Book Description
Corporate governance has become a crucial issue for many companies and organizations. Much has been written on the formal systems, but Lynn McGregor uncovers the human element, examining personal and interpersonal governance. Using vivid cases and examples, she provides guidance and checklists for both individuals and companies and raises key questions about the governance role of companies.
Customer Reviews:
Unique Perspective.......2003-01-22
Most corporate governance books take the approach of an attorney or business professor looking a systems. Lynn McGregor comes at it from the perspective of a psychologist or trusted advisor to better enable CEOs and board members to start by first looking within the self. It is certainly a fresh approach, one I haven't encountered elsewhere.
The book moves modestly to demonstrate how personal governance and different leadership styles can influence improvements in corporate governance. McGregoor offers a model for understanding how corporate decisions are made, how group decisions can be improved and discusses the "shadow" side of corporate governance to help us guard against destruction. Clear examples, individualized exercises and a good sense of humor help the reader on the road to establishing humane, yet competitive companies. McGregor offers a unique perspective based on years as a successful board mentor and consultant - a welcome addition to any library.
Preventing the Enrons of this world.......2002-07-10
After the Enron and WorldCom disasters, I reread the "Human Face of Corporate Governance " and started to wonder why people know well in advance that things are going wrong, but don't want to take responsibility for what they know. If the principles and practices in this book were more available! (and if Lynn McGregor were applying these), I think that this would have helped to prevent this and similar disasters.
The chapter on the shadow side should be compulsory reading.
It "deals with those aspects of human nature that cause unnecessary suffering to others. It is based on the assumption that much harm is done unconsciously. It is also based on the assumption that every one has feet of clay, and has the potential for creating harm to others. However, if there were greater understanding, some people might be able to avoid certain mistakes, or at least limit any damage" - America, take note.
The book is divided into four parts, humanizing the meaning of governance, personal governance, interpersonal governance and the human face of formal roles. As the book indicates, to do this properly takes time, courage, willingness to learn and commitment. The main point about it is to show that attention paid to human aspects of corporate governance more than repays the initial energy and investment put into it.
What she does is outline the significance of individual values and style and ways in which power can be both used and misused. Her four levels of governance, starts with the personal and makes personal responsibility as important as competence. The book highlights the importance of integrity and why the quality of relationships is essential for good decision-making. Her practical examples and guidelines provide a sound basis for understanding dynamics between people and how good practice can be developed in many ways. The section on Intergroup governance points out that governance is a process involving many different groups, all of whom are interconnected and as we know from recent events, all have a part to play in creating or destroying wealth.
The chapter outlining the formal roles of Chairman, CEO, non-executive and executive directors moves away from purely structural solutions to executing responsibilities with integrity, intelligence, rigour, wisdom and creativity.
I strongly recommend this book

Welcome to the Funny Farm covers everything from baby showers to cell phones, chin hair to Hamburger Helper, defrosted turkeys to Barry Manilow, and dumb blonde jokes to well-woman exams. Linamen's collection of hilarious observations, originally posted online at www.women-of-faith.com as The Funny Farm columns, will inspire and entertain (though not necessarily in that order) and ultimately shed light on principles of spiritual wellness and Christian living that will enrich the life of every reader.
Customer Reviews:
I needed this book!.......2005-02-26
This book kept me laughing the whole time I was reading. She can take embarrassing times and make them hilarious! After reading this book, my life seems so calm and easy! You just HAVE to read this book.
Christian Propaganda.......2004-02-06
You should explicity forewarn the perspective buyer about this book. The writing of the book is fine. BUT, it is a big lecture on Christian religion and religious dogma. I would not have bought this book if I had known this. This religious thrust should appear in your book outlines.
Very Uplifting.......2002-09-28
I Really enjoyed this book, couldn't put it down. Every little chapter was full of funny and very realatable (if that is a word) items. I loved how she incorporated God in each chapter. I would recommend this book to every woman in America. I don't have my own children but to read about hers and how much she truly loves her family touched my heart. This is a must read!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Great Cards!.......2007-09-06
My 2 year old enjoys this set a lot. She loves touching the furry parts of the cards and they are super sturdy (cardboard). There are about 5 cards that are way to hard for her limited vocabulary so we make up the names, other than that they are great!
Restaurant Favorite.......2006-08-04
Whenever we go out to eat, we are sure to take this book along. It keeps my little boy (11 months) entertained while we wait for our food, and works like a charm. There is nothing better when he is screaming his head off than to pull out this book and presto, instant smile. He touches and feels and tries so hard to say baa at the sheep at bark at the dog. It is well worth the money. And so far it has held up remarkably well (even though there is rice in the dogs fur and cheese on the lambs wool).
Touch and feel book.......2005-08-18
The book is sturdy, cute and of good quality, but my toddler was not impressed. I thought she would like the book better then she did.
My favorite baby gift!.......2005-01-13
I just love ALL the books in this series. My children just loved them when they were little, and if you've ever had babies you know how valuable a good book is -- you get to sit down for a while! They were fun for me to read and really fun for them to explore. In fact, I've already packed them away in their hope chests for when they grow up and have children.
Now, whenver I know anyone who has had a baby, these books (as many as I can find) are my gift.
Julie Clark Robinson, author of Live in the Moment
Great Reading for the Car.......2004-03-13
My son loves this book so much he has a copy of it in the car which he often looks at it when we're going to day care or coming home.

