A truly comprehensive and practical book........2004-12-21
I am so impressed with this book! The author covers, in a logical and integrated way, eighteen practical and immediately deployable tips and tools for the cost reduction and value enhancement of any product. I particularly love the "Twenty-Cost-Lever" tradeoff tool; we are already using this to great advantage in my division. I was also impressed with the level of detail and the very readable, step by step directions for implementing the tools. The author clearly is an experienced practitioner and understands just what the reader needs to know to achieve success. I highly recommend this book!
Waste of My Time.......2004-12-14
I find the material to be a minimalized version of the true tools based in quality lean material. As a practicing continuous improvment specialist i expected more than I got in this trivial account of what should be considered a very important event in a corporate life cycle.
Designing products requires exceptional detail. Likewise I expect someone writing a book on the topic to provide exceptional tools and details. This book is superficial at best and points you in a direction, unfortunately it is the wrong direction.
An Extremely Valuable Book!.......2004-09-19
This was one of the most practical and useful books I've come across for product designers and team leaders. I've already implemented several of the "lean design tools" and believe that they will make a real difference in our firm's profits. The book is comprehensive, the writing style is clear and entertaining, and the numerous graphics are interesting and helpful. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some new ways to squeeze cost out of their products.
An expert compendium of solid advice.......2004-08-10

Book Description
Establishing Scientific Classroom Discourse Communities: Multiple Voices of Teaching and Learning Research is designed to encourage discussion of issues surrounding the reform of classroom science discourse among teachers, teacher educators, and researchers. The contributors--some of the top educational researchers, linguists, and science educators in the world--represent a variety of perspectives pertaining to teaching, assessment, research, learning, and reform. As a whole the book explores the variety, complexity, and interconnectivity of issues associated with changing classroom learning communities and transforming science classroom discourse to be more representative of the discourse of scientific communities. The intent is to expand debate among educators regarding what constitutes exemplary scientific speaking, thinking, and acting.
This book is unparalleled in discussing current reform issues from sociolinguistic and sociocultural perspectives. The need for a revised perspective on enduring science teaching and learning issues is established and a theoretical framework and methodology for interpreting the critique of classroom and science discourses is presented. To model and scaffold this ongoing debate, each chapter is followed by a "metalogue" in which the chapter authors and volume editors critique the issues traversed in the chapter by opening up the neatly argued issues. These "metalogues" challenge, extend, and deepen the arguments made.
Central questions addressed include:
*Why is a sociolinguistic interpretation essential in examining science education reform?
*What are key similarities and differences between classroom and scientific communities?
*How can the utility of common knowledge and existing classroom discourse be balanced toward alternative outcomes?
*What curricular issues are associated with transforming classroom talk?
*What other perspectives can assist in creating multiple access to science through redefining classroom discourse?
Whether this volume improves readers' science teaching, assists their research, or helps them to better prepare tomorrow's science teachers, the goal is to engage them in considering the challenges faced by educators as they navigate the seas of reform and strive to improve science education for all.

Customer Reviews:
Very useful book, packed with information and great graphics.......2003-12-27
Dave Cooper has produced a valuable reference work about the portable spring-motored HMV gramophone (phonograph), and a quite beautiful one at that. This is not a subject that has been treated before with such lustrous detail. The story begins in the mid-1920s and finishes as late as 1960 or so (perhaps later if one considers models manufactured in India). All of the models have been illustrated or photographed with their respective color and other model variations (my favorite is the De Luxe Model 101 with crocodile leatherette exterior). Very useful information is detailed for each model, such as mechanical or stylistic variations through the production histories, which make it easy to date your own machine (my red 102 is from about 1950, it turns out). And some very unusual machines are illustrated as well, made for Asian markets or special orders.
The only flaw I can find is the included CD, somewhat of a gimmick, but one which had potential, including British and American pop music from the 20s-30s. The transfers, unfortunately, are not good, a combination of being over-filtered and having unfortunate distortion (perhaps worn records were being overcompensated-for?).
Anyway, buy it for the book. And you can't beat Amazon's price.

