                        Book Description

As we enter the twenty-first century, America's workforce looks markedly different than it ever has before. Compared with even twenty years ago, more white women, people of color, disabled persons, new and recent immigrants, gays and lesbians, and intergenerational mixes now work in America. The way in which government employers embrace this opportunity of diversity will clearly distinguish effective and efficient organizations from those which are unproductive and unable to meet the demands and necessities of the American people in the new century. This book addresses the demographic changes to the labor force and workplace and the ways in which government employers are managing the imminently diverse populations that now fill public sector jobs. It addresses the specific management strategies and initiatives relied upon by public sector employers as well as the implications of effectively managing variegated workforces for the overall governance of American society.

                          Book Description

The purpose of this publication is fourfold. It aims to:
                          1. Respond to the pressures for improvement in the delivery of public services
                          2. Design a performance management appraisal system suitable for particular countries, states, organizations, employers and employees
                          3. Demonstrate how to measure performance, using case studies from Barbados, Samoa and Tonga
                          4. Determine how the performance appraisal system can be institutionalized in the entire administrative system.

The overall approach is to conduct a needs assessment in the ministries, then to design an appropriate appraisal instrument, train its users and, finally, install the system so that it becomes part and parcel of the public service machinery. The emphasis on developing techniques of designing the performance appraisal instrument itself.

                            Book Description

This major text for students of public sector management combines well-developed management theory with research from a range of countries including Germany, Holland, Ireland, New Zealand, Sweden and the UK. The comparative focus highlights common problems and common factors in successful management across these countries. The author integrates three traditionally separate concepts in public sector management, arguing for the development of a different kind of management than that appropriate for private enterprise:- The notion of differential information between providers and clients in service delivery- The notion of a core public service- The notion of professionalism in service deliveryThroughout, the text focuses on how theory can be applied to management issues and practice, drawing on the direct reports and experiences of managers wherever possible and employing case studies with self-assessment questions to further understanding.Public services managers who are concerned to improve their management practice or students who are seeking to understand how the particular characteristics of core public services management shape management practice, will particularly welcome this text.

This book is written for the large number of public administration students and practitioners who are interested in becoming department managers and supervisors in various areas of government service. It emphasizes the interdependence between the human resource department and line managers in implementing personnel functions. It also provides enough background and history about human resource management in the public sector for line managers to appreciate why the field functions as it does.

It looks at the effects of performance measurement on organizations, its risks and limitations and proposes new and positive ways in which measuring performance can be used. Little Sheep's friends like her much better when she smiles instead of whining. Sturdy On the Farm board books have large, friendly color illustrations on every page. The leading character in each book is a different farm animal—a sheep, a cow, a horse, and a pig. Toddlers will love having Mom or Dad read each animal's little story to them at play time or bedtime. Each book's heavy board pages will withstand rough treatment from tiny hands.

My son loves the On The Farm books. We originally purchased Oink and Neigh and after he had us read them over and over again, we decided to get the rest. They are very colorful and the stories are short and sweet. A great read.

Benny and Sally don't mind doing their farm chores and caring for their mules, but they absolutely refuse to share. Their mules, Bossy and Stiffy, imitate their owners' selfish ways by stubbornly refusing to let anyone else ride them, and fussing whenever they work together doing farm work. Dad needs to teach the mules a lesson. He ties them together which forces them to learn to cooperate in order to eat. After much struggling, the mules learn to work together, and teach their owners Benny and Sally that sharing brings happiness. This delightful story by Carl Sommer shows the importance of cooperation, tolerance and respect. Grades K-3. I have read other Sommer time stories with my 5 year old who loves them. But I think this is not so good compared to the others because of the pictures. The story is nice, about two mules who learn to share their food because they are tied up and it is the only way to eat because their food is meters apart and the rope is not too long for them to eat without sharing. When they learn to share, their owners (a little boy and a little girl) do too.

