1 out of 5 stars Complete WASTE OF TIME!.......2006-03-16

This book is like a fad diet book. It pads about two pages worth of real data with 200 pages of fluff. Don't waste your money or time buying this book! I am kicking myself for wasting my money. There are many better books than this one. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars Motivational text with step by step guidelines.......2000-11-30

I just bought it and I couldn't put the book down! In fact, I plan on reading it again and again just to get the concepts ingrained in my mind.

I am preparing to launch my own consulting business after several years of "dabbling" in workshop facilitation and the design of presentations for various one time clients. This book describes in clear words the practical things I need to do to move my business from a part time endeavor to a full time and SUCCESSFUL business of my own!

I looked at and skimmed dozens of books on this topic over the last two weeks, and this one is the best, hands down. If you are looking for a easy to use, yet comprehensive (Check out the table of contents to see for yourself just how comprehensive this book is!) and practical guide to starting your own consulting business, the Kishel's book is a must have!

This book is useless, I found it to mostly restate common knowledge. Personally I found nothing there that was new or even an interesting angle on a known truth. Bottom line: Invest your money elsewhere or save it altogehter. I wish I did.

Book Description

* Enjoy a small-town lifestyle while working with computers

* Create a successful business plan geared for rural computer consulting

* Learn to start & run a successful business based in a small town

This book is a step-by-step guide for the IT professional working a high-stress job who dreams about moving out of the city, but still wants to make a living working with computers. It can be done! This is exactly what author John Deans did in 1999 when he left one of Houston's most successful IT companies, moved his family to rural Texas, and started a home-based computer consulting firm.

Small towns are a relatively new niche for computer consultants, but they offer ample opportunity for starting a successful small business. To excel in this environment, you must become a jack-of-all-computer-trades and enjoy working closely with many clients every day. Owning your own business in a rural environment that may be unfamiliar to you presents challenges -- but the rewards are definitely worth it.

Deans will help you every step of the way. He discusses:

* Evaluating and expanding your IT skills * Preparing financially for the move * Choosing the right small town * Preparing your family emotionally for the move from the city to the country * Creating a successful business plan * Setting up a home office and a mobile office * Marketing your services in a small town

The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM with checklists and worksheets in MS Word, Excel, and PDF formats, for use on a Windows-based PC.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas, BUT...........2007-01-07

All told, a worthwhile read. Some good ideas and suggestions....but there's an overwhelming anti-liberal, right-wing lean to the whole thing. I don't mind people having political views, but the book practically drips liberal hatred which is sort of out-of-place for a book on running a consulting business.

His point is that small/rural towns are likely to be conservative, so if you're NOT conservative, it'd be in your interest to hide that...which may be valid - however he goes waaaay past that. The guy seems to miss no opportunity to preach Fox News, Hannity, liberals-are-bad, etc, and it doesn't really belong. If you can get past the whole preachy, right-wing nut job aspect of the thing, you'll get some good info.

5 out of 5 stars A Good and Practical Book.......2007-05-19

Hi, I am a Korean who would like to run my own coffee bar in Korea soon. It was very difficult to find really good guide books here in Korea, I mean ,written in Korean. Hoping to find one, I visited this Amazon and to my happiness I fianlly could find it, this book 'Start and Run a Coffee Bar'. This book is so practical and helpful to me. I appreciate that two writers would share their experience and knowledge with us.

    5 out of 5 stars Really Useful.......2007-03-15

I usually dont write these sorts of reviews but this was just exactly what i was looking for. A great primer on things you need to know and do to open a coffee shop including checklists. I would recommend it to newcommers to the business.

4 out of 5 stars Applys to other retail businesses.......2006-12-31

I bought this book several years ago before I knew what type of business I was going to be in. I've now owned a retail store (paint your own pottery) for more than 4 years and looking at this book now, it does have a lot of good information for anyone looking to start and run a retail business with a service aspect. The chapters on business planning, setting up your business, insurance, securing a site, getting to opening, staffing and the last 4-5 chapters on operations all are well-written and applicable to many forms of retail.

4 out of 5 stars Good information--not as complete as I would like.......2005-09-09

As a designer, I was looking more for input on equipment layout and functionality. This book gave me a good equipment list to discuss and layout with the client. The local building department loved our plans! The one area where the book falls short is helping to illustrate some good layouts.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice........2003-03-10

I'd recommend this to anyone who is seriously thinking about starting a home day-care. It has lots of useful info, and the last part of the book is dedicated to forms you'll need to start your business. I did think some of the activities were unrealistic to do with any child under the age of about four, but other than that it's a very good book.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......1999-04-07

A must have for anyone thinking about starting a home day care business. It definatly should be reprinted.

This is a great book for anyone starting a home day-care business. The tips in it are very helpful, the reading is enjoyable, and the craft ideas and day-care forms are a must have for anyone in the business.

              Book Description

Soil degradation, a decline in soil quality due to anthropogenic perturbations, is a serious threat with negative impacts on agriculture and the environment. The assessment and monitoring of all forms of degradation is essential to the evaluation of negative trends and implementation of mitigating technologies. Soil Degradation in the United States: Extent, Severity, and Trends is an assessment of current trends and geographic hot spots. It not only describes the types of soil degradation, but also evaluates the processes and triggers that cause the damage. Written by world-renowned leaders in the field of soil science, the book is thematically divided into three sections: Section I addresses basic processes and discusses concepts and definitions, land use change, and global trends. Section II provides the data on soil degradation by various processes such as water and wind erosion, salt build-up, and soil contamination. Section III summarizes the magnitude and severity of degradation and addresses policy issues in relation to economic and environmental impact. Several appendices provide much needed information on past trends and future projections. This book is a state-of-the-art compendium that provides a ready reference and data source for soil scientists, agronomists, environmentalists, land managers, and policy makers.

5 out of 5 stars A clear and entertaining look at behavior analysis.......2006-01-18

Using the clever literary device of having a fictional instructor dialog with his students, Paul Chance has put together a wonderful and entertaining text to introduce students to the science and application of behavior analysis. For those who have only heard of applied behavior analysis as being a "treatment" for autism, this book will be a fun-to-read eye-opener.

5 out of 5 stars A must for great & FUN reading on Applied Behavior Analysis.......2003-11-03

Paul Chance delivers a great book loaded with material that is brought to you in a very interesting way. The setting is basically a class room with students talking to the teacher, writing facts/terms on the board, and an intense interaction with student to teacher dialogue. This book is a must for those interesting in Applied Behavior Analysis. Paul Chance makes an interesting subject extremely fun to indulge in. When moving from chapter to chapter, there is always a brief overview of everything that has been covered in the previous chapters, making it hard to forget key information! A++ book

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating book, well written........1999-01-13

This is the most interesting "textbook" I've ever read. It has a lot of case studies and examples, plus excerpts from articles and books that are related to the topics. The book itself is well-organized and thorough. As I read it I kept wishing I'd taken a course in behavior analysis when I was in college.
