    Book Description

This book provides a synthesis of concepts and materials that ordinarily appear separately in time series and econometrics literature, presenting a comprehensive review of both theoretical and applied concepts. Perhaps the most novel feature of the book is its use of Kalman filtering together with econometric and time series methodology. From a technical point of view, state space models and the Kalman filter play a key role in the statistical treatment of structural time series models. This technique was originally developed in control engineering but is becoming increasingly important in economics and operations research. The book is primarily concerned with modeling economic and social time series and with addressing the special problems that the treatment of such series pose.

        Book Description

A state-of-the-art guide to the new field of complexity-the tool leaders use to understand how people and organizations adapt in a world of rapid change.

Harnessing Complexity will be indispensable to anyone who wants to better comprehend how people and organizations can adapt effectively in the information age. This book is a step-by-step guide to understanding the processes of variation, interaction, and selection that are at work in all organizations. The authors show how to use their own paradigm of "bottom up" management, the Complex Adaptive System-whether in science, public policy, or private commerce. This simple model of how people work together will change forever how we think about getting things done in a group.

        Download Description

Robert Axelrod is one of the world's leading experts on game theory and cooperation. Together with Michael Cohen he now reveals what makes a complex group of individuals into a productive team. Harnessing Complexity will be indispensable to anyone who wants better ways of thinking about how people and organizations can adapt effectively in the information age. The authors' paradigm of "bottom up" management -- the Complex Adaptive System -- is fast becoming a tenet of twenty-first-century science and management.

Axelrod and Cohen use many fascinating real-world examples to illustrate their model of complexity, but their book is more than a manual for success in Silicon Valley. Managers in any business, not-for-profit organization, or the public sector, can go step by step through the processes of variation, interaction, and selection that are at the heart of every Complex Adaptive System -- whether it is the ecology of a rain forest, an innovative banking system in the villages of Bangladesh, or the frenetic but efficient world of Wall Street trading. Their simple, paradigm-shifting model of how people work together will change forever how we think about getting things done in a group.

2 out of 5 stars too generic and hard to put it into practical use.......2003-07-10

Overall, I think the book is too generic, only touching the surface of complexity/organizational theory. Hard for me to get any good action steps/tips for my practical job.

The author pointed out three points of "Complex Adaptive System"
        - variation
        - interaction
        - selection

It looks like something new. However, the author only talks on the very surface level of these three concepts. He explained why variation/interaction/selection is good to corporate organization, just as it is good for living beings. Yet, you can't find specific action steps to work on. In addition, if we do not go into deeper level (or new meaning), these three concepts will be just like old concepts with new names (i.e. diversity/teamwork/performance evaluation).

Net, I find this book is hard for practical use, and only recommend it to people who are extremely interested in complexity theory.

2 out of 5 stars Harnessing complexity... without the harness.......2003-01-28

In the first paragraph of the preface of this book, Axelrod and Cohen ask, "In a world where many players are all adapting to each other and where the emergring future is extremely hard to predict, what actions should we take?" As a "reader from Boston" recommended, providing recommendations for practical application (7 Habits of Complexity?) would have helped answer this question.

Unfortunately, even the authors' anectodal examples provide little insight into HOW to "harness" complexity. While this book is primarily aimed at "designers and policy makers," it may actually be most useful to consultants looking to add new buzzwords to their bs lexicon.

I would recommend Briggs and Peats's "Seven Life Lessons of Chaos" for those who are looking for a more nuts-and-bolts approach to these issues.

        3 out of 5 stars A beginner's view.......2002-12-01

As my first venture into the world of complexity and complex adaptive systems this was an interesting book. A lot of what I anecdotally thought about complexity was reinforced through the authors' own anecdotal examples. The examples were from a wide variety of situations, but were explained in a way to be understood by someone without a background in those various areas. However, I think the title was somewhat misleading. It seemed that a lot of the value of the book depended on having at least the initial, possibly intuitive, understanding of the interrelatedness of events, structure, and environment.

The diversity of the areas affected by complexity would seem to make it difficult to formulate a simple step by step approach for using complexity. However, it would have been helpful if the authors spent some time on what initial or environmental conditions might have been changed in their examples and how those changes would have affected the end system.

How anyone can rate this book at 5 stars is beyond me. This book is not only one of the weaker contributions to the literature on complexity in the past two years, it fails to live up to the title. No one who reads this book will know how to take the first step toward "harnessing complexity." At best, they will have the broadly useful idea that it's good to experiment with new ideas (exploration) every now and then, and then pick the ideas that work (exploitation). That hardly seems like a great breakthrough. Organizational Implications of a Scientific Frontier?! Get real.

"Fink's precise new translation makes this pivotal period in Lacan's thought more accessible to English speakers."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Brilliant and innovative, Jacques Lacan's work lies at the epicenter of modern thought about otherness, subjectivity, sexual difference, the drives, the law, and enjoyment. This new translation of his complete works offers welcome, readable access to Lacan's seminal thinking on diverse subjects touched upon over the course of his inimitable intellectual career.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Oh the Wonders of Lacan.......2007-09-23

While Lacan is in and of himself very difficult, this is a lovely complilation. Everything you need to atleast attempt to understand Lacan. Best of Luck, it's very much worth it!

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent translation.......2007-03-03

This is a treat - the first complete English translation of Lacan's Ecrits with a wonderful translation by Bruce Fink. After reading a couple pieces, I compared with Sheridan's previous partial translation and found a number of differences. Overall, Fink tends to be more readable and, I suspect, accurate.

