4 out of 5 stars Making it painless to train people on the easy stuff.......2007-04-12

This book is a very clear, easy-to-read book about how to duplicate abilities to carry out repeatable tasks. And lest you think, "my task is special or too complex," think again. For better or worse, a lot of what we do every day is repeatable and not particularly creative. It makes sense to be able to train more people to share those burdens, anything from computer system configuration to project logistics, at the lowest cost to the current experts in our organization. It's all about getting more people up to speed, so we can all concentrate on the interesting part of the work: the creative and problem-solving parts.

For mentoring that part, try searching "lucid quality" on the web.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome. Great stuff........2007-01-12

I highly recommend this book to people that value quality in the workplace. I'm amazed how relevant the information is to different companies and possibly even personal/family life. I work in the high tech industry, customer support. Everything I've read so far (I'm only half way through) has been totally worthwhile and applicable to me and the team I work with. I believe the ideas presented would also be much needed at the coffee shop where my wife works. Pretty basic sensible stuff once you get down to it, but isn't it the basics where we often come up short?

I like the clear writing style. It's refreshing to read something where the intent is obviously to educate the reader, as opposed to some authors that appear to be trying to convince the reader how intelligent the author is. It's one thing to show how much a writer knows, it's an entirely different thing to help a reader learn valuable information efficiently. I think Steve is clearly and thankfully in the second group.

I think this is one of the most valuable books in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Mentoring for all levels of employees.......2006-11-15

Don't be put off by the length of "Teach What You Know: A Practical Leader's Guide to Knowledge Transfer Using Peer Mentoring"'s title! This book is a must read for any one at the apprentice level, right up to CEO.

There's no earth-shattering advice here, as Trautman states himself in Chapter 10 of the book: "Every idea in this book is common sense..." and it is! Even so, reading the book will give you that "Ah Ha!" moment and lead you into the wonderful world of Peer Mentoring.

Trautman has extensive mentoring experience at companies such as Microsoft and Electronic Arts and he uses that knowledge to give "Teach what you know" all the necessary steps you require in the mentoring process - along with some very good examples of why we should mentor people.

Each chapter is well written in a friendly, conversational tone and includes various real-world examples of the points Trautman's putting across - many of which will have you thinking "I've been in that situation, if only I'd had this book back then!" I personally found the examples very useful when relating the mentoring process to my current job as they enabled my to think, "Ah, that'd be useful to do with So-and-so." Within a couple of days I was asking people exactly what they wanted to know (rather than assuming what it was they wanted), how they wanted that information delivered (email, quick chat, full meeting etc.) and how I'd know they'd got "it" once I'd delivered.

The interesting slant with the book however, is not how you will benefit others (whether that be co-workers or the company in general) by using the mentoring process but how you will benefit from the process, how it will save your time, your role, your sanity etc.

Another good point of the book is that at the end of each chapter is an "Apprentice", "Mentor" and "Manager" summary, which gives an overview of what relevance the chapter is to each group. The "Manager" sidebars are particularly useful if you, either as an apprentice or prospective mentor, are looking to set up a mentoring programme in your workplace and need to convice your manager of the benefits it will have.

It's not often I'd recommend a book to all levels of management/staff in a workplace but this is one that's relevant no matter what level of the organisation you sit at. All-in-All, this book is a must have for anyone working in a company that has an existing (or is thinking of implementing) an internal training structure, and a definite "Leave on the breakroom table so I can share it with my colleagues" read.

5 out of 5 stars Finally... effective mentoring..........2006-09-07

I came across a book that deals with an issue that is often discussed but rarely executed well... knowledge transfer. The book is Teach What You Know: A Practical Leader's Guide to Knowledge Transfer Using Peer Mentoring by Steve Trautman .

