This book does cover all the important topics clearly. Unfortunately, the examples used in the book are 'corny' and distract from the important concepts leading to unneeded text and dreadful thoughts of 'The clip joint' and 'the solar powered cookie oven'. The grammar used in this book is a bit strange; don't, won't, etc appear frequently. This is somewhat odd as bernake was a former Fed governor and abel is also distinguised. I think that, perhaps, the authors attempted to 'dumb down' the book and in the process managed to merely make it corny. I also am a bit appalled at the amount of space given to math - it seems the authors wanted it to be more 'accessible'.
I will agree that the 'real world' examples are both pertinent and informative. They were chosen very well. The footnotes are also welcome as the authors frequently simplify models.
This book could use some trimming and perhaps less talk about dog groomers and the like. If that were to happen this would be one of the best macro books out there.
Anyone want to bet on Dr B becoming Fed Chair? Actually he had no input due to his Fed Governor position.
Excellent textbook.......2005-09-21
This is an excellent textbook as a forerunner to more difficult books such as Branson.It deals with each of the major issues clearly and competently. The text boxes are excellent case studies.

the best economics book i've had so far. IT's easy to understand but filled with TONS of great information. IT all makes sense with the historical examples and also has insight on the future. A must read!

The best in the market... .......2006-06-27
Barro's text has been unfairly criticized as not being mathematically rigorous enough. However, it has established itself as the standard text at all of America's top colleges - Harvard, Chicago, MIT, et al. - by relying on non-proprietary, supplementary, calculus driven texts written specifically to dovetail to its lucid and primarily social scientific, algebraic presentation. An excellent complement in this vein (and free!), is `Macroecomics' by Matthias Doepke, Andreas Lehnert, and Andrew Sellgren (often abbreviated DLS), developed during Doepke's and Lehnert's doctoral studies at Chicago. A mere google search of their names will turn up copies of the text. When assigned in connection with Barro throughout, its provides a mathematically rigorous, foundationally micro driven, market clearing presentation of modern macroeconomic theory for students whose have a solid grasp of differential calculus. The text would also seem to work well for individuals who want to largely avoid calculus while gaining a deeper understanding of macro theory beyond the introductory level.

If you are an economics major and you do not know this book, buy it and read it. The market-clearing approach is the approach. Strong microfoundations, rational agents and a dynamic setting. And it is presented in an intuitive, elegant, and clear way with the aid of ingenious diagrams. It is one of those pieces that are introductory and advanced at the same time. It is rather unfortunate that most undergraduate textbooks do not follow the modern approach. Even worst, they do not teach thinks like the labor/consumption choice, savings and capital accumulation, Lucas island's model, public debt sustainability, current account as an intertemporal phenomenon, etc. Once you learn this approach well, macroeconomics will no longer be a headache for you and you will be ready to master more advanced materials. The only major shortcoming in Barro's book is that, despite it is in the 5th edition now, it has scarcely changed. Other have unsuccessfully tried to do this (Krugman, Farmer, and Sachs-Larrain). By the way, there is now in the market another book that heavily relies on the same approach and is a just a little bit more advanced and extends the approach to a few more topics(bank runs, for instance): Stephen Williamson's Macroeconomics. If you are an undergraduate, you shall have both Barro's and Williamson's books. You will not regret it if you later find yourself in graduate shcool. Finally, I agree with a former reviewer that an intermediate, more matemathically oriented, presentation of the approach is urgently needed. Fortunately, I do not really need it, but I feel confident that it will not take long for somebody to come up with a more technical presentation. However, after Barro's exposition, I wonder if one really needs the mathematical intrications. That is actually the beauty of the book.
Get Paul Krugman's book instead..........2002-05-24
If you want "zero government free-market" philosophy, read R.J. Barro's book. As a member of the conservative Hoover Institution he contaminates every single of his books (this is no exception) with his "religious beliefs".
If you want a good book on Macroeconomics, I'd suggest Krugman's instead (or perhaps in addition to this, to compare viewpoints).
Paul Krugman is much more balanced than Mr. Barro. Don't believe me? get both books and judge for yourself. Krugman's book is available at:

parkin's macro text, like his micro text, provides a rudimentary, yet comprehensive, survey of macro econ. it is good for students who have a slight grasp of economics and would like to know more about it. parkin does a good job of explaining and introducing the fundamental concepts. more advanced econ students or individuals with a base of economic knowledge, spend your time and money somewhere else

The authors don't know how to explain the theories in a easier way, on the contrary, they try to confuse you as much as they can. They also have all sorts of stupid examples which have nothing to do with reality. They are theorists, not good writers!
There are also many mistakes in the book. not too professional.
If your university requires this book, you do not have a chooose, but it is not a good one.

The authors provide an understandable presentation of the dynamics of demand/supply, the price structure, equilibrium and concepts of elasticity. The data employed is current & this version is supported by the publisher in various prior versions , as well as, this successive version. The work has considerable technological support in the form of the CD Rom and various instructional materials.The authors provide a useful "News Analysis" to integrate current events into the text. This is very useful in providing background information for students. The problem sets are topical and challenging. There is a considerable discussion of international economics and transitional economies. Overall, the text can satisfy a wide range of student interests. i.e. Those students having a quantitative orientation will appreciate the considerable graphs throughout the text. Students having a more visual learning experience will enjoy the various news items throughout the text & the extensive discussion of basic definitions. The chapter summaries and WEB exercises are helpful in integrating the material & applying the various concepts using current technologies. This text should be employed for intensive renditions of introductory economics at the collegiate level.There is an appropriate amount of microeconomic coverage in the Principles of Macroeconomics, as well as, the more comprehensive Principles of Economics work. After having read this book, students should have a firm grasp of economics and the various data employed by industry. In addition, students will become more knowledgable on current events applicable to studies in this field. This work would provide very helpful background for further studies in Price Analysis and Econometrics (Mathematical Economics).
excellent economics text for beginners.......1999-02-12
I am teaching an Economics class at the beginning college level at a private business college. This book is one of the better business textbooks I have encountered. It provides real-life and simplistic examples to help students understand complex issues. I recommend it.

Chronobiology is the study of timing mechanisms in biological systems as diverse as plants, animals and some micro-organisms. It includes rhythmic phenomena ranging from short period (ultradian) through daily (circadian) to long period (monthly, annual) cycles of behaviour, physiology and biochemistry. Insect Clocks, like its predecessors, deals with the properties and functions of clock-like processes in one of the planet's most abundant groups of organisms. The first half of the book is concerned with circadian rhythmicity, the second with annual responses such as over-wintering diapause, seasonal morphs and cold hardiness.
