A good introduction to macroeconomics.......2003-12-25
"Increasing demand leads to rising interest rates which leads to reduced investment spending and appreciating currency exchange rates..." The authors of "Macroeconomics" effortlessly provide the economic reasoning that underlie events like these such that they really make common sense - and without the need for rote memorization on the part of the reader. A previous reviewer from Los Angeles did an excellent job in praising Baumol and Blinder for their clear and concise teaching, and I strongly agree with his comments. Instead of going into abstract theories and ideas, Baumol and Blinder focus on making the reader understand the "real world" implications of macroeconomics. For example, each chapter in their book introduces a different contemporary economic issue as a way to illustrate the ideas being described in the text. Additionally, the authors outlined eight take-home messages that they believe the reader should remember after finishing the book. Although the authors label these take-home messages as "Ideas for Beyond the Final Exam", these ideas are equally relevant for student and non-student alike.
It should be kept in mind that the eighth edition of this textbook was published in 1999, so most of the "contemporary" issues that are discussed within are now out of date. In one chapter, for example, the authors' upbeat commentary on America's 1998 budget surplus seems sadly ironic considering the large budget deficit that we are currently dealing with in financing the War on Terror in 2003. Additionally, I thought many of the examples in the book were a bit "pro-Clinton", and depending on one's own political orientation, that may or may not be welcome. I have not looked at the ninth (and latest) edition of "Macroeconomics", but assuming that the fundamental principles remain the same, I would encourage the reader to pick up that copy in order to have a more current and up-to-date illustration of ideas.
Readers looking for mathematical models and equations to play with will be sorely disappointed, as the only foray into mathematical analysis involves deriving the demand-side equilibrium condition of the Keynesian economic model (a simple algebraic equation). But considering that the slant of this book is towards "real world" understanding, I think the authors were probably justified in keeping the mathematical equations to a minimum.
All in all, I think "Macroeconomics" by Baumol and Blinder would be an excellent introduction for the economically-illiterate person (as I was before reading this book). Although many of the examples in the eighth edition are a bit out of date, it is true that the fundamental economic principles that are discussed endure throughout all of the editions of this textbook.

this is a good straight forward text that does not get bogged down in the unecessary details for an introduction to the subject. It is simplified, and straightforward, while trying to be enjoyable reading.

Baumol and Blinder explain all the important concepts of macroeconomics with tremendous clarity. Students with little or no knowledge of economics will find this book most straight-forward. Interesting real world examples are given to reinforce key ideas. For example, the authors describe the Asian crisis of 1998 to illustrate the shortcomings of a fixed exchange rate system. Secondly, unlike other econ. textbooks, this one is filled with colorful graphs and even photographs. I wouldn't be too surprised if this book succeeds in piquing the interest of those students, who are averse to econ. Finally, the attempts at humor are generally unsuccessful but provide a refreshing change from the unceasing monotony of most college textbooks.
the authors clearly know how to teach.......2000-04-04
I think this introductory econ book is exceptionally good as a text book; a book that truely deserves 5 stars. If a book explains things clearly, I usually give it 4 stars, but this book goes beyond that. The authors made a concious effort to make learning easy and meaningful.
Right at the beginning, the authors will tell you that they don't expect you to be a econ fanatic and remember every little detail - in fact, the authors seem to completely understand why we students forget most details soon after the final exam. So, right a way they list out the main ideas - in their own words: "ideas for beyond the final exam". Not only did the authors filtered out the most important material, they also truly believed that the material will be improtant beyond the final exam - in life that is. It is the first text book I saw that has such a candit and honest attitude because so many books and so many people talks down to me rather than at me.
Also, for each chapter, the authors always begin with some kind of "bait question", something that the reader understands but usually can't answer right a way. This is a great way to focus the chapter and entice people to read. And all the examples the authors use are either famous or recent (or both). One effect is to make you think what you are learning is truly useful because you can use it to analyze so many things from the news. A more subtle impression is that the authors really did update the book every few years to reflect important events that just occurred. As a computer science engineering major, I have seen countless "8th editions" that's just like the prior ones - but I seriously doubt the prior editions of this econ book talked about Asian economic crisis or the booming economy of the 1998 / 99

i bought this book for an economics class and it is one of the best textbooks i have ever used. it is easy to read and understand, plus it doesn't get nearly as boring as a lot of other textbooks. it is written for the common person and uses lots of examples to illustrate ideas - this is a great book!