    Table of Contents:
    Roles In Peer Mentoring
    Managing Time and Communication
Focusing On The Most Important Information
    Developing A Training Plan
    Teaching What You Know
    Leveraging Learning Styles

Appendix B - Sample Training Plans
    Index

In every IT job I've ever had, there was an expectation that "knowledge transfer" would occur between you and someone else. It could be during your training period when you're trying to learn the ropes. Perhaps you've been "designated" as the person to train the new hire. Or as is often the case these days, you're supposed to learn from the consulting expert (or transfer your knowledge as the consultant to the staff). All this is easy enough to say, but the majority of the time it's approached in a very haphazard manner. Successful learning is more by accident than by design. Teach What You Know attempts to change this all-too-common situation.

Trautman lays out an 11 step approach to successful mentoring. This starts with accepting an assignment as a silo or primary mentor and proceeds through to assessing the learning and providing feedback. There's an acknowledgment than mentoring could be active (planned time and instruction) or passive (availability for questions), and both types can be appropriate given a particular situation. He also defines the roles that are present in the mentoring situation. There's the primary peer mentor (overall knowledge), the silo peer mentor (specific knowledge in a given area), the manager (the overall director of the mentoring arrangement), and the actual apprentice (the person needing the knowledge). In addition to plenty of assistance to the person doing the mentoring, the author also covers how the material should be viewed from the manager's and the apprentice's angle. That final perspective is very important, in my opinion. If you are "the new guy", you can use this information to take a level of control over your training plan. It may feel odd to tell the gurus what you want in terms of training, but that's far more effective than simply hoping for the best.

I'll admit to feeling certain levels of "uncomfortableness" when I was reading some of the chapters. It's not often that you'll hear someone giving you permission as the mentor to tell your trainee "don't interrupt me between times x and y, as I'll be busy and I won't appreciate the intrusion". Nor do you normally see someone spell out exactly what style of communication they prefer, and how adherence to that style will make the mentor much more pleasant to deal with. But if you think about it, those are the exact things that normally go unspoken, leading to a buildup of friction and resentment during the training process. Training isn't easy, and only adds to an already overloaded schedule. A different approach such as the one advocated by Trautman may be just the remedy for the general failure of knowledge transfer in most organizations.

So... You can continue to be put into these training and mentoring situations, and you can continue to muddle through them, hoping for the best. Or, you can take a step back, learn a few new skills yourself, and make the inevitable training sessions become more effective and less of a drain on everyone's resources and nerves.

I know I'll be approaching mentoring situations in a different light now...

    Product Description

Often, literacy coaches are former classroom teachers who have little or no coaching training. Although confident in their knowledge of reading, literacy coaches may feel daunted when faced with the practical aspects of coaching. This book provides tools and tips to guide literacy coaches as they work in schools to promote more effective literacy instruction. Author Cathy A. Toll has organized the book around three sections—How Do I Promote Change? What Does a Successful Literacy Coach Do? and How Do I Coach in Difficult Situations?—to answer the main questions you may have about coaching. The first section will help you better understand various issues of educational change, and view change as beneficial. The second section will assist you with the practical matters of coaching, such as starting out, working with individuals and groups, and approaching problems in a helpful manner. The third section shows you how to overcome challenges, with information on dealing with resistant teachers and responding to pressures from administrators. The questions addressed in the book are listed by topic in an appendix for easy reference. Plus, a narrative bibliography is included to provide a discussion of the professional literature and topics covered in the book. Literacy coaching is best when you approach it with the belief that coaching is at heart about relationships and growth. This book will show you how to be a literacy coach who is successful in supporting teachers and, most important, students.

