Book Description
FileNet is the world's leading enterprise content management system. Established in 1982, FileNet practically invented the field of Enterprise Office Document Imaging Systems. FileNet's Image Services is the industry's leading provider of high-volume systems for storing, retrieving, and managing document images, transactional content, workflows, web contents, and other business objects. More than 3,700 organizations worldwide have implemented FileNet systems to provide content management services that are scalable, highly available, and provide strong disaster recovery capabilities. They have provided solutions for 81 of the Fortune 100 companies.
Unfortunately, despite an open and modular design that runs on the majority of enterprise computing platforms, FileNet's products suffer from a dearth of independently produced knowledge resources. This book has been written to fill that information void and provide wider understanding of this complex and powerful set of products to enterprise level decision makers, project managers, and technicians. In addition, the book provides general knowledge on how to use existing document imaging and/or document management systems to provide advanced knowledge management functions.
· The first book on FileNet--the world's leading enterprise content management solution--not written by FileNet insiders
· Provides a detailed discussion of FileNet's capabilities and challenges both for purchasing decisions and implementation
· Shows how FileNet can serve as the backbone for building a dynamic enterprise-wide knowledge management system
Download Description
According to a 2003 survey by Meta Group, Content Management was the #1 IT investment for large corporations. Established in 1982, FileNet practically invented the field of Enterprise Office Document Imaging Systems. FileNet's Image Services is the industry's leading provider of high-volume content management systems. FileNet is #1 in revenue, #1 in customers, and #1 in market share. This is the first book not written by FileNet insiders to evaluate FileNet's performance capabilities and challenges. The authors, both content management experts, discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the FileNet content, imaging and document platform and recount several industry success stories. In addition, the book illustrates how enterprise content management systems such as FileNet can be used to provide advanced knowledge management functions to provide wider understanding of this complex and powerful set of products to enterprise level decision makers.

