Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Good Start to Looking Offshore.......2007-03-21

This book covers most of your questions and describes the basics for banking and corporations established outside the US. It tries to give you the pros and cons of each type of company and a list of places to look into. While it may not be the only book you'll ever need, it does a nice job of detailing what you'll need and how to go about the process of offshore management of finances and protecting your assets. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had been more recent. Still, its' quite worthwhile compared to what else is out there.

4 out of 5 stars An O.K. book.......2007-01-21

This book lets you understand the fundamentals of offshore investing to protect yourself from lawsuits and avoid unnecessary tax liability. It focuses on the legal way to avoid exposure. This book is worth the money, but nothing outstanding.

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous Advice that could get you in trouble..........2005-03-23

Famous authors of several other books like this one, for example Jerome Schneider, have already been * convicted * of tax fraud and have handed over their entire client lists to the US Government.

There is no legal way of avoiding US Taxes through offshore banks, offshore trusts, or numbered accounts. These things are only good for:

1.) Asset protection
2.) Diversifying investments/access to greater variety of investments

and that's it. Be wary of advice in books like this one if you are using them to avoid taxes.

If you don't like paying high taxes, give up your residency, hand in your passport and get citizenship in a country with lower taxes.

5 out of 5 stars Don't read at your peril.......2004-12-24

If you are looking for a "feel good" book that only gives you the sugar frosting about offshore without warning you about the many pitfalls, then this book isn't for you.

On the one hand, if your interest is learning about the realities of offshore banking and tax reporting for U.S. citizens, etc., the you will find this a good starter guide. It's also chock full of interesting stories based on Mr. Cornez's personal experiences in the offshore havens.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for newbies.......2004-11-25

This is a good book for teaching newbies the basics of how to go offshore, open bank accounts, and (perhaps most importantly) avoid offshore scams.

The book needs to be read in light of recent revisions to the Patriot Act and new currency transfer reporting requirements. Don't even think of going offshore if your goal is to try to hide money from Uncle Sam, since if your particular plan fails it will probably end up being felony tax evasion.

Book Description

Four Steps to a Performance Driven Benefits Plan

Do you find yourself always reacting to the latest crisis in your benefits program? The latest rate increase, discrimination test failure, new compliance requirements or disgruntled employee? In this remarkable new book, you will learn a step-by-step process that will rescue your company from The Reactionary Benefits Trap.

Author Matthew Sears makes a persuasive argument that employee benefits should be treated with the same strategic resolve and methodology that we apply to other areas of business. He is up front about the fact that genuine improvements will take time, planning and effort. The results? More control over your benefits, alignment with enterprise-wide objectives, improved relations between management and employees, and ultimately greater cost effectiveness.

Not all theory, the majority of this book is dedicated to laying out a clear step-by-step process that shows organizations how to get from ignoring the problem to deal with it in an ongoing, productive manner. Sears outlines the dedicated four step process and teaches you how your business can be transformed by leaving habits behind and moving forward strategically.

Read this book and you will learn the concepts and will know how to apply those concepts to your situation. In this easy to digest manuscript, you will find all the tools you need to lead your own self-discovery Workshop, create a Vision for your benefits program, develop concrete Objectives and a Blueprint to accomplish those objectives. The book is rounded out with helpful case studies, providing real-world examples that help to make the book's principles more concrete. Other useful features include "Teamwork Tips", "Lexicon Lessons", and "Exercise Instructions" which appear in shaded boxes scattered strategically throughout the book. All of these resources clarify the book's central concepts and enhance its practical utility.

5 out of 5 stars Making the Complicated Simple.......2004-12-24

Finally I have found a book that makes the complicated simple. Employee benefits and all of its components are both extremely important and overwhelming! Mr. Sears, who obviously is a true expert in this field, walks though a process that while in-depth is still simple to follow and understand. When looking at employee benefits I think there are three objectives most companies are looking for:
1. Provide the best package possible while at
2. The best price available and
3. Save time and internal resources
The Benefits Performance Process provides the path to those objectives through real examples and with an enjoyable style. If you are involved with your companies' employee benefit program, then this book is a must!

