    Book Description

Arts Under Pressure analyzes the relevant forces behind decision-making in cultural matters worldwide, specifically in the field of the arts, under the influence of economic globalization. The book deals with all the arts, in all parts of the world, focusing on the cycle of creation, production, distribution, promotion, reception, and influence. It asks the key questions: who has the power to decide what reaches audiences in what quantities, with what contents, and surrounded by what kinds of ambiences? The author claims that mass culture does not exist; what exists are artistic creations that are produced, distributed and promoted on a mass scale.

      Book Description

In the Handbook of Workplace Violence, editors E. Kevin Kelloway, Julian Barling, and Joseph J. Hurrell Jr. bring together the contributions of leading researchers to provide summaries and unique perspectives on current theory, research, and practice relating to workplace violence. This is the most up-to-date resource available providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding all aspects of workplace violence and aggression.
Part I summarizes the leading theoretical perspectives on violence and aggression and provides prevalence estimates for aggression and violence in North American workplaces.
Part II focuses on leading experts in the field summarizing what is known about the sources of workplace violence (e.g., partner violence, communal violence, industrial relations violence, public-initiated violence) forms of aggression in the workplace (e.g., emotional abuse, workplace bullying, cyber-aggression) and populations (e.g., occupations, youth) at special risk for workplace violence and aggression.
Part III considers the experience of victims as well as individual (e.g., critical incident stress debriefing) and organizational (e.g., selection, training) interventions designed to prevent, or ameliorate the consequences of workplace violence.

This is a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the fields of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, Health Psychology, Public Health, and Employee Assistance Programs. Book Description

Humans face the challenge of producing enough food to meet the demands imposed by economic, biological and agricultural factors: rising population; rising income; and an expectation of higher quality food and a more diverse diet; decreasing amount of land available for food production; lowering environmental impact of agricultural practices and preserving biodiversity.

Biotechnology is one of the most exciting and dynamic industries of our day. It offers us the possibility of reducing our dependence on intensive farming. Plant biotechnology is central to the search for effective, environmentally safe and economically sound alternatives to the use of chemical pesticides and the exhaustion of natural resources. Today, applied plant science has four overall goals: increased crop yield, improved crop quality, reducing production costs and reducing negative environmental impact. Biotechnology is proving its value in meeting these goals. It offers farmers higher yielding crops with lower costs of production and new outlets such as nutraceuticals and crop-based bio-factories. It offers the European economy the potential of high quality, knowledge based job creation and the European consumer better quality, tastier and more nutritious food.
Though there is public concern of genetic engineering, those who are close to the science understand that this is the next big frontier to be crossed. The potential and opportunities offered by plant biotechnology must not be missed. We must go forward on that basis rather than turning our backs on the science.
Phytosfere'99 provides a comprehensive overview for plant biotechnology. It combines specific scientific articles, review articles and comments from outside people on it, which is unique in European Literature.

                          Book Description

Plant biotechnology has become a priority area for technology transfer in developing countries where production of food, feed, and fiber is of vital concern. Many programs now have sufficient experience to permit anin-depth examination of approaches, achievements, controversies, and anticipated benefits. Developing countries are showcased for leading-edge advances, as represented by contributions from South Africa, Kenya, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru with a foreword form World Food Prize Laureate, M.S. Swaminathan. These presentations are augmented by reviews from organizations facilitating plant biotechnology transfer, including philanthropic foundations, bilateral and multilateralorganizations, and other new initiatives. Introductory chapters address the subjects of sustainable development, regulatory concerns, accessibility of resources, environmental issues, and socio-economic research.

Plant biotechnology has come of age. Products obtained by genetically engineered methods, once limited to science fiction, have become a reality. This book is an outstanding synthesis of the current status of technology transfer from the laboratory to the marketplace. It discusses the use of genetically engineered crops, with the focus on biotechnology becoming commercially marketable. Technology Transfer of Plant Biotechnology addresses these important new products:

5 out of 5 stars Ring of Power.......2007-07-30

In this brilliant and provacativew analysis of the dysfunctional family and patriarchal society, popular author and Jungian analyst Jean Shinoda Bolen explores the process of enlightenment, empowerment and healing that can be sparked by myth, drama, and metaphor.

Drawing on Richard Wagner's enduring, multigenerational Ring Cycle operas, Bolen ezamines our roles in a patriarchal, dysfunctional society. She demonstrates how recognizing ourselves in the stern fathers, disempowered mothers, abandonned children, and brave truth-tellers of powerful cultural myths can uncovered our buried desires, liberate our untapped strengths, and free ourselves from personal and global cycles of destruction and dysfunction.

3 out of 5 stars Not QUITE what I was expecting...........2005-06-04

Bolen's "Ring of Power" is exactly what it claims to be, a Jungian (psychological) understanding of the Ring cycle. She systematically moves through each of Wagner's 4 operas, first outlining, very briefly, her goals, the opera's respective plot, and finally a character analysis.

This is NOT an in-depth study. Bolen spends very little time on each section, and while her systematic approach allows for relationship comparison and analysis, there is little mention of the context in which these works were written. Her sole concern is with Wagner's treatment of these relationships, though it is curious that she essentially ignores his own philosophical viewpoint which led to his interpretation of these myths.

All that aside, this book is a very simplified read. I literally felt that Bolen was writing down to the audience. This is fine for a brief introduction to this subject matter, but the literary "hand-holding" became very annoying almost immediately.

I'd have to recommend Bryan Magee's "Tristan Chord" over "Ring of Power" in terms of more accurate treatment of the works as well as their informative and contextual analysis. Magee places the massive Ring cycle in context of Wagner's other works (musical and literary), in addition to historical and philosophical trends.