A Project Manager's View.......2006-07-19
I've worked in the Document Management, Image Management, Knowledge Management and Content Management world as a project manager working to implement technologies for various teams. I've worked with Microsoft, FileNet, IBM, Novell, MarkView and Documentum products. I've lead the implementation of systems in Europe, North America and India. I'm a consultant that works to bring together the business and technical sides of a project through the communication of each team's needs and restraints.
I own the book and have loaned it to team members, I have found it to be packed full of information about FileNet products, concepts of system architecture, ideas for getting a project off the ground in your company, negotiation tips, and tons of descriptions of technical concepts tied to content management in general.
I found that where Groff and Jones' book lacked very specific technical detail, it made up for it with discussions of using FileNet to architect solutions. This is an area of information that is sorely lacking.
I found that the FileNet terminology was accurate and even though some of the names are dated through FileNet's constant renaming (all of the above companies do this), my technical team understood what the components were.
This is not an end all book on FileNet products, but it is an excellent tool for educating business teams as to what is possible when using workflow and a document repository. It is also the only independently published book on FileNet that I've found.
I recommend this book to anyone that is working on a DM, KM, CM or imaging project for the first time.
A Second Opinion - Non-FileNet .......2005-07-19
A Second Opinion - Non-FileNet
Todd R. Groff - Co-Author "FileNet: A Consultant's Guide to Enterprise Content Management"
Thank you for the feedback Mr. Tom Woodward and your comments about missing the mark regarding Enterprise Content Management (ECM) from FileNet. Thomas and I have not worked directly for FileNet. Our knowledge of the products has been gathered from experience, FileNet classes, FileNet engineers including Professional Services and from FileNet's Extra.
I disagree with your book review, because although the FileNet sales team has assigned new names to the products, their field engineers are telling a different story when contacted. They are saying that P8 is an upgrade, not a new product and that the majority of the comments around Enterprise Content Management (ECM) are tied to a sales drive to hit an emerging market.
FileNet's P8 suite is the upgrade and repackaging of their previous products and this book describes the application of these products in detail. If not having the latest market driven name of a product makes you an idiot, then most individuals in the IT field are idiots at some point in their career.
Those interested in a FileNet book can browse this book before they buy. This book is a 200-page look at FileNet and their products. There are over 45 figures and tables covering distributed capture, records retention, implementations and costs, some product pricing, media options, web farms and more.
The book comes from years of working with FileNet products, implementing FileNet projects, attending FileNet schools and paying $250 per hour for FileNet Professional Services. This book is not an end-all technical guide, but a consultants / project managers book to help understand the overall products and processes used within enterprise content management tools.
I believe this book to be very relevant, because it is a consolidation of the questions we have been asked by managers over the years. A member of the Department of Homeland Security in reference to FileNet products recently contacted me. He was looking for information and knowledge of how to apply FileNet products to his organization's problems. Regardless of FileNet's description of ECM, the description did not readily provide a solution. People provide solutions.
Amazon.com knows enterprise content management and they have provided an excellent technology, "Search Inside". Please use it to search on the different figures or areas of interest that you might have. The search results will be in the form of the actual book pages. If you don't like what you see, then don't buy the book.
Because Mr. Woodward spent the time to review this book, I did not want to post a rating and undermine the rating system. However Amazon requires a rating to post, so I'm rating this book as "3" stars. I believe it to be a "5" star book, however the other two postings are averaging out at "3" stars.
A lifesaver!.......2005-05-02
I found this book to be a valuable overview of one of the top products in the document imaging and content management market. Not only did it lay out the common implementation strategies and architectures, it's scope went beyond FileNet's own very pricey training programs. In addition to technical details like setting up offshore indexing centers, the book covers topics like how to ensure sustainable funding for imaging and KM related projects, knowing which FileNet product suites you may need, best practices for negotiating with Filenet corporation and how to set up and manage centralized document capture operations.
For me, the book was the only alternative to completely relying on vendor supplies training alone!
The Key Answers aren't in here.........2004-10-09
I purchased this book and yes it does have many, many truths, like there fact that there is little available information on FileNet's products.
However, while this book has some insights into FileNet the company and certain esoterics, it completly misses the mark regarding Enterprise Content Managment from FileNet.
The book seems to be a rehash/update of a white paper focussed on the FileNet Imaging Product, formerly Image Services now Image Manager.
When they discuss management tools and clients it a discussion of FileNet's legacy applicationos XAPEX and IDM Client. There is absolutely no discussion of the current FileNet P8 ECM suites other than some overview, nothing on the ECM Enterprise Manager, Virtual Content Manager, eForms for P8, etc. etc.
They complete miss so many basic details, key critical details in the FileNet ECM suite, such as the Application Engine, Routers, etc. that this isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I am so sorry I bought it!
As someone who has worked with the FileNet products for over 10 years and former FileNet "Sales Engineer" (they are actually Systems Consultants) I must warn you that if you try to apply 80% of this book to FileNet's ECM products you will appear a 100% idiot!

Customer Reviews:
Science of positive reinforcement.......2007-08-01
Aubrey Daniels offers an insightful look at the behavioral school of management, and its key tools: positive, and negative reinforcement. The book covers how to link rewards to behaviors you want to reinforce, when to deliver them, and how to design systems to support them. While not without its flaws, the book is well written and offers plenty of practical advice - if you're an aspiring manager, or a seasoned veteran, 'Bringing Out the Best in People' is a solid investment of your time.
Clarity, results, contribution.......2007-07-04
This is an essential text for anyone who manages people. Daniels is clearly 'for' creating a workplace that taps the innate desire to contribute and against one run by fear. I've seen nearly 35 years of organizational life, as employee, manager and consultant. That's a lot of fads, slogans and philosophies. This book is the real deal.
When people are managed using these clear, rigorous, objective principles, stress and interpersonal barriers decrease, work exceeds expectations. I also recommend Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's "Nonviolent Communication".
Based on a flawed worldview.......2007-04-02
I started reading the book as a part of my personal development with the company that I work for. The book is founded in behaviorism, and does not stray from the concepts associated with this worldview. My issue with it is that I believe that people are more than a reaction to the things that happen to us. We have unique personalities, and they consist of more than the conditioning that they are subjected to. This psychology takes away the idea of free-will and choice, and eliminates personal responsibility. When it comes to managing people, I believe that these are important elements to tap into. This behaviorist approach to management may look good on the surface, and make logical sense, but is flawed by its nature, and cannot have any long lasting impact.
Good book but not as good as her other book.......2006-03-02
This book is a fine book if you are looking for the typical book written for lazy minds. The material is good, the presentation is great. However, there is a lack of references and detail that someone really interested in the material will desire. If you like pop-culture books get this one. If you want a terrific book that appeals to your brain then get the authors other book, "Performance Management." It is exceptional.
Must Have Book for all Managers, Parents & Pet Owners.......2006-01-14
I have used Bringing Out the Best in People throughout Latin America and here in the States for several years. When I have control of a client project, this book is required reading. I get groans at first from supervisors and managers, but it is amazing what happens after they read it. They come back and immediately start talking about NICs, PICs, etc. It is fun but keeps me on my toes from that point forward as they watch my every move!
Although Daniels talks of motivating and brining out top performance from individuals within organizations, the concepts definitely applies and should be used in personal/family relationships as well. The concepts even hold true as I train my dog and two macaws as uncertain/certain, future consequences do not work for them! The beauty is that this book makes you stop and think.