5 out of 5 stars You can be prepared.......2004-11-14

Every Human Resources Manager, CEO and CFO needs to read "The Benefits Performance Process" and implement the plans outlined within it. Without doing so, they are simply throwing away money and valuable employees. Every company that offers benefits to its employees will want to be sure that they are doing the best that they can when it comes to providing a competitive package while getting their money's worth. Matthew Sears offers the plan to do just that. Whether your company employs 50 or 3,550, you can benefit from this book.

By "Maximizing the Performance of Your Employee Benefit Plan" you will be learning how to assemble a benefits team, analyze current plans and problems, develop concrete objectives and plan for your company's long-term success. Through self-analysis and workshop exercises your team will develop guidelines to follow. From there you will have a plan to follow that will see you through staff changes, acquisitions, and changing regulations. "The Benefits Performance Process" is a workshop to go; it is a plan to help you develop a plan that will eventually benefit your company and your employees.

Matthew T. Sears is an Executive Vice President of Athens Benefits Insurance Services and a Fellow of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefits Specialists. You couldn't ask for a more qualified guru in the benefits performance process. Yet his book is an easy to read, understand and implement guide to improving your benefits plans. Sears is straightforward and concise, while being upbeat and friendly in his text. You likely won't find another business guide like this one and why would you want to? When it comes to improving your current plans, this is the guide to follow.

Don't put off thinking about your benefits plan until the day before your renewal is due. Don't wait until the premiums are upped once again to do something about it. Don't fear the CFO telling you to cut costs by 30%. You can be prepared. If you're not, you may lose the loyal employees you have to another company who has followed "The Benefits Performance Process."

5 out of 5 stars Practical & Thoughtful.......2004-11-06

This book gets five stars because it includes practical information I was able to implement. I hate books on theory that don't give you a sense of how to put that theory into action. We've been able to incorporate these ideas to create a process of our own.

It was well organized, easy to read!, and I loved that the author lets his personality peek through. I actually laughed out loud a couple times and you can't often say that about business books.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Approach to Employee Benefits.......2004-10-29

Heard him speak at the ISCEBS Symposium...dynamic...got the book from him there. Sears argues that we should apply strategic planning principles to our employee benefits and that failure to do so is one of the reasons they don't work right. But, more than that, he goes on to tell HOW to go about fixing it. I particularly loved the workshop method he outlines. The process outlined here actually goes beyond just employee benefits. I hope he writes a book about planning for broader business issues.

For me, it is great that this isn't a textbook..I don't have time to read those and run a business. I found this to be a lively read. He makes his point and gets on to teaching how to do it.

5 out of 5 stars A Really Enjoyable Introduction to Astronomy.......2007-09-19

It's been a long coming, but it's finally here! Astronomy instructors and authors have produced a wonderfully readable and thoroughly comprehensible introduction to the science of astronomy. Each topic in this book really is a mini-tutorial as proclaimed by the cover title. The book format is actually written in a laboratory worksheet fashion (the sheets can be detached from the book along their perforated edges) with each worksheet dedicated to a specific astronomy concept (e.g., position, motion, Keplar's Third Law, etc.). One pass through this ingeniously designed "book of tutorials" and the beginner to the wonderful world of the cosmo is truly ready to move on to more advanced astronomy books and/or astronomy courses. My congratulations (and gratitude) to the Pearson Addison-Wesley Publishing Company for making the concept of learning enjoyable once again.

If you are at all interested in astronomy, but recoiled away from the subject after opening a typical "introductory" college textbook, then you would do yourself a tremendous favor by purchasing this book. You won't be disappointed!

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-08-04

This item was in excellent condition and came in a timely manner. It helped a lot with my class.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Hands-On Suppliment.......2006-06-27

Adam's "Lecture Tutorials" collection is an excellent suppliment to any astronomy textbook. While most text books include a couple of introductory chapters on naked-eye astronomy the material included is often surface deep at best and downright confusing at worst. Much of this is because the topics covered (i.e.-the celestial sphere, daily and yearly motions of the stars, sun and moon, etc) are highly abstract and require activities that force the student to move away from memorization towards an understand of the apparent motions and what causes them.

The Lecture Tutorials are a test ed set of just such activities based on a wealth of astronomy education research. They can be used in both large scale classes and smaller groups to get students to work through the difficult misconceptions and misunderstands that oftentimes beset the subjects being studied.

The activities range throughout the standard astronomy curriculum but, in my opinion, the best activites are those that focus on the apparent motions of the Sun, Moon and stars.

