The basic premise of this book is that health care non-financial managers need to understand enough about financial management to be successful in their day-to-day activities while not being smothered with details. Ward provides managers with a basic level of financial management principles, including understanding financial statements and ratios, preparing an operating budget, and using financial analysis to help with decision making. Written in "plain English," the text is interspersed with illustrative cases and examples gleaned from more than twenty years of experience in both operational and financial areas and in both staff and management capacities. The text is sophisticated enough to be used by graduate students and practitioners as well as undergraduate programs in health services administration. It is also suited for independent study by professionals seeking to enhance their professional development. Lastly, it is useful as a day-to-day reference for managers in all fields in health care.

    Book Description

Prepare to change the way you see your colleagues-and yourself

In Our Separate Ways, authors Ella Bell and Stella Nkomo take an unflinching look at the surprising differences between black and white women's trials and triumphs on their way up the executive ladder. Based on groundbreaking research that spanned eight years, Our Separate Ways compares and contrasts the experiences of 120 black and white female managers in the American business arena. In-depth histories bring to life the women's powerful and often difficult journeys from childhood to professional success, highlighting the roles that gender, race, and class played in their development.

Although successful professional women come from widely diverse family backgrounds, educational experiences, and community values, they share a common assumption upon entering the workforce: "I have a chance." Along the way, however, they discover that people question their authority, challenge their intelligence, and discount their ideas. And while gender is a common denominator among these women, race and class are often wedges between them.

In Our Separate Ways, you will find candid discussions about stereotypes, learn how black women's early experiences affect their attitudes in the business world, become aware of how white women have-perhaps unwittingly-aligned themselves more often with white men than with black women, and see ways that our country continues to come to terms with diversity in all of its dimensions.

Whether you are a human resources director wondering why you're having trouble retaining black women, a white female manager considering the role of race in your office, or a black female manager searching for perspective, you will find fresh insights about how black and white women's struggles differ and encounter provocative ideas for creating a better workplace environment for everyone.

Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell is the Leon E. Williams Visiting Professor of Business Administration at the Tuck School of Business. Stella M. Nkomo is a Professor of Business Leadership at the University of South Africa Graduate School of Business Leadership.

GOOD BOOK. BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD AN INTERRACIAL FRIENDSHIP WITH A WHITE AMERICAN WOMAN. MY FRIENDS WERE EITHER EUROPEAN, ASIAN, AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN, SOUTH AMERICAN, OR BLACK. IM NOT EVEN INTERESTED IN CLOSING THE GAP WE'VE HAD BETWEEN EACH OTHER SINCE SLAVERY. AND EVEN IF WHITE WOMEN AND BLACK WOMEN ARE FRIENDS IN CORPORATE AMERICA, BLACK WOMEN STILL GET PAID LESS. ITS UNFAIR AND I DONT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH SOMEONE WHO THINKS THE WORD WOMAN, FEMININE, OR LADY MEANS WHITE.

5 out of 5 stars At the Sharp End.......2004-02-04

Bell and Nkomo dive straight to the heart of the matter. They base their findings on comprehensive personal interviews of African-American and white women working as managers or executives. Ultimately, the authors hit the reader over the head with the obvious: People from strikingly different backgrounds bring profound personal differences to the workplace. Too often, organizations stupidly attempt homogenizing everyone into minor variations on the existing (typically---older, white, and male) leadership theme. Unusually (Bell and Nkomo cited no such cases), organizations may wisely embrace the differences so that the organization and its people benefit from a more perceptive and inclusive world view.

Folks who need not spend their working hours "fitting in" contribute (A) more (B) less to the organization. Leaders who accept their people for who and what they are get (A) more (B) less from their subordinates. Guess where the authors suggest the readers take their outfits.

If you are wondering why the Black woman in your section of your company doesn't seem to want to socialize with you or seems guarded around her White co-workers or why the White women in your organization get all riled up about sexism but are silent when it comes to racism this is the book for you. I recommend this book along with Divided Sisters for those who really want Black and White women to unite in the workplace. These two tomes will give you more than a clue. They'll give you guidelines as how to build a truly "diverse" workplace where everyone is welcomed AS THEY ARE and not as stereotypes others want them to play out. If you are a Black woman, you'll understand why you see your work status merely as a "job" and not as a career and why you feel so much like an outsider looking in at your organization.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I wanted more in-depth analysis of how the White female managers confronted the idea of Black women as equals (and not just on the job), something I've experienced that White women have a difficult time doing in the workplace.