Light hearted comedy.......2006-09-25
I just loved this book. It was easy to read and each day I looked forward to seeing what would happen next in this rural area. It reminded me somewhat of Green Acres, but a bit more likely to happen.
Come On: Reprint Jay Cronley's Books!.......2005-03-16
I discovered Jay Cronley's books after several of them had been turned into movies--some successfully, others not quite.
FUNNY FARM is a hilarious book, and the best parts of the Chevy Chase film come directly from the book.
Cronley also wrote QUICK CHANGE (which became the Bill Murray movie) and GOOD VIBES (which became the hilarious and underrated Richard Dreyfus movie called LET IT RIDE).
The other Cronley book worth reading is WALKING PAPERS.
They're all very funny and worth reading. The one thing that the movies could not capture was Cronley's hilarious writing style, deadpan and dead-on.
Check them out.
Funny Farm.......2002-10-17
Funny Farm By: Jay Cronley
This is a great book. At first I thought it was going to be boring. After reading the first 3 or 4 pages I found myself not being able to put it down. I have never read a book that made me laugh before. This book is really funny. I would find myself laughing at the words on the page and people would be starring at me.
This book is mainly about a couple that moves to the country. It talks about the problems they come across while trying to get settled in their new home. I would recommend this book to anyone. I think that if you like a book that has a good plot and makes you laugh that you would love this book.
The only negative thing I would say about this book would be that there is a lot of cursing. Some people don't mind cursing but if you do then this might not be the book for you. Other than that I think this is a terrific book and you should read it. At least give it a chance before you judge it! Who knows you just might like it!
Amusing.......2001-05-14
City couple move to the country. The husband intends to be a novelist. The wife reluctantly goes along with the move. Largely it's a typical comic adversity story but with some of the mishaps a little more outrageous than "The Egg and I." It doesn't really start to rise (to my warped perspective) above say "Green Acres" until the husband starts going through some changes. For example he tries to improve his mail delivery service by attempting to murder the mailman in the belief that any replacement would have to be an improvement. In summary, I didn't find it hysterical or hilarious. I found it amusing. Amusing enough that I expect to read another Jay Cronley book in the not too distant future.

Delightful poems.......2005-11-18
Beyond Old MacDonald is a wonderful, joyful collection of poetry about farm animals. Children giggle delightfully when reading them or when being read to. The wordplays make the poems very useful in the classroom. A Wordplay Guide is included.
Funny Poems for Kids of All Ages.......2005-09-27
Too often I have purchased poetry books for my kids only to have them store the book on their shelf and never read it again. Beyond Old MacDonald by Charley Hoce is a poem book of a different animal. Hoce's word play brings giggles to both children and parents. The many levels of the poems, as seen in "When My Cow Goes Dancing" - "She always wears a muumuu/Since it makes her calves look small," leave smiles on the faces of anyone reading them. With the obvious fun Hoce has with language coupled with Fernandes' perfectly delightful illustrations, Beyond Old MacDonald invites us to read his poems again and again ... and the kids really do it.
Creative Fun.......2005-08-25
I thoroughly enjoyed reading these poems. Charley Hoce is a master of word play. His poems are creative, witty and will make both children and adults laugh out loud. Each poem reveals a quirk of the English language. Children will be challenged to think about the English language in different ways in order to "get" the meaning of the poems. The wordplay guide located at the back of the book is a great resource for teaching and demonstrating different literary elements such as puns, personification, homophones, idioms etc. This guide outlines each poem found in the book and the element it utilizes. Fernandes' watercolor colorful illustrations are full of energy and brought each poem to life. Her illustrations also reflected multicultural characters that I found refreshing. Even children too young to "get" the poem would enjoy looking at the colorful and funny pictures. This book of children's poetry respectfully deserves a spot on the shelves of public and school libraries. It definitely has a spot on my son's bookcase.
Delightfully punny!.......2005-05-21
I sat down with my 7-year old as we took turns reading the clever, witty little poem puns. I found myself laughing at the end of each pun, & my daughter occasionally stopping a moment, thinking, & finally laughing herself as she "got" the punchline. But, most of the puns she got right away. And if the 30 poems aren't reason enough to purchase this book, on the last page of the book the author/teacher includes a Word Play Guide to point out the language skill each of the poems employ (pun, idiom, personification, etc.). Making it an excellent teaching tool.
OLD MacDONALD IS YOUNG AGAIN.......2005-04-19
With 22 years experience as a classroom teacher Charley Hoce well knows what appeals to youngsters. As he says, "Children love puns, homophones, idioms, and anything that turns convention upside down." He has incorporated all of these into a jolly rhyming book based on the well known ditty "Old MacDonald Had A Farm." It might be especially fun to sing the song with youngsters before reading the rhymes.
Just watch children's eye light up when they see, "My horse he cannot whinny. My horse he cannot neigh. My horse has caught a nasty cold. My horse is hoarse today."
Artist Eugenie Fernandes has crafted boldly colored whimsical illustrations that enhance each verse. Intended for young readers from 4 - 7 "Beyond Old MacDonald" is thoroughly entertaining with a little education thrown in, such as language skills that children may need to practice.