4 out of 5 stars Tied Up In Knots.......2000-10-10

Tied Up In Knots is a story about two stubborn mules who have trouble finding a solution to their problem. As their two young owners, Benny and Sally observe, the stubborn mules become more and more tied up as their problem continues. Sometimes it's difficult to see our way through a problem, especially for children, and it may take a little outside help to intervene. The stubborn mules come to a compromise and Benny and Sally learn a lesson in sharing and also come to resolve some of their own differences.

It's easy for kids to learn lessons they need to learn when they see the story told about animals dealing with the issues they deal with. This is a super story that teaches that sharing is good and brings good results and being selfish hurts you most of all.

Tied Up In Knots, was an adorable book, with very cute illustrations. I really liked this story. The two mules were just like their owners. Until they finally figured out how to share. I loved the colors used in the pictures and the expressions of the characters. This story should be purchased by all parents. Good job Sommer-time books.

The two young chickens burp loudly whenever they can, play dress-up in Elinor's sisters' best clothes, and eat all the cookies that Elinor's mother set aside for her book group. This bright and lively adventure will have readers laughing out loud as they identify with the secret thrill of being just a little bit naughty. Patti Beling Murphy used the most colorful fowl she could find as models-Rhode Island Red, Black Speckled, and Common White chickens among others.

                                            Book Description

One good turn deserves another - and another - in this universal tale about the contagiousness of being kind.

Hen gives Pig an unexpected present. "How kind!" says Pig. Pig is so touched, in fact, that he decides to do something kind too. So Pig gives Rabbit a gift. "How kind!" says Rabbit, who does something kind for Cow, who is kind to Cat, who wants to be kind in turn. Where will all of this kindness lead?

With electric-bright colors enhancing the simplest of words and pictures, Mary Murphy shows the youngest of children that what goes around comes around - especially when it starts with a generous heart.

HOW KIND has a wonderful message of doing nice things for others. It's never too early to start teaching a child about kindness. Children pick up selfish habits from so many negative factors in our world, that it's nice to have another book that encourages kindness. This is a very cute book. My son loves it! I often give this book as a gift.

We just love Mary Murphy in this household! One of my daughter's first favorite books was "I Kissed the Baby" by Mary Murphy, and this was right on its heels. The simple pictures were very appealing to her, even as a very young infant. At as young as 6 months, she showed interest in this book, and by 12 months, we'd read it over and over and over again. A simple lesson in kindness for the tiniest kids with enough repetition that they know what to expect next.

I am always shy to write a negative review, but it was a little odd that a chicken gave away one of her "soon to be baby" eggs to the pig. Though it started a chain reaction with the pig feeling good and doing something nice for others...etc, etc...it ended with the pig returning the baby chick (that hatched from the egg) back to the chicken. The ending is a little strange. What is learned by a mom giving away one of her babies, only to have it returned to her?

This is a great book for children of all ages. The message is simple and straight forward - doing something nice for someone may lead to someone doing something nice for you. My 1 1/2 year old loves the bright and simple artwork that features every 1 1/2 year old's favorite barnyard animals: cow, hen, puppy, cat, pig, etc. It's a short book, fantastic for bed-time, and is sturdily constructed.

Elinor was just a little bit naughty. She wrote on the walls - but in tiny, tiny letters where no one could see it. She took her sisters' things and hid them in her room - but only their not-so-special things. She talked back to her mother - but not out loud. Sometimes Elinor sang bad words softly under her breath in the bathroom. Although she tried to be good some of the time, she kind of liked being naughty.

When Elinor's new friend Violet turns out to be even naughtier than Elinor, the entire family has to watch out. And when Elinor and Violet team up, they nearly ruin a long-anticipated visit from Aunt Lucy. What to do? This hilarious story will have readers laughing out loud as they identify with the secret thrill of being just a little bit naughty.

In life there are consequences to behaviors and actions. But not in this book. This book makes light of unacceptable behavior. There is no resolution, no correction, no explination that positive expierences can not come from these bad choices. What a waste of time and money!

