Book Description

What determines the size and form of redistributive programs, the extent and type of public goods provision, the burden of taxation across alternative tax bases, the size of government deficits, and the stance of monetary policy during the course of business and electoral cycles? A large and rapidly growing literature in political economics attempts to answer these questions. But so far there is little consensus on the answers and disagreement on the appropriate mode of analysis.

Combining the best of three separate traditions--the theory of macroeconomic policy, public choice, and rational choice in political science--Torsten Persson and Guido Tabellini suggest a unified approach to the field. As in modern macroeconomics, individual citizens behave rationally, their preferences over economic outcomes inducing preferences over policy. As in public choice, the delegation of policy decisions to elected representatives may give rise to agency problems between voters and politicians. And, as in rational choice, political institutions shape the procedures for setting policy and electing politicians. The authors outline a common method of analysis, establish several new results, and identify the main outstanding problems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Political Science AND Economics book.......2003-04-08

The authors understand that the study of political institutions drives political science and apply economic principles to do this methodologically. This book evaluates various political institutions in their barest forms and derives intuitive results for their expected performance using elementary economic modelling techniques. The book logically extends its arguments and provides interesting normative evaluations as well. The authors are pioneers in what they do, but, unfortunately, are not likely to be accepted as mainstream political scientists.

    Book Description

Has globalization diluted the power of national governments to regulate their own economies? Are international governmental and nongovernmental organizations weakening the hold of nation-states on global regulatory agendas? Many observers think so. But in All Politics Is Global, Daniel Drezner argues that this view is wrong. Despite globalization, states--especially the great powers--still dominate international regulatory regimes, and the regulatory goals of states are driven by their domestic interests.

As Drezner shows, state size still matters. The great powers--the United States and the European Union--remain the key players in writing global regulations, and their power is due to the size of their internal economic markets. If they agree, there will be effective global governance. If they don't agree, governance will be fragmented or ineffective. And, paradoxically, the most powerful sources of great-power preferences are the least globalized elements of their economies.

Testing this revisionist model of global regulatory governance on an unusually wide variety of cases, including the Internet, finance, genetically modified organisms, and intellectual property rights, Drezner shows why there is such disparity in the strength of international regulations.

              Book Description

Closing a critical gap in the literature examining the strained relationship between the U.S. and Japan, this book synthesizes the economic, political, historical, and cultural factors that have led these two nations, both practitioners of capitalism, along quite different paths in search of different goals. Taking an objective, multidisciplinary approach, the author argues that there is no single explanation for Japan's domestic economic or foreign trade successes. Rather, his analysis points to a systemic mismatch that has been misdiagnosed and treated with inadequate corrective measures. This systemic mismatch in the corporate strategy, economic policies, and attitudes of the U.S. and Japan created and is perpetuating three decades of bilateral economic frictions and disequilibria. As long as both the U.S. and Japan deal more with symptoms than causes, bilateral problems will persist. This book's unique analysis will encourage a better understanding on both sides of the Pacific of what has happened, is happening, and will continue to happen if corporate executives and policymakers in the two countries do not better realize the extent of their differences and adopt better corrective measures.

                  Book Description

How do the environments in which businesses operate condition their success or failure? Such questions have long been of interest in the fields of business, economics and politics. They have gained in importance as a result of heightened competitive pressures associated with "globalization". While some see certain institutions as burdens, others see them as a blessing. This book thoroughly examines the main claims of the most important contribution--the Varieties of Capitalism paradigm--to this debate in recent years.

                    Book Description

When cold winds blow and snow piles up on the windowsills, there is nothing more comforting than a steaming mug of hot chocolate or a soothing cup of tea. And haven't we all wished that we could make a coffee drink at home that rivals the brew from that expensive coffee shop on the corner? With the more than 50 recipes in Hot Drinks for Cold Nights, the perfect cup is always at your fingertips.

From teapots and strainers to espresso makers and hand-held blenders, author Liana Krissoff offers a review of the myriad machines and accessories available and describes the best methods and ingredients for making hot drinks. In each chapter, she presents a tempting array of recipes both classic and exotic, such as Orange-Scented Hot Chocolate, Green Tea “Cappuccino,” Lychee Black Tea with Cherry Wine, and Café Brûlot with Cinnamon Cream. The last chapter offers all manner of “spirited” hot drinks, with special tips on serving them to a crowd. Along the way are recipes for flavored whipped creams, sweeteners, and butters, as well as toothsome treats to serve with hot drinks, including Peppermint-Stuffed Marshmallows, Persimmon Tea Cake, and Spiced Candied Nuts.

This warmth-filled volume will help stave off winter's chill and keep you cozy the whole season long.

Ratings have to be based on value for cost. No coffee or cocoa lover should ever pass up the opportunity to treat themselves to fine breweing when the price is right. Just don't expect a comprehensive recipe book!

I do appreciate that the author didn't merely try to fill the book up with fluff so the page count could translate into a more impressive retail price - Bill Anderson.

                            Book Description

While botanically quite different, coffee, cocoa and tea are all important plantation cash crops grown primarily in warmer, less developed regions of the world. They are typically considered together in horticulture and agriculture courses. This is the first book to provide a general introduction and overview of the scientific principles underlying their production.

                                  Book Description

The collapse in commodity prices since 1980 has been a major cause of the economic crisis in a large part of the Third World. This book demonstrates, using new econometric models, that the producing countries could have prevented this price collapse by appropriate supply management.