Quintessential good introduction.......2003-02-17
I used this book as my first introduction to economics, and even many years after having read it I continue to use it as a source of reference to the most simple concepts of economics. It has the very best simple explanations of economic principles that I have ever seen. It is filled with interesting stories that bring these principles to the real world, showing a novice the potential power of these ideas. This is Economics 101 at its best.
It's mainstream economics myths and legends.......2002-09-11
I didn't buy the book. I looked at some parts to verify a critique by others I read. I found this quote:
"So while saving may pave the road to riches for an individual, if the nation as a whole decides to save more, the result may be poverty for all!"
This thinking is flawed. After all, true savings means that we have put aside something we created (instead of consuming it) that someone can now use to sustain themselves while they create new products and jobs for those who were laid off from unprofitable businesses. Without these savings, we would not be able to survive to produce more. And if we don't, ourselves, produce more than we consume, then where will all the new businesses get their resources to run their new business (before it starts to produce anything).
As usual, these writers of mainstream economics don't seem able to follow through with a chain of events. It's as though when someone saves a dollar's worth of some product, it is always burried and lost to human kind. These authors would have us continue to consume everything around us without any regard for new production. Somehow this would result in less proverty.
Unless you are forced to buy this book for a course in Economics, you would be better off looking elsewhere. Better yet, find a better course in economics, unless you are only interested in working for some organization that feeds itself by spreading false economic theory.

I am teaching economics and have read the textbooks written by Stiglitz, Mankiw, Samuelson etc.,but I think this is the best.It not only explains the elements of economics in plain words,but also convey lots of incisive insights which we should keep in mind when we tackle economic problems. I found Baumol and Blinder very instructive as well as interesting.

Found the authors to not mince words - got to the point, concise, explained concepts visually and verbally. Excellent text for an undergrad beginning Econ class. Used it as an undergrad and continue to recommend. Updated version refines Micro theory, which was necessary.

The author does a good job of exlpaining Economics, Priciples and Policy. But, his organizational skills are limited. The chapters are out of order in my opinion.

Straight to the Point........2006-07-17
Levine gives an impressive amount of advice, which if followed will increase your value to an organization substantially. Many of the ideas presented seem elementary in concept, yet are often overlooked by the majority of the workforce.
I personally enjoyed the "Straight to the point" format, which Levine takes throughout the book. He explains his point and reasoning then moves on without excessive elaboration.
I will definitely review this book in the future to remind myself of the simple ideas and concepts that can increase my value substantially.
Powerful and Insightful.......2005-08-09
I found this book to be both practical and insightful. The author has managed to strip away all of the "consultant speak" that you often find in books like this, and replaced it with concrete examples of leadership. I have also had the opportunity to attend a seminar conducted by the author and it reinforces many of the fundementals discussed in the book, as well as introduced new concepts. I recently purchased this book for a number of my employees and others I mentor within my organization. I highly recommend this book.
One of best books I've ever read.......2005-06-06
At the risk of sounding like I'm gushing, this is honestly one of the top 3 books I've ever read. My husband's boss recommended it to all of his managers. He had it laying on the counter for weeks unread, so I read it. I was so engrossed, I finished in one night and took away MULTIPLE tips that are both applicable in the business world AND your personal life. I bought my husband a replacement copy so my highlighting wouldn't annoy him and encouraged him to read right away. Although he's not a big book fan, he too took many tips away from the book.
It was just short of life-changing for me. There are actually more than 6 tips too -- there are sub-tips for each of the fundamentals which I found more helpful than the primary 6. On the personal side, it helped me cope through the death of my grandmother and get ready for my wedding. On the business side, it reinforced some principles I had which MY managers questioned, and gave me the courage to leave my job and apply those principles as well as new ones in a new job which I am much more happy with.
I agree with one of the other reviewers that you should replay/pull this book out again after reading to refresh on ideas, especially in new situations. If you don't get anything out of this book, I'd like to meet you as you must be quite a sage.
Quick, important lessons for personal success.......2005-06-04
The 50-70 lessons in this book may be overly simplistic for some readers.
However, I found them to be very refreshing and energizing. They outline very important fundamentals of personal business success, and I used a lot of these lessons to organize/prioritize/improve.
Levine put together a list of lessons learned in his career and make recommendations. These lessons are true factors of success. You can't be successful when you don't follow these principles; hence experienced, successful managers already know them, or most of them.
As recommended in the book though, it is very beneficial to "replay the tape", and spend a few hours reflecting on what you have learned. That's exactly what the book does.
I already knew most of the lessons, but still found it a very, very useful opportunity to "replay the tape" and go over important business principles.
I used principles in this book to set new objectives, and improve at work. I also realized that I knew some of these important lessons but didn't apply them simply by lack of focus or time. The book does a great job at bringing these lessons top-of-mind.
I always listen carefully when a successful executive tells me why he has been successful, and what lessons he learned in the business marketplace, and I think you should do the same.
The book reads very easily, and goes straight to the point. I highly recommend it.
Clarity in Success and Fundamentals!.......2005-04-03
Stuart Levine first clearly demonstrates why the most effective business leaders are not out of touch with day-to-day activities but are deeply involved with all aspects of business fundamentals. For that purpose, Levine convincingly analyzes why adding value is important to any companies both large and small. He then examines the other fundamentals that leaders must use to design, install, and operate effectively the people, strategy, and operations processes within their organization and their career. Those fundamentals are the distinctive modus operandi of execution-driven leaders, a culture that thrives on accountability and links rewards to performance, and the selection of the right people for the right jobs. To his credit, Levine has a jargon-free laser focus in reviewing the stumbling blocks that underlie the execution gap in those fundamentals. He indeed illustrates each of those fundamentals with relevant examples from their practice that makes it very enjoyable to read. He then explores the people, strategy, and operations processes that are built on the above-mentioned foundation for business excellence. Any leader aspiring for success and excellence can indeed find an enduring source of inspiration in that reference book.