I was very disappointed with this book. While the author could have used the story line to demonstrate that naughty behavior doesn't pay, she instead trivializes the seriousness of misbehaving and makes it all seem like good clean fun. The story implies that being a little naughty is okay and fails to show any real consequences for naughty behavior. Young Elinor's aunt even gives her ideas for future naughty behavior. The two naughty chickens never show any true remorse for their behavior and appear to look forward to misbehaving together in the future.

My twin daughters (fraternal, age 3.5) don't like all books, and often they disagree, one liking something that the other dislikes. They agree on this one: it is a winner. One daughter enjoys the chickens being naughty. The other likes the small morality tale. And they both like explaining all the antics the chickens do, including running the water in the bathtub until it flows down the stairs.

                                              Book Description

Welcome to the world of Mr. Rude, Mr. Crude, and Mr. Ugly!

Eleven-year-old Simon has been taught always to be polite, but in Aunt Mattie and Uncle Philbert's house, the rules are different. Even the animals including-a loudmouthed parrot and llmas named Mr. Rude, Mr. Crude, and Mr. Ugly say and do as they please. Aunt Mattie and Uncle Philbert tell Simon that good manners in their house mean thinking for yourself, saying what you think, interrupting-and burping when you feel like it.

Simon is having a wonderful visit with his aunt and uncle, but what's going to happen when he tries out his new good manners at home?

This book was very facinating to me. I liked how the lamas were named Mr. Crude, Mr. Rude and Mr. Ugly. I think everybody should have a chance to read books by Amy MacDonald, especially No More Nice. Maybe some of us should have unlessons it may help! Ms. MacDonald has my vote for the 2001 Nutmeg Award.

3 out of 5 stars Good idea, but..........2000-06-18

I thought this would be a lot more fun to read. Certainly the great-aunt and great-uncle are fun characters, and the idea is good. But the ending is contrived and can be seen coming from the very first few pages. I found much of the humor forced. But then, I'm not ten years old, and perhaps I'm thinking from too adult a point of view. However, I've certainly enjoyed and laughed at many other children's books, so I think that can't be the only reason I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to.

                                              Book Description

Can a little boy with impeccable etiquette and a very rude mule enjoy an afternoon together?

What would you do if a mule knocked on your door one day and said, "I've come for lunch"? You'd say, "Hello! Come in, Mule."

But what if the mule was very badly behaved?

This extremely funny story shows young readers exactly how to handle such a situation. Wonderfully bold and bright illustrations and a child-in-charge perspective make this a tale of manners that even the rudest will enjoy.

My 2 year old girls love this book, and I love that it shows the natural consequences for the bad behavior that this Rude Mule displays. At their age level they are able to go through and point to the ducks, spaghetti, train, etc. with several "he-haws" thrown in for good measure. I can see them being able to understand and relate to what the donkey does and does not get to do because of his behavior as they get older. We really enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Good Manners Made Fun............2002-10-16

"What would you do if a mule knocked on your door one day and said "I've come for lunch"? So begins Pamela Duncan Edwards' charming picture book about manners. Mule isn't always the most considerate or polite guest. He's demanding and never says please or thank you. He brays and stamps his hooves when he doesn't get his way, makes rude noises through his nose, and sticks out his big red mule tongue. But our young narrator is very calm, patient, and always firm. Without good manners there will be no fun, and soon he wins over his belligerent guest..... Ms Edwards' gentle and engaging text is complemented by Barbara Nascimbeni's bold, bright, and expressive illustrations, filled with lots of humorous detail. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, Rude Mule is a fun-filled, interactive story that is sure to teach little ones the value of good manners in a clever and captivating way.

                                                Book Description

An understanding of social behavior is increasingly necessary in farm animal husbandry as more animals are housed in groups rather than in individual stalls or pens. There may be economic or welfare reasons for such housing. This book is the first to specifically address this important subject. The chapters fall into three broad subject areas: concepts in social behavior; species specific chapters; current issues. Authors include leading experts from Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand.