I recommend this to any student trying to better understand the subject and for any educator who wants help moving their students from "fun facts" to deeper understanding.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad reference book for astrophysics students.......2007-09-14

This book is an ok reference book, if you've already seen the material in the book. The price is way too high. Whatever you do don't pay 180 bucks for this book. The preliminary section is weirdly way harder than the main text of the book. I had as my freshman astrophysics course text book and nearly dropped the course because the prelimary section was so scary. My biggest problem is the book uses MKS not CGS units. This would make the book more acessible to the reader with a physics (but no astronomy) background, but only does a disservice to the reader who wishes to use this book as a bridge to more advanced astronomical literature.

5 out of 5 stars Intro to Astronomy.......2007-01-11

Nicely written textbook for the first year student in astronomy and astrophysics. Clearly written.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE THIS.......2005-02-24

This book BLOWS. It's the WORST book I've EVER used in a physics-related course. There are several different values given for the same thing all over the place, equations frequently lack units, and the explanations just plain suck. Don't use this unless you have to.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory book in astronomy/astrophysics.......2003-12-11

I used this book in an independent study class in astronomy and astrophysics while I was an undergraduate. With the exception of the some errors in the equations in the opacity section I found this book to be clearly written and not too difficult. You will need to know your college physics and some math but that should be expected since this is not a descriptive text. If you want a descriptive astronomy text search elsewhere, if you want an introductory astrophysics text this is a good choice.

3 out of 5 stars good if you know whats up.......2003-09-04

i think this book is good if you already know a bit about astronomy and physics. it covers the topics it wants to very well, and very in depth. however, it has no logical sequencing of the chapters, and thus is a wonderful reference text, but not so great when it comes to learning in a call

              Book Description

In writing this textbook the author's objective was to provide students with a non-trivial, reasonably priced introduction to astronomy. Starting with problems astronomers face on Earth connected with observation, the book then moves on to cover the Solar System, galaxies and finally cosmology, one of the most exciting and fastest developing areas of astronomy. Up-to-date and carefully structured Introductory Astronomy has a strong narrative thread running through it; concepts are gradually introduced and subsequently built upon in later chapters. The science behind the subject is integrated and presented in a way that allows readers to gain a thorough understanding of the subject without being blinded by unnecessary mathematical detail or scientific theory. Throughout the book there are plenty of worked examples, problems, figures and photographs.

                Product Description

The space vehicle spectaculars of recent years have been revealing the full scope and beauty of our own solar system but have also shown that a growing number of other stars too have planetary bodies orbiting around them. The study of these systems is just beginning. It seems that our galaxy contains untold numbers of planets, and presumably other galaxies will be similar to our own. Our solar system contains life, on Earth: do others as well? Such questions excite modern planetary scientists and astro-biologists. This situation is a far cry from ancient times when the five planets that can be seen from Earth without a telescope were called the "wandering stars". This notebook-cum-workbook provides an introduction to those profound and still-developing modern studies. Written by an expert in the field, it is pitched at a level suitable for beginning students. It is designed particularly for self-study but can also provide background support for students attending lecture courses or teachers developing such courses. The reader is encouraged to add to the arguments of the book as the subject develops. A special feature here is a substantial glossary of terms and people which serves as a starting point for further entries. Wandering Stars is a key to unlock the door to an exciting and fascinating universe which is still the object of active discovery.

                  Book Description

Ferguson's flexible and useful INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, provides readers with laboratory exercises that are well-tested, current, and flexible to individual needs. These labs have a variety of origins and authors, and bring a broad range of activity to the introductory astronomy lab. Most require only inexpensive equipment. INTRODUCTORY ASTRONOMY EXERCISES, Second Edition, gives readers practical experience with the things they only read about in their book, such as using a telescope and CCD photography. Ferguson groups the exercises together by whether they deal with the solar system or stars and other objects beyond the solar system. Three introductory exercises on using telescopes, viewing constellations and the Celestial Sphere, and using numbers in science set the stage and help readers overcome anxiety. A combination of indoor and outdoor labs allows for adjustments due to weather conditions.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for astronomy students.......1997-11-20

Summers and Aitala have created a manual which aptly takes the student from lab to lab, in a straightforward and understandable method. The perforated pages are an excellent idea, allowing the student to turn in lab assignments once completed in the text. Excellent resource for professors who teach introductory astronomy.
