Corporate Mobility and Paths to the Top: Studies for Human Resource and Management Development Specialists
J. Benjamin Forbes , and James E. Piercy Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0899305245 |
Book Description
This book is the first to present research-based data, rather than opinion, on the subject of executive mobility. J. Benjamin Forbes and James Piercy have brought together ten years of research on various topics, including backgrounds of chief executive officers, early intra-organizational mobility, and backgrounds and placements of female executives, then integrated the results to form an accurate picture of management mobility in today's corporate world. In gathering data on the entire careers of CEOs, Forbes and Piercy looked at a variety of industries, including manufacturing, utility, transportation, banking, insurance, and retailing, as well as the socio-economic backgrounds of these industries' executives. Throughout the work, the authors deal with specific issues, such as early promotions versus the "late bloomer," changing firms or industries to move up more quickly, and the greatest opportunities for women executives. Following an introductory chapter that provides an overview of the current environment and conventional wisdom, Forbes and Piercy offer detailed discussions of starting a career and the importance of early movement; the early competition; and mid-career issues including alternate routes to the top. Subsequent chapters deal with profiles of and projections for female executives; origins and formative years of the chief executive, including education, social status and personal characteristics; and industry differences and changes over time. The work concludes with a discussion of the careers of CEOs in different industries, and a practical look at reforming development and selection and strategically planning an individual career. This work will be a valuable tool for human resource professionals as well as for professionals and students in the management field. Public, academic, and business libraries will also find it to be an important addition to their collections.

Plant Power.......2001-05-17
Lyndel looks at the latest research about phytochemicals and explains the facts behind the claims and headlines. Phytochemicals are the bio-active compounds in plants that gives them their color and flavor. Lyndel Costain explains how these phytochemicals take on a new life when we eat the plants. They actually help to bring us lasting health benefits.
Today, we all want to look good and feel healthy. There are over 12,000 phytochemicals which have been identified. These hidden powers can help us to reduce the risk of problems such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, cataracts, immune system disorders and osteoporosis.
In the first section, Phytochemicals are introduced. In part two, there is a guide to phytochemicals. This is a photographic guide to 20 phytochemicals, highlighted by 66 different food sources. In the last section, nutritional needs are discussed in detail.
So, are you getting your daily requirements? Do you know which foods are most beneficial? What is the Mediterranean Diet? Did you know that chocolate has flavanols (catechins)? Cocoa powder extracted from cocoa beans has very strong antioxidant activity. I knew it was a good idea to eat chocolate ";>. While we have also all heard of the benefits of Green Tea, this book shows how to maximize the benefits, what the key benefits are and which diseases it is more likely to help.
This book discusses the benefits of cherries, eggplant, cocoa, green tea, black tea, apples, onions, lettuce, celery, olives, oranges, grapefruit, soy beans, lentils, bean sprouts, wholewheat, linseeds, strawberries, walnuts, pecans, blackberries, blueberries, pears, plums, potatoes, turmeric, cranberries, peanuts, peppers, parsley, butternut squash, avocados, carrots, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach, kale, mangoes, papaya, red pepper, corn, garlic, leeks, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, barley, oats, rye, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, artichoke, asparagus, seaweed, shiitake mushrooms, lemon, garbanzo beans, bananas, coffee (in moderation), kiwifruit and pineapple. They all sound good to me! So, put these items on your shopping list.
This is a guide to bio-active plant compounds and their benefits. It is essential reading for everyone who wishes to make more healthy food choices. There is also a section called "caution" because apparently too much of a good thing can also be bad. So, you will want to read about why you should not just eat raw lima beans all the time or eat raw cassava because it could be fatal. If you eat too much celery, your skin could also become more sensitive to sunlight. So, this book is quite an education and is only 128 pages.
So, if you hear about a "super food" and want to research it further, this book will explain everything and help you add the healthiest foods to your diet.

Foods That Fight Disease: A Simple Guide to Using and Understanding Phytonutrients to Protect and Enhance Your Health
Laurie Deutsch Mozian Manufacturer: Avery ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Accessories:

Foods That Fight Disease.......2001-02-05
Intended for both consumers and health experts, Mozian takes very technical research and makes it understandable. Because of the nature of the information, expect technical discussions and scientific terms. Luckily, most detailed explanations are followed by easy to understand analogies, like where free radicals are described as "...roving gangs of thug molecules, looking to start trouble in the cell...".
Making it easier to read and use, the book is divided into three parts. The sum of the parts yields an understanding of what phytochemicals are, what they do, where to find them and recipes for turning nutrient rich foods into meals.
The first section gives background on phytochemicals, which are naturally occurring food components that my have health-promoting potential.
Part two suggests how nutrient rich foods are used in treatment and hopefully, prevention of specific diseases. Included are discussions of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and menopause (not an illness, but certainly a condition in which alleviating symptoms is desirable), just to name a few.
The third part is dedicated to phytochemical-rich recipes. Each recipe has comments and nutrition information. Practical dishes like apple crisp and tamale pie incorporate one or two nutritional powerhouses, thereby making them more appealing to skeptical eaters.
Mozian's nutrition expertise (she has a Master's degree in nutrition and food science, and is a Registered Dietitian) is evident throughout. In this book you'll find what most health-conscience people want - discussions of basic foods to eat for better health, complete with menus, recipes, serving suggestions and calorie estimates.
This book falls into the small category of `excellent diet and nutrition books' available.
