Many of us consider ourselves fairly knowledgeable about stock and fund investment options, but then maintain some sort of vague money-in-a-sock vision of the money we deposit in our bank accounts. While the notion that it physically sits in the bank's drawers is obviously ludicrous, determining what actually happens to the money seems impossible in our age of split-second electronic transfers and a complicated global economy. In Money Makes the World Go Round however, Barbara Garson has done just that, tracking a one-time deposit on its dizzying journey around the world.
Using half her publisher's advance for this book, Garson deposits $29,500 in a small, family-owned bank in Millbrook, New York. Putting her intrepid journalistic sensibilities to work, Garson then attempts to follow the money as it's put to use, flowing out of her small bank, through much larger ones, and in and out of the accounts and pockets of companies and their employees in the U.S. and Asia. She tracks down players on all levels of this green path--from a senior vice president on Chase's Federal Funds desk to a seafood importer in Brooklyn, and from the head honcho of a Japanese construction firm building an oil refinery in Thailand to a jellyfish exporter in Malaysia--and tells their stories in vivid, colorful detail. Doing more than just stating that the lives of many are affected by the actions of a few, Garson interviews people at the farthest reaches of her money's journey, like fishermen in a small Malay village, a Burmese pipe fitter working illegally in Thailand, and Filipino maids in Singapore. She explores the consequences of a mutual fund investment in a similar manner, taking one of the fund's investments, Sunbeam, and following "Chainsaw Al" Dunlop's restructuring of the company from the top (shareholders) to the bottom (workers at a furniture plant in Tennessee).
Garson, author of All the Livelong Day and The Electronic Sweatshop, is a lively and engaging writer. She appears to hold little interest in the value of her deposit for herself, but is oozing with curiosity about what money can and can't do for its lenders, borrowers, makers, and users around the world. While she tends to go into excruciating detail in relaying the circuitous routes she takes to get to the right people and the conversations she has with them (even recording the phone conversations they have while she is with them), this very detail serves to remind the reader of the convoluted pathways down which her money travels. An intriguing narrative on a subject we usually only think of in numbers. --S. Ketchum
Book Description
What does it really mean to live in a world united by, and immersed in, the free flow of capital? In Money Makes the World Go Around, Barbara Garson sets out to see for herself, and the result is a hilarious and instructive gallop through international finance in today's post-industrial economy. Depositing two sums of money-one in a small-town bank, the other in an aggressive mutual fund-Garson tracks her money's every stop as it races around the world for loans, speculation, and investments. Along the way, she talks to people who touch, use, or are touched by her money.
Part detective story, part business report, this is a primer on today's dizzying economic dynamic and a surprising account of modern life.
"Ms. Garson recounts her travels with a disarmingly balanced combination of amazement and social concern." (The Wall Street Journal)
"[Garson's] voice is so persistently good-natured and her intelligence so obvious that by the end of this curious capitalist's Baedeker you can't help but trust her gentle judgments." (Business Week)
Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful and easy to read .......2006-01-20
Barbara Garson's look at globalization manages to be thoughtful and breezy at the same time. Garson, a leftwing activist and writer, decided to follow her own money - specifically, her book advance - as it coursed through the global economy from a small-town bank to mighty Chase Manhattan and points beyond. Her odyssey took her to a rowdy shareholder meeting in New York to an oil project in Thailand to small towns in America devastated by corporate "restructurings.'' Although she has a clear political point of view, she is unfailingly open-minded and fair about the people she meets and writes about - with the possible and understandable exception of "Chainsaw" Al Dunlap. Her writing is more nuanced than her just-folks style sometimes suggests. She gently hints at the claustrophobic atmosphere in small town America by describing the demise of a pizzeria that failed to do business with the local bank (a bank she otherwise writes about with considerable warmth). Garson also has a gift for explaining complicated stuff. I was especially enlightened by her account of the origins of Eurodollars and her description of how oil refining works. Sometimes her loosey-goosey style can get annoying. I occasionally wished she'd be more specific, especially on financial terms. Several times she referred to 20% profits without saying what she meant - return on equity? Increase in stock price? Something to do with dividends? Garson's call for a more humane form of globalization is hard to argue with - though the specifics are debatable. For this reader (of somewhat confused politics) one conclusion emerged crystal clear from Garson's description of working poor parents scrimping on medical treatment for themselves and their kids: America's refusal to enact universal health coverage is shameful and wrong.
Very nice book for people whit alot of time.......2005-10-20
I bougth this book thinking iwill find some quick answers about the money but the only thing i found was that this book is for people who has a lot of time or people in vacation who want to read something about the money in a nice story, but if you are the people that want quickly answers about the money, i recommend to you a book named ECONOMIC EXPLAINED Autor: Rober Heilbroner and Lester Thurow.
???.......2004-02-19
Where do you think the book advanced payment coming from? THe book only tells half of the story.
Highly Recommended!.......2003-03-06
Some books set out to accomplish the impossible and come admirably close. Barbara Garson's volume is a prime example. Can you deposit money in a little rural bank and really trace its spread across the global monetary system? How do you know that a multi-million dollar loan to, say, shrimp exporters in Thailand, really has anything to do with the actual dollars you deposited? But that's not the point of this book. The author embarks on a whirlwind, worldwide tour of the global financial juggernaut, and shows how money falls like a drop in a pond and emits waves of disruption that seemingly spread out forever. Garson concludes that deregulation needs to be reigned in, a reasonable anticipation of the Enron mess. We from getAbstract highly recommend her book to business people and consumers who want a better feel for what the "global economic order" is all about, why people are protesting at each meeting of the WTO and whether you should be steamed as well.
A book on investing that connects the head to the heart.......2002-03-13
As a fairly intelligent individual who has never taken an economics course, I've been trying to make sense of the world of investing on my own. The author takes us on her own journey to do the same, and in the process we come to meet the faces and the people behind the whole process. She goes about it with a very open-minded, down to earth approach, and for the most part, doesn't draw a lot of her own conclusions. Rather, she lets you come to your own. At last, some information on investing that is more than just numbers and returns. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for where to invest their money, or is just trying to understand how "money makes the world go around." After having read the book, now I can go to the Reuters newswires and have an understanding of just what is behind the latest news announcements, what they mean in real terms for real people. The book has made me think twice about what it means to be chasing the high returns, and what implications that may have on the lives of others. I found this book to be very heart opening, and my compassion for the world is immense.