This book of 1967 gives interesting technical informations on high-bush blueberry culture. Yes, the book is quite old, but it gives specific informations that you can not find esaily in more recent books (the kind of soils for example, irrigation).

Analysis of Freud's Book of Psychoanalysis.......2007-09-21
Freud, surprisingly, does a fine job in explicating the basic ideas behind Psychoanalysis. Unlike other texts which can use pretty complicated and verbose language, Freud (and the editors) used clear and easy to read syntax. I recommend this book for any looking to get a basic understanding of Psychoanalysis or to further enhance an undergraduate or graduate class.
Freud was interesting, but troubled..........2006-11-04
Frued was an interesting figure in history but a very troubled individual. He theorized based on his own feelings and beliefs about things (i.e. - Oedipus Complex, a son wants to kill his father and marry his mother) and also made a lot of generalizations from a handful of case studies of equally troubled individuals. When held up to scientific scrutiny, Freud is little more than an interesting appearance on Jerry Springer. He was addicted to cocaine, smoked dozens of cigars a day, and in the end took his own life. He should be surplanted as "the Father of Psychology" by B.F. Skinner or possibly Watson. They have done much more to make Psychology a science.

I would do great injustice if I attempt to provide my thoughts on the works of Sigmund Freud. I admit my knowledge in this area is shallow and limited; and I took this read more out of curiosity than a scientific study. With this said I would ask you to bear with me in the following paragraphs and at the same time suggest taking this read with a caution that undertaking this read requires immense patience.
The ego has the task for self-preservation; it performs that task by becoming aware of the stimuli, by storing up experiences about them in the memory. It handles it by avoiding strong stimuli, by dealing with moderate stimuli and finally by learning to bring about expedient changes in the external world to its own advantages. It performs that task by gaining control over the demands of the instincts, by deciding whether they are to be allowed satisfaction, by postponing the satisfaction to times and circumstances favorable to the external world or by suppressing their excitation entirely. It is in this activity that tensions are produced by the stimuli. The raising and lowering of these tensions cause unpleasure and pleasure. It is probable however that what is felt as pleasure or unpleasure is not the absolute heights and lows but something in the rhythm of the changes in them. The ego strives after pleasure and seeks to avoid unpleasure. An increase in unpleasure which is unexpected is met by a signal of anxiety.
In contrast to ego; the id expresses the true purpose of the individual organisms life. This consists for the satisfaction of its innate needs. No such purpose as keeping itself alive or protecting itself from dangers by means of anxiety can be attributed to the id. That is the task of the ego to figure out the most favorable and the least perilous method of obtaining satisfaction; which entails taking the external world into account. The forces which hide behind the tensions caused by the needs of the id are called instincts. Freud proposed the existence of two basic instinct Eros and destructive instinct. The aim of the first is to establish greater unities and to preserve them thus in short to bind them together. The aim of the second is to undo connections and to destroy things. Modifications in the proportions of the fusion between the two instincts have the most opposite result. A surplus of sexual aggressiveness will turn a lover into a sex murderer, while a sharp diminution in the aggressive factor will make him bashful or impotent.

I found that this book was on a higher level than most of Freud's literary pieces. Though many of the same information is presented here, it is presented in a wholey different manner, and a much more understandable one. I personaly find this a fairly good source of reference. Though one can not rely completely on anyone of Freud's ideas; they give good background to new ones.
