3 out of 5 stars Better textbooks exist..........2004-03-23

While experimenting with different textbooks for my Microeconomics classes, I decided to try the O'Sullivan and Sheffrin text. That experiment lasted two semesters.

Portions of the textbook are written at levels which are too low for college/university students, while other portions expect students to go beyond the scope of the material covered in the text. For example, in the chapter on demand and supply, surpluses and shortages are never referred to as such. Instead, they are only referred to as 'excess supply' and 'excess demand'. Too simplistic of a definition is also used for opportunity cost.

At the same time, additional problems inserted near the end of each chapter (not the chapter problems themselves), require students to apply the theory in a way that isn't taught in the textbook. Any student who has been required to complete these questions, on the basis of the textbook alone, may have experienced a lot of frustration from attempting these problems.

In addition, the textbook presents a detailed theory of taxicab licensing, yet doesn't completely explain all of the needed theory (short-run and long-run) for the market structures (pure competition, monopoly, etc.) The explanation of taxicab licensing is poor, for this level of student.

For any professor considering adopting this textbook, the testbank offers some very good questions. However, apparently some of the questions have been changed, perhaps from an earlier edition, but the answers haven't been. Overall, there were more errors in this testbank than in others I've used.

To anyone required to purchase this textbook for a course, I would recommend purchasing or borrowing other textbooks to supplement this text. If someone wants to learn Microeconomic theory on their own, there are better books available.

4 out of 5 stars Manageable and informative!.......2001-12-14

The second edition of Economics: Principles and Tools by O'Sullivan/Sheffrin provides a good introduction to both macro and microeconomics. This was especially true for me since my math skills aren't up to par. It was manageable and understandable for those who don't do well with numbers. The CD was helpful in understanding the graphs that were involved in textbook. In addition to providing an introduction to economics, it does a good job of helping you understand how you can use economics in your everyday life. Especially in chapter two where they introduce five economic principles you will reuse throughout your economic course and in your daily life: (1) principle of opportunity cost, (2) marginal principle, (3) principle of diminishing returns, (4) spillover principle, (5) reality principle. Economics: Principles and Tools is an excellent resource and textbook for anyone who has a limited knowledge of economics and is willing to learn these five economic principles.

Lacking is ease of use. Chapter 8 (critical chapter) especially dense. Did not like.

3 out of 5 stars Not to bad.......2000-04-06

This book was very easy to read, it can be classified as an intro to Econ. It is used in the 201 class at UTK. It is however not that great when it comes to examples.

                  Book Description

Beyond Reductionism: Gateways for Learning and Change takes a critical look at organizational learning and change management from a leadership perspective in late 20th century organizations. The authors argue that the dynamics that restrain the efforts of leaders transcend personal attributes and leadership styles. They are rooted in the nature of work and institutions and the histories and cultures of the organizations themselves. Often seen as the central constraint - and the core limiting factor in organizational effectiveness and learning - reductionism is defined as over-simplification and a failure to comprehend the nature of life in organizations by concentrating too fully on discrete and disconnected aspects of reality. The other constraints of hierarchy and institutional knowledge are activated and driven by reductionism. After reading Beyond Reductionism: Gateways for Learning and Change leaders at all organizational levels will understand why low levels of organizational learning persists and change efforts fail. They will also be equipped to recognize and reject overly simplistic and superficial interventions, helping them to create non-reductionist strategies for creating and sustaining change. Actual project designs, experiences, techniques and results are described in the book within an overall framework that emphasizes the roles and interconnectedness of individuals, leaders, and groups, all operating within the overlay of culture.

5 out of 5 stars A breakthrough book for managers seeking true change........1999-10-20

If Pogo and his friends had not been in the friendly confines of the Okeefenokee, but, instead, had been mired in the swamp of a typical modern workplace, the vision transmitted to them as chiseled on a mountaintop would have read: "We have met the enemy, and it is Reductionism!" Authors Neil Douglas and Terry Wykowski, two true students of the real-world organizational mores and imperatives that bubble underneath today's seemingly ever-changing management processes, have successfully identified and dissected the major stumbling blocks to positive change, a phenomenon they aptly title "Reductionism." They use this word to describe the modern penchant of too many who have been intrusted with the obligations of management of complex organizations (and the humans who comprise the organizations) to reduce every process and interaction (and, ultimately, every "job") to a simplistic, jargon-filled state. This book serves as both a breakthrough text and as a teaching aide to those who would seek to have their organizations function in truly efficient, functional and successful ways. The authors identify and describe in detail (and with true to life examples) the constraints on organizational change, and place the onus on the manager (at whatever level) to learn to recognize both objective and subjective factors and imperatives that comprise the status-quo of any organization. The authors give practical advice on the tools of actual management of organizations, the primary one being "delegation." Refreshingly, in dealing with this tool, the authors don't offer it as a trite panacea, but, instead, stress the absolute need for actual delegation with purpose and the need for accountability on the part of those to whom there is delegation. Douglas and Wykowski give many good working examples of how both individual "managers" and the "organizations" themselves can subvert ill-conceived and ill-managed attempts at organizational change. Like the subject and point of the book, the authors fill the pages of the book with facts, examples and discussion. There are no cartoons or other fluff that overly simplify or detract from the thesis and the message. This is not another "management according to Sesame Street" book. However, as it is a serious, thoughtful and thought-provoking book, it would serve well as the basis for organizational study, particularly in groups. The examples utilized are wide-ranging, and relate to many types of, and levels within, organizations. This book is a "must-read and must-study" for a down-sized, right-sized, out-sourced, Kaizan'd, process engineered, empowered, quality-council'd, low-hanging-fruit, change-focused world.

