Book Description

A lucid and up-to-date introduction to understanding electrical power utilities in an era of change

Electric utilities worldwide are undergoing profound transformations: nationally owned systems are becoming privatized, privately owned systems that were previously regulated are becoming deregulated, and national systems are becoming international.

Professionals in the power sector must now work in a new world in which an understanding of the principles of markets and how to evaluate investment projects under competition are essential.

This text was written as a manual for the Russian Federal Energy Commission to train regional electricity rate regulators in the principles of economics and finance involved in regulating electricity markets and deregulating electricity generation. Requiring no familiarity with economics and using a minimum of mathematics, this book provides professionals in the power sector with the tools to face the new realities of electric utility operation.

Designed both as a reference for practicing professionals and as a textbook for university and continuing education programs, Electricity Economics: Regulation and Deregulation discusses:

4 out of 5 stars Fast approach to worldwide electricity market understanding!.......2005-05-11

I used this book for an MBA project work about Italian electricity market. Easy to read and understand, it covers the basics of deregulation, the electricity market pool, the basic activities such as generation, trasmission, distribution and retail and proposes some real cases about market liberalization (California, Norway, Spain and Argentina) that should help to understand every kind of specific worldwide market. I found this book very useful for my educational purposes but maybe it could be too much generic for professional people.

Book Description

This book offers the most comprehensive characterization assembled to date of the historical, institutional, and economic forces affecting electricity regulation. Eminent economists organized by the University of California Energy Institute survey the US, UK, Scandinavia, Latin America, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. Recent experiments with privatization, competition, and restructuring in electricity are contrasted with instances where government ownership and traditional vertical integration still dominate. The introductory essay by Richard J. Gilbert, Edward P. Kahn, and David Newbery synthesizes individual country studies.

From the author: This paper elucidates the German electric power market, especially the electricity transmission pricing system that has been in force since January 2000. This paper points to several distorting pricing features, as well as to grid access problems, and suggests that a regulation office should be established. Moreover, it is argued that an independent grid operator for the entire German grid would enhance its efficient operation, and thereby increase the overall efficiency of the German electric power market. In addition, the actual cost structure and calculation procedure of a German grid operator is described in some detail. (JEL L94, Q4, D4)

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The human side of workplace violence.......2000-06-05

Baron's book gives the reader a comprehensive review of the human side of workplace violence in an easy-reading format. The first few chapters review a variety of national incidents and how the events affected victims, friends, relatives, co-workers, and the organizations where the violent incidents took place. Perhaps the most helpful part of Baron's book is his inclusion of Maslow's hierarchy which helps the reader to understand why some people behave in threatening or violent ways. The second half of the book covers prevention, hiring practices, training, and how to change employee behaviors to prevent violence. This is a great book to keep in your reference library or for use as a refresher when faced with an employee who shows signs of potential violence or uncivil behavior.

                Book Description

20 murders every week. 18,000 assaults in the same time. All on the job. Sharp increases in workplace violence continue to take an unfortunate toll on American business-and its employees, families and communities. Preventative measures may be well-intentioned, but pose troubling conflicts in themselves, pitting each employee's privacy vs. overall worker protection. A full-self evaluation of your business and its personnel may be the key to safeguard against workplace violence. Thomas D. Schneid's Occupational Health Guide to Violence in the Workplace provides the important guidelines for that careful, all-encompassing examination. Most books on workplace violence focus on psychological profiles. In a change of pace, Schneid examines the issue from a safety/health professional's viewpoint, taking all angles, legal issues, and potential ramifications into account. Chapters focus on not only in-house efforts to prevent violent incidents, but also government and legal standards directly or indirectly related to worker's rights and corporate liability. Make every effort to prevent workplace violence from hitting home: start with advice from the Occupational Health Guide to Violence in the Workplace

The funniest book I've ever read! From quirky quarks to the belly-laugh of the 'Big Bang', Konrad Krauskopf had me rolling on the floor! I only wish I hadn't been driving my car at the time!

4 out of 5 stars Creationism vs. evolution.......2007-06-05

If you believe in creationism then read this book with caution. This book tries to brainwash you into thinking that evolution is based on solid foundation and creationism is quack. Buyer beware. I would not buy this book for someone under 18 years of age.

4 out of 5 stars Very Easy Book To Read.......2006-02-25

This book is self explanatory and easy to read. I use this book for my SC 102 class. I'm a senior non-science major and it is really a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book and CD.......2005-09-24

The book is very good and the merchant was excellent in service and delivery.

3 out of 5 stars Nice edition, but it is really necessary?.......2004-04-16

For over thirty years, McGraw has been putting out various editions of this highly successful textbook. Now in its tenth iteration, McGraw has made an important extension. It added a CD (which was long overdue). Plus, the book gives access to an online resource called PowerWeb. Pretty snazzy! You can access whole bunches of material there which is simply not in the book.

Hopefully, this may help motivate some students to learn more effectively. But a disquieting counterargument has arisen in some quarters. Is a new edition really needed? Perhaps an earlier edition would suffice for most students. If so, this would let several buy second hand versions far more cheaply. But if the publisher goes to this edition, and it is made mandatory by a school, then it is far harder for students to find used versions. At least for a few years. And later? When those used editions start circulating, what if the publisher and school then go to a newer edition?

This title is a comprehensive look at many aspects of science. Its Study guide is very helpful in preparing for examinations. The book, however, has a complicated way of explaining material. This slight defect may be reduced with the help of the useful appendixes, and study guides.