Organizational Culture and Leadership (The Jossey-Bass Business & Management Series)
ASIN: 0750623411 |
Book Description
Mergers, acquisitions, and alliances continue to be almost an everyday feature of the contemporary business scene, yet at least half prove to be unsuccessful. The authors show the contribution that psychology can make to our understanding of the merger phenomena - how it affects organizational performance, and how it affects the managers and employees involved.
Mergers, Acquisitions and Strategic Alliances is intended as a guide to successful organizational marriage. Great emphasis is placed on the issue of cultural compatibility as it concerns partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes.
The book also focuses on cross-national mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures. With the increasing economic activity within the European Union and between the unions of other countries, there is a need to know more about the corporate and national cultures in these strategic alliances. The authors have drawn upon an extensive body of research based on recent cases in a wide cross section of industries across Europe.
The book is unique in showing the actual effect mergers and acquisitions have on people, and consequently on the performance of the 'new' organization. It will be particularly relevant for decision makers - those who are involved in planning and implementing a large organizational change, and those responsible for ensuring successful integration afterwards. It would also be extremely useful for postgraduate management students, personnel executives and management consultants.
The essential guide to successful organizational marriage
Focuses on cultural compatibility, partner selection, integration practices and venture outcomes
Covers cross-national mergers

Great Capture of Recent Merger Research in Regard to HR.......2000-12-09
I found this book to be tremendously useful due to its combination of scientific research as well as illustrative case studies. Too many books focus solely on subjective measures of the human side of mergers and acquisitions while ignoring recent studies in the field. This book is the only one that I have seen that truly is helpful for consultants or scientists who want to brush up on current trends on the subject, or develop a foundation for future research and projects. This book is highly recommended for HR personnel, I/O Psychologists, executives or anyone else involved in the merger process.
Ok Book, if you are looking for the How To?.......2000-08-04
I have the view of the investor who would like to be better able to analyze announced public acquisitions and their odds of being completed. In general this book does a good job explaning basic securities laws. I am glad of reading this book. Now if any one can suggest any other book regarding mergers in deeper and with more technical information, please email me. Thanks.

Book Description
This new second edition of 'Managing People' provides a practical approach to applying up-to-the-minute management techniques, and is a vital source of information for professionals in the hotel and catering industry responsible for personnel and training.
Riley explores how aspects such as labour cost, utilization, labour market behaviour and pay are inseparable from the skills of people management. In the new edition he extends his ideas on productivity so as to encompass its relationship with functional flexibility. In a similar manner, thinking about motivating people is extended to include modern ideas about commitment. We all loosely refer to peoples' attitude but here he shows the complexity that lies behind them. It is especially of relevance for managers with responsibility for personnel and training, and degree-level students will also find its non-prescriptive, user-friendly approach helpful.
Michael Riley has extensive experience in the hotel and tourism industry and communicates in a way that reflects that experience.
Fully updated with three brand new chapters
Practical, user-friendly approach from a key author in the field
Ideal for both managers and students