3 out of 5 stars The basics of mentoring - and being mentored.......2006-08-16

Although virtually every informed observer agrees that modern organizations must evolve more rapidly in order to thrive, few companies sufficiently emphasize the importance of mentoring - face-to-face coaching that prepares workers to assume greater responsibilities. Described as "a celebration of mentoring in action," this practical handbook explains how to establish a mentoring program. It assumes that you are already familiar with mentoring terminology. Authors David Megginson, David Clutterbuck, Bob Garvey, Paul Stokes and Ruth Garrett-Harris emphasize the importance your organization's culture plays in the establishment of a mentoring program. The book is primarily a series of case studies - more than 25, involving a wide variety of corporate and academic examples - wrapped in an extended introduction and a conclusion. We recommend this book as a manual for academic, management and human resource professionals who are interested in mentoring. Those who are not yet convinced that their organizations need mentoring programs may see the light after they read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A great guide for identifying and developing individuals.......1999-02-06

This is a great little guide for identifying and developing strengths and weaknesses of individuals in organizations. The tone of the book is very 'real world' and managers at all levels can take something away from the knowledge and witty display of graph techniques quickly.

Best of all, "Coaching for Peak Employee Performance" is realistic. While introducing mentorship /coaching, you set up the parameters and expectations as well as developing the assessment device.Focussed on the professional level, this guide can help maintain and develop any organizational relationship and adopting just a couple of the techniques can make you more effective.

Although basic and broad, "Coaching for Peak Employee Performance" is entertaining and really helps you wrap your arms around these concepts. It is such a good introduction that I gotta give it two thumbs up. DA>

                Book Description

Historians have long asserted that during and after the Hannibalic War, the Roman Republic's need to conscript men for long-term military service helped bring about the demise of Italy's small farms and that the misery of impoverished citizens then became fuel for the social and political conflagrations of the late republic. Nathan Rosenstein challenges this claim, showing how Rome reconciled the needs of war and agriculture throughout the middle republic.

The key, Rosenstein argues, lies in recognizing the critical role of family formation. By analyzing models of families' needs for agricultural labor over their life cycles, he shows that families often had a surplus of manpower to meet the demands of military conscription. Did, then, Roman imperialism play any role in the social crisis of the later second century B.C.? Rosenstein argues that Roman warfare had critical demographic consequences that have gone unrecognized by previous historians: heavy military mortality paradoxically helped sustain a dramatic increase in the birthrate, ultimately leading to overpopulation and landlessness.

4 out of 5 stars No concessions to the readers.......2007-03-18

If you're an expert on the Roman empire you will probably appreciate the fact that Rosenstein gets right to the heart of his subject with no unnecessary explanations. If you're not an expert, he doesn't make it easy to read this book. For example, he doesn't give us many dates, assuming we know when the Punic Wars ended and Sulla and Tiberius ruled Rome. (My level of expertise is that I can guess within about 20 years when these events occured.) Background and context in this book are minimized.

The subject is interesting. What impact did the frequent Roman wars between about 200 and 50 BC have on Roman agriculture? Was there an increase in the number of slaves and large landowners? Were small farms impoverished during this period as a result of Roman wars. How many Roman soldiers died in war? In 190 pages of related essays and 150 pages of appendices, notes, and a vast bibliography the author takes on these subjects. Whew! It was all a bit much. I need a little more background, more of a concession to my ignorance. Suffice it to say that this is not a book for the casual reader.

If you are an expert, however, you will probably find Rosenstein's exhaustive arguments and questioning of the conventional wisdom to be stimulating. Essentially, the author finds that the growth of slavery and the the destruction of the small landowners of Rome was less important during this period than believed by previous scholars. Along the way are some interesting facts such as (Table 2) a list of Roman battles and battle deaths between 200 and 168 BC. If that sounds like your cup of tea read this book.

3 out of 5 stars The internal dynamics of an empire.......2006-11-12

The home front is always one of the less popular subjects of war histories. Not as heroic, bloody or grand, but just as important, the way families handle the pressures of war economically, politically and socially is often as important in determining the outcome of a war as does battlefield bravery and brinksmanship. This book goes one step deeper and examines how birth rates and death rates in the Italian countryside affected the ability of the nation to war with its neighbors.

Previous accounts of the Roman Empire have viewed Rome's territorial growth in the following lens. Roman armies took men of their farms for service in foreign quarters. This led to untended farms that needed labor. Subsequently, Rome was more willing than many of its neighbors to take men of their farms for military service. This gave Rome a manpower advantage on the battlefield, and Rome's military conquests were used to supply slaves and refugee labor to work its own farms.