From the supplier: Low-wage earners in poor countries are forced to live away from their families and work for foreign employers in other countries because of better pay. Singaporean companies, for example, recruit migrant workers from subcontractors in foreign countries such as Thailand, the Philippines, India, Burma, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and China. These employers take advantage of this situation owing to shortages of cheap labor in their countries.

Product Description
The workforce is fed up with politics, back-biting, power trips and the depletion of ethical business practices. They are ready to create a business culture that encourages and rewards honesty, integrity and intimacy. But, as in any journey, the first step is the hardest. The move from selfish and mechanical relationships in business (bad sex) to intimate, focused, and enduring relationships (good sex) will change business and the lives of those in the workforce in amazing ways - but how do we start? Sex, Intimacy and Business uses a universally understood metaphor to describe what is not working in business today and offers a new model for workplace behavior that will drive increased creativity, productivity, satisfaction and fulfillment in the world of work. Authors Lindsay Andreotti and Brian Hilgendorf have been listening to the outcry from countless people who are fed up with business as usual. Their years of observation and participation in business have led them to express what they believe to be the next driver of business success allowing and encouraging human authenticity in the workplace.
Customer Reviews:
Good Edgy Metaphor.......2007-01-07
Likening sex to building and managing a business makes you think of the basics we all want in life, recognition, respect, and feeling human. Good fundamentals in a quick read, a great reminder of what we should be doing to each other if we are truly in touch with ourselves.
What management should know.......2005-12-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this fresh look at the corporate world, especially the examples of how successful businesses treat their employees. It all makes a lot of sense, and gave me some real insight into how management could improve employee performance.
The Reality Of Today's Workplace.......2005-11-29
The nature of people and business has changed so drastically in the past 25 years, even in the 15 that I've been around, that anybody who is not their own boss NEEDS THIS BOOK.
SIB puts into words my unverbalized feelings of today's working world. It opened my eyes to how people communicate, what roles each of us play, and even helped me strategize my own career paths.
We have more means of, but fewer skills for, communication in this technological age. By getting back to the basics of real, intimate communication, we get "naked" with each other, which is both frightening and empowering. In the wake of Corporate Scandals, the Next Wave Of Business will thrive on honesty, openness, and emotional leadership. Unless SIB has been brought into the curriculum, the business will do "okay." Those who care, and know how to show it, will be miles ahead of those who fear change.
From customer service agent to CEO...........2005-11-29
There truly is something to be learned by people at any stage of the corporate game. This book was nice because it didn't speak over my head. Instead, it gave me honest-to-God INSIGHT as to how I can institute changes in my professional relationships. Don't let the metaphor throw you off!
Insightful Analogy and Great Book!.......2005-09-29
I generally don't to gravitate to books about the world of business -- I'm one of the "disillusioned" ones. And, I don't usually buy books with the word sex in the title either! But this book.....WOW! The metaphor (intimate relationships-business relationships) is very well-developed and makes for a very understandable, easy, and humorous read! As I read it, I found myself readily applying what I was learning to both business and personal relationships! I definitely recommend this fresh, new, approach to solving some of the many problems plaguing personal and businesss relationships these days!
Book Description
The season's most talked-about all-purpose personal strategy guide and philosophical compendium," said Newsweek of Robert Greene's bold, elegant, and ingenious manual of modern manipulation, The 48 Laws of Power. Now Greene has once again mined history and literature to distill the essence of seduction, the most highly refined mode of influence, the ultimate power trip.
The Art of Seduction is a masterful synthesis of the work of thinkers such as Freud, Ovid, Kierkegaard, and Einstein, as well as the achievements of the greatest seducers throughout history. From Cleopatra to John F. Kennedy, from Andy Warhol to Josephine Bonaparte, The Art of Seduction gets to the heart of the character of the seducer and his or her tactics, triumphs and failures. The seducer's many faces include: the Siren, the Rake, the Ideal Lover, the Dandy, the Natural, the Coquette, the Charmer, and the Charismatic. Twenty-four maneuvers will guide readers through the seduction process, providing cunning, amoral instructions for and analysis of this fascinating, all-pervasive form of power. Just as beautifully packaged and every bit as essential as The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction is an indispensable primer of persuasion and offers the best lessons on how to take what you want from whomever you want or how to prevent yourself from being taken.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read.......2007-09-23
