    Book Description

    Between 1965 and 1985, the Western world and the United States in particular experienced a staggering amount of social and economic change. In Birth Quake, Diane J. Macunovich argues that the common thread underlying all these changes was the post-World War II baby boom—in particular, the passage of the baby boomers into young adulthood.

    Macunovich focuses on the pervasive effects of changes in "relative cohort size," the ratio of young to middle-aged adults, as masses of young people tried to achieve the standard of living to which they had become accustomed in their parents' homes despite dramatic reductions in their earning potential relative to that of their parents. Macunovich presents the results of detailed empirical analyses that illustrate how varied and important cohort effects can be on a wide range of economic indicators, social factors, and even on more tumultuous events including the stock market crash of 1929, the "oil shock" of 1973, and the "Asian flu" of the 1990s. Birth Quake demonstrates that no discussion of business or economic trends can afford to ignore the effects of population.

        5 out of 5 stars Covers fast moving change management from a new standpoint.......2007-06-28

        A focussed and innovative approach to change management.The model of change management based around ten winning conditions is applied in a number of situations:
        * Acquisitions.
        * New venture creation.
        * Introduction of information systems.
        * Turnarounds.
        * Culture change.
        The guidance is very useful in the field I work in as an Interim Manager/Consultant.

        5 out of 5 stars STERN'S MANAGEMENT REVIEW: MEATY, TO-THE-POINT, ABSORBING!.......2003-07-20

        Drawing on their MBA executive teaching, research and consulting, the authors present a framework for rapid implementation of organizational change. They assert that the first 200 days of a major change initiative determines its outcome. Successful change calls for Winning Conditions: correct diagnosis of the change challenge; early development of shared understanding; enrichment of shared understanding; establishing a sense of urgency; creating a limited, focused, strategic agenda; rapid, strategic decision making and deployment; a human flywheel of commitment; identifying and managing sources of resistance; follow-through on changing organizational enablers; and demonstrated leadership commitment. Discussion and examples make this approach clear and applied. The book is very impressive in its scope and depth. It is meaty, absorbing and to-the-point.

          5 out of 5 stars Good introductory biology text.......2007-08-24

          This is a great text for anyone taking an introductory college-level biology course. The writing style is simple and easy to understand, unlike many other science textbooks. Despite being very easy to read, it contains a good amount of information.

          5 out of 5 stars Above and Beyond Other Textbooks.......2007-01-17

          This is a fabulous textbook. The descriptions are clear and there is always a picture following in case you are a visual learner. The greatest thing about this book is that it provides so many ways to study. The book has a website and a CD rom, where you can read the book, do very helpful activities, hear MP3 tutor sessions with the author and more. If you don't understand something, there are so many ways to study it, that it won't take long before you will.

          4 out of 5 stars What a Savings!!!.......2006-11-23

          When I first purchased this book from my school bookstore, I gulped after looking at their price tag over $130. After returning it and purchansing a used copy from Amazon, I couldn't believe the condition that it was in. It was "like new" just the way my seller claimed it to be.

          5 out of 5 stars I feel educated every time I use this book..........2006-03-11

          This is a great book!! I'm an English Lit. major and wanted to focus a bit on science and got myself this book. It's so wonderfully written! It explains very clearly and it has a CD-rom with excercises. Even if you're not taking an intro-biology course this book is useful and easy to use for self study. The book is devided into theme chapters and covers about everything you can think of in the natural world. It's no doubt a very good introduction to further study in biology. I feel educated every time I use this book!
          I'd give more than 5 stars if that was possible.

                5 out of 5 stars Very good study guide, helped me to learn college biology.......2005-01-09

                This is a good biology study guide for college bio. I studied this book along with my biology textbook, which was a little harder to understand--especially subjects on heredity. Liebaert's Student Study Guide for Biology helped me to comprehend subjects in biology at a fast pace--very good for time management since I have like 5 other classes. For really good test questions, I highly recommend "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanation" vol 1, vol 2, & Vol 3 by Patrick Leonardi. Another additional reference that I also found helpful was Biology: The Easy Way by Gabrielle Edward.
