Book Description
When violence broke out at the demonstrations surrounding the 2001 G8 summit in Genoa, Italy, the authors of this book were there. The protests proved to be a critical moment in the global justice movement.
Presenting the first systematic empirical research on the global justice movement, Globalization from Below analyzes a movement from the viewpoints of the activists, organizers, and demonstrators themselves. The authors traveled to Genoa with anti-G8 protesters and collected data from more than 800 participants. A year later, they surveyed 2,400 activists at the European Social Forum in Florence. To understand how this cycle of global protest emerged, they examine the interactions between challengers and elites, and discuss how these new models of activism fit into current social movement work.
Globalization from Below places the protests within larger debates, revealing and investigating the forces that led to a clash between demonstrators and the Italian government, which responded with violence.
Donatella della Porta is professor of political science; Massimiliano Andretta is a researcher in political science and sociology; Lorenzo Mosca is a researcher in information and communication technologies; Herbert Reiter is a researcher in history, all at the European University Institute.

Book Description
Written by leading scholars, these case studies represent an unprecedented attempt to analyze the role of the law in the global movement for social justice. They combine empirical research with innovative sociolegal theory to shed new light on a wide array of topics. Among the issues examined are the role of law and politics in the World Social Forum; the struggle on the anti-sweeping movement for the protection of international labor rights; and the challenge to neoliberal globalization and liberal human rights raised by grassroots movements in India and indigenous peoples around the world.

Book Description
World business leaders' greed-as-usual came to a dramatic halt last November when tens of thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Seattle and shut down the 1999 meeting of the World Trade Organization. This powerful but virtually unknown organization was spotlighted through coordinated actions by such diverse constituencies as environmental, labor, and human rights advocates, catching the attention of the world. The New York Times declared its amazement, "The surprisingly large protests point to the emergence of a new and vocal coalition." According to the Times, that movement includes "a wide swath of Main Street America."
As fewer people take greater control of the world's wealth, natural resources, and decision-making power, more and more people are feeling enraged at what amounts to the theft of democracy. Working with their neighbors to wrest power back from the multinational corporations, these citizens will find Globalization from Below an invaluable tool, a concise presentation of the reasons and the means to galvanize a winning challenge to the powers that be.
This accessible, practical guide lays out a strategy that will reverse the damaging effects of unfettered pursuit of profits: environmental degradation, a widening gap between rich and poor, and a lack of accountability in international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization. Globalization from Below will inspire ordinary citizens and challenge veteran organizers as it delineates a process of forging lasting links with activists around the world to gain economic and environmental security now and in the future.
Jeremy Brecher is the author of Strike!
Tim Costello is a union activist based in Boston and has co-authored several books with Brecher, including Global Village or Global Pillage.
Brendan Smith is a former staff assistant to Representative Bernie Sanders (Independent, Vermont) and is currently working at Stone Soup, Inc. in Connecticut.
Customer Reviews:
extremely repetitive.......2004-08-26
Though I really like the points brought out by this book, and Ithink they are very valid, they are continually repeated throughout. I think just having 10 pages or less would have given the same message. After reading the book front to back, I don't think all the pages needed to be wasted repeating and reiterating what was already very clear in the first chapter.
There are alternatives to the status quo.......2002-05-18
Although globalization is an inevitable force thoughout modernity we can have a voice in how globalization is enacted. As citizens of the global community, we do not have to sit back and be content with the pathway of globalization that is defined by such global organizations as the WTO and the IMF in addition to transnational corporations and the American government.
"Globalization from Below" investigates the emergence of the anti-globalization social movement that targets the negative actions and consequences of various institutions and corporations in their effort to increase their profits and power. Unlike other social movements the anti-globalization movement is unique because it consists of a multitude of social agendas ranging anywhere from environmental to labor rights causes. Although they have differential agendas together they strive for the same objective of returning to a democracy of business decisions made by institutions that don't favor the status of the wealthy minority. The true promises of globalization never became realized. Instead social problems are increasingly becoming more intensified. The disparity between the rich and poor grows larger and the environment is under constant attack. Due to the decline of national power many previous hard-fought laws and regulations protecting consumers and workers are being overruled by global treaties and trade agreements. The influence of global capital and unregulated markets puts both humans and the planet in danger. In the midst of the rapid acceleration of globalization within the past century basic human rights often take a back seat.
This book is a good introduction to the anti-globalization social movement that continues to gain more momentum as individuals become increasingly aware of the dire and drastic consequences of the current trajectory of globalization. It's a short read but well worth it.

Book Description
Cities play a growing role in governing. This new role fits within a context that nation-states, global market forces and cities themselves continue to define. The analysis of this book focuses on how local efforts in the distinct European systems of France and Germany as well as American counterparts have provided for environmental quality and social inclusion alongside local economic development. Only in certain European settings has policy making at multiple levels accomplished all three objectives at once. In those settings, effective governance from below has relied on adequate support from higher levels of governments and a favorable position in the global economy.