This is a must read book if you want to understand seduction, control, influence etc. This is by far the best written book on the subject. But, its 800 pages long, so prepare to read a long story that demonstrates the seduction technique and then explains the hows and whys.
Very interesting..........2007-09-18
Good one. It provide you with a lot of good facts, so you can make good opinions about what's going on.
But for dating "starters" I recommend any easier book. That one can make you bored very soon.
Good book but not for marketers or married people.......2007-09-14
PROS: This book is written in the same style just like all the others, lots of historical examples. I purchased the audio book and the reading voice is excellent, one of the best voices I have heard for an audio book. I am a huge fan of Robert Greene and like all the other books,(48 laws of power, 33 strategies of war).
CONS: Not for marketers or married people. I thought this book was about how to seduce prospects into buying your product - I was wrong. This book is really for single people and has various historical lessons on how to seduce the opposite/same sex. There is a part in the book about children which I found weird and quite frankly a little disturbing. As a professional marketer and married man, I only found small parts of this book useful. This book is my least favorite of the three by Robert Greene. I hope this review helps.

It's kinda evil..and mostly full of stories.......2007-09-13
The book discusses ways on how to manipulate and emotionally torture a victim into believing they need you or want you. It's kinda evil. On top of that, there are stories of other people, that takes up 80% of the book. If I want to read about Casanova, I will take out a book about him.
Moralizers need not apply, but even the more unscrupulous of you should be warned.......2007-09-03
We've got plenty of people complaining about how amoral this book is and plenty of others who tell you about how great this book is so I don't think I really need to say anything about that here.
What DOES need to be said is that, even if you are the type of person who's perceptions are NOT dominated by moral values - meaning that you are more likely to apply the principals in this book - there are a few things you should know.
First of all I need to make one thing perfectly clear, this is NOT a "how to get laid" guide (though you can certainly use the principals in this book for that purpose, might be a bit of overkill though), if you're looking for a simple "how to get laid" guide, you're better off looking to works from Mystery, Ross Jeffries, or whoever else is into that sort of thing.
Now to tell you what this book is. It is a book on how to dominate, manipulate, and control someone to the point of making that person your slave.
Needless to say, applying these principles for the sole purpose of getting laid is somewhat akin to using an H-bomb to hunt down a squirrel. You can do it if you really want to, but proceed with caution.
The book also warns you against pursuing victims that seem overly self-sufficient, and that insecure or unfulfilled targets make much better victims. Be careful with this you guys! The practices outlined in this book are VERY powerful. If you go overboard with applying them to people who are TOO insecure or TOO unfulfilled, in other words people who are not emotionally stable, you could very well end up driving people into a deep depression or even suicide. That's how powerful this stuff is.
On a more positive note, there is one thing about this book that even those who are inhibited by higher moral standards can walk away with - a greater understanding of human nature (which, in my opinion, is the single most important subject there is). Fair warning, a number of things that society has conditioned us to believe about mankind and human nature, this book will turn them into ashes and does not leave much room for any sort of logical rebuttal. You won't recieve any sugar-coated nonsense here, principles that are warped with whatever agenda that those behind the curtain wish to impose upon you. No sir, none of that, just cold hard facts that may very well turn your concept of reality inside out.
Bottom line, this book is very potent and it provides you with a perspective that will change your model of reality. However, if it is used carelessly, it can destroy your life and cause you to destroy the lives of others. The teachings in this book are highly potent and if they are to be carried out at all, it must be done with maturity and responsibility.

