    Book Description

This book is a revised and expanded edition of a successful graduate and reference text. The material in the book is designed for a standard graduate course on probability theory, including some important applications. This new edition contains a detailed treatment of the core area of probability, and both structural and limit results are presented in full detail. Compared to the first edition, the material and presentation are better highlighted with several (small and large) alterations made to each chapter. Key features of the book include:

    - Indicating the need for abstract theory even in applications and showing the inadequacy of existing results for certain apparently simple real-world problems

    - Attempting to deal with the existence problems for various classes of random families that figure in the main results of the subject

    - Providing a treatment of conditional expectations and of conditional probabilities that is more complete than in other existing textbooks

Since this is a textbook, essentially all proofs are given in complete detail (even at the risk of repetition), and some key results are given multiple proofs when each argument has something to contribute.

    Book Description

Stochastic geometry is a relatively new branch of mathematics. Although its predecessors such as geometric probability date back to the 18th century, the formal concept of a random set was developed in the beginning of the 1970s. Theory of Random Sets presents a state of the art treatment of the modern theory, but it does not neglect to recall and build on the foundations laid by Matheron and others, including the vast advances in stochastic geometry, probability theory, set-valued analysis, and statistical inference of the 1990s. The book is entirely self-contained, systematic and exhaustive, with the full proofs that are necessary to gain insight. It shows the various interdisciplinary relationships of random set theory within other parts of mathematics, and at the same time, fixes terminology and notation that are often varying in the current literature to establish it as a natural part of modern probability theory, and to provide a platform for future development.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Comprehensive Survey of Random Sets.......2007-02-14

This book fills a large gap in random sets, which is perhaps the most underutilized field of mathematics, in terms of comparing its power and it potential in applications. This book is good enough and solid enough to fill this need, and it might therefore allow serious applications to go forward. Just the basics of probability theory and measure theory are needed to understand and work through the book. Very highly recommended.

      Book Description

This book presents a clear, systematic treatment of convergence theorems of set-valued random variables (random sets) and fuzzy set-valued random variables (random fuzzy sets). Topics such as strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems, including new results in connection with the theory of empirical processes are covered. The author's own recent developments on martingale convergence theorems and their applications to data processing are also included. The mathematical foundations along with a clear explanation such as Hölmander's embedding theorem, notions of various convergence of sets and fuzzy sets, Aumann integrals, conditional expectations, selection theorems, measurability and integrability arguments for both set-valued and fuzzy set-valued random variables and newly obtained optimizations techniques based on invariant properties are also given.

        Book Description

In this introduction to probability theory, we deviate from the route usually taken. We do not take the axioms of probability as our starting point, but re-discover these along the way. First, we discuss discrete probability, with only probability mass functions on countable spaces at our disposal. Within this framework, we can already discuss random walk, weak laws of large numbers and a first central limit theorem. After that, we extensively treat continuous probability, in full rigour, using only first year calculus. Then we discuss infinitely many repetitions, including strong laws of large numbers and branching processes. After that, we introduce weak convergence and prove the central limit theorem. Finally we motivate why a further study would require measure theory, this being the perfect motivation to study measure theory. The theory is illustrated with many original and surprising examples.

          Book Description

The contributions in this book connect Probability Theory/Statistics and Fuzzy Set Theory in different ways. Some of these connections are either philosophical or theoretical in nature, but most of them state models and methods to work with fuzzy data (or fuzzy perception) when dealing with random experiments. In this way, several probabilistic studies are developed, as well as techniques and criteria to get descriptive and inferential statistical conclusions from fuzzy data. On the other hand, some studies have been devoted to fuzzy measures and their relationship with measures in Probability Theory.

            Book Description

The study of random sets is a large and rapidly growing area with connections to many areas of mathematics and applications in widely varying disciplines, from economics and decision theory to biostatistics and image analysis. The drawback to such diversity is that the research reports are scattered throughout the literature, with the result that in science and engineering, and even in the statistics community, the topic is not well known and much of the enormous potential of random sets remains untapped. An Introduction to Random Sets provides a friendly but solid initiation into the theory of random sets. It builds the foundation for studying random set data, which, viewed as imprecise or incomplete observations, are ubiquitous in today's technological society. The author, widely known for his best-selling A First Course in Fuzzy Logic text as well as his pioneering work in random sets, explores motivations, such as coarse data analysis and uncertainty analysis in intelligent systems, for studying random sets as stochastic models. Other topics include random closed sets, related uncertainty measures, the Choquet integral, the convergence of capacity functionals, and the statistical framework for set-valued observations. An abundance of examples and exercises reinforce the concepts discussed. Designed as a textbook for a course at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, this book will serve equally well for self-study and as a reference for researchers in fields such as statistics, mathematics, engineering, and computer science.

              Book Description

This monograph studies two classical computational problems: counting the elements of a finite set of combinatorial structures, and generating them at random from some probability distribution. Apart from their intrinsic interest, these problems arise naturally in many branches of mathematics and the natural sciences.

The author aims to classify the computational difficulty of these problems for various naturally occurring structures: the emphasis is on positive results that demonstrate the existence of efficient algorithms. At the heart of the monograph is a single algorithmic paradigm; simulate a Markov chain whose states are combinatorial structures. A major portion of the monograph is devoted to developing new mathematical tools for the analysis of algorithms of this kind. Among the applications presented are the first provably efficient algorithms for several important counting and generation problems. Further applications are summarized in an appendix.

This book will be of interest to researchers and graduate students in theoretical computer science, probability and statistics and theoretical physicists with an interest in Monte Carlo methods. It is a timely contribution to a fast moving field, with the immediacy and freshness of a new discovery.

