Book Description
Social learning involves individuals learning from the behavior of others and may lead to spectacular outcomes such as herding, fads, frenzies, crashes, and booms. Providing a synthesis of the theoretical literature of the last ten years, Christophe Chamley demonstrates how these pathologies may occur in a society of rational individuals. His book provides informal as well as technical analyses for readers interested in social behavior, and more advanced researchers in economics, finance, and other social sciences. A key feature is the inclusion of exercises in each chapter, with proofs written out for students.

It's not a bad book, but half the time I am not sure what the author is driving at...

You are better off reading the original papers. Most of the stuff are not new, and has been done better by other authors.
This book will be a bible for every economics PhD student.......2004-02-25
It is a classical! I know some books are the bible in the respective field, like MGW in micro, SLP in macro. This book will the bible for almost every field (especially useful for finance guy). Now I even think it is better than those survey books by O'Hara and Brunnermeier. Since this book provides all technical analysis.

Book Description
This book brings together in one place the work of one of our most respected economic theorists, on a field in which he has played a large part in originating: the New Institutional Economics. Transaction cost economics, which studies the governance of contractual relations, is the branch of the New Institutional Economics with which Oliver Williamson is especially associated. Transaction cost economics takes issue with one of the fundamental building blocks in microeconomics: the theory of the firm. Whereas orthodox economics describes the firm in technological terms, as a production function, transaction cost economics describes the firm in organizational terms, as a governance structure. Alternative feasible forms of organization--firms, markets, hybrids, bureaus--are examined comparatively. The analytical action resides in the details of transactions and the mechanisms of governance. Transaction cost economics has had a pervasive influence on current economic thought about how and why institutions function as they do, and it has become a practical framework for research in organizations by representatives of a variety of disciplines. Through a transaction cost analysis, The Mechanisms of Governance shows how and why simple contracts give way to complex contracts and internal organization as the hazards of contracting build up. That complicates the study of economic organization, but a richer and more relevant theory of organization is the result. Many testable implications and lessons for public policy accrue to this framework. Applications of both kinds are numerous and growing. Written by one of the leading economic theorists of our time, The Mechanisms of Governance is sure to be an important work for years to come. It will be of interest to scholars and students of economics, organization, management, and law.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent on Transaction Cost Economics.......2004-09-23
This is an excellent book on transaction cost economics. Some familiarity with transaction cost economics is assumed. It contains, essentially, a selection set of essays and additional material from Williamson, about whose work I've also written on elsewhere, on my weblog MortazaviBlog. It is a great complement and development over the earlier book of essays from Williamson: The Economic Institutions of Capitalism.
Where Was The Editor?.......2004-01-02
Williamson might be a leading figure in his field, but he can't seem to organize ideas to save his life. It's almost as though he wrote the book in one stream of consciousness, and no one ever went back to check that things flowed, language made sense, etc. One of the most painful books I've ever read.
A boring style.......2002-07-03
Ok...a well recognized teacher from aleading university...strong content...but...but...such a boring book. Really annoying to read. A lot of words made by the author (to sound more scientific?)....hey O. Williamson, next time you writte a book....use a simple style with understandable sentences like the author of "Iraationnal Exuberrance"! Really, there are lots of other books more interesting on the topic...AVOID!!!
A classic of transaction cost economics.......2001-04-25
Oliver Williamson is one of the seminal figures of New Institutional Economics. "The Mechanisms of Governance" is the third book in which Williamson has collected his principal writings, while working them into a coherent whole. The earlier volumes, "Markets and Hierarchies" and "The Economic Institutions of Capitalism," are justly regarded as the foundational texts of the transaction costs economics school of institutional economics. "The Mechanisms of Governance" seems certain to join them as essentials for any legally literate economist or economically literate lawyer.
Transaction cost economics focuses on institutions, in contrast to neoclassical economics' focus on individuals, providing simple models that help us understand how institutions function and how they will respond to regulation. We can analogize transaction costs to friction: they are dead weight losses that reduce efficiency. They make transactions more costly and less likely to occur. Among the most important sources of transaction costs is the limited cognitive power of human decisionmakers. Unlike the Chicago School of law and economics, which posits the traditional concept of rational choice, Williamson asserts that rationality is bounded. Put another way, he assumes that economic actors seek to maximize their expected utility, but also that the limitations of human cognition often result in decisions that fail to maximize utility. Decisionmakers inherently have limited memories, computational skills, and other mental tools, which in turn limit their ability to gather and process information. As he demonstrates, this phenomenon, known as bounded rationality, has pervasive implications for understanding how institutions work.
Accordingly, Williamson's approach provides an analytical framework that is useful not only to economists, but also to lawyers and policymakers. Among other subjects, Williamson tackles such subjects as vertical integration, corporate governance, and industrial organization.
In sum, highly recommended. If so, you might ask, of course, why did I subtract one star? Mainly because of Williamson's unfortunate writing style. Although "The Mechanisms of Governance" is largely free of the recreational mathematics that plagues much modern economic writing, which is useful for those of us who flunked Differential Equations, it is very jargon-intensive. Worse yet, much of the jargon is self-created. All of which makes reading Williamson an effort-intensive project. Usually the cost-benefit analysis nevertheless comes out in his favor, but sometimes one puzzles out the jargon to find a rather obvious point that could have been conveyed far more simply.