Since you're probably already aware of Lacan's thought and importance, I won't go into that here and will restrict my comments to this particular edition. Fink provides endnotes on the translation of certain difficult words and explains how he dealt with them, sometimes with specific examples for particularly tricky sections. It's clear that he understands Lacan's text inside and out. Additionally, his endnotes prove very helpful in understanding some of the German and Latin in Lacan's writing. Because I'm not an expert in psychoanalysis, I found Fink's explanations of certain terms and ideas very helpful.

Lacan provides an index of major concerts, but this was a bit different than what I was expecting. Rather than explicitly stating "The Symbolic Order means . . . ", he gives a general area where the read is encouraged to discover its essence. This is, all things considered, probably a better way to handle the situation for, as we know, Lacan's concepts do not fit into neat little summaries or paraphrases.

Overall, Norton did a great job putting this together. Provided you have the time to sit down and really spend some time with these essays, I definitely recommend this. Even if you don't always agree with Lacan's thought, Ecrits provides some excellent mental stimulation

                  Book Description

To read Lacan closely is to follow him to the letter, to take him literally, making the wager that he comes right out and says what he means in many cases, though much of his argument must be reconstructed through a line-by-line examination. And this is precisely what Bruce Fink does in this ambitious book, a fine analysis of Lacan's work on language and psychoanalytic treatment conducted on the basis of a very close reading of texts in his Écrits: A Selection.

As a translator and renowned proponent of Lacan's works, Fink is an especially adept and congenial guide through the complexities of Lacanian literature and concepts. He devotes considerable space to notions that have been particularly prone to misunderstanding, notions such as "the sliding of the signified under the signifier,"or that have gone seemingly unnoticed, such as "the ego is the metonymy of desire." Fink also pays special attention to psychoanalytic concepts, like affect, that Lacan is sometimes thought to neglect, and to controversial concepts, like the phallus.

From a parsing of Lacan's claim that "commenting on a text is like doing an analysis," to sustained readings of "The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious," "The Direction of the Treatment," and "Subversion of the Subject" (with particular attention given to the Graph of Desire), Fink's book is a work of unmatched subtlety, depth, and detail, providing a valuable new perspective on one of the twentieth century's most important thinkers.

                      Book Description

A major new translation of one of the most influential psychoanalytic works of modern times. Brilliant and innovative, Jacques Lacan's work has had a tremendous influence on contemporary discourse. Lacan lies at the epicenter of contemporary discourses about otherness, subjectivity, sexual difference, the drives, the law, and enjoyment. Yet his seemingly impenetrable writing style has kept many readers from venturing beyond page one. This new translation of selected writings from his most famous work offers welcome access to nine of his most significant contributions to psychoanalytic theory and technique, spanning thirty years of his inimitable intellectual career. Beginning with the formation of the ego in the mirror stage, these texts study the varied roles of meaning, speech, writing, aggression, transference, and desire in our lives.

3 out of 5 stars save your money.......2004-07-01

I am a great fan of Bruce Fink whose own books give the non-clinician great insight into the clinical Lacan. He is one of those very rare Lacanians that can actually step outside the Lacanian vocabulary to say something. I was very optimistic about this new translation, however it doesn't seem to me to be a significantly better translation than the Sheridan one.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Translation.......2002-11-24

The experience of reading Lacan can be difficult for some, if not most of us; his work requires us to be active in our comprehension and imagination. For many years there has only been one translation of this important work, which has hampered Lacan's introduction to the Anglophone world. We now have a new translation and splendid it is! It does not give instant access to Lacan and the book still needs "active" reading, but it certainly helps. This modern translation - worked on by three people close to the work of Lacan - is fully annotated and referenced to give the reader a complete entry into the work as composed at the time (a hermeneutics of Lacan, perhaps?). We have many books about the work of this important psychoanalyst and thinker - but eventually the desire comes to read his original work and this translation certainly allows, supports and encourages this. This translation of the Ecrits will prove valuable for many years to come. Congatulations need to go to Fink, Fink and Grigg for their excellent work.

3 out of 5 stars If you want to read Lacan...Forget "Ecrits".......2002-11-09

If you want to read Lacan, forget all the confusing introductions by people like Zizek, Gallup et al. and absolutely don't bother with "Ecrits"--what you'll find there are dense rewritings of earlier speeches. Lacan was never a writer, he was a talker. And when he re-wrote his talk (ironically retitled as "Ecrits"), he packed years worth of insights into those pages. For those who already know his talk, the so-called "Seminars", "Ecrits" is a revelation. But for the neophyte, it can only bring frustration (hence an industry of "introductory" books I've told you to avoid). Instead of "Ecrits" then, begin where it all began...the Seminars, Paris, the 1950s where a who's-who of Paris intelligentia sit in to listen to the new kid on the block with his intriguing new back-to-basic reading of Freud. Actual transcriptions from his classes, they read like plays as Lacan interacts with his class. And like any teacher he begs his students to do only one thing: their homework! If he's going to talk about a particular essay by Freud, he expects you to read it. You also get group presentations by the students, question and answers and Lacan's facicious wit. Great fun. Seminars 1-3 are a breeze but beware, not all the volumes have been translated (nor transcribed--unpublished "bootlegs" can be found in Paris of seminars not yet in print and counter-volumes contesting the "standard" volumes' reliability in regards to the transcriptions). Seminar 4 will be out soon and 7 has been around for awhile. However, by Seminar 11 they become dense, dense, dense.