This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the career paths of women in the corporate world. That would include spouses of, grown children of, and parents of women. It is based upon Harvard research including in-depth case studies of both white and black women from childhood to the present day, career journeys one will find fascinating. When the reader returns to his/her workplace after completing this book, diversity will take on a more significant meaning. This book is also a useful tool in college career development classes. Rather than a dull read, it keeps the reader coming back for more.

      Book Description

In an in-depth community study of women in the civil rights movement, Christina Greene examines how several generations of black and white women, low-income as well as more affluent, shaped the struggle for black freedom in Durham, North Carolina. In the city long known as the "capital of the black middle class," Greene finds that, in fact, low-income African American women were the sustaining force for change.

Greene demonstrates that women activists frequently were more organized, more militant, and more numerous than their male counterparts. They brought new approaches and strategies to protest, leadership, and racial politics. Arguing that race was not automatically a unifying force, Greene sheds new light on the class and gender fault lines within Durham's black community. While middle-class black leaders cautiously negotiated with whites in the boardroom, low-income black women were coordinating direct action in hair salons and neighborhood meetings.

Greene's analysis challenges scholars and activists to rethink the contours of grassroots activism in the struggle for racial and economic justice in postwar America. She provides fresh insight into the changing nature of southern white liberalism and interracial alliances, the desegregation of schools and public accommodations, and the battle to end employment discrimination and urban poverty.

            Book Description

After thirteen printings and with nearly 100,000 copies in print since its publication twenty years ago, Boundaries Of The Soul has become recognized as THE classic introduction to Jung and the practice of Jung's psychology.  The book has been described as "the clearest and most coherent exposition of Jung's total thought," by Robertson Davies, and Alan Watts has called Dr. Singer "one of the great masters of the art." Now, in a completely revised edition of Boundaries Of The Soul, Dr. Singer incorporates the latest developments in Jungian psychology over the last two decades, particularlv in the areas of masculine/feminine relationships, the use of psychotherapeutic drugs, and the evolution of Jung's concept and personality types and its application both clinically and in the world of business and industry.  In addition, the case histories, so central to understanding many of Jung's concepts, have been re-examined and revised where necessary to correspond to the spirit of today's world. The updated edition of Boundaries Of The Soul should reaffirm the book's long-standing reputation as the best introduction to Jung's thought available.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A 1st step in reading about Jung before reading Jung.......2006-05-28

A wonderful accessible book written in warmth and sincerity and utilizing real case examples throughout in furthering understanding the applicability of Jung whose impact remains paramount.
Obviously a well studied book by Jungian practicioners, this books appeal is it's lucid prose and style, never dry, written by a then leading Jungian therapist carefully in tune with her then radical climate of the day.
The book remains contemporary and not dated with time especially since the revised edition was written in 1994 and changed where she deemed appropriate.
The major concepts of Jung are explained here through case studies in addition to great insights, such as her take on the understanding of Plato as distinct from Aristotle and the fusion that Jung accomplished between Adler and Freud with his development of his Personality Theory.
A very useful, enjoyable and needed book allowing one to enjoy the appetizer with all the historical background and theories dealt with prior to relishing Jung's actual text.

            5 out of 5 stars A rich & deep introduction to Jung.......2005-01-06

I first read this wonderful book some 30-odd years ago, and I've returned to it many times since. It remains one of the best introductions to Jung's thought & basic concepts that I know. Singer's personal touch, both in her own case histories & her autobiographical anecdotes, add to the book; the feeling is one of listening to a wise woman, rather than hearing a dry lecture. Singer not only knows her material intellectually, she knows it in her soul, and that comes through on every page. This book made me start paying attention to my dreams, and gave me a much-needed framework for understanding my life at a crucial time, when I was most in need of such a framework.