Book Description
When was the last time anyone interacted with an organization, a business, a government agency, a school, or a hospital and got a direct and accurate answer to a question or received a desired service without having to weave through a maze of frustrating and infuriating hand-offs? How often do people attempt to speak to a human in these organizations, but the system wouldn't allow it? Beating the System is for anyone who has faced the bureaucratic blank wall. The authors explain how systems are designed, how they function (and, particularly, malfunction), where their weaknesses are, and the incentives that drive them - as well as how to be creative in beating a system. Entertaining and informative stories illustrate how each creative strategy is used, and the authors offer suggestions for how organizations themselves can avoid frustrating those they serve and employ.
Customer Reviews:
FUNNY STORIES, GOOD INTRO TO SYSTEMS THINKING.......2006-07-24
Ackoff is a celebrated leader in the field of systems thinking, having other much more serious books on business and systems in general. In this funny little book, he turns his attention to consumer frustration against large corporations.
The book is divided into three sections --
1) Understanding systems - how they work, what made them their way and the kind of creativity that it takes to beat them
2) Stories - there is a large number of stories on systems available.
3) Takeaways - in the alst section, the authors focus on compiling brief lessons on systems beating and what you should do if you are designing systems to make them less unreasonable and less beatable.
This is a book to be read in one sitting -- two hours max. If you like the lessons and the type of thinking involved in the book, Ackoff has a large number of other books, of which I highly recommend "Ackoff's Best" as a compending of some of his more creative solutions to world problems.
An excellent resource for the creative mind.......2006-03-30
"Look what the educational system does to creativity. Every child learns at a very early stage that when they're asked a question in school they must first ask themselves a question: What answer does the asker expect? That's the way you get through school, by providing people with the answers they expect. Now, one thing about an answer that somebody else expects is it can't be creative because it's already known. What we ought to be trying to do with children is get them to give us answers that we don't expect-to stimulate creativity. We kill it in school."
-Ackoff, The Deming Library, Vol. 21
Russell Ackoff, an expert in the field of operations research and systems thinking whose famous quote about the educational system is shown above, and Sheldon Rovin, a leading figure in healthcare management, here share their thoughts on the importance of defeating bureaucracies in today's society. They present their case by listing off examples of common bureaucratic inefficiencies being either side-stepped or called to attention by "system beaters." These system beaters, whom Ackoff and Rovin claim are ordinary, frustrated members of society, all display fundamental creative behaviors: the ability to deny an underlying assumption, to explore that denial, to defer judgment in that exploration, etc. This book will doubtfully transform the reader into an everyday system beater; it certainly did not do so for me. It does, however, provide the reader with a deep set of examples on creative behavior and may set them on the right path when it comes to thinking outside the box and generating more meaningful solutions when dealing with their own problems.
The structure of the book (a brief introduction on the authors' system-beating theory, presentation of the cases, summary of the behaviors displayed in these cases, possible applications of these theories derived from these summaries) makes it an extremely easy read. Often, though, the cases are over-simplified by the addition of the authors' own unnecessary and ambiguous morals. The authors' conclusions are also extremely broad which detracts from the specific methods of creative behavior described earlier in the text. Despite these short-comings, however, the book provides an excellent resource for those attempting to be more creative in their everyday lives.
Of limited usefulness.......2006-01-25
I purchased this book because I was interested in how a consultant should go about reforming a bureaucratic organization (i.e., from the inside). What the book discusses, however, is dealing with bureacratic organizations from the outside (e.g., as a frustrated consumer). So if you want to know how to deal with rude airline personnel or college administrators, you'll find the book useful. On the other hand, if you're trying to reform a bureaucratic organization from the inside, it will be of little use.
As is pointed out in another review, many of the examples are either limited on their facts or sophomoric. You will save yourself some trouble by reading Chapter 10 (which summarizes the authors' findings) first and than scanning the examples.
Besting the Bureaucrats.......2006-01-23
This is an amusing, entertaining and relevant book. At some point, senseless rules, mindless bureaucracies, or poor service and communication frustrate everyone. Authors Russell L. Ackoff and Sheldon Rovin offer a series of straightforward suggestions for getting the respect you deserve and fighting back against maddening treatment. They illustrate their principles with brief, accessible stories and, in at least one instance, even recommend lying to get your way. You can read this book quickly and immediately pull out tips you can use. However, you might want to consider the ramifications before, for instance, refusing to leave an airline clerk's desk or flooding an organization's voice mail. There may be lines you don't want to cross. Everyone has frustrating moments when they might want to apply these techniques, so it would help if the authors did more to sort the moments of justifiable frustration from the unjustified, or to help readers figure out when a rule is bad or a system needs changing. They seem to assume that if you are frustrated, you should retaliate quickly. As a result, the book seems a touch adolescent at times, despite the authors' impressive credentials. Everyone could enjoy this book, but we recommend it primarily to readers with a sense of perspective who can tell when to use these tactics - and when to just move along.
Always the best in systems........2005-07-28
Russel L. Acckoff is "the brain" in systems approach.
Systems Approach is not only a discipline to be understanded, but a way of think that need to be exercised. It is a hard job to incorporate Systems Thinking as a way to see the world and guide your decisions. It is easy to understand the new but let the old behind is a quest. The authors of this book show how you can "beat systems" introducing a very simple method that can be used by any person. You will understand systems, learn how to find its weak spots and act, in spite of your size compared to the size of the big systems.David and Goliath inspired the authors. If you don't understand why some obvious things happens in certain organizational systems, like queues for all, idiot process, repetitive services, excess of papers and the bureaucracy that is in all places, this book was written for you.The authors present the subject in a very nice way and they use a lot of personal examples to show how creativity can be a powerful weapon against these strong systems and you can believe that this is true. I had many opportunities in my life to check and test heavy systems and I discover the same thing that the authors. This book puts order on the subject, explores the examples giving practical advices and life lessons. It is not an academic book in systems theory but the result of experience of lifes dedicated to disseminate, develop and use Systems Thinking as a way of changing the world. Read this book and something will change in your life and in your behavior and you will see the world with another eyes. UPGRADE YOUR MIND.

