Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book, if you are prepared for it........2005-10-10

If you are serious about learning Market Microstructure this book is a great preview to reading the actual papers. It gives you enough intuition that you can approach classic papers by Stoll, Glosten and Milgrom, Easley and O'Hara, Kyle, etc.

Also, you do not need a serious knowledge of the subject matter to open this book (although it helps to have an undergraduate level investments class under your belt). However, finance prerequisites aside, you should be prepared with a fairly thorough knowledge of microeconomics and statistics. A semester or two at a good graduate economics program should do the trick. Otherwise, this can be a tough read.

4 out of 5 stars A classic in market microstructure theory.......2004-10-25

I do not imagine a faculty of management's library without this book avalailable for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students.
As opposed to another reviewer, I really liked the structure. Starting with inventory problems, then dealing with asymetric information and finally going thru agent's strategic behavior; you get the big picture regarding the main issues in market microstructure.
Maybe a bit more detail and explanations on the derivation of some basic models would have been more value added. Unfortunately, you must move on to the original published academic paper to get a fully understanding of any particular model. You cannot rely exclusively on the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of market microstructure theory.......2000-10-12

This is the quintessential book on the theory of the microstructure of financial markets. Although it is not meant for people with just a casual interest in the area, it is nevertheless an indispensable book for academics and for people serious about the topic.

It is also far more readable and understandable than Daniel Spurber's book which provides little of the working intuition of O'Hara. In fact Spurber is meant more for the theoretical economist with an interest in market microstructure, whereas O'Hara appeals to a broader audience in the field of finance.

5 out of 5 stars A Counter Point.......2000-07-01

This book does not need praise. It is widely considered the best introduction to the academic work in market microstructure. The only reason I've listed this review is to counter the unfortunate review already listed. This book is perfect for the researcher or PhD student interested in the issues addressed in market microstructure. Although the book is not written for the average mba student, a careful read would benefit anyone interested in the structure of markets.

1 out of 5 stars Lacks in both organization and clarity ........1999-01-10

The book is meant to describe market microstructure. My discovery is that one needs to know a lot about the subject matter to get anything out of it. I had the feeling of reading footnotes without seeing the text! It quotes authors and papers without the slightest indication as to what they are about. I do not recommend it. But there are other books covering the subject. Campbell, Lo and McKinlay (The Econometrics of Financial Markets) proovides in one chapter more information that this book. FInally, there is a French book on the topic that is excellent; it would call for a translation (the authors are Biais,Foucault & Hillion).

      Book Description

This book presents a theory of the firm based on its economic role as an intermediary between customers and suppliers. Professor Spulber demonstrates how the intermediation theory of the firm explains firm formation by showing how they arise in a market equilibrium. In addition, the theory helps explain how markets work by showing how firms select market-clearing prices. Models of intermediation and market microstructure from microeconomics and finance shed considerable light on the formation and market making activities of firms. The intermediation theory of the firm is compared to existing economic theories of the firm including the neoclassical, industrial organization, transaction cost, and principal-agent models.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Providing ideas of intermediary firm.......2001-05-07

This book provides concepts of intermediary firm and its functions in economy. The author starts by introducing Princing Mechanism and Adjustment (with uncertainry) in the first part. He give use a fancy applications in Economic Theory (Gen. Eqlm.) and competition among intermediaries in part II. Part III, he seperates the concepts of matching and searching. Part IV, Adverse Selection and Moral Harzard problems are also given. Part V is Transaction Cost. Part VI is Agency Theory. All are presented with intermediary concepts. The author gives ideas about intermediary in many aspects by collecting lots of papers and conceptualization of thems. The concepts can be used in financial and physical markets. It is indispensable for students who want to study Market Microstructure, Intermediary and E-commerce Concept.

      5 out of 5 stars A theory of intermiadiation.......2000-04-08

Intermediaries play a significant role in market economies. The author identifies that role and develops a conceptual framework of the major functions of intermediaries in markets. The main idea, which goes beyond the classical dichotomy of firms vs. markets, is simple but powerful: firms create and manage markets. I think it is a book that should be read by everyone interested in understanding how markets work.

Financial Mathematics is an exciting, emerging field of application. The five sets of course notes in this book provide a bird's eye view of the current "state of the art" and directions of research. For graduate students it will therefore serve as an introduction to the field while reseachers will find it a compact source of reference. The reader is expected to have a good knowledge of the basic mathematical tools corresponding to an introductory graduate level and sufficient familiarity with probabilistic methods, in particular stochastic analysis.

          Description:
This paper studies the relation between order imbalances and daily returns of individual stocks. Our tests are motivated by a model which considers how market makers dynamically accommodate autocorrelated imbalances emanating from large traders who optimally choose to split their orders. Price pressures caused by autocorrelated imbalances cause a positive relation between lagged imbalances and returns, which reverses sign after controlling for the current imbalance. We find empirical evidence consistent with these implications. We also find that imbalance-based trading strategies yield statistically significant returns. Our results shed light on the role of inventory effects in daily stock price movements.

5 out of 5 stars Unambiguous and clear statistics text.......2006-11-24

While earning my PhD years ago, I completed several statistics courses. One course stands out in my memory today. The text used in that course was Little and Hills. Not only was the professor truly extraordinary, but so was the text, for both explained experimental analysis in clear and vibrant examples that a person like me could relate. Years later, this is the first reference text I turn when reviewing and applying statistics. Little and Hills provide an approach that reduces complexity to simple-to-understand concepts and practices. The authors provide interpretations, examples, and shortcuts. Examples easily apply themselves to Excel as well as dedicated statistical programs. From its pages, this text serves a strong foundation for exploring the wonderful world of statistics well beyond its agriculture-related title. If one seeks a clear, unambiguous statistics text, this text should be considered seriously .

4 out of 5 stars Clear calculations of agricultural statistics.......1998-09-05

I have used this text to help me with analyses of variance since 1981. Though not as detailed as Steele and Torrie (1980) and others, it is much simpler to understand for non-statisticians like myself.

I have just completed the analysis of a combined Latin Square (not in this book) using the Excel spreadsheet, and referred to this book frequently.

I would highly recommend its format to anyone contemplating writing a statistics manual for practicing agronomists and other ag experimenters.