Book Description
A recently completed international workplace survey highlights that many people intermingle their private and work lives. Time spent on tasks, the intensity of team relationships and the sharing of common interests make work a multipurpose site, satisfying personal needs as well as ambitions and career drives. Are managers prepared to face such challenges? No. However, through understanding workplace intimacy practices, firm guidance for managers is provided to better prepare them to address such sensitive encounters.
Book Description
Generations of social thinkers have assumed that access to legitimate paid employment and a decline in the ‘double standard’ would eliminate the reasons behind women’s participation in prostitution. Yet in both the developing world and in postindustrial cities of the West, sexual commerce has continued to flourish, diversifying along technological, spatial, and social lines. In this deeply engaging and theoretically provocative study, Elizabeth Bernstein examines the social features that undergird the expansion and diversification of commercialized sex, demonstrating the ways that postindustrial economic and cultural formations have spawned rapid and unforeseen changes in the forms, meanings, and spatial organization of sexual labor.
Drawing upon dynamic and innovative research with sex workers, their clients, and state actors, Bernstein argues that in cities such as San Francisco, Stockholm, and Amstersdam, the nature of what is purchased in commercial sexual encounters is also new. Rather than the expedient exchange of cash for sexual relations, what sex workers are increasingly paid to offer their clients is an erotic experience premised upon the performance of authentic interpersonal connection. As such, contemporary sex markets are emblematic of a cultural moment in which the boundaries between intimacy and commerce—and between public life and private—have been radically redrawn. Not simply a compelling exploration of the changing landscape of sex-work, Temporarily Yours ultimately lays bare the intimate intersections of political economy, desire, and culture.

Book Description
This timely reference provides an in-depth and up-to-date study of the most important groups of plant secondary compounds. No other work features such detailed diagrams of the biosynthetic pathways leading to the most important groups of secondary metabolites, as well as the structures of major types of compounds, their distribution in various taxonomic groupings of plants, and the evolutionary and ecological roles of these compounds.
Plant Secondary Metabolism presents a basic understanding of the origin of the compounds, the nature of the precursors involved, and the basic reactions, mechanisms, and stereochemistry. The origin of groups of secondary metabolites is linked to evolutionary principles, and their biological activity is viewed in a context of chemical ecology. Topics are treated comprehensively, enabling the reader to understand not only a particular group of compounds, but also how each group fits into the whole. In addition, the text allows readers to systematically survey various secondary metabolites and gain a quick working knowledge which can be applied to problems in a particular field.
Those researchers and students who will be most intrigued by this publication's broad overview on plant secondary metabolites come from a diverse range of disciplines, including agronomy, anthropology, biochemistry, biology, botany, chemistry, ecology, entomology, food science, forestry, geology, horticulture, pharmacognosy, plant biology, plant sciences, toxicology, and zoology.

Book Description
Plant secondary metabolites have been a fertile area of chemical investigation for many years, driving the development of both analytical chemistry and of new synthetic reactions and methodologies. The subject is multi-disciplinary with chemists, biochemists and plant scientists all contributing to our current understanding. In recent years there has been an upsurge in interest from other disciplines, related to the realisation that secondary metabolites are dietary components that may have a considerable impact on human health, and to the development of gene technology that permits modulation of the contents of desirable and undesirable components.Plant Secondary Metabolites: Occurrence, Structure and Role in the Human Diet addresses this wider interest by covering the main groups of natural products from a chemical and biosynthetic perspective with illustrations of how genetic engineering can be applied to manipulate levels of secondary metabolites of economic value as well as those of potential importance in diet and health. These descriptive chapters are augmented by chapters showing where these products are found in the diet, how they are metabolised and reviewing the evidence for their beneficial bioactivity.

