      Book Description

No authority can distill the world of economics better than The Economist. This new edition of Dictionary of Economics has been extensively revised to include the latest trends and thinking in a field that has grown geometrically in importance since the previous edition was published in 1998. This acclaimed resource now contains more than 1,500 entries covering common and less usual economic terms; the contributions made by noted economists such as Marx, Keynes, and Galbraith; the historical development of the science of economics; and the latest theories, illuminated with examples from international affairs. With its comprehensive cross-referencing, this is an ideal resource for the growing number of people who need some knowledge of economics in their daily work--in teaching, business, finance, or government. Whether one's aim is to follow economic discussion in the press or to make an important business or policy decision, there is no better tool.

5 out of 5 stars a good reference gets even better.......2007-01-11

If you think about economics, you need this Economist/Bloomberg Press publication or one very much like it.

For clarity on all matters of the public record--not just economics--nobody beat the ECONOMIST newspaper, a British 'news magazine' whose largest national readership is now in the USA.

When the style and content gurus at the ECONOMIST get around to publish a dictionary on the terms and nomenclature of the core competence, well, let's just say it's a little bit like watching the World Cup, the Super Bowl, or the World Series (apologies, cricket fans).

It doesn't get any better than this. I think you'd better buy one.

5 out of 5 stars Handy and dense.......2004-04-11

This, the Fourth Edition of The Economist's handy publication, is not a dictionary in the ordinary sense of the term. There is no pronunciation guide and most of the entries are phrases, not single words, e.g., "circular flow of money," "durable goods," "Gibrat's law," "marginal utility," "theory of games," etc. The "definitions" are more like explanations, some of them quite elaborate. Nobel laureate economists are included as well as distinguished economists from the past. Distinguished contemporary economists who have not won the Nobel Prize in economics are not included. Thus Adam Smith makes it; Julian Simon does not, while Herbert Simon, who did win the prize, does.

Bayes' theorem is explained in some detail and such terms as "saddle point" and the "Lagrange multiplier," e.g., merit graphs and equations in their definitions, but other terms like the "Black Scholes formula" for derivatives is mentioned but not explained in detail. Obviously the editors Graham Bannock, Ron Baxter and Evan Davis, have their reasons for their hierarchies of ink expenditure. They call their approach "a micro-encyclopedic treatment with extensive cross referencing." The cross references are indicated with two types of grey arrows, one for "see" and another for "see also." Clearly one of their goals is to be as encyclopedic as reasonable without making the volume too large to fit into a briefcase or to be read in bed.

Although The Economist is British this publication is aimed at the entire English-speaking world, especially the large market in the United States where this book is published by the Bloomberg Press. Most of the entries betray no national bias, although there are some exceptions. For example in the entry for "balanced budget" it is mentioned that the "UK budget is often in deficit." The same could be said about the US budget, but the US budget is not mentioned. For the entry on "balance of payments" a table is presented with both the UK and the US balance of payments for the year 2001.

This book works well for students of economics (and might make a nice gift for someone who is majoring in economics) but why would the general reader want to own such a publication? The answer is that the "dismal science," as economics has been dubbed, is actually an arcane and technical social science, and so an encyclopedic dictionary is most helpful for anyone who follows the financial news. Incidentally the phrase "dismal science" (not an entry in this book!) comes from Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) who was referring to political economists whom he called, "Respectable Professors of the Dismal Science."

Dismal or otherwise, some knowledge of economics is essential for commerce in today's world of business. This book can serve as a reference, or, if you're like me, you can read it as an extension of the Econ 101 course you took in college.

      5 out of 5 stars Buy it.......2000-06-11

Buy it, thats the best advice I can give. This book can help anyone to better understand the field of economics and comprehend economics texts more easily.

                      Book Description

A thorough examination of philosophical and legal issues, Affirmative Action and Principles of Justice systematically explores a vitally important yet complicated and confounding subject. Affirmative action is also an emotionally loaded area of experience and one that is difficult to assess because of the strong sentiments that arise among individuals confronting the issue. The book is divided into five sections: the first defines the principles of justice involved and delineates the issues; the second presents a legislative history of Title VII from early civil rights efforts through Kennedy's proposals on the subject, the Reagan EEOC, and Title VII and the Supreme Court; a third chapter scrutinizes early Title VII employment discrimination case law, defining discrimination and considering goals and quotas; a fourth chapter reviews landmark affirmative action cases and provides an overview of the state of affirmative action case law. The concluding chapter addresses affirmative action, policymaking, and statutory interpretation by surveying the legislative history of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as early Title VII employment discrimination cases, and probing the philosophical basis of affirmative action. A must-read study for legal and legislative historians, students and scholars of the affirmative action process in the United States, policymakers, legislators, and practicing attorneys.

