Better textbooks exist..........2004-03-23
Portions of the textbook are written at levels which are too low for college/university students, while other portions expect students to go beyond the scope of the material covered in the text. For example, in the chapter on demand and supply, surpluses and shortages are never referred to as such. Instead, they are only referred to as 'excess supply' and 'excess demand'. Too simplistic of a definition is also used for opportunity cost.
At the same time, additional problems inserted near the end of each chapter (not the chapter problems themselves), require students to apply the theory in a way that isn't taught in the textbook. Any student who has been required to complete these questions, on the basis of the textbook alone, may have experienced a lot of frustration from attempting these problems.
In addition, the textbook presents a detailed theory of taxicab licensing, yet doesn't completely explain all of the needed theory (short-run and long-run) for the market structures (pure competition, monopoly, etc.) The explanation of taxicab licensing is poor, for this level of student.
For any professor considering adopting this textbook, the testbank offers some very good questions. However, apparently some of the questions have been changed, perhaps from an earlier edition, but the answers haven't been. Overall, there were more errors in this testbank than in others I've used.
To anyone required to purchase this textbook for a course, I would recommend purchasing or borrowing other textbooks to supplement this text. If someone wants to learn Microeconomic theory on their own, there are better books available.

Beyond Reductionism: Gateways for Learning and Change
Neil Douglas , and Terry Wykowski Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1574442635 |
Book Description
Beyond Reductionism: Gateways for Learning and Change takes a critical look at organizational learning and change management from a leadership perspective in late 20th century organizations. The authors argue that the dynamics that restrain the efforts of leaders transcend personal attributes and leadership styles. They are rooted in the nature of work and institutions and the histories and cultures of the organizations themselves. Often seen as the central constraint - and the core limiting factor in organizational effectiveness and learning - reductionism is defined as over-simplification and a failure to comprehend the nature of life in organizations by concentrating too fully on discrete and disconnected aspects of reality. The other constraints of hierarchy and institutional knowledge are activated and driven by reductionism. After reading Beyond Reductionism: Gateways for Learning and Change leaders at all organizational levels will understand why low levels of organizational learning persists and change efforts fail. They will also be equipped to recognize and reject overly simplistic and superficial interventions, helping them to create non-reductionist strategies for creating and sustaining change. Actual project designs, experiences, techniques and results are described in the book within an overall framework that emphasizes the roles and interconnectedness of individuals, leaders, and groups, all operating within the overlay of culture.

The harmony of the spheres..........2004-01-16
Astronomy is a very visual science, and this book takes full advantage of the many photographs returned by the Hubble telescope, planetary probe expeditions, and first-class telescopic images from around the world. It presents graphics, charts, and images of non-visual spectrum data in easy to understand formats.
The first section is entitled 'The Celestial Clockwork' -- here Abell looks at the history of astronomy (which is intimately woven into the history of timekeeping, both in terms of hours of the day as well as seasons of change), then introduces some broad concepts such as gravitation and star movements. This section also looks at eclipses, anticipating the later section on earth and moon.
The second part looks at 'Radiation from Space' -- this actually means, what can we see from space? Abell is not talking about harmful radiation here, but rather the light and other electromagnetic signals we get from stars, planetary bodies, celestial objects, and even the background radiation in the universe, which is likely the signature of the Big Bang. Abell also looks at observation devices -- optical telescopes, radio telescopes, and space-platform and probe observation devices.
The third section deals with the Realm of the Planets -- earth and moon; the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars); the Jovian planets (the gaseous giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and the ambiguous Pluto, as well as addressing the question of further planets); the various other bodies (debris, Abell terms them) in the solar system, such as asteroids, comets, solar atmosphere; finally, Abell discusses theories of the origin of the solar system and general properties of all planets.
The fourth section goes further afield into the Realm of the Stars. Abell investigates the motion and distance of stars, the aspects and properties of starlight (visual and extra-visual spectrum), properties of stars, general distribution, and finally takes the opportunity to look at the possibility of life on planets around other stars.
The fifth section is in many ways a continuation of the fourth, dealing with the Life Cycle of Stars. In addition to looking at the general pattern of the evolution of stars and the differing fates of stars, from nebulae and initial accretion to middle age to the destruction as dwarf stars, pulsars, neutron stars or even black holes, Abell looks at the theories of relativity (both special and general) and the implications that stars' gravitation have on the universe and on themselves.
The final section deals with galactic astronomy and large-scale cosmology, the overall structure of the universe. The different types of galaxies are introduced and examined (spiral, bar, elliptical, irregular), as well as quasars and inter-galactic matter. The structure of the universe is examined in clusters and superclusters of galaxies, and finally the book concludes looking at the Big Bang theory, the current reigning theory of universal origin and expansion.
The appendices include a wealth of data, including star maps, data about planets, stars, and galaxies, information about eclipses, and various charts of mathematical and chemical data relating to astronomy.
Abell introduces each subject in a very easy-to-read way, incorporating the history and the personalities behind astronomy at every turn. This is a text for the mathematically phobic person to learn astronomy from, as well as those who want a general overview, or a good solid introduction before expanding the study into the more technical aspects of astronomy and astrophysics.