This book turns this argument on its head by introducing another factor; high birthrates. The conscription of some portion of Roman men into the armies was compensated by high birthrates which proved enough people on the farms to keep them fully functional. Therefore, Roman farms had enough labor to feed its armies year-round, and its armies were fully manned to fight year round. But this process survived as long as Roman soldiers were constantly marching outwards to conquer new lands, and lose some of its men in the process. Eventually, enough kingdoms bowed willingly to Roman rule without minimal bloodshed that overpopulation became the problem. Specifically, there were too many Romans without land, and these would crowd into the cities and fall prey to the wiles of rival politicians who began fielding these landless souls as their own armies to settle contests outside of the legislative arena. Hence the transformation from Republic to Empire was fueled at its base by overpopulation.

All in all a very important book in the study of a very important subject. The work is well referenced and thorough; but alas it is quite boring and academic in writing style. I do not recommend it for the armchair historian.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book. Absolutely essential to understanding the Roman Republic.......2006-11-06

This book has taken the majority of preconceived notions about the time of the Hannibalic War in Rome and it's affects on the Italian peasantry and turned them on their head. The agrarian crisis which was addressed during the Tribunate of Tiberius Gracchus was always explained as a by product of the turbulent Hannibalic War and the adverse effects the citizenry of the Italian peninsula suffered during these times. However, Nathan Rosenstein, using every single piece of evidence available to him, from the ancient sources to archaeology, genetic testing to demographic studies, shows that not only would the Italian people have been able to generally deal with their current conditions but that their population as a whole was skyrocketing. This, he argues, was the reason for the agrarian crisis, not a large rise in slave staffed estates(which he shows, by ancient evidence that the number of slaves was much lower than generally thought, and the near total lack of archaeological remains of large estates from that time period, never reached the number historians have traditionally believed.). This book has made me look at this time period in a completely different light. I hope Mr. Rosenstein continues to put out books if their quality and research is even half as high as this work.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful; more than spirit-sustaining........2001-02-12

I am careful in spiritual pursuits--notions of spirituality have to win me by changing me with their beauty and honesty. Tagore's Sadhana does this time and again.

I fell in love with physics and mathematics because of my liking for their perfectness, exactness, and trimness; perfect form. (No large claims; a physics major and math minor, no graduate work.) For the same reasons, vague or inconsistent pictures of the universe are difficult for me to take in--I often take a statement, rework it, rework myself, think carefully, stay honest, and in the end sometimes come up with an expanded understanding of things; almost always the statement and I both must be reworked; there is no problem with that, it is just the natural metabolism of thinking.

But Sadhana is so honest and well thought through that my first reading of it was smooth, beginning to end. And it was expanding. And it was perfect. And it was beautiful because it was true; it was perfectly beautiful; however you want to put it, I was taken.

The book presents a perception of things which goes to their root; fortunately and unfortunately, I find no other words for this than "spiritual;" I must be careful to point out that this spirituality is grounded in the world; it is not pained to explain ugliness; it is honest about things--this honesty does not make it less beautiful; but a rather awe-filled more. The integrity of perception of things is wonderful, and makes it a joy to read; any inch of slack can be overlooked in loo of the expansiveness, truth, and depth of insight provided.

It is the only presentation of a cosmology I have found which seems (to me!) 1. entirely consistent with a physicist's beliefs of the nature of things, and 2. which even encompasses the physicists's awarenesses, without at all attempting to (at least not by the same route). And yet with all this, it is more a work of poetry of the heart than a work of philosophy or analysis. It successfully remains part of the *lived* world.

I would like to continue about how I came to *Sadhana* in the first place, but it is best read in quiet, absent commentary by others. Get to the book. Make it "yours" first, perhaps, and then talk with others (just a thought).