                      5 out of 5 stars Simply Great.......2007-04-17

This book is a must read for any person interested in philosophy or ethics.
I had the pleasure of taking his course and so far it has been my favorite up to date. His writing style will keep you awake and interested, he writes to an average audience, meaning you don't have to be a philosophy scholar to understand. His book covers everything from animal rights, war, sexuality, liberty, drugs, pornography, speech, justice/equality, etc. He applies the views of major classical philosophers-such as Locke, Aristotle, Mill, Kant- as well as new views from modern intellectuals. (Most importantly he provides opposing or contrasting views on every subject). The chapters are conveniently broken down into essays that only require a few minutes to read and understand, you will walk away from each chapter and easily be able to apply the theories.
In real life, this professor is very witty and articulate, having a conversation with him is simply wonderful, having said that I feel that his book gets the best of his personality. I have kept this book and continue to go over and re-read it, amazing every time.

I am again amazed at Dr. Bonevac prose...they are brilliant!! I am sure this text is difficult to understand for some (see previous review), but to those with the ability to think for themselves, this is one of the best books EVER written.

                      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!.......2000-10-15

This book is fantastic!! Unlike my fellow southern counter part, I could actually understand what was written - and I loved it. I am not a philosophy major, but this book is easy to understand and makes the topic come alive. I will read more of Bonevac's titles. This is a great read!! Thank you Dr. Bonevac for enlightening me!!

I would have to say that this author has done a fine job creating this book. I am using this book in a Philosopy course and Bonevac has done a good job getting the main idea's of these famous philosophers across. I would highly recomend this book to anyone who is studying Philosopy or is just interested in learning something new.

It's the only book of its kind I have seen, giving the author's first-hand, no-nonsense accounts of good living by sustainable management of rather small, cheap parcels of land.

The author is a classically trained musician, but for many years has lived primarily from the amazing bounty of his little bit of marginal land in a rural part of Appalachia.

He tells how to find and evaluate country places, how to examine their titles at a courthouse, and how to buy them cheaply.

Then comes a great deal of in-depth guidance on:

                      1. Preparing the land to support you.

                      2. Getting drinkable water from it.

                      3. Raising all types of poultry and livestock on it.

                      4. How to milk a cow and make butter, cheese, ice cream and yogurt.

                      5. Butchering meat and making ham, bacon, and excellent sausages.

                      6. Training draft horses and oxen (even for beginners).

                      7. Managing pastures and meadows, field crops gardens and orchards.

                      8. Harvesting sugar, honey and molasses.

                      9. Preserving food.

                      10. Rustic Construction, Repairs, Blacksmithing.

                      11. Making soap, charcoal, lime, leather, etc.

                      12. Rural sanitation.

                      13. Saving and improving seeds and crops.

...And on and on. And all of it without dependence on debt, drugs, petroleum, chemicals, gimmicks or outside help.

The book is only about 300 pages, but there's so much on every page it takes quite a while to read it all. There are also plenty of helpful illustrations.

This book is a fascinating look into making a very good living, whether or not you have a "respectable" income.

Reading it has set me to seriously pondering chucking it all, and do like the author has done: Namely, achieve a peaceful, leisurely and independent life, while making the planet a better place to live--at least for myself.

                      Book Description

The renowned analyst and author here provides deep insight into the process required to bring feminize wisdom to consciousness in a patriarchal culture—as struggle in which many women are more fully engaged today that ever before. Presenting the personal journeys of three wise women as maps, she points the way to the state of inner wholeness and balance she calls "conscious femininity."

                      5 out of 5 stars wow.......2001-11-20

In middle age, life can seem to drag to a halt. Marion Woodman and her coauthors demonstrate that the richest part of inner work is possible when we no longer are focusing most of our energy on the outer world of our families,or our careers. the stories these women tell of their own dream journeys are almost beyond belief, and inspired me to resume dream work i abandoned years ago. the journey never ends, and Leaving My Father's House begins a whole new ring on the spiral to wholeness. my only complaint is that at times the book felt too wordy.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For Women (& Men).......2001-07-31

If life had a reading list, this book would certainly be on it. Woodman does a supreme job of linking the women's narratives -- clarifying and filling in their experiences in archtypical and Jungian terms -- without dimming the spotlight on their individual experiences.

How long will we live our lives unwhole and blaming others (or even ourselves!) for our unhappiness? Until we all read this book and others like it, I'd guess.

5 out of 5 stars An honest and heartfelt look at woman's path........1998-10-28

With this book, Marion Woodman guides us through a complex and difficult journey. Her work with women through the often painful and lonely process of coming into their own life is shared with wisdom, compassion and deep love. I have found this book to be fundamental to my growth and my process. The women who shared their stories have enriched my life and have helped guide me on my way. I've given this book as a gift to many women friends, and I feel it can be a helpful and useful tool for anyone embarking on the inner journey.