Book Description
The concept of social structure is widely recognized as one of the most fundamental ideas in the discipline of sociology. However, in this book the author argues that it still remains one of the most elusive and abused concepts in sociological theory. The author claims that the continued status of the notion of social structure in contemporary sociological theory results from a significant lack of precise theories about social structure. The goal of this book is to achieve a theoretical synthesis in order to form a basis towards a sociological theory of social structure. In doing so, the author draws from three major currents of sociological thought. First, the author identifies principles of social structure from classical sociologists. Second, he revisits and reclaims the useful contributions made in the discourse concerning the issue of structure-agency. Third, he draws from economic and organizational sociology in search of governance structures which, in essence, offer a viable conceptualization of social structure. The book addresses the important question of social structure in the field of general sociological theory.

Description:
Recent accounting and auditing failures have heightened interest in issues of corporate governance. In an effort to restore investor confidence, the SEC required CEOs to file sworn statements verifying the accuracy of the firm's most recent financial statements and compliance with GAAP by August 14, 2002. The value of this confidence-restoring mechanism is contingent on whether shareholders perceived these reports as being credible. In this study, we examine the market reaction to early filing of CEO certifications. We find no reaction to early filing for the market as a whole suggesting that early filing alone was not necessarily a positive event. Further analysis reveals a positive relation between abnormal returns at the time of early filing and several corporate governance related measures, including dividend payments, board size and institutional ownership. Thus, we conclude that the market reaction to early filing was influenced by the existence of pre-existing corporate governance mechanisms.

Description:
This study addresses the question of how to design governance mechanisms so that local suppliers are encouraged to make transaction-specific investments in foreign manufacturing firms. Suppliers' transaction-specific investments can increase the efficiency of production for foreign manufacturing firms operating in a host country. However, it can be difficult to induce suppliers to make specialized investments, because of the numerous hazards associated with such investments. Basing its conclusions on the results of a survey of Taiwanese firms using Chinese suppliers, this study examines the effectiveness of both formal governance mechanisms (i.e., contractual agreements and financial commitments) and relational governance mechanisms (i.e., calculative and benevolent trust) in inducing suppliers to make specialized investments. We find that both formal governance and relational governance mechanisms affect suppliers' tendencies to make specialized investments. Additionally, we find that calculative trust acts as a moderating factor in the relationship between formal governance mechanisms and transaction-specific investments.

Governance mechanisms and relationship productivity in vertical coordination for new product development [An article from: Technovation]

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Technovation, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This article explores the theoretical explanations of governance mechanisms in vertical coordination between firms over the product life cycle stages with reference to the high-technology industry. Firms in the high-tech industry face uncertainties of fast-changing environments such as rapid technological innovations and shortening product life cycles. Drawing on transaction cost analysis in vertical coordination, conditions under which transactional inefficiencies may arise are analyzed on different stages of product life cycle theory. Theoretical analysis suggests that interaction patterns over a product life cycle produce differing implications for achieving cost minimization and value maximization. The implications of this variation in transaction cost inefficiencies suggest that there are different opportunities for enhancing efficiencies or for creating value at different stages of the product life cycle. The article proposes that by considering the impact of exogenous factors on the stage of a product life cycle and relationship productivity, high-tech firms operating in volatile markets can safeguard their exposure to transactional inefficiencies.

Governance mechanisms in Spanish banks. Does ownership matter? [An article from: Journal of Banking and Finance]

This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Banking and Finance, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This paper examines the governance of Spanish banks regarding two main issues. First, does poor economic performance activate governance interventions that favor the removal of executive directors and the merger of non-performing banks? And, second, does the relationship between governance intervention and economic performance vary with the ownership form of the bank? We find a negative relationship between performance and governance intervention for banks, but the results change for each form of ownership and each type of intervention. Internal-control mechanisms work for Independent Commercial banks, but Savings banks show weaker internal mechanisms of control and the only significant relationship between performance and governance intervention that appears is for mergers. The Spanish Savings banks, with a peculiar form of ownership that, in fact, implies a lack of ownership, give voice to several stakeholder groups with no clear allocation of property rights. Nevertheless, their economic performance is not generally affected. Product-market competition compensates for those weaker internal governance mechanisms, and non-performing banks are not fully protected from disappearing.