While the revised & updated edition is excellent, I'd also recommend reading the original 1972 edition if you can find it. For example, Singer's chapter on Jung & the Counterculture is superb, and not nearly as dated as the author herself believed; in any case, it provides a valuable on-the-spot account of Jungian thought & its intersection with the 1960s, the impact of which is still being felt today. Yet it's also fascinating to read the follow-up stories of some of her patients in the newer edition.

Jung is a much better known name today than when this book first appeared, but his thought isn't always as well understood as it might be. Let Singer take you on a revelatory tour of the Psyche & learn far more about both Jung & yourself than you ever imagined. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars You feel like you are being analyzed by a great mind.......2003-11-11

I have now read this book twice during crisis in my life and find June Singer's book on Jung the most accessible, understandable approach to Jungian analytical psychology that I have ever read. (I have read about 4000 pages of Jung's own work and undertood much of it.)

It is helpful to have a woman's approach to how the analytical process actually happens. She gives away the secrets as to how analysis ought to be done by a faithful but always questioning Jungian analyst.

I recommend this book for anyone who has problems, who has an interest in psychology, or wants to understand how really advanced therapies such as analytical psychology (depth analysis) actually works.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Insights Into the Application of Jungian Analysis.......2003-02-13

Very practical and useful for the reader interested in implementation of Jungian analysis. It's a bit light, however, on theory. The case examples can be a bit tedious at times and somewhat repetitive. I would have appreciated a greater context applied to the examples through explanation of original Jungian theories.
Overall, I think this book is best read in concert with Jung's original texts.

5 out of 5 stars Analysis in Action.......2002-10-11

I have to give this book 5 stars not just because I found it to be a very thorough explanation of Jung's theories but also because readers much greater than I have given this book rave reviews as noted from the back cover! Admittedly, this book is not easy to get through but worth the bit of struggle; it seems everyone should be interested in psychology since it's how we think, our attitudes and resulting behavior that rules our lives and the lives of all the human beings that we come in contact with!

Interspersed with Jung's theories are real life psychoanalytical scenarios most centered around dream analysis which I thought was way more real and interesting than reality TV! Prior to reading this book, I did not realize how much of Jung's theory has become a part of our lives, such as archetypes, although I think these were originally discussed by Plato, projection and transference, synchronicity and of course the individuation process. The latter is the acceptance of our humanness on a holistic level and the continuing discovery of our potential.

Warning, this book may raise your level of consciousness and force you to realize that the world does not revolve around you! The sooner we all face up to the truth of our existence, that all human beings are untied, regardless of their race, color or creed, the sooner we can achieve internal and therefore external peace.

            Book Description

Reveals Saturn's useful and developmental influence in our lives. Erin Sullivan gives a thorough account of the astrology, mythology, and psychology of Saturn's role as the source of divine discontent. Saturn assists the modern hero and heroine, during its transit around the zodiac, by destroying the old and outmoded within, and throwing us periodically into chaos, which invariably generates a creative transformation of purpose in our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Keeping Astrology Alive.......2006-11-27

Erin Sullivan is one of modern astrology's best. I recommend this book for readers with intermediate to advanced knowledge in astrology.

A must for the astrologer's library.

5 out of 5 stars the 7 year cycle finally explained.......2001-09-30

I usually don't write reviews, but I really likes this book. I've read it twice now and the information contained in "Saturn in Transit" explained so much of what I have experienced, mostly in 7 year cycles (when Saturn adversly affected a 4 planet stellium I have). I've studied astrology off and on for a few years and knew there had to be a reason for the drastic changes, but until I read this book, I didn't connect what or how to deal with it..So now I am prepared for 2006! LOL. The book shed light not only on my craziness, but on the actions and feelings of lots of my friends too!

5 out of 5 stars Draws upon astrology, mythology, and psychology.......2001-03-16

In Saturn In Transit: Boundaries Of Mind, Body And Soul, Erin Sullivan draws upon astrology, mythology, and psychology to reveal Saturn's useful and developmental influence in our daily lives as a source of divine discontent. During its transit around the zodiac, Saturn assists the modern hero and heroine by destroying the old and outmoded within, and throwing us periodically into chaos, thereby invariably generating creative transformations of purpose in our lives. Saturn In Transit is an impressive and highly recommended addition to personal astrological reference collections and metaphysical studies reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars Deep and profound insights into Saturn transits.......2001-03-05

Every so often one comes across a quality astrological book that really stands out from the crowd and stands the test of repeated reading over time. "Saturn in Transit" is one such book. I have continued to read and re-read this over the last few years. In the best possible sense, it is a Saturnian treatment of the transits of Saturn. There is also a great deal of other high quality non-Saturn astrology here.

