Office face-time may always play a critical role in certain corporate settings, but technology and globalization have combined to thrust "virtual meetings" into an increasingly important place on today's overall business stage. With once-rigid boundaries of time, geography, and even organization now rapidly disappearing, members of almost any workplace team can communicate and collaborate regardless of physical location. How to do so most effectively? Deborah L. Duarte, assistant professor at George Washington University, and Nancy Tennant Snyder, chief learning officer for Whirlpool Corporation, outline suggestions applicable to large and small organizations alike in Mastering Virtual Teams. Designed for those who work in--as well as lead--such teams, it is divided into sections that focus on their unique inherent complexities, their creation, and their operation. Real-life examples and the authors' experienced observations are complemented by an abundance of helpful checklists and practical exercises. --Howard Rothman

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but do you really need to read a book to figure this out?.......2007-03-10

This is one of two textbooks assigned for me in my management of engineering teams class. Overall, I would say that this is a good book with a lot of useful information on managing virtual teams. However, I think that managing virtual teams is not too different from managing regular teams. Sure there are some technology issues you have to consider and different team norms, but the delta between managing virtual and conventional teams is really not that large. I do not think you need a book dedicated to explaining this delta. But overall this is a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Another Human Resource Book with no Business case.......2001-11-03

I was disappointed by the lack of real world examples. Most of the examples were "human resource groups". Now, to be sure, there are many really fine checklists for managers included in this book. Although they are basic, most managers find them useful and thought provoking.
Unfortunately, as with most books on virtual teams, the authors have not focused on the critical operations which use virtual teaming: marketing, sales, program/project management. This book also neglects to leave the reader with a future focus --like: what is the new work and how will the businesses have to 'virtually' restructure or lose the "command and control" model of management.

4 out of 5 stars Not great prose, but thorough coverage.......2001-03-27

Duarte and Synder provide thorough coverage of the tools and techniques required for effective use of virtual teams. The writing style is basic, here's-what-to-do stuff, offering 'x' critical success factors, abundant check lists, and tables comparing alternatives, such as video or electronic displays. From my experience, they are right on target for team leaders and team members.

Interspersed are jewels of wisdom. For example: communication and collaboration are the two most important factors in team success; sometimes it's better to wait until team members get to know one another as dependable and competent before initiating in-depth team building; trust depends on performance and competence, integrity, and concern for the well-being of others; information overload can slow down a team's decision-making process. I was pleased to find they documented that video conferencing requires a different skill set than running regular meetings.

I sometimes yearned for more real life stories and persuasive arguments, in other words, a less formulaic style. But that's my bias as a reader and not their intent.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of technology and techniques.......1999-08-03

The authors provide an excellent treatment of the problems associated with starting and maintaining virtual teams. An excellent concise presentation of working with differences in culture is presented. Many technology alternatives to facilitate group interaction and collaboration are also presented. The strengths and weaknesses of each technology are given for several different problem solving situations. I would recommend this book to anyone who must solve problems with others who are off site.

5 out of 5 stars Great balance of high level strategy detailed operations........1999-05-21

The authors do a fantastic job of giving good high level strategy while giving useful detailed operational information.I have already found the content useful in my global virtual teaming.