Perhaps I can say this final bit (it only clues you in to the table of contents):

I came to this book a few months after finishing Plato's *Republic*, and I know that Plato's work helped me develop the ideas and questions which led me to find Sadhana.

I felt--coming from my reading and response to *The Republic*--that there was something worthy to pursue related to such notions as beauty, self, soul, and consciousness. Unfortunately, keyword searches on these called up not much helpful; mainly, they were works arrived at with too much fear and desire pushing for a crystallization of philosophy, or which lacked depth of heart.

The best writings I didn't find under these searches, but instead under searches related to poetry, music, or art--nothing directly speaking of "soul," "self," and so forth. Yet I finally queried the library computer for any books which contained all four above words (the initial four). The fact that anything came up at all, with such 'different' notions, was unusual--I approached it warily, yet with subdued and slightly hopeful stride. My wariness soon evaporated away; dissolving. I read. It was Tagore's Sadhana, you assuredly have guessed.

5 out of 5 stars In My Top Ten of World Spiritual Classics.......2000-05-24

Like the constancy of the great cellestial constellations, Tagore's Sadhana delivers the message of the human connection to universal transcendance in hauntingly beautiful English prose.

Perched as he was at the cusp of the Twentieth Century, Tagore saw with penetrating insight the fallacies of the age of science when he wrote,

" The man of science knows, in one aspect, that the world is not merely what it appears to be to our senses; he knows that earth and water are really the play of forces that manifest themselves to us as earth and water -how, we can but partially comprehend. Likewise the man who has his spiritual eyes open knows that the ultimate truth about earth and water lies in the apprehension of the eternal will which works in time and takes shape in the forces we realize under those aspects. This is not mere knowedge, as science is, but it is a perception of the the soul by the soul. This does not lead us to power, as knowledge does, but it gives us joy, which is the product of kindred things. The man whose acquaintance with the world does not lead deeper than science leads him, will never understand what it is that the man with the spiritual vision finds in these natural phenomena. The water does not merely cleanse his limbs, but it purifies his heart; for it touches his soul. The earth does not merely hold his body, but it gladdens his mind; for its contact is more than a physical contact, -it is a living prsesence."

When I first read these words over twenty years ago, they took my breath away.I have read and re-read Sadhana many time since then. Each reading or re-visting of favorite passages is as fresh as the first. He says much more that is worth reading in this 164 page gem.

Sadhana is also an excellent primer on classical Hinduism, as Tagore beautifully quotes the Vedas and Upanishads with Sanskrit transliteration to convey the lovliness of the vocal cadences of that ancient tongue.

Sadhana ranks with Psalms, the Tao De Ching, the Dhammapada, Zen Mind Begginers Mind and other enduring classics of world spiritual literature for its directness, simplicity and beauty of expression. My copy is beginning to fall apart so I am delighted to find it is again in print.

Finally, I thank Dr. Purshotam Lal of Calcutta for having introduced me to Tagore as Visiting Professor at Hofstra University in the 1960's. Lal, a Tagore Scholar, also produced a lovely translation (or as he preferred, a "transcreation") of the Dhammapada then published by Farrar Straus in New York. Thanks again, Lal.

My grandfather bought this book in the 1940's while he lived in Japan, his copy was printed in 1919. I eventually inherited it. I read it last year sometime, and I thought that it was one of the best books that I had ever read. If you are fond of Tagore, or just like philosophical/poetic works I strongly recommend that you buy it! I hope that anyone who buys this will enjoy it as much as I did! Namaskar!

                            Product Description

The hansa yaga or soaham sadhana is crowned in the Indian scriptures as the paramount spiritual endeavor that enables natural conjunction of the individual consciousness and the Brahm. Despite being superior in terms of its culminated effects, this sadhana is easiest and free from the ascetic disciplines and difficult practices of yoga that are associated with other higher level spiritual sadhanas. The treatise of shabda brahm - Nada brahm (volume 19 of Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya Vangmaya Series) devotes one full chapter to this important topic. The present book is compiled from the english translation of this invaluable text.