In addition to her obvious extensive experience as a practising astrologer, Erin Sullivan draws extensively on depth psychology and classical mythology to portray Saturn's developmental influence on our lives. The fourth section of the book, "The Personal Heroic Journey" stands out for me. Here the journey of Saturn around the birth chart is illuminated profoundly and accessibly. Sullivan begins the cycle at the midheaven and tenth house stage, "The Call To Adventure" as she terms it, in contrast to the more conventional viewpoint that places the ascendant and first house at the beginning of the cycle. From there on she comments on Saturn's movement round the chart and the various inner and outer lessons it has to teach us.

Countless practical examples are referred to throughout, with two contrasting case histories at the end showing how different but essentially similar each individual's "heroic quest for meaning" can be. As befits a book on Saturn it does all get a bit heavy going at times but is well worth the effort!

4 out of 5 stars Saturn in Transit.......1999-11-24

This book is intruiging for its mix of mythology, astrology, and psychology. It approaches Saturn from its beginnings in Greek mythology and progresses to explain how its reputation for the nickname "the dark planet" began. Its main focus is the transit of Saturn throughout our lifetimes and how it affects us. The author, Erin Gray, is the editor for the Arkana astrology series and her depth of understanding shows in her writing.

              Product Description

How would you react if, before your twelfth birthday, two angels yanked you to a place outside the universe and asked if you would help them with a cosmic testing to determine if everyone alive (and the universe itself) was worthy to continue existing? They explain how they'll be watching your growth over the years, focusing in particular on four major life decisions—which they call "lifekeys"—to see if you can figure out the meaning and purpose of life and so to qualify as the person heroic enough to help them. Would you be willing to try—even to fail? Would you risk everything to discover the deepest essences of life? A pretty tall order for a kid? Follow the boy, then the man, David Metternich, as he struggles from his roots on a thoroughbred race horse ranch in California to the mysterious, glittering eastern Boundary of the universe where all meaning seems to begin and to end. What is the Boundary—something physical? spiritual? universal? personal? good? evil? knowable at all? The supernatural beings imply that the lifekeys are somehow buried there, but David has no idea how to look for them or even what they are.

With his non-stop humor along with a dazzling and larger-than-life personal style, even a certain quietly majestic humanity, David confronts his four major life's choices with intensity and sincerity of heart but with the confusion and uncertainty we all feel in the presence of life's most profound ambiguities, its complex joys, and bottomless sorrows. Always pushed by an awful awareness that the fate of the universe is somehow tangled with his choices, still he is never sure if he's decided correctly, purely. Will he discover our purpose, the reasons for our being alive? Come along on David's journey to discover the deepest meaning as well.

The seven volume epic, starting with David's life adventure, stretches across three generations in dealing with the universal challenge, presents an eye-witness account of the birth of a new universe and its own crucial trial, and ends with outright apocalypse and the end of time. Be there!

Actually, the series is adult fiction, not science fiction or fantasy, about the meaning of life in all its struggles and joys and profound crossroads—the real purpose for which we've been given life at all. The only reason it involves huge distances of universal space is that the scope is cosmic in confronting the major issues of being alive—relating human people to the whole sweep of the creation. Heaven and hell are actual places in the series, so the span needed to be large enough to hold and probe them. The epic is intended to make you think in life-changing ways—but also to laugh and cry.

I picked up this book at a hostel in Amsterdam and took it home with me on a whim. I have found it to be an excellent companion to my current studies of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra; it is its Western counterpart, you might say. It details the thought processes of the mind and outlines methods of concentration to alter consciousness, keeping it fresh and in the moment rather than dwelling on past experiences. I gave it four stars cause it is tedious reading at times, being so intellectual. However, with perseverance, and especially in conjunction with the Yoga Sutras, it definitely yields its fruits!