Great Animal Photos.......2000-03-27
My 8 month old daughter really loves this book. She likes the bold pictures. She really loves it when we read together and I make the animal noises. I find her quite often looking at this book by herself. My daughter absolutely loves looking at other babies. I would recommend this strongly for any young reader.
Kids love photos of kids!.......1999-11-05
This is currently one of my one year old daughter's favorite books. Every time she turns to the last page with all the animals she squeals with delight!

Book Description
Illus. in full color. "A young farmer thinks he has gotten a real deal when an old man sells him a farm for one dollar. Upon inspection, however, there are a few liabilities: a cat that thinks it's a horse, a rooster that thinks it's a dog, and other animals with identity problems. The initial joke will really tickle new readers. Long, but easy; kids will feel a sense of accomplishment when they finish this."--Booklist.
Customer Reviews:
Down on the Funny Farm.......2006-06-17
The story I finished reading is called Down on the Funny Farm. The story is kind of funny. Well the book is adout a farmer that is looking for a farm. Then he went walking looking for a farm. All of a sudden he saw an old man and the old man asked him if he wanted his farm. The farmer asked how much. The old man told him for only one dollar. The farmer said yes and got so happy.
Then when the farmer took a look at the farm. The animals were acting strange. The cat was trying to pull the wagon, hores was on the barn roof, the rooster was burrying a bone, the dog was sitting on a nest, the chiken was rolling in the mud, and the pig was chasing mice. Then the farmer told all the animals what they were supposed to do. Then they did what were born to do. The farmer then got married with a lady so he would not be alone in his farm.
My opinions and recommendations are that the book was okay, but not that okay, because it is not that funny. I recommend it to people that have strange pets and that do not like to read, because it is a small book.
Very Funny Indeed!.......2006-02-04
Reading this book is such an enjoyable endeavor to a beginning reader as the funny scenes unfold; we found this to be true with my five year old son.
The surprisingly versatile animals doing what they're not supposed to (horse on roof, cat pulling wagon, etc.) had my son laughing so hard, and the old farmer being so happy to receive such little money for his farm was also a surprise. Every page turned brought another funny surprise, filled with laughter all the way to the end. I laughed just as hard as my youngster! A must read for beginning readers (and their parents!).
The ending had a surprising twist, of course! Read the book!
Down on the Funny Farm is pretty entertaining.......2003-03-13
This is a pretty good book. I remember reading it when I was a bit younger, and thinking it was pretty funny. Generally, the book is basically funny. The animal sounds will give the young reader some extra creative fun and a pleasant reading experience. The pictures are very amusing, and add significantly to this story's humor. One can easily pick this book up again and again to enjoy the crazy happenings at the Funny Farm.
While it was necessary for the ending of the story, the ironic ending of this book annoyed me. It really isn't a great flaw, and doesn't take anything too great away from this story.
Acid Test: Kids want to hear it again and see the pictures!.......1999-07-18
What a great book for me to use in our Rotary Club sponsored reading program with Will Rogers School in Altus, Oklahoma. I enjoy reading and making the farm sounds to the 1st grade class. We, (members of the business community), read twice a week to show how important reading is to us. This book is one of my favorites because it gives them a positive experience with a book. Plus, I love to see them smile and hear them laugh!
Wow! What a book!!!.......1999-04-15
Kudos to P.E.King and Alastair Graham. This is a perfect marriage of witty words and fantastic art. Just fabulous. Has anyone seen any other books by P.E.King?
