Good resource book.......2002-01-18

The first thing noticable about this book is the steep price. At almost a hundred dollars, you're going to think twice before you venture into buying another book about golf. This however is not just another book about golf, if you're looking for a pictorial about nice looking golf courses this is not what you need. If you're looking for information (and pictures) on how can a designer, planner or developer go wrong while planning, building or operating a golf course then you're going to find a lot of useful information and illustrations. I think this book is more about how not to do it. This really makes it different from other books available in the market. The audience for this will be golf course designers and managers and ennvironmentalists, and the theme is managing golf course developments with minimum environmental impacts. The book is written in an easy to read language, and is not made complicated, which is good, keeping in mind that its audience will probably come from different backgrounds. If I am teaching a course on environmental issues as they relate to golf courses this would be my pick. For this price however, I would have expected the illustrations and pictures inside to be in color! This is a new book so it reads and looks fresh, I will take one star off for the 100 dollar tag and keep 4 stars for the content.

Description:
To investigate the effects of golf course construction and operation on the water chemistry of Shield streams, we compared the water chemistry in streams draining golf courses under construction (2) and in operation (5) to streams in forested reference locations and to upstream sites where available. Streams were more alkaline and higher in base cation and nitrate concentrations downstream of operational golf courses. Levels of these parameters and total phosphorus increased over time in several streams during golf course construction through to operation. There was evidence of inputs of mercury to streams on two of the operational courses. Nutrient (phosphorus and nitrogen) concentrations were significantly related to the area of unmanaged vegetation in a 30x30m area on either side of the sampling sites, and to River Bank Quality Index scores, suggesting that maintaining vegetated buffers along the stream on golf courses will reduce in-stream nutrient concentrations.

Timoshenko beam theory is presented, including a new concept of finite element modeling of the flexible structures using Timoshenko beam theory with the inclusion of the shear both in the piezo-patches as well as in the host structure. It presents the design of the periodic output feedback control system for smart structure

systems, the design of the FOS controllers for active vibration control and the design of Discrete Sliding Mode controllers using multirate output feedback technique. This monograph is based on the authors work on the multirate output sampling techniques (FOS and POF) and the multirate output feedback based discrete-time sliding mode control of flexible beams with simulations performed in Matlab. The hardware implementation of some of the developed control algorithms is depicted using DSpace and Real Time Workshop.