a thought about Mario Marafioti.......2004-01-07
Hello there!!!!
I just want to share my thoughts about Mario Marafioti and let me star telling you something about me: I had experience what it's called classical training: thought about breathing, diaphragm, support the tone, breath low, voice placement, keep larynx low and so on. None of them really works for me, it was painful and besides that expensive, because each teacher charge at least $60/hr, so listen to my lessons tape, I rely on what's going on, my sound was not me, too much hard work, too much support, too dark "covering" and so on...., so what I did. First at all, pay attention to my normal speaking voice and carefully understand that I could speak really hight as well as low even so my voice at those was very weak, but the notes were there, so what I need to do!!! (see seventh principle/Mario Marafioti).
If you are open to new ideas, I sincerely recomend this book, you should study it very carefully and probably you will get the idea " Singing should be......"
because the bottom line is: We are not musical instruments, we are singers, who convey feelings and emotions trought the correct use of the speaking voice and the clearly/easy it's production the better it will.
feel free to contact me at ahtenor@hotmail.com
Superb.......2003-02-08
This is indeed the most superb book on correct singing technique. I, myself, studied for many years under teachers who taught me vowel modification and other such nonsense. I was told by many teachers that, although beautiful, my voice was too small to fill an opera house. They suggested I find other venues for singing. Then, I began studying with a teacher who was a master at the technique outlined in this book. I have never, in my life, heard anyone whose voice came close to the clarity, resonance, and overall production of this man. In time, with the careful study of Marafioti's book and excellent instruction of my teacher, my voice too gained a resonance that fills a very large house (without a microphone). Any serious vocal student should view this book as the bible of proper vocal technique. There are many teachers out there, each with their own technique. Let me assure you, if it does follow what is outlined in this book...Run!
Greatest Book on Singing EVER.......2002-12-31
What Marafioti discusses, with complete support and input from Caruso himself as citations from his many letters proves, is the simplest, easiest and most sensible vocal method out there. Moreover, it makes perfect sense to even a non-singer. Don't force. Measure the breath with the diaphragm, this being the support that so many singers today couldn't even begin to define. OPEN YOUR MOUTH. WHY is that not taught across the board?? I would challenge any reviewer who wants to attack this superb and hugely important work to actually say what they find wrong with the technique set forth by the author, rather than just some ad hominem nonsense that doesn't help anyone. Also, they should be a classical singer, which the one negative reviewer is not. There is no reason why there can't be some fundamental rules for teaching voice, despite the ridiculous claims that no one technique is better than the other. PLEASE read this book if you are interesting in the study of voice, as it may well be the only work on subject you'll ever need. Read it BEFORE finding a voice teacher, so you can better know what to look for in a teacher and how to select one. As Marafioti points out, there are many, many charlatans out there, ruining classical singing. With the knowledge gained from this book, you should be able to avoid them and find one who truly can help you develop your voice to its fullest potential.
really bad.......2001-01-21
The book is really bad and has nothing to do with what Caruso did. Marafioti just knew him and abused his name. If you want to learn how Caruso sang, get yourself his recordings (best one is Complete recordings by RCA, the new Naxos series are said to be good or also Pearl). Than just sit back, relax and - hear!
Very sound vocal philosophy.......2001-01-18
This is the first book on voice that I ever read. That was several years ago and I still love it. It's more philosophical than it is technical but Marafioti's principles of voice are sound, and both educational and inspirational. It's a good book for the serious student of voice to read.

comments about the book..........2007-01-10
the laboratory exercises did help me understand the material i was studying in Speech Science: Instrumentation. What would have improved this manual would be explanations and answers to guide the student along if there is something he/she doesnt understand. Overall, a good review book though.

Book Description
Scientific thought is inherently shaped by language, and language is shaped by the culture that has produced it. It can be said that the history of science is as much a history of writers as it is of texts. This book traces scientific discourse through time and across cultures\m-\examining its character, evolution, and cultural origins\m-\to demonstrate the profound influence of language on scientific thought, discovery, and progress throughout history.
Drawing on examples from such disciplines as biology, psychology, astronomy, and sociology, Montgomery shows how the choice of language and the metaphors used can lead to different scientific insights. For example, the use of military metaphors in biomedicine\m-\diseases "strike" and "attack," illnesses "invade" and "spread," our bodies' "defenses" "battle" to "defeat" infections\m-\provides a war-like atmosphere that has profound implications on the way disease is understood and on the institutions that are created to deal with them.
Examining the effects of translation on science and the influences of culture, Montgomery demonstrates the alteration of ideas across languages by comparing the English translation of Freud to the original German edition. He also provides a compelling look at the development of scientific language in Japan, where modern scientific discourse was born relatively late, and examines the different western influences that are evident in the terminology.