In poetic, easy-to-understand text, Jean Marzollo explains the many aspects of a star, including why a star isn¹t visible during the day, and whether the moon is a star. The book¹s bright cut-paper illustrations by Judith Moffatt add clarity to the science concepts throughout the book.

I was looking for books to use with my first grade leveled reading groups, especially for my lower ones. This would be too difficult for them, even though it's Level 1. I was able to use Monkey See, Monkey Do (also Level 1) with one of my groups, but maybe the science books are more difficult. This would be ok as a read aloud or for more advanced readers. Some of the words in the story include cloudy, pictures, constellations, handle, Polaris, except, reflects and sailors.

I was also surprised to see this is actually a Scholastic Reader. I didn't realize that was synonymous with Hello Reader.

I have been more pleased with Green Light Readers and School Zone: Start to Read.

                      5 out of 5 stars what a great idea.......2003-06-03

I think this is a great book for introducing young kids to astronomy. I bought it for my 4 year old son at the bookstore and caome online to order their other books .... It's a very hands on type of book with about 18 easy activities to do with your kid. And it comes with a page of stickers which you place on the activity page after you complete that activity. It's as basic as you can get which makes it easy to understand. It covers time, clouds, rainbows, moon, planets, stars. Really a great idea.

5 out of 5 stars The harmony of the spheres..........2004-01-16

I have always been a fan of George Abell's astronomy text, 'Realm of the Universe'. The first edition of it encountered was the third edition, published in 1984. It has gone through several more editions, and yet it remains true to the basic structure of the subject. This is a text intended for the non-scientist; it is a text often used for liberal arts students in one-semester courses on astronomy. It involves mathematics and formulae, but relies more on the intuitive sense of astronomy and is not heavy on technical terminology or confusing descriptions of use only to other scientists.

Astronomy is a very visual science, and this book takes full advantage of the many photographs returned by the Hubble telescope, planetary probe expeditions, and first-class telescopic images from around the world. It presents graphics, charts, and images of non-visual spectrum data in easy to understand formats.

The first section is entitled 'The Celestial Clockwork' -- here Abell looks at the history of astronomy (which is intimately woven into the history of timekeeping, both in terms of hours of the day as well as seasons of change), then introduces some broad concepts such as gravitation and star movements. This section also looks at eclipses, anticipating the later section on earth and moon.

The second part looks at 'Radiation from Space' -- this actually means, what can we see from space? Abell is not talking about harmful radiation here, but rather the light and other electromagnetic signals we get from stars, planetary bodies, celestial objects, and even the background radiation in the universe, which is likely the signature of the Big Bang. Abell also looks at observation devices -- optical telescopes, radio telescopes, and space-platform and probe observation devices.

The third section deals with the Realm of the Planets -- earth and moon; the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars); the Jovian planets (the gaseous giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and the ambiguous Pluto, as well as addressing the question of further planets); the various other bodies (debris, Abell terms them) in the solar system, such as asteroids, comets, solar atmosphere; finally, Abell discusses theories of the origin of the solar system and general properties of all planets.

The fourth section goes further afield into the Realm of the Stars. Abell investigates the motion and distance of stars, the aspects and properties of starlight (visual and extra-visual spectrum), properties of stars, general distribution, and finally takes the opportunity to look at the possibility of life on planets around other stars.

The fifth section is in many ways a continuation of the fourth, dealing with the Life Cycle of Stars. In addition to looking at the general pattern of the evolution of stars and the differing fates of stars, from nebulae and initial accretion to middle age to the destruction as dwarf stars, pulsars, neutron stars or even black holes, Abell looks at the theories of relativity (both special and general) and the implications that stars' gravitation have on the universe and on themselves.

The final section deals with galactic astronomy and large-scale cosmology, the overall structure of the universe. The different types of galaxies are introduced and examined (spiral, bar, elliptical, irregular), as well as quasars and inter-galactic matter. The structure of the universe is examined in clusters and superclusters of galaxies, and finally the book concludes looking at the Big Bang theory, the current reigning theory of universal origin and expansion.

The appendices include a wealth of data, including star maps, data about planets, stars, and galaxies, information about eclipses, and various charts of mathematical and chemical data relating to astronomy.

Abell introduces each subject in a very easy-to-read way, incorporating the history and the personalities behind astronomy at every turn. This is a text for the mathematically phobic person to learn astronomy from, as well as those who want a general overview, or a good solid introduction before expanding the study into the more technical aspects of astronomy and astrophysics.
