The Social Risks of Agriculture: Americans Speak Out on Food, Farming, and the Environment
Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 027597765X |
Book Description
In a vast society where environmentally conscious nonfarming voters and consumers have grown to greatly outnumber those directly engaged in agriculture, what happens in agriculture becomes increasingly subject to control by the general society, as policies and laws cater to constituents and consumers. This book provides an overview of how Americans perceive and value farmers and examines public opinion with regard to a number of agricultural issues. Based on analysis of national survey data, the authors offer an empirically based discussion and interpretation of those views and perceptions that help to shape policy and social sustainability. This unique collection illustrates that in addition to its natural, biological, and economic risks, agriculture has social risks that reverberate through all levels of society. As the general population grows and the number of farms and farmers diminishes, the weight of public opinion becomes more important in the policy arena of society as well as in the market demands for food and fiber grown in safe and favorable environmental conditions. Setting the stage with a consideration of the larger society's interests in agricultural issues and of social and agricultural interdependence, the contributors cover a range of topics and issues affecting agriculture at the end of the 20th century. Chapters examine public perceptions of government's role in farming; support for an environmentally friendly agricultural system; views on pesticides and chemicals in foods; consumer attitudes on food safety; threats to clean drinking water, concerns over farm animal welfare; and the basic agrarian ethic of American society. The book concludes with a look to the future of the social risks of agriculture in the 21st century.

The Magic of Self-Directed Work Teams: A Case Study in Courage and Culture Change
Paul C. Palmes Manufacturer: American Society for Quality ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0873896769 |
Book Description
Northern Pipe Products is today experiencing unprecedented efficiencies, employee involvement, a vibrant and desired training program, record output per-man hour, and lowest overall waste in company history. What it did and learned over the past five years is the story of this book. The science of Self-Directed Work Teams resides in the realization that chance and stewardship are different sides of the same coin. Admitting to the obvious truth of infinite human variation dismantles the notion of truly controlling people. If not in their actions, surely in their minds and reflected in their attitudes people resent being told what to do. They much prefer to be told why something must be done and then allowed to apply their unique talents and strengths to manage the assignment. Leaders who understand and therefore respect individual differences use diversity to create value, allowing the insights of others to create often-superior approaches.
This story could have taken place in a hospital, school, supermarket, or any other organization that requires people to work together for the greater good. Regardless of the setting, be it computer service, healthcare, education, manufacturing or child care, what follows could just as well be your story. Because it's about people and their unlimited potential to achieve extraordinary things, the manufacture of pipe is simply a metaphor. Any group of people facing another day just like yesterday can choose to follow this path, regardless of the style or color of shoes they wear. True opportunity is "one size fits all."

High-Performing Self-Managed Work Teams: A Comparison of Theory to Practice
Dale E. Yeatts , and Cloyd Hyten Manufacturer: Sage Publications, Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0761904700 |
Book Description
Since the mid-1970s, pressure from international competition has forced U.S. businesses to look for better ways to achieve and maintain a competitive position. At the same time, public organizations have been asked to produce their services with fewer dollars. The result of these trends has been a growing urgency among public and private organizations to find new ways of reducing their expenses while maintaining or increasing productivity and quality. One popular tool is the self-managed work team (SMWT). How is it different than a work group or short-term team? Which problems compel an organization to create an SMWT? What factors explain successful SMWTs? What must the organization do to develop high-performance, cost-effective teams? In High-Performing Self-Managed Work Teams, Dale E. Yeatts and Cloyd Hyten, Principle Investigators for the three-year National Science Foundation study of the performance of SMWTs, answer these questions and thoroughly examine the most widely accepted theories that attempt to explain SMWT performance. They introduce a synthesis of these theories based on 10 case studies from three different settings: manufacturing, public service, and health care. In an accessible style, the authors lead students and professionals to better understand the theory behind SMWTs as well as the practical aspects of when to use SMWTs to find solutions and how to develop achieving teams. This book appeals to practitioners and scholars in management, human resources, organization studies, industrial psychology, public administration, organizational communication, marketing, sociology, public health, and nursing.
