

IMHO much stereotypically considered gender just reflect the high correlation (almost 2/3) of men & Thinking vs. women & Feeling. A factor analysis/Analysis of Variance could separate these as well as social/cultural/nurture factors, leaving gender-specific differences. Set theory (Boolean Algebra, Venn Diagrams, Truth Tables) could reveal the relationships among these factors. Similarly, Jung's dichotomies of a/a vs. logos/eros, male/female, & soul/spirit could be separated. I doubt many authors understand Jung's meaning; IMHO they take the prince of symbols too literally--it's impossible for me to believe he meant that only men have souls & only women have spirit. Why not just drop the religious terms & just retain a/a? Zinkin quotes Jung p. 133 "Now the adept is conscious of himself as a man, consequently his masculinity cannot be projected, since this only happens to unconscious contents (CW16: 129-340, para. 421)," precluding men having animus/women having anima. The problem today may lie in analysts' viewing a/a as complex OR as archetype--not BOTH. Stein describes the additional dichotomy between a/a & persona such that children are strongly affected by one-parent families, precluding proper parallel development of persona & a/a: p. 240: "The persona complexes are usually structured in & through the intersection between the subject's personality & the same-sex parent...In parallel, the anima/animus functional complexes are formed & structured typically through the interaction between the subject's personality & the other-sex parent". Also, per General Systems Theory, Jung postulated that appropriately integrating/attuning with one's OPPOSITES enhances/facilitates individuation (growth)--i.e. re-integration of repressed Shadow contents, development of one's inferior function (Thinking, Feeling, iNtuitive, or Sensate), & relating to one's contra-sexual (anima OR animus). It also accords with Meyer's Law: "In all emotional conflicts the thing you find the hardest to do is the thing you should do" (John D. MacDonald "Pale Gray for Guilt" p.83). Finally, per Zinkin, p. 114: "Theories are like buildings: only certain bricks can be removed without the whole edifice collapsing." While I certainly wouldn't sanctify Jung's teachings, I don't think the post-Jungians have created a viable new paradigm.

                            Book Description

For your most intimate and significant relationship with the opposite sex, look within yourself—to anima and animus, the archetypal symbols that define and celebrate the presence of the Feminine in men and the Masculine in women. These compelling figures express inner realities of psyche and spirit with which we all must grapple in putting together the pieces of our individual identities—whether we are married or single, sexually active or celibate, heterosexual or homosexual. They ultimately provide a bridge between the ego and the deepest Self, opening the way to profound self-knowledge and spiritual transformation. The authors use their broad backgrounds in psychology, theology, philosophy, and the arts to follow the archetypes from clinical practice into a fascinating range of cultural manifestations, particularly in the world's great literature—from Dante to Pasternak—making this book the most wide-ranging study to date of these central concepts in Jungian psychology.

The Ulanovs have created a remarkable exploration of the human psyche in regards to our sexual identities and relations. With numerous examples from literature and history, as well as case studies from their own practices, these two Jungian analysts draw vivid pictures of the damage and healing available to us through our "contrasexual" identity. The writing is dense to be sure, but readable, and the human truths expressed are understandable and familiar. Don't look for any simple, step by step answers here, though. The Ulanovs acknowledge the deep complexities of the human soul and the ultimate mysteries as well.
