Book Description
"An uplifting ready for anyone with a hectic and stressful life, which is, let's face it, all of us." — Neil Bradford, Managing Director, Forrester North America
There has been a great deal of talk during the past two decades about the serious problem of stress and burnout. Most of the discussion focuses on the pessimistic side of the story. The underlying assumption is that we are in a fierce struggle, one that we frequently lose. Burnout is presented as almost inevitable, and solutions focusing on recovery are offered.
But there is another, more optimistic side to the story. What about the people who endure tough times with courage and grace, or bounce back from crises with renewed energy when logic tells you the situation should have left them depleted and discouraged? For all the talk about burnout, the fact is that the majority of people spend most of their lives coping amazingly well.
Being good at not burning out is a skill more than a genetic personality trait. Just like any skill, you have to work at it. You can learn to manage your behaviour and your thinking, but it takes discipline and practice to do it.
There are thousands of success stories every day about people who continue to survive and make the best of tough times. So how do they do it? What are the real stories of how individuals survive and thrive during uncertain and difficult times? And what is their advice on preventing burnout? This book answers these questions.

Book Description
* Gets behind the picture of crisis and collapse in African agriculture
* Shows how farmers successfully manage their most crucial resource
* Exemplary demonstration of how a new approach is needed in development policy and practice
Soils are critical to agriculture and, in turn, to food supply and to livelihoods. Sustainable management of soils is crucial for a large proportion of the population of Africa. Contrary to many claims, soil fertility is improved and managed successfully by small-scale farmers there.
Careful studies from widely different areas reveal how closely bound up soil management is with a whole complex of social, cultural and ecological factors - requiring a far more subtly tuned approach in development policy and practice. The book is an exemplary study of how the context of livelihood systems has to inform development policy and practice.

Description:
China is unique for its long history of permanent arable farming, large population, low per capita natural resources, and at the same time, having largely achieved food self-sufficiency. Some of the experiences of Chinese farming may provide clues or alternatives to other resource-poor countries in their strive for optimizing utilization of natural resources, improving soil fertility, and increasing food production. China's experiences are summarized into five attributes: (1) farmer's strong awareness of the importance of organic manuring in soil fertility and productivity, (2) exploration of all possible organic resources for recycling, (3) maximization of resource use efficiency, (4) crop rotation and cropping intensification, and (5) irrigation and use of chemical fertilizers. Chinese farmers regard almost all forms of organic wastes as 'organic treasures', and recycle them into organic fertilizers through animal digestion and/or composting. Biogas generation using organic wastes is explored as an extra step in this process. Recycling of organic wastes through animals and biogas generation utilizes effectively the part of organic carbon that can be converted directly to food and useful energy, which would otherwise be quickly lost in the early phase of decomposition in soil or compost. Crop rotation with legumes helps restore and balance soil nutrient supply. Multiple cropping is effective in boosting crop production from limited arable land. Cropping intensification, however, requires external nutrient inputs from chemical fertilizers, and in many places, also irrigation. Government support proved critical in the development of agricultural infrastructure as well as in overall crop production.