Book Description
Plant secondary metabolism is an economically important source of fine chemicals, such as drugs, insecticides, dyes, flavours, and fragrances. Moreover, important traits of plants such as taste, flavour, smell, colour, or resistance against pests and diseases are also related to secondary metabolites.
The genetic modification of plants is feasible nowadays. What does the possibility of engineering plant secondary metabolite pathways mean? In this book, firstly a general introduction is given on plant secondary metabolism, followed by an overview of the possible approaches that could be used to alter secondary metabolite pathways. In a series of chapters from various authorities in the field, an overview is given of the state of the art for important groups of secondary metabolites.
No books have been published on this topic so far. This book will thus be a unique source of information for all those involved with plants as chemical factories of fine chemicals and those involved with the quality of food and ornamental plants. It will be useful in teaching graduate courses in the field of metabolic engineering in plants.

Book Description
The chapters presented in Secondary Metabolism in Model Systems are a microcosm of what the recent completion, or near completion, of various genome projects are enabling biochemists to understand not only about control and regulation of secondary metabolism, and how various pathways relate to each other, but also about its relation to primary metabolism. A major paradigm shift is occurring in the way researchers need to view "secondary" metabolism in the future. It is also clear that model systems, such as the ones discussed in the symposium, are providing new information and insight almost faster than researchers can process it!
The volumes in this series contain articles on developing topics of interest to scientists, students and individuals interested in recent developments in the biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology of plants.
· An excellent series volume covering the advances in understanding of gene functions, a high profile area of research due to recent genome projects
· This book provides essential information on new model systems available to biochemists
· The chapters in this volume are based on the papers presented in the symposium entitled "Secondary Metabolism in Model Systems"

Book Description
Plants are superb synthesizers of organic compounds, producing an extensive range of products from the simple building blocks of carbon dioxide, water and inorganic ions. These secondary products are widely used in commerce, particularly the food and pharmaceutical industries. Recent
advances in the techniques of plant biotechnology and genetic engineering have increased the potential of plant cell cultures as an important source of these compounds. Researchers are now beginning to understand the factors that control the expression and regulation of genes involved in the
synthesis, transport, storage and metabolism of natural products. This volume contains contributions from eminent researchers who provide an up-to-date review of current work in this field and detail the exciting advances now being made.

Book Description
This new text documents, through case studies, the many scenarios in which data obtained from analysis of secondary metabolites and data obtained through molecular technology support each other and have influenced current theories of plant phylogeny. It fills the needs of scientists carrying out molecular work who require secondary metabolite analyses as support for their molecular analyses. The book provides a model as to how such work may be carried out in the future, and also provides a methodological and philosophical bridge between micro- and macromolecular systematics.
Book Description
Interactive Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences is an engaging tour of the topics covered in most behavioral science statistics textbooks: descriptive statistics, the logic of hypothesis testing, t tests, power analysis, confidence intervals, analysis of variance, correlation/regression, and nonparametric inferential statistics. Yet, it employs a radically different pedagogical approach. Without wholly abandoning the tradition of using a printed textbook to supplement classroom or online instruction, this system has at its core an interactive set of components that run through Web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Working through these components, students create their own customized learning experience, rather than passively reading a printed text. The end result is students who can better masterand perhaps even enjoya subject that many approach with trepidation.
System Components
The CD contains the text, with in-text queries, interactive activities and figures, calculation tools, and review exercises. This allows local access to the system for those times when working online proves slow or unreliable.
The Website includes everything above, plus many more online features. For more details regarding online features, see "Features of the Interactive Text," below. Purchasers of this textbook will have access to the online component for 180 days from their first login.
The Printed Textbook includes the full text, formulas, all figures, and statistical tables. It allows for reading and/or review while away from the computer, and provides students with a comfort zone as they become familiar with the online features.
Apart from providing a more enjoyable experience for students, Interactive Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences offers benefits for the computer-savvy instructor. First, the text is customizable via the "Note" feature: here instructors can add notes to any page as well as links to graphics or Websites of interest; their students see these notes whenever they are reading the text online. As students progress through the chapters, instructors can assign specific problems to assess their progress. When students submit their answers, the server checks them and stores graded answers. Instructors can then view the answers in their own Web browsers, assign a grade, and generate an e-mail response. This saves class and grading time (not to mention trees).
Customer Reviews:
interactive statistics rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-09-17
the online version of the book allows you to regenerate questions. there is an detailed explanation of the answers as well as hints. the text is easy to read and understand. recommend it for all levels. a must have if you are taking statistics..........
Interactive Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences.......2007-09-17
The importance of this book is the interactive CD...and even better the alternative interactive website. For one who is new to statistics and for those in the social sciences this is a very worthwhile purchase and the practice exercises (which you can redo as often as needed to gain proficiency) is the best feature.