                  Book Description

Various notions of the Markov property relative to a partial ordering have been proposed by both physicists and mathematicians. For the most part, the analysis has focused on the study of some important, but special, examples. This work develops general techniques for studying Markov fields on partially ordered sets. The authors introduce random transformations of the index set which preserve the Markov property of the field. These transformations yield new classes of Markov fields starting from relatively simple ones. Examples include a model for crack formation and a model for the distribution of fibres in a composite material. Given the burst of popularity of random fields, this self-contained and accessible book will prove useful in the many scientific areas where random field models are appearing.

                      Book Description

Gone are the days when facility management (FM) was regarded as a "back room" operation, a function-centered support system for corporate and institutional needs. Now, modern FM departments and providers are reinventing themselves as full-fledged business entities critical to the realization of corporate goals.

This book is the first to show facility management professionals how to develop, achieve, and sustain organizational effectiveness. In addition to demonstrating the importance of organization development in FM, the book accelerates real-world implementation with a variety of charts, graphs, and case examples, plus entire sections on:

                      * Structuring facility management organizations * Understanding and influencing group behavior * Assessing, motivating, and rewarding FM staff * Preparing FM organizations for challenge and change in the business landscape.

This cutting-edge book is surely a blueprint for the future of facility management.

                        Book Description

Summarizing landmark research, Volume 2 of this essential series furnishes information on the availability of germplasm resources that breeders can exploit for producing high-yielding cereal crop varieties. Written by leading international experts, this volume offers the most comprehensive and up-to-date information on employing genetic resources to increase the yield of those cereal crops that provide the main source of nutrition for two-thirds of the world. In thirteen succinct chapters, Genetic Resources, Chromosome Engineering, and Crop Improvement: Cereals, Volume 2 focuses on wheat, rice, maize, oats, barley, millet, sorghum, and rye, as well as triticale: a wheat and rye hybrid with great potential. An introductory chapter outlines the cytogenetic architecture of cereal crops, describes the principles and strategies of cytogenetics and breeding, and summarizes landmarks in current research. This sets the stage for the ensuing crop-specific chapters. Each chapter generally provides a comprehensive account of the crop, its origin, wild relatives, exploitation of genetic resources in the primary, secondary, and tertiary gene pools through breeding and cytogenetic manipulation, and genetic enrichment using the tools of molecular genetics and biotechnology. Certain to become the standard reference for improving the yields of these critical grains, this book is the definitive source of information for plant breeders, agronomists, cytogeneticists, taxonomists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists, and graduate students and researchers in these fields.

                          Book Description

This book, written by leading grain scientists from Europe and Africa, examines six such grains that have been important food crops in various parts of the world and have the potential for much greater and more widespread use. The chemistry, nutritional value, food processing technologies and potential applications of three true cereals: sorghum, spelt wheat and the major millet species, and three dicotyledonous pseudocereals: grain amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa are discussed. Just three cereal grains account for more than 75% of all grains produced worldwide. This causes high risks for the future of humankind via catastrophic food crop failures and is detrimental to our long-term health. In addition, the intensive cultivation practices needed to produce the required high yields of these cereals is frequently leading to environmental degradation, and they are often inappropriate in the Developing World.

                              Book Description

For the first time in a single volume, noted expert Bernard Godon has assembled a diverse wealth of difficult-to-find and previously unpublished information for those seeking to understand and make profitable innovations in cereal production and processing.

Focusing on current scientific knowldege and techniques on which to base innovations, Bioconversion of Cereal Products explains how to obtain a large number of intermediate agricultural products from grains, which often become the raw materials for many food and non-food industries.

Beginning with the overall composition of cereal grains, Godon goes on to detail different methods of fractionation; the enzymatic processing of carbohydrates and proteins, and microbial processes for the production of food, yeast, alcoholic beverages, alcohol, metabolities and highly diverse organic molecules.

Bioconversion of Cereal Products is a valuable resource and reference for agricultural chemists, food and feed processors, chemical engineers and professors and advanced students of the agriculture and food industry.

                                        Product Description

Genome Mapping and Molecular Breeding in Plants presents the current status of the elucidation and improvement of plant genomes of economic interest. The focus is on genetic and physical mapping, positioning, cloning, monitoring of desirable genes by molecular breeding and the most recent advances in genomics. The series comprises seven volumes: Cereals and Millets; Oilseeds; Pulse, Sugar and Tuber Crops; Fruits and Nuts; Vegetables; Technical Crops; and Forest Trees.

Cereals and millets form the leading group of field crops, providing staple food for most of the earths population. This volume, with contributions by 27 eminent scientists, includes chapters on rice, wheat, maize, barley, oats, rye, sorghum, pearl millet, foxtail millet and finger millet. The emphasis is on advanced research on the major crops, including the model plants maize and rice, as well as on future road maps of genomic research for the less-often considered but equally deserving cereals and millets.

                                          Book Description

This reference text describes the breadmaking process at the molecular level, based on surface and colloidal science and introducing colloidal science with a minimum of theory.;Reviewing the current molecular and colloidal knowledge of the chain from wheat grain to bread, the book: discusses the structure of the dough, how a foam is formed during fermentation and how starch gelatinization induces the formation of an open-pore network, such as the bread crumb; covers new results on the gluten structure in bulk and at interfaces, as well as on phase separation in the dough; presents a complete model of all structural transitions from dough mixing to the formation of a bread; details the physicochemical properties of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates in wheat and other cereals, and considers their modes of interaction; and explores recent progress in the shape of biomolecular assemblies, derived from forces and curvature at interfaces.;The text provides nearly 850 citations from the reference literature.