Book Description
Fields are the basic management units of agricultural production. Traditionally, farming practices such as fertilization, tillage, cropping and pest management are defined uniformly for each field, on the basis of data derived from average samples. However, modern techniques of site-specific yield measurement have shown that yield differences within fields commonly vary by a factor of three or four. The new field of `precision agriculture takes into account this within-field variability to enable the precise targeting of interventions such as crop spraying or fertilizer application only when and where they are needed. Such practices therefore have the dual advantage of maximizing production and minimizing environmental damage, and have been made possible by advances in farming technology, procedures for mapping and interpolating spatial patterns, and geographical information systems for overlaying and interpolating several soil, landscape and crop attributes. This book brings together leading researchers from a range of relevant disciplines to discuss the science behind precision agriculture. Separate chapters deal with sampling techniques, crop growth models, the use of remote sensing data, geographical information systems, precision weed management, and statistical methods for dealing with spatial and temporal data. Bringing together for the first time experts in precision agriculture and specialists in temporal and spatial statistics, this book represents a through, critical and up-to-date review of this important subject.
Customer Reviews:
Agriculture in the space-time age.......2003-10-27
The volume is collection of papers combining experts in modern precision agriculture and experts in spatial-temporal analysis. It is one of the first collections of precision agriculture-related works that account for the all important space-time variation of site-specific yield measurements, within field-variation etc. The advantage of such an analysis is manifold (production maximization, enviro-damage minimization etc.). Highly recommended.

Book Description
This book offers a unique integrated approach to social behavior. Using a "goal directed" approach, the authors organize the book around a "Goal, Person, Situation" framework using a pair of unifying themes: --Social behavior is goal-directed. --Social behavior is a result of interactions between the person and the situation. By using these two simple organizing themes, the book presents the discipline as a coherent framework for understanding human conduct. Compelling mysteries, cutting-edge scholarship, lively writing, and the authors' reputations as both respected researchers and teachers, all come together to make this book an accessible and engaging read. For students of psychology, or anyone interested in learning more about social behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Happy w/ material covered. .......2006-05-06
After reading a few of the reviews I found it extremely interesting that every one of them gave their opinion about what the book should have been. I have a comment, "It has already been written and there's not much that can be done other than publishing a new edition. I feel that since the scope of social psychology is extremely broad, just pinning it down is a challenge. At this point, you might be woundering why I hold such perspective. As a future reasearcher, I feel that people don't realize how much work it takes to put reasearch toghter. If this people that wrote their reviews even got a little taste of what it takes to put toghter all this work, they would realize that their comments are quite insignificant.
Now, as for the content of the book, I feel that it was well written because one can easily read through it, understand it and at times identify with it. It also holds large amounts of reasearch that help build a strong fundation for and non psychology majors.
I can probably give many tips as how to study with this book but I think I would deviate from the purpose and scope of the book and this review.
SO, in conclution, I found the book extremly helpful and would recomment it to anyone that wants to learn about "the fundamentals" about social psychology.
Very detailed but lacking in one key area.......2006-02-23
Surprisingly, this book is enjoyable to read (this coming from a college student). It presents an engaging real-life story at the beginning of each chapter to cause the student to become interested in the content of the chapter that goes after the story. It weaves the stories into each chapter's content and wraps it all up at the end in thought-provoking conclusions. What drives me crazy is its index. This is a sore spot for me because many text books are lacking here. But this book is worse than some. It devotes dozens of pages (at least 35) to its crazily enormous list of references, and has 19 pages devoted to a names index. What student cares about any of this?! (Which makes one wonder who this book is really for..?) Its lonely index sulks in the corner all by itself - all 15 pages of it. I have yet to find a single word I've looked for (out of an attempt so far of perhaps 10).
The book is not searchable online so what is a student supposed to do? There is no glossary. Studying the text is therefore relegated to a linear progression from beginning of chapter to end and on to the next. Trying to correlate my class notes with the text has proven absolutely impossible. Where is any of the words in the phrase "comparison level for alternatives" found? God only knows (and the publishers, darn them.) So how then do I know what material my instructor has taken from the text and what he has given us that's NOT in the text? This is information I need to know!
the doors of cognition !.......2002-10-21
this book opens the doors of cognition ; in fact , when tiing a famous person ( ie : demora , luther king , kenwrinkel ) to notions of social psychology like ( social role , influence , aggression , etc ) , it allows our memory to widen , and teach a method to learn more and more easily !
that is , build couples : idea and picture !
this book uses cognition methods and invite us to study that field !
... opening the doors of cognition ...teaches too , that very simple tools may have terrific and positive effects !
Social Psychology: Unraveling the Mystery.......2002-10-13
The most valuable benefits of adopting this book for my class was the unbelievable support from the publisher. A&B provided a study guide, a test bank, a huge package of transparencies, a powerpoint presentation CD...--all of this for free. I have been astonished by the sevice and free benfits I have gotten as the result of choosing this otherwise excellent book.
Let's hope the competition emulates this author and publisher.
Mr. Cialdini's comments.......1999-09-08
After reading Mr. Cialdini's comments about his book, I wondered: is he trying to employ his "scarcity principle" to influence book sales? ;)