Book Description
With globalization drawing countries closer together, greater international cooperation is essential for peace and stability. The collective arrangement made by governments to manage their trade relations is one of the few successes of globalization. This book assesses the progress of multilateral trade cooperation, exploring the interests at work and the issues raised in successive postwar rounds of negotiations. It traces how the narrow perception of reciprocity has gradually yielded to a broader evaluation of the benefits to the regime as a whole as the major trading nations have mutually reduced trade barriers. Andrew G. Brown demonstrates the increasing importance of rule making and shows the diversity of issues on which negotiations have focused, such as customs procedures, technical standards, subsidies, anti-dumping duties, intellectual property rights, and the treatment of foreign direct investment. Despite the progress, however, the regime has remained vulnerable. The book also analyzes the major sources of strain that have been evident.
This is a nontechnical book for those curious about the possibilities for cooperation among states and should be of interest to both the nonspecialist and the specialist. It draws on more than one discipline to interpret the events, lying in the triangle bounded by political science, economics, and history.
Andrew G. Brown is a former Director of the General Analysis and Policies Division for the United Nations, New York.

Book Description
The United States and France have shared a long and often tempestuous relationship but have always managed to work through their differences because they have shared Western values and similar interests. However, for much of the 1990s, it was no longer apparent that they supported the same interests or even viewed the fruits of the Enlightenment in quite the same way. The war on terrorism has further polarized French and American perspectives, and policy differences over the Bush Doctrine, Iraq, Israel, Russia, and other issues could tear the fabric of this alliance apart.

Lectures on repression; its analysis and relation to erotism.......2003-04-01
In this study Freud delves into the studies of psycho-analysis and prepares a prognosis that stipulate his observations. He confesses that this series of lecture are not the entire studies of psycho-analysis but provide just a glimpse into the subject.
In the Study of Hysteria: hysterical patients have been noted to suffer from prior reminiscences. Their symptoms are residues and mnemonic symbols of particular traumatic experiences. Not only do the patient remember the painful experiences of the remote past; but they still cling to them emotionally; they cannot free themselves of the past and for its sake they neglect what is real and immediate. The fixation of this mental life to pathogenic traumas is one of the most significant and practically important characteristics of neurosis. Typically in the pathogenic situations; the patient is emotionally overwhelmed and is obliged to suppress a powerful instead of allowing its discharge in the appropriate signs of emotions, words or actions. One is driven to assume that the illness occurred; because the affects generated in the pathogenic situations had their normal outlet blocked and the essence of the illness lay in the fact that these `strangulated' affects were then put to an abnormal use. In short they remained a permanent burden upon the patient's mental life and a source of constant excitation for it.
Freud disagrees with Pierre Janet's thesis that hysterical patients; are inherently incapable of holding together the municipality of mental process into a unity; arises the tendency of mental dissociation. Janet in his experiments showed that in hypnosis the lapses of the supposed lost memories could be brought back. On the contrary Freud suggests that forgotten memories were not lost. They were in the patient's possession and were ready to emerge in association to what was still known by him; but there was some force that prevented them from becoming conscious and compelled them to remain unconscious. The force that was maintaining this the pathological condition became apparent in the form of resistance on the part of the patient.
What Freud has found out about pathogenic complexes and repressed wishful impulses of neurotic traces back the symptoms of the patients' illness with really surprising regularity to impression from their erotic life. Even before puberty extremely energetic repression's of certain instincts have been effected under the influence of education, and mental forces such as shame, disgust and morality have been setup, which like watchmen, maintain these repressions. So that when at puberty the high tide of sexual demands is reached, it is met by these mental reactive or resistant structures like dam, and make it impossible for it to reactivate the instincts that have undergone repression.
one of Freud's clearest reads.......2000-05-28
These lectures to a lay audience are a good starting point for understanding Freud's thought--very readable, informative, and at times humorous.