                    Description:
Concatenated SSU (18S) and partial LSU (28S) sequences (~2kb) from 12 ingroup taxa, comprising 2 phoronids, 2 members of each of the craniid, discinid, and lingulid inarticulate brachiopod lineages, and 4 rhynchonellate, articulate brachiopods (2 rhynchonellides, 1 terebratulide and 1 terebratellide) were aligned with homologous sequences from 6 protostome, deuterostome and sponge outgroups (3964 sites). Regions of potentially ambiguous alignment were removed, and the resulting data (3275 sites, of which 377 were parsimony-informative and 635 variable) were analysed by parsimony, and by maximum and Bayesian likelihood using objectively selected models. There was no base composition heterogeneity. Relative rate tests led to the exclusion (from most analyses) of the more distant outgroups, with retention of the closer pectinid and polyplacophoran (chiton). Parsimony and likelihood bootstrap and Bayesian clade support values were generally high, but only likelihood analyses recovered all brachiopod indicator clades designated a priori. All analyses confirmed the monophyly of (brachiopods+phoronids) and identified phoronids as the sister-group of the three inarticulate brachiopod lineages. Consequently, a revised Linnean classification is proposed in which the subphylum Linguliformea comprises three classes: Lingulata, 'Phoronata' (the phoronids), and 'Craniata' (the current subphylum Craniiformea). Divergence times of all nodes were estimated by regression from node depths in non-parametrically rate-smoothed and other chronograms, calibrated against palaeontological data, with probable errors not less than 50My. Only three predicted brachiopod divergence times disagree with palaeontological ages by more than the probable error, and a reasonable explanation exists for at least two. Pruning long-branched ingroups made scant difference to predicted divergence time estimates. The palaeontological age calibration and the existence of Lower Cambrian fossils of both main brachiopod clades together indicate that initial genetic divergence between brachiopod and molluscan (chiton) lineages occurred well before the Lower Cambrian, suggesting that much divergence between metazoan phyla took place in the Proterozoic. Description:
The trilobite biodiversity curve for Avalonia differs markedly from the global and other regional patterns in having the peak of diversity immediately prior to the Hirnantian extinction event rather than in the Caradoc or even earlier. This reflects both the very wide spectrum of biofacies represented in this part of the succession in Avalonia and the immigration of taxa resulting from the closure of the Iapetus and Tornquist oceans. Detailed analysis of the faunas demonstrates that Avalonia exemplifies the many factors involved in provincial breakdown and their influence on biodiversity. Furthermore, it emphasises the need to understand the palaeoenvironmental context within which such changes took place. Over 90 trilobite genera are known from the mid-Ashgill (Cautleyan and Rawtheyan stages) of Avalonia with half of these making their first appearance on this microcontinent in that interval. The wide environmental spectrum reflected in the rock record not only includes the return of the deepest water (cyclopygid-atheloptic) biofacies but also marks the first recorded development in Avalonia of the pure carbonate illaenid-cheirurid association which was first established in low latitude Laurentia much earlier in the Ordovician. Its appearance in Avalonia may reflect a combination of the drift of the microcontinent towards tropical latitudes and a possible warming event. Recruitment into this and other environments was overwhelmingly from low latitudes with the largest cohort having its earlier history in Laurentia. Setting aside the 'new' pure carbonate environment, the marked rise in diversity and concomitant provincial breakdown resulted from the insinuation of immigrant taxa into existing communities across the shelf and upper slope rather than from any substantial replacement of the established incumbents. The peak of diversity in the mid-Ashgill made the climatically triggered Hirnantian extinction all the more dramatic in Avalonia.

5 out of 5 stars The Ecological Cycles that composes the Enviroment.......2000-04-12

This book is the base for the practice and teaching the Enviromental Drawing. There are essays and study cases about the necessity of considering the city health and the ecological processes when planning the Landscape. Taking the man as the principal subject, he tells a little bit about the Lanscape Architecture - since Olmstead, and and earlier intentions of treating the landscape that came from the first civilizations through the time. It's also rich considering the elements of the ecological cýcles that composes the enviroment - like the microclimate, the human and the natural actions, focusing on each important agent of the landscape, and giving examples of "how to feel" each case study, as an example for other situations.

                          Book Description

This comprehensive book provides a thorough scientific foundation on the growth and care of plants common to all horticultural commodities. Continuing in the tradition of the first edition, it incorporates the principles behind the techniques described in other ''how-to'' horticulture texts. By providing readers with a thorough grounding in the science of horticulture, it successfully prepares them for more specialized studies in nursery management, floriculture, landscaping, vegetable and fruit science.

I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Preece as an instructor for the General Horticulture class when I started college. Little did I know that I would be referring to this book when I was preparing for qualification exams for PhD in Botany. This textbook is an invaluable tool for students who want to further their education

This book is by no means basic as the subtitle "an introductory textbook" states. In fact, this is one of the most detailed, and comprehensive books available on the subject. Covering everything from total plant anatomy all the way to pathology, nutrition, propagation, and beyond, it is an invaluable resource for any hort or botany student. Hobbyists will also find this book invaluably enlightening, as it can help them answer common questions such as why leaves on tomato plants are turning yellow.

5 out of 5 stars Great book invaluable to horticultural students.......2000-11-15

I have recently completed a BSc (HONS) in horticulture and found this book very useful. I used many text during my degree, however this was the one I refered to most. I think that students particularily in the initial stages of a degree or diploma course would find the book most valuable. Many areas of interest are covered e.g. biological control of plant pathogens, irrigation and many other areas that may not be apparent from the books title. There are many good pictures and diagrams and each chapter has useful references. This book will also be of interest to horticultural professionals.
